<p>Since May 2, the day before the big sell-off in the Treasury market started and sent yields soaring, the real is down 15% against the dollar.</p>
<p>Thursday, the Central Bank of Brazil (BCB) launched a program of intervention into foreign exchange markets to stem the depreciation of the Brazilian real, and so far, it appears to be having its exact intended effect on the currency.</p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The real is surging today, up around 2.6% against the dollar.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The new BCB intervention program "s<span>hould eliminate some of the uncertainty, and help the [real] trade closer to its peers," says <span>Barclays co-head of Latin America economics and strategy Marcelo Salmon. "</span>But we don’t believe it changes the weakening trend of currency."</span></span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span>Strategists generally agree that the key driver of real depreciation recently has been rising Treasury yields due to the changing outlook for U.S. monetary policy, and most across the Street expect that to continue, so naturally, the real is expected to weaken further against the dollar.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span>However, there is another key driver of real depreciation that explains why Brazil's currency has fallen so much faster than those in other emerging markets that also find themselves at the behest of the Federal Reserve.</span></span></p>
<p>The relatively large stock of investment by foreign companies in Brazil's economy – at $785 billion – means there are a lot of businesses trying to hedge currency risk by selling reals and buying dollars.</p>
<p>"C<span style="line-height: 1.5em;">urrent [Brazilian real] pressure is mainly due to corporate hedging and speculative flows in the derivatives market," BofA Merrill Lynch strategists David Beker and Claudio Irigoyen told clients in a note earlier this month.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span>That's why the new intervention program announced by the BCB Thursday sees the central bank offering $500 million of dollar swaps in the currency derivatives market on a daily basis (Monday through Thursday) for the rest of 2013, and $1 billion of FX spot lines on Fridays.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span>Essentially, the BCB is taking a big short position in the U.S. dollar.</span></span></p>
<p><span>"With 18 weeks left this year, the BCB will auction at least another US$36bn in swaps (current outstanding is US$41bn) and US$18bn in FX lines," says Beker in a new note today analyzing the intervention plan.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span>The BCB is conducting the majority of the real-bolstering intervention in the derivatives market as opposed to the spot market because under the latter scenario, the central bank has to burn through the U.S. dollar component of its foreign reserves in order to prop up the currency, whereas with swaps, foreign reserves don't come into play.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span>Beker points out that relative to Brazil's stock of foreign direct investment, the country's foreign currency reserves are small, which is why it has to be careful with spot intervention.</span></span></p>
<p><span>"At US$374bn currently, Brazilian international reserves are an important cushion, but in a stress scenario of outflows/hedging they will not be able to avoid [Brazilian real] depreciation pressures," says Beker. "This is why the BCB needs to use international reserves with parsimony."</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span>While the BCB intervention program is specific to the plight of the Brazilian real, Barclays strategist Sebastián Brown argues it could signal the beginning of a broader policy shift across emerging markets.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span></span></span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">"Beyond the immediate effects on Brazil, we believe that the BCB’s actions could have broader implications on the price-action of high-carry EM currencies, such as the [Turkish lira, South African rand, Indonesian rupiah, Indian rupee], and particularly the [Mexican peso]," says Brown. "The BCB’s decision to intervene could be interpreted as a signal that the tolerance for weaker exchange rates across EMs is close to running out, given some evidence of increasing inflationary pressures."</span></p>

BCB seeks Bangladesh army's assurance for hosting women's T20 World Cup

<p>Here are three headlines out of the EMs in the last 12 hours:</p>
<p><strong>The Reserve Bank Of <keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> Sells Dollars To Oil Companies</strong>: In its effort to prop up its collapsing rupee, the RBI said it will enter into USD-INR swaps with state-owned oil-marketing companies.</p>
<p>"The RBI will meet the entire daily dollar requirement of three public sector oil-marketing companies through a sell/buy USD-INR swap for a fixed tenor, thereby removing the largest source of dollar demand from the market," noted Morgan Stanley's Hans Redeker.</p>
<p><strong>The Brazilian Central Bank Raises Rates</strong>: Late Wednesday, the BCB raised its benchmark interest rate by 50 basis points to 9.00%. In the past four meetings, the BCB has raised this rate by a total of 175 basis points.</p>
<p>"Contrary to our ongoing view, the passthrough inflation pressure due to currency depreciation – although mostly built into our inflation forecasting model – could necessitate a further hike through Q4 and Q1 next year," said Societe Generale's Dev Ashish. "This would particularly be the case if the currency remains at depreciated levels for a long enough period of time."</p>
<p><strong>Bank <keyword id="8692" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Indonesia">Indonesia</keyword> Raises Rates</strong>: Thursday morning, <a href="http://in.reuters.com/article/2013/08/29/indonesia-economy-rate-idINL4N0GU1TZ20130829">BI raised its benchmark interest rate</a> 50 basis points to 7.0%.</p>

3 Big Emerging Market Central Banks Made Moves To Bolster Their Currencies

<p><div class="image-container float_right" style="width:479px"><div class="image"><p class="source"> REUTERS/Ueslei Marcelino</p></div></div>Earlier this year we saw <keyword id="6355226" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Brazil">Brazil</keyword>ians take to the streets to protest poor public services and rising costs. The erosion of income by higher <keyword id="22195" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Inflation">inflation</keyword> is certainly a deep rooted issue in Brazil.</p>
<p>Then there's the weakness in the Brazilian real, down 20% against the greenback. The real is now one of the worst performing major emerging market currencies.</p>
<p>Consumer prices in Brazil slowed to 6.27% in July, led by a marked cooling in the price of food and transportation. While the overall level is still high, it is within the upper end of the central bank's range.</p>
<p>Though July's headline number suggests inflation is now trending down, the central bank will have to factor in weakness in the Brazilian real which will only add to inflation concerns. </p>
<p>With that in mind, Brazil's central bank monetary policy committee (Copom) is expected to raise its benchmark Selic lending rate by 50 basis points to 9%.</p>
<p>"Even the BCB’s conservative passthrough coefficient of 0.5 (for 10% depreciation of the currency) implies at least one full percentage point support to IPCA inflation," writes Dev Ashish of Societe Generale. "With our less conservative estimate of this coefficient between 0.8 and 1.2, we believe that inflation will actually be 2% points higher due solely to exchange rate depreciation."</p>
<p>Brazil already unveiled a $60 billion cash-and-insurance program to bolster the real.</p>
<p>Concerns about 1. The Fed tapering its asset purchase program. 2. Brazil's economic growth 3. The current account deficit are expected to continue to "exert inflationary pressures" through the first half of 2014.</p>

2 Reasons Brazil's Central Bank Is Expected To Raise Key Interest Rate

As one interviewee put in in the penultimate episode, "<span>A lot of people believe Debbie knows Bob's secrets, whatever they may be."</span></p><p><span>As Durst's legal troubles have been well covered in the press, so, too, have various snippets of Charatan's </span>biography<span>. The pair kept in contact throughout Durst's travels in the '90s, and she was reportedly a "lifeline" for him whenever he visited New York.</p><p><span></span><strong>They were secretly married in December 2000, just before the death of Durst's friend Susan Berman<span>.</span></strong></p><p><strong><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container"><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div><br /></span></strong><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The timing is important, as it's shortly after the Kathie Durst case was reopened, and only weeks before </span><a href="http://www.vulture.com/2015/02/susan-berman-the-jinx.html" data-track="Body Text Link: Internal: vulture">the death of Susan Berman</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">.</span></p><p>Their wedding was apparently a rushed affair - 15 minutes, one witness, a rabbi hired from the phone book. <span>"Durst was rather taciturn," the rabbi later told </span><a href="http://www.nydailynews.com/archives/news/secret-wedding-durst-gal-pal-article-1.926200" data-track="Body Text Link: External">the New York <em>Daily News</em></a><span>. "He was not buoyant and didn't smile." <em>The Jinx </em>implies Durst married Charatan to prevent her from testifying against him, and as for what was in it for her, a former co-worker told <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2003/09/20/nyregion/for-heir-accused-of-killing-a-loyal-and-tough-ally.html" data-track="Body Text Link: External">the <em>Times</em></a>, "<span>For Debbie, it's all about the money. <span>When she met Bob, she hit pay dirt."</span></span></span></p><p><strong style="line-height: 1.5em;">Charatan was a frequent visitor during Durst's Galveston trial, and a confidante during his stint in jail.</strong></p><p><strong><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></strong></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">As seen in </span><em style="line-height: 1.5em;">The Jinx</em><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">, Charatan was the driving force behind Durst's decision to fire attorney Michael Kennedy and go with a local lawyer, Dick DeGeurin.</span></p><p>According to transcripts of jailhouse phone calls obtained by <a href="http://nypost.com/2003/09/26/the-durst-tapes-bitter-robert-planned-to-knock-off-his-brother/" data-track="Body Text Link: External">the New York Post</a>, the decision was a purely mercenary one: Kennedy wanted to go with an insanity defense, which could jeopardize both Durst and Charatan's share of his family's fortune. (When Durst jumped bail, police <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2003/09/20/nyregion/for-heir-accused-of-killing-a-loyal-and-tough-ally.html" data-track="Body Text Link: External">prevented</a> her from withdrawing $1.8 million from his accounts.) Other parts of the transcripts reveal Charatan saving Durst from potentially incriminating himself, interrupting him when he threatened revenge against Berman's friend Kim Lankford, and reminding him that his armed appearance outside his brother's house was a "suicide" attempt.</p><p>Despite all this, Durst didn't fully trust Charatan, <a href="http://nypost.com/2003/09/26/the-durst-tapes-bitter-robert-planned-to-knock-off-his-brother/" data-track="Body Text Link: External">telling</a> his sister their wedding was "a marriage of convenience ... <span>I had to have Debrah to write my checks. I was setting myself up to be a fugitive</span>." Later, Charatan appeared on what police claimed was Durst's <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/1446873/Family-lives-in-fear-of-heir-who-dismembered-his-neighbour.html" data-track="Body Text Link: External">"enemies list."</a></p><p><strong>She's apparently still married to Durst, and handles his real-estate deals.</strong></p><p><strong><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></strong>Charatan eventually moved out of the Fifth Avenue apartment she'd shared with Durst, and traded it up for another one; when she sold that apartment in November, the <a href="http://nypost.com/2014/11/26/wife-of-real-estate-heir-robert-durst-sells-fifth-avenue-pad/" data-track="Body Text Link: External">tabloids</a> still called her Durst's wife. Putin also had an interpreter at the meeting.&#xa0;</p><p>Gross has worked as a translator for the government for years, at least as far back as 2008 when she accompanied former First Lady Laura Bush to Sochi, Russia as her interpreter. She was also seen alongside former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson in Moscow in April 2017.&#xa0;</p><h2>Trump's flip-flop on Russian election meddling</h2><p>The decision to meet with Putin alone was broadly criticized, as the president's opponents felt he could not be trusted to speak privately with the Russian leader.&#xa0;</p><p>This view has been compounded by Trump's performance during a press conference with Putin in which he appeared to side with the Russian leader over the US intelligence community on the subject of Russian election interference. At the time, Trump said he didn't see <a href="https://www.vox.com/2018/7/16/17576956/transcript-putin-trump-russia-helsinki-press-conference">"any reason"</a> why Russia would interfere in the US electoral process, contradicting conclusions from US intelligence agencies as well as recent statements from Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats.&#xa0;</p><p>Trump walked back on this on Tuesday after he'd returned to the US, stating he agreed with the US intelligence community's assessment that Russia meddled in the 2016 US presidential election.</p><h2><span>'Ms. Marina Gross was the only other American in the room'</span></h2><p>Two Democratic lawmakers on Tuesday <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/trump-putin-summit-interpreter-marina-gross-2018-7?r=UK&amp;IR=T">called for Gross to be interviewed before Congress</a> in relation to the Trump-Putin meeting in Helsinki.&#xa0;</p><p><span>Democratic Rep. Bill Pascrell of New Jersey wrote <a href="https://pascrell.house.gov/media-center/press-releases/pascrell-calls-on-oversight-committee-to-interview-putin-meeting">a letter</a> to Republican Rep. Trey Gowdy and Democratic Rep. Elijah Cummings,&#xa0;the Chairman and Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, demanding the committee hear&#xa0;public testimony from Gross on the meeting.&#xa0;</span></p><p>"Given the public concessions" Trump made to Putin "by siding against the US intelligence community, law enforcement, and our military officials about Russia's attack on our democracy, Congress and the American public deserve to know the details of their private conversation," Pascrell said in the letter. "Serving as a translator, it has been reported that Ms. Marina Gross was the only other American in the room and so the sole reliable witness to the conversation between the two world leaders."</p><p>Meanwhile, Democratic Sen. Marcus said that, while he doesn't "agree with every move that he makes," Trump has still "produced more than anybody else... If we look at this country, I would say that we are better off today than we were eight years ago or six years ago."</p><p>Marcus retired from Home Depot back in 2002, and the company did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment. <p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><ul><li><strong>President Donald Trump's recent trip to Europe is under a great deal of scrutiny after he clashed with key allies and had a controversial meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.&#xa0;</strong></li><li><strong>In this context, many are concerned Trump is doing immense damage to America's global standing.</strong></li><li><strong>A majority of Americans (61%) feel the US is less respected across the globe with Trump in the White House, according to an&#xa0;<a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/donald-trump/nbc-news-poll-american-attitudes-toward-russia-worsen-under-trump-n892196" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">NBC News/SurveyMonkey poll released Wednesday</a>.</strong></li><li><strong>Experts warn it could take "years" for the world to trust the US again as Trump continues to attack the international institutions it played a fundamental role in building following World War II.</strong></li></ul><p>President Donald Trump returned from a trip to Europe this week in which he insulted key US allies and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/nato-goes-to-emergency-session-after-trump-calls-merkel-angela-2018-7">caused a crisis at a NATO summit in Brussels</a>, was met with <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/f-trump-crop-circle-uk-2018-7">nationwide protests in the UK</a>, and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/john-brennan-trump-press-conference-with-putin-treason-2018-7">sided with Russian President Vladimir Putin</a> over the US intelligence community on the subject of election interference during a now infamous press conference in Helsinki.&#xa0;</p><p>Once back in the US, Trump on Tuesday walked back on his statements regarding Russian election meddling, stating he believed the conclusion from US intelligence agencies that the Kremlin interfered in the US presidential election, though he also said it could be "other people also."</p><p>But on Wednesday, Trump claimed <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/trump-contradicts-intelligence-chief-says-russia-is-not-targeting-us-2018-7">Russia is not planning future attacks on US elections</a>, directly contradicting statements made by Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats earlier this week.&#xa0;</p><h2>Americans think Trump is ruining their country's reputation</h2><p>In this context, many are concerned Trump is doing immense damage to America's global standing by pushing away allies and taking the word of foreign adversaries over US intelligence agencies.</p><p>A majority of Americans (61%) feel the US is less respected across the globe with Trump in the White House, according to an&#xa0;<a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/donald-trump/nbc-news-poll-american-attitudes-toward-russia-worsen-under-trump-n892196" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">NBC News/SurveyMonkey poll released Wednesday</a>.</p><p>Meanwhile, experts warn it could take "years" for the world to trust the US again as Trump continues to attack the international institutions it played a fundamental role in building following World War II, especially the NATO alliance and the United Nations.</p><h2>'It will take a long time for the world to trust US stability again'</h2><p>David Rothkopf, a foreign policy expert and visiting scholar at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, warned against hyperbolic assessments of the impact Trump can have on America's place in the world.</p><p>"Nothing is irrevocable," Rothkopf told Business Insider. "Much of America's global standing is based on factors that Trump won't or can't greatly diminish - from the vitality of our economy to our innovation, the strength of our armed forces to our history."</p><p>But Rothkopf also noted that Trump does have the capacity to do "long-term&#xa0;damage to our alliances, our crucial international relationships and the international system that has been essential to our peace and stability since World War II."</p><p>These relationships could recover quickly, Rothkopf said, but "underfunded institutions" may take longer to recover. What will take longest to address is the "degree to which countries like China or groups of countries like the EU take the lead in our absence."</p><h2>'It will be hard to reverse the gains of dictators'</h2><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>Rothkopf also warned of the broader impact of Trump's tendency to cozy up to authoritarians such as Putin and his willingness to meet with North Korea's Kim Jong Un.</p><p>"It will be hard to reverse the gains of dictators and opportunists who take advantage of Trump policies to extend their influence," Rothkopf said. "And it will take a long time for the world to trust US stability again ... several election cycles for them to tell whether Trump was an aberration or just a symptom of a greater problem with America."</p><p>Célia Belin, a visiting fellow in the Center on the United States and Europe at the Brookings Institution, expressed similar sentiments.&#xa0;</p><p>"No damage is ever irrevocable when it comes to global standing, but it could take years to repair," Belin told Business Insider, adding that the US is becoming an "unreliable and untrustworthy actor" under Trump.</p><p>Trump has routinely made <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-nato-budget-is-funded-2018-7">misleading claims about the way in which NATO functions</a> and financial commitments member states have made, sometimes incorrectly suggesting other member states owe money to the US for protection.</p><p>NATO was established upon the notion of collective <keyword id="6354810" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="defense">defense</keyword>, <a href="https://www.nato.int/cps/ua/natohq/topics_110496.htm">outlined in Article 5</a> of the alliance's founding treaty. But Trump has even <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/trump-montenegro-nato-fox-news-interview-2018-7">called into question whether the US would honor Article 5</a> under his leadership, suggesting he would be reluctant to deploy the US military to come to the defense of other member states.&#xa0;</p><p>Concurrently, critics of Trump have blasted him for UN-related decisions such as pulling out of the landmark Paris climate accord.&#xa0;</p><p>As Trump pushes traditional allies away, nations will become "increasingly reluctant" to view it as a reliable partner, Belin said, adding, "Allies and partners will now refuse to trust America blindly."</p><p>"Trump's damage to US standing will be depend on how long he stays in power, and on how other nations rebalance and diversify away from the US," Belin said.</p><h2>'We will regress and spend lots of time trying to recover'</h2><p>Brandon Valeriano, the Donald Bren chair of armed <keyword id="6358883" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="politics">politics</keyword> at Marine Corps University, agrees Trump's impact on America's global standing will likely be "temporary" for the most part. But he said the next administration will have its work cut out for it because of Trump in terms of "resetting and restoring" the global order.</p><p>"Put simply, we will regress and spend lots of time trying to recover," Valeriano told Business Insider.</p><p>Heather Conley,&#xa0;director of the Europe Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said the transatlantic alliance the US helped build post-World War II was on a "slow yet steady slide" when Trump entered the White House, but added that he has "put a heavy foot on the accelerator to hasten its decline."</p><p>Conley said part of the problem is there is no general consensus in the US for what its role in the world should be moving forward.</p><p>Accordingly, Conley said the US needs to "repurpose" the transatlantic alliance for a "new generation of Americans and Europeans in the 21st&#xa0;century before it is too late," warning the trends of "<span>isolationism, nativism and anti-Semitism" are currently testing America's relationship with its traditional allies in a deeply unsettling way.&#xa0;</span></p><h2><span>'We elected someone who devalues and denigrates our core allies and partners'</span><span></span></h2><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p><span>Daniel Nexon, an associate professor in the School of Foreign Service and the Department of Government at Georgetown University, said Americans should be "extremely worried" about Trump's approach to foreign policy if they truly&#xa0;"care about the core infrastructure of American international leadership."</span></p><p>Nexon told Business Insider it's too soon to determine whether Trump has done permanent damage to America's global standing, but said that in electing him as president, the US essentially demonstrated it's not capable of choosing "competent" leaders. This sends a troubling message to the wider world and erodes trust in the US as a world power, Nexon said.&#xa0;<span></span></p><p><span>"We elected someone who devalues and denigrates our core allies and partners.
