<keyword id="6354756" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="BCCI">BCCI</keyword>, the Board of Control for Cricket in India, had claimed to act as an association, but the claim has been rejected by the <keyword id="75952" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Supreme-Court-of-India">Supreme Court of India</keyword>. It added that the board, which is a monopoly holding full sway over the game of cricket, can’t at the same time claim the right to be a free private association under Article 19 (1) of the Constitution with no concomitant obligations. 
 
A special bench comprising Chief Justice of India TS Thakur and Justice FMI Kalifullah said that the BCCI and its member associations should fall in line with the recommendations made by Justice Lodha committee. 
 
However, on behalf of member associations of the BCCI, advocates Kapil Sibal and Arvind P Datar have opposed the idea of one association, one vote, as was proposed by the Lodha panel. 
 
"You are discharging a public duty. In doing so, can you discriminate? You have full sway over cricket in the country. You also seem to have some kind of state patronage, otherwise the state would have regulated you," Justice Thakur said. 
 
The CJI had said this after Datar had argued for the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association's right to conduct its own affairs, acting as a free association. 
 
"No one can play cricket without being on the BCCI's right hand side. You have a monopoly. You also have a full sway over membership," Justice Thakur said. 
 
He said, "You are not giving up this right to control cricket. You are insisting that you can select team India, the Ranji teams. In that case can you say I will only associate with one body and not the other? Can you say I will take in one association and not the other? You have to let everyone in and give them equal opportunities." 
 
The CJI also added that the Lodha panel measures don’t suggest any restriction of the rights of the BCCI or its member associations, but in fact, they were only proposals to open up membership to more regions and people. 
 
"Cricket is a game of glamour. Every other youngster is aspiring to become Dhonis and Kohlis. The associations must also fall in line and accept these reforms," he said. 
 
Moreover, the CJI added that even the International Cricket Council had a one nation, one vote policy. "Sri Lanka is just the half of Delhi. Don't you think in ICC regardless of population, different countries have one vote? If it can work with the international body can't it work for BCCI?" he said.

BCCI can’t claim to act as an association, says the Supreme Court of India

The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Indian+Premier+League&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Indian Premier League</a> (IPL) is the most-attended cricket league on Earth. It ranks sixth among <keyword id="6356028" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Sports">sports</keyword> leagues, and became the first sporting event in history to be broadcast live on YouTube back in 2010. 
 Brand IPL is a beast. It was pegged at a whopping $3.2 billion in 2014, and <keyword id="6354756" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="BCCI">BCCI</keyword> claims the 2015 <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Indian+Premier+League&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">IPL</a> season contributed over $182 million to the Indian economy. 
 
In 2016, the title sponsor of the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Indian+Premier+League&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">IPL</a> is <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Vivo+Electronics&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Vivo Electronics</a>. That means the league is now officially known as the <keyword id="215177" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Vivo">Vivo</keyword> <keyword id="6354831" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Indian-Premier-League">Indian Premier League</keyword>. Just like the IPL, the history of IPL’s title sponsorship is also muddled in a bit of controversy, confusion and drama. 
 
Back in 2008, DLF, Indian's biggest real estate company, paid a hefty sum of Rs. 200 Crores (around $36.25 million), to own the title rights for the first five years of the tournament. However, after the given period, DLF decided not to renew its contract. This forced <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=BCCI&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">BCCI</a> to issue a new tender, with a base price of Rs. 300 Crores. 
 
This was also the time when the match fixing scandal struck hard, and there was widespread skepticism about the future of the tournament. 
 
In the 2013 season of the IPL, Ankeet Chavan, Ajit Chandila and S Sreesanth were arrested over charges of spot- fixing. 
 
There were allegations that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Chennai+Super+Kings+&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Chennai Super Kings </a>team principle Gurunath Meiyappan and <keyword id="13802" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Rajasthan-Royals">Rajasthan Royals</keyword> co-owner Raj Kundra were involved in betting. 
 
The BCCI banned the three cricketers for life, CSK and Rajasthan Royals were banned from the tournament for two years and Meiyappan and Kundra, were banned for life. 
 
Anyway, Pepsi struck a new title sponsorship deal in 2012. The amount was almost double the original title sponsorship deal <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=DLF&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">DLF</a> signed back in 2008, and everybody was happy. Officials were positive that despite all the negative colours IPL had been painted in, the league will endure. 
 
The deal was clinched for a solid Rs 396.8 Crores (around $71.77 million) for the next five years (2013-17). <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Airtel&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Airtel</a>, India’s largest telecom company also bid Rs. 316 Crores (around $57.27 million), but was obviously outbid. 
 
However, in 2015, the beverage giant pulled out from a five-year deal that was to end in 2017. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=PepsiCo&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">PepsiCo</a>'s decision to end its deal with IPL was reportedly caused by the spot-fixing scandal which shook the game in 2013. 
 
In 2016, mobile company Vivo replaced <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=PepsiCo&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">PepsiCo</a> as the title sponsor of the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Indian+Premier+League&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Indian Premier League </a>(IPL), and the game continues.

<keyword id="6354756" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="BCCI">BCCI</keyword>’s crucial Working Committee meeting was adjourned by President Jagmohan Dalmiya after witnessing high drama over the presence of its former chief N Srinivasan. "The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Working Committee meeting was adjourned sine die after deciding to seek the opinion of the Hon'ble Supreme Court whether Mr. <keyword id="151653" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="N-Srinivasan">N. Srinivasan</keyword> could attend the meetings of the BCCI as the authorised representative of Tamil Nadu Cricket Association," BCCI Secretary Anurag Thakur said in a brief statement. The working committee was to discuss the report of the four-member working group on the roadmap for conducting the <keyword id="6354312" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="IPL">IPL</keyword> in the wake of the two-year suspension of two franchises -- Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals -- by the Supreme Court-appointed Justice RM Lodha committee. 

	The meeting was postponed as the members argued over the presence of Srinivasan, who was earlier barred by the Supreme Court from contesting the BCCI President's post following the IPL spot-fixing scandal. 
 

	In his defence, Srinivasan, who attended the meeting as President of the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association, placed Justice Sri Krishna's opinion which said he was entitled to attend the meeting, an official who attended the meeting said. 
 

	But some BCCI members countered that argument and claimed that the Supreme Court had made it clear that he should stay away from BCCI meetings. 
 

	"Since there was no clarity on the legal status of Mr Srinivsan, President adjourned the meeting after the BCCI legal adviser Ushanath Banerjee also said that he was not sure about Srinivasan's legal standing as of now," the official said. 
 

	The official said that Srinivasan was specifically told not to attend the meeting and among those who tried to dissuade him were IPL chairman Rajeev Shukla and BCCI Treasurer Anirudh Chaudhary. However, the Chennai strongman did not give in and attended the meeting. 
 

	Srinivasan tried explaining his stance to the BCCI members by insisting that there was no conflict of interest in his position as an administrator and as owner of Indian Cements -- the company which owned CSK. 
 

	The BCCI, it is learnt, has decided to call an emergency working committee meeting in the first week of September to finalise the date of its Annual General Meeting, which is likely to be held in Kolkata on September 27. 
 

	Today, the working committee was to discuss the Justice Lodha Committee report and the subsequent recommendations of the Working Group. 
 

	The meeting was also set to deliberate on the the Madras High Court order directing the BCCI, India Cements and others involved to submit their counter affidavits to the petition which has been filed by CSK Ltd. 
 

	The High Court has directed the parties to file their written submissions within a certain time period and the next hearing has been scheduled for September 23. 
 

	The two-time champions CSK had moved the Madras HC challenging the suspension. The first bench of the High Court had found the petition maintainable and issued notice to the Board of Control for Cricket in India. 
 

	Other key points on the agenda were the NCA committee recommendations on whether to keep the apex academy in Bangalore, discuss affiliation status of Chattisgarh, Bihar and Manipur and the technical committee recommendation among others. 
 

	Appointment of India's next coach was not on the agenda but the working committee was to ask the Cricket Advisory Committee, comprising Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman to finalise the name. 
 Yesterday, the IPL Governing Council had recommended Having two news teams for the next two editions of <keyword id="6354831" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-Premier-League">Indian Premier League</keyword> in place of Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals.

Srinivasan's presence creates high drama at BCCI meeting

<keyword id="6355164" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="ICC">ICC</keyword> Chairman <keyword id="6379537" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Shashank-Manohar">Shashank Manohar</keyword> has resigned from his post citing personal reasons. While the tenure was of two years, he held the position only for nearly eight months. 
 
The 59-year-old mailed his resignation letter to ICC CEO Dave Richardson, and did not clarify the exact reason behind the decision.

 However, as per sources, he took the decision since <keyword id="6354756" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BCCI">BCCI</keyword> now holds enough authority to block the constitutional and financial reforms that were set to be passed by the ICC at its next board meeting.

To be passed, a reform needs 2/3rd majority but <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Supreme-Court-says-Indias-cricket-board-cannot-disburse-funds-order-for-independent-auditor/articleshow/54972937.cms">BCCI</a> seems to have brought Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe on its side, which probably led Manohar to resign, expecting a loss of face.

"I was elected unopposed as the first independent Chairman of ICC last year. I have tried to do my best and have tried to be fair and impartial in deciding matters in the functioning of the Board and in matters related to Member Boards along with the able support of all Directors," said Manohar’s resignation letter. 
 
"However, for personal reasons it is not possible for me to hold the august office of ICC Chairman and hence I am tendering my resignation as Chairman with immediate effect. 
 
"I take this opportunity to thank all the Directors, the Management and staff of ICC for supporting me wholeheartedly. I wish ICC all the very best and hope it achieves greater heights," he concluded.

Shashank Manohar resigns from ICC citing personal reasons

Till last year, 24-year-old <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=KESHAV+BANSAL&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Keshav Bansal</a> was busy running a mobile handset company as the Director of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=INTEX+TECHNOLOGIES&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Intex Technologies India Ltd</a>. Today, he is the youngest owner of an <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=IPL&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">IPL</a> team- the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=GUJARAT+LIONS&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Gujarat Lions</a>. 
 According to him, it took a mere 20 minutes to convince his father Narendra Bansal, who is the Chairman and Managing Director of <keyword id="6366627" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Intex">Intex</keyword> Technologies that he had what is needed to run an <keyword id="6354312" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="IPL">IPL</keyword> franchise. 
 
Talking to Livemint about his journey of owning an IPL team, Bansal admitted that he was infact in discussions with <keyword id="6354756" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="BCCI">BCCI</keyword> for a long-term sponsorship association for Intex as an on-ground sponsor for the IPL. 
 
“That was six months before the auctions. Coincidentally, BCCI members bounced off the idea for bidding for a team. I got back to the office, researched and made a formal presentation to my father. It took us 20 minutes to decide and my father has supported me through this,” said Bansal. 
 
Bansal, who grew up in a joint family studied at The Heritage School in Vasant Kunj before pursuing management AT IILM Institute of High Education in New Delhi. In between, he had also spent a year at the Manchester School of Business. 
 
When he joined Intex, he was put in the logistics department and had to work his way to the company’s marketing team before becoming its Director. 
By his own admission, Bansal has been actively involved in making ad films for the company right from strategy to ideation. 
 
In the past too, he has had a reputation for taking on things at a young age. For example, he held his first press conference at 20 when Farhan Akhtar was appointed as Intex’s brand ambassador. 
 
Owning an IPL team for Bansal ultimately boils down to a chapter in marketing. 
 “Intex Technologies and IPL have the same target audience—the youth. We have been majorly focusing on cricket to fulfil marketing goals. With <keyword id="1641060" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Gujarat-lions">Gujarat Lions</keyword>, we have further strengthened the association and made it more meaningful..,” said Bansal in an interview to Mint. 
 
That however doesn’t imply that he does not take an interest in cricket. But, at the same time, he claims he is equally fond of other sports as well. Naturally, he was also personally involved in the selection of players for the Gujarat Lions. 
 
The team is captained by <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=SURESH+RAINA&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Suresh Raina</a> who is aided my coach Brad Hodge. Others players include Ravindra Jadeja, <keyword id="55681" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Brendon-McCullum">Brendon McCullum</keyword>, James Faulkner and Dwayne Bravo, to name a few. 
 
Once his two-year association with IPL ends, Bansal already has another dream he would like converting to reality- that of taking Intex global.

<keyword id="31278" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Lata-Mangeshkar" source="Orion">Lata Mangeshkar</keyword>, India's most loved singer who had once moved Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru to tears, leaves behind a teary-eyed nation of admirers who grew up listening to her immutable voice give wings to the words of poets and the screen careers of legions of heroines. India's Melody Queen, who also composed music for Marathi films and was a producer as well, and had the distinction of being conferred with the highest civilian honours of India and France, passed away on Sunday morning at the Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai, where she had been admitted because of Covid-related complications on January 11. Lata Didi, as she was known among her family and followers, was 92 and is survived by her siblings -- playback singer and composer Meena Khadilkar, popular singer and restaurateur Asha Bhosale, singer <keyword id="146736" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Usha-Mangeshkar" source="Orion">Usha Mangeshkar</keyword>, and music director Hridayanath Mangeshkar. She never married, but was close to the late Raj Singh Dungarpur, the aristocratic former cricketer and President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) from 1996 to 1999. One of India's most loved voices, Lata Mangeshkar was the recipient of three National Film Awards, seven Filmfare awards, and of course, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1989. She was conferred the Bharat Ratna in 2001, becoming the second singer after M.S. Subbulakshmi to be so honoured, and the French awarded her the Officer of the Legion of Honour. In 1974, Lata Mangeshkar became the first Indian to perform at the Royal Albert Hall, London. She had indeed come a long, long way since the time when the first song that she recorded for a film -- 'Kiti Hasaal' in 1942 -- was dropped in the final cut. Born in what was then the princely state of Indore on September 28, 1929, to the classical singer, Marathi theatre actor and writer of musical plays Deenanath Mangeshkar and his wife Shevanti (Shudhamati), Lata Mangeshkar was originally named Hema by her parents, but they later changed it to Lata after the character Latika from one of her father's musical plays. Lata Mangeshkar's association with the performing arts began when she was five and started appearing in her father's musical plays, and it continued even after her father's premature death in 1942, thanks to his good friend, the actor and director Master Vinayak (Vinayak Damodar Karnataki), who took the family under his wings. It was Master Vinayak who took Lata Mangeshkar to Mumbai, paved her way into the world of Marathi cinema, got her to take Hindustani classical music lessons from Ustad Aman Ali Khan of the Bhendi Bazaar Gharana, and introduced her to Vasant Desai, V. Shantaram's favourite music composer. But it was not until Master Vinayak's death in 1948 that the struggling singer-actor found the person whom she considered to be her "godfather" -- the music composer Ghulam Haider, who gave Lata Mangeshkar her first big break with the song 'Dil Mera Toda, Mujhe Kahin Ka Na Chhora' in the movie 'Majboor' (1948). It was her first big break. Haider took his protege to Shashadhar Mukherjee, the Filmistan boss now better known as Kajol and Rani Mukherjee's grandfather, for his film, 'Shaheed' (1948), but he turned her down because he found her voice to be "too thin". Lata Mangeshkar proved him oh-so wrong just a year later when her song 'Aayega Aanewaala', filmed on the gorgeous Madhubala in Kamal Amrohi's debut directorial, 'Mahal' (1949), became an ageless hit. And in one of life's delicious ironies, Mukherjee's grand-daughter lip-synced the 'Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge' song, 'Mere Khwabon Mein', which was sung by none other than Lata Mangeshkar, as well as the other numbers picturised on her and Shah Rukh Khan. Since 'Mahal', Lata Mangeshkar was courted by just about every music director of note -- from Anil Biswas to S.D. Burman (and his son Rahul Dev, whose first and last song she sang), Naushad (who had asked her to sing like the then reigning nightingale, Noorjehan), Madan Mohan, Shankar-Jaikishan, Laxmikant-Pyarelal (for whom she's said to have sung 700 songs in 35 years), and Kalyanji-Anandji. And she worked with every contemporary composer of note -- from Anand-Milind, sons of Chitragupt, with whom she had also worked, and Anu Malik, Sardar Malik's son, to Ilaiyaraaja and A.R. Rahman. It is said she worked with music directors from 13 states in her star-studded career. After Noorjehan moved to Pakistan, Lata Mangeshkar became the go-to playback singer for every film producer and music composer. She did not disappoint them. Lata Mangeshkar lent her voice to an endless succession of chart-topping numbers in Hindi cinema, from 'Allah Tero Naam' and 'Rangeela Re' to the 'Satyam Shivam Sundaram' title track, to 'Lukka Chuppi' in 'Rang De Basanti', apart from songs in Marathi (she also composed the music for several Marathi films in her 'Anandghan' avatar), Bengali, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, and Sinhala. In 1974, the Guinness Book of Records listed Lata Mangeshkar as the most recorded artiste in human history, stating that she had recorded "not less than 25,000 solo, duet and chorus-backed songs in 20 Indian languages" between 1948 and 1974. The claim was contested by her long-time rival, Mohammad Rafi, who claimed to have sung around 28,000 songs. After Rafi's death, the Guinness Book in its 1984 edition listed Lata Mangeshkar in its entry for 'Most Recordings', but it also recorded Rafi's claim. Later editions of the Guinness Book said Lata Mangeshkar had sung no less than 30,000 songs from 1948 to 1987. For 73 years, from 1943 to 2015, when she recorded her last song for a film (the Indo-Norwegian production, 'Dunno Y2...Life Is A Moment', which was all about gay love), Lata Mangeshkar commanded a fan following and an inimitable reputation with not many parallels in the Indian performing arts. The late Yash Chopra, who was one of Lata Mangeshkar's favourite directors, said in an article he had penned for BBC.com on the occasion of the singer's 75th birthday (not longer after she had sung the famous 'Veer Zaara' song, 'Tere Liye Hum Hain Jiye', with Roop Kumar Rathod): "I see God's blessing in her voice."
