The Bangladesh Cricket Board has sought security assurance from the country's army chief for conducting the <keyword id="21536718" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="womens-T20-World-Cup" source="keywords">women's T20 World Cup</keyword>, scheduled to be held in October 3-20 amid <keyword id="20444027" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="political-unrest" source="keywords">political unrest</keyword> in the country following ouster of former Prime Minister <keyword id="20024637" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sheikh-Hasina" source="keywords">Sheikh Hasina</keyword>. BCB seeks Bangladesh army's assurance for hosting women's T20 World Cup

Toyam Sports Limited signed up as title sponsor for India tour of Bangladesh

<p>Since May 2, the day before the big sell-off in the Treasury market started and sent yields soaring, the real is down 15% against the dollar.</p>
<p>Thursday, the Central Bank of Brazil (BCB) launched a program of intervention into foreign exchange markets to stem the depreciation of the Brazilian real, and so far, it appears to be having its exact intended effect on the currency.</p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The real is surging today, up around 2.6% against the dollar.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The new BCB intervention program "s<span>hould eliminate some of the uncertainty, and help the [real] trade closer to its peers," says <span>Barclays co-head of Latin America economics and strategy Marcelo Salmon. "</span>But we don’t believe it changes the weakening trend of currency."</span></span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span>Strategists generally agree that the key driver of real depreciation recently has been rising Treasury yields due to the changing outlook for U.S. monetary policy, and most across the Street expect that to continue, so naturally, the real is expected to weaken further against the dollar.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span>However, there is another key driver of real depreciation that explains why Brazil's currency has fallen so much faster than those in other emerging markets that also find themselves at the behest of the Federal Reserve.</span></span></p>
<p>The relatively large stock of investment by foreign companies in Brazil's economy – at $785 billion – means there are a lot of businesses trying to hedge currency risk by selling reals and buying dollars.</p>
<p>"C<span style="line-height: 1.5em;">urrent [Brazilian real] pressure is mainly due to corporate hedging and speculative flows in the derivatives market," BofA Merrill Lynch strategists David Beker and Claudio Irigoyen told clients in a note earlier this month.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span>That's why the new intervention program announced by the BCB Thursday sees the central bank offering $500 million of dollar swaps in the currency derivatives market on a daily basis (Monday through Thursday) for the rest of 2013, and $1 billion of FX spot lines on Fridays.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span>Essentially, the BCB is taking a big short position in the U.S. dollar.</span></span></p>
<p><span>"With 18 weeks left this year, the BCB will auction at least another US$36bn in swaps (current outstanding is US$41bn) and US$18bn in FX lines," says Beker in a new note today analyzing the intervention plan.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span>The BCB is conducting the majority of the real-bolstering intervention in the derivatives market as opposed to the spot market because under the latter scenario, the central bank has to burn through the U.S. dollar component of its foreign reserves in order to prop up the currency, whereas with swaps, foreign reserves don't come into play.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span>Beker points out that relative to Brazil's stock of foreign direct investment, the country's foreign currency reserves are small, which is why it has to be careful with spot intervention.</span></span></p>
<p><span>"At US$374bn currently, Brazilian international reserves are an important cushion, but in a stress scenario of outflows/hedging they will not be able to avoid [Brazilian real] depreciation pressures," says Beker. "This is why the BCB needs to use international reserves with parsimony."</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span>While the BCB intervention program is specific to the plight of the Brazilian real, Barclays strategist Sebastián Brown argues it could signal the beginning of a broader policy shift across emerging markets.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span></span></span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">"Beyond the immediate effects on Brazil, we believe that the BCB’s actions could have broader implications on the price-action of high-carry EM currencies, such as the [Turkish lira, South African rand, Indonesian rupiah, Indian rupee], and particularly the [Mexican peso]," says Brown. "The BCB’s decision to intervene could be interpreted as a signal that the tolerance for weaker exchange rates across EMs is close to running out, given some evidence of increasing inflationary pressures."</span></p>

Brazilian Currency Surges After Central Bank Launches Intervention Program To Stop The Bleeding

<p>Here are three headlines out of the EMs in the last 12 hours:</p>
<p><strong>The Reserve Bank Of <keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> Sells Dollars To Oil Companies</strong>: In its effort to prop up its collapsing rupee, the RBI said it will enter into USD-INR swaps with state-owned oil-marketing companies.</p>
<p>"The RBI will meet the entire daily dollar requirement of three public sector oil-marketing companies through a sell/buy USD-INR swap for a fixed tenor, thereby removing the largest source of dollar demand from the market," noted Morgan Stanley's Hans Redeker.</p>
<p><strong>The Brazilian Central Bank Raises Rates</strong>: Late Wednesday, the BCB raised its benchmark interest rate by 50 basis points to 9.00%. In the past four meetings, the BCB has raised this rate by a total of 175 basis points.</p>
<p>"Contrary to our ongoing view, the passthrough inflation pressure due to currency depreciation – although mostly built into our inflation forecasting model – could necessitate a further hike through Q4 and Q1 next year," said Societe Generale's Dev Ashish. "This would particularly be the case if the currency remains at depreciated levels for a long enough period of time."</p>
<p><strong>Bank <keyword id="8692" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Indonesia">Indonesia</keyword> Raises Rates</strong>: Thursday morning, <a href="http://in.reuters.com/article/2013/08/29/indonesia-economy-rate-idINL4N0GU1TZ20130829">BI raised its benchmark interest rate</a> 50 basis points to 7.0%.</p>

3 Big Emerging Market Central Banks Made Moves To Bolster Their Currencies

<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Of all the characters who cross paths with Robert Durst in </span><em style="line-height: 1.5em;">The Jinx</em><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">, perhaps the most enigmatic is Durst's second wife, Debrah Lee Charatan.</span></p><p>First seen <a href="http://www.vulture.com/2015/02/the-jinx-hbo-recap.html" data-track="Body Text Link: Internal: vulture">bailing Durst out of jail</a> after his 2001 murder arrest, Charatan appears only in archival police interview footage, where she's a brash, sarcastic presence. (She declined to be interviewed for the documentary, <a href="http://www.vulture.com/2015/03/jinx-finale-durst-says-he-killed-them-all.html" data-track="Body Text Link: Internal: vulture">perhaps wisely</a>.)</p><p>With little else to go on, both <a href="http://www.reddit.com/r/thejinx/comments/2zamno/why_did_debrah_lee_charatan_marry_a_murderer_just/" data-track="Body Text Link: External"><em>Jinx</em> fans</a> and <a href="http://www.vulture.com/2015/03/the-jinx-interesting-revelations.html" data-track="Body Text Link: Internal: vulture">the series itself</a> have speculated on the exact nature of Charatan's relationship with Durst. The pair kept in contact throughout Durst's travels in the '90s, and she was reportedly a "lifeline" for him whenever he visited New York.</p><p><span></span><strong>They were secretly married in December 2000, just before the death of Durst's friend Susan Berman<span>.</span></strong></p><p><strong><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container"><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div><br /></span></strong><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The timing is important, as it's shortly after the Kathie Durst case was reopened, and only weeks before </span><a href="http://www.vulture.com/2015/02/susan-berman-the-jinx.html" data-track="Body Text Link: Internal: vulture">the death of Susan Berman</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">.</span></p><p>Their wedding was apparently a rushed affair - 15 minutes, one witness, a rabbi hired from the phone book. <span>"Durst was rather taciturn," the rabbi later told </span><a href="http://www.nydailynews.com/archives/news/secret-wedding-durst-gal-pal-article-1.926200" data-track="Body Text Link: External">the New York <em>Daily News</em></a><span>. "He was not buoyant and didn't smile." <em>The Jinx </em>implies Durst married Charatan to prevent her from testifying against him, and as for what was in it for her, a former co-worker told <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2003/09/20/nyregion/for-heir-accused-of-killing-a-loyal-and-tough-ally.html" data-track="Body Text Link: External">the <em>Times</em></a>, "<span>For Debbie, it's all about the money. <span>When she met Bob, she hit pay dirt."</span></span></span></p><p><strong style="line-height: 1.5em;">Charatan was a frequent visitor during Durst's Galveston trial, and a confidante during his stint in jail.</strong></p><p><strong><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></strong></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">As seen in </span><em style="line-height: 1.5em;">The Jinx</em><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">, Charatan was the driving force behind Durst's decision to fire attorney Michael Kennedy and go with a local lawyer, Dick DeGeurin.</span></p><p>According to transcripts of jailhouse phone calls obtained by <a href="http://nypost.com/2003/09/26/the-durst-tapes-bitter-robert-planned-to-knock-off-his-brother/" data-track="Body Text Link: External">the New York Post</a>, the decision was a purely mercenary one: Kennedy wanted to go with an insanity defense, which could jeopardize both Durst and Charatan's share of his family's fortune. (When Durst jumped bail, police <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2003/09/20/nyregion/for-heir-accused-of-killing-a-loyal-and-tough-ally.html" data-track="Body Text Link: External">prevented</a> her from withdrawing $1.8 million from his accounts.) Other parts of the transcripts reveal Charatan saving Durst from potentially incriminating himself, interrupting him when he threatened revenge against Berman's friend Kim Lankford, and reminding him that his armed appearance outside his brother's house was a "suicide" attempt.</p><p>Despite all this, Durst didn't fully trust Charatan, <a href="http://nypost.com/2003/09/26/the-durst-tapes-bitter-robert-planned-to-knock-off-his-brother/" data-track="Body Text Link: External">telling</a> his sister their wedding was "a marriage of convenience ... <span>I had to have Debrah to write my checks. I was setting myself up to be a fugitive</span>." <p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>After months of anticipation, Kanye West finally dropped his latest album, "The Life of Pablo," following a performance on "Saturday Night Live."</p><p>West announced that the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/stream-kanye-west-the-life-of-pablo-album-online-2016-2">album is not available anywhere except on Tidal for the next week</a>, which sent his fans clamoring to listen to it over the music-streaming service.</p><p><span>West originally had the album available for sale as a download, from Tidal, as well as for streaming. But he quickly&#xa0;changed his mind, removing the ability for users to download it, but not before some had paid cash for a download of "The Life of Pablo" that never materialized.</span></p><p><span>It's still available for streaming, if you subscribe to Tidal, but there's no sign of the download, even for those who paid for it.</span></p><p>Furious customers took to Twitter to voice their frustration with Tidal:</p><p><div></div></p><p><div></div></p><p class="embed-spacer"><div></div></p><p class="embed-spacer"><div></div></p><p class="embed-spacer"><div></div></p><p class="embed-spacer">Further inciting the anger are <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/Music/comments/45wpeh/why_is_almost_no_one_talking_about_how_tidal_has/">claims that Tidal has not been responsive</a> to customers who have been charged money but have not received the download. Fans have been reporting that Tidal has not been answering some customers' support tickets.</p><p class="embed-spacer"><div></div></p><p class="embed-spacer"><div></div></p><p class="embed-spacer">This is not Tidal's first misstep with the release of a major album. In January, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/jay-zs-music-streaming-service-tidal-leaked-rihannas-new-album-2016-1">Tidal a</a><span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/jay-zs-music-streaming-service-tidal-leaked-rihannas-new-album-2016-1">ccidentally published&#xa0;Rihanna's</a>&#xa0;new album "Anti" before it was set to go live. Tidal screwed up the release of Kanye's new album, and people are furious

<p><div class="image-container float_right" style="width:479px"><div class="image"><p class="source"> REUTERS/Ueslei Marcelino</p></div></div>Earlier this year we saw <keyword id="6355226" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Brazil">Brazil</keyword>ians take to the streets to protest poor public services and rising costs. The erosion of income by higher <keyword id="22195" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Inflation">inflation</keyword> is certainly a deep rooted issue in Brazil.</p>
<p>Then there's the weakness in the Brazilian real, down 20% against the greenback. The real is now one of the worst performing major emerging market currencies.</p>
<p>Consumer prices in Brazil slowed to 6.27% in July, led by a marked cooling in the price of food and transportation. While the overall level is still high, it is within the upper end of the central bank's range.</p>
<p>Though July's headline number suggests inflation is now trending down, the central bank will have to factor in weakness in the Brazilian real which will only add to inflation concerns. </p>
<p>With that in mind, Brazil's central bank monetary policy committee (Copom) is expected to raise its benchmark Selic lending rate by 50 basis points to 9%.</p>
<p>"Even the BCB’s conservative passthrough coefficient of 0.5 (for 10% depreciation of the currency) implies at least one full percentage point support to IPCA inflation," writes Dev Ashish of Societe Generale. "With our less conservative estimate of this coefficient between 0.8 and 1.2, we believe that inflation will actually be 2% points higher due solely to exchange rate depreciation."</p>
<p>Brazil already unveiled a $60 billion cash-and-insurance program to bolster the real.</p>
<p>Concerns about 1. The Fed tapering its asset purchase program. 2. Brazil's economic growth 3. The current account deficit are expected to continue to "exert inflationary pressures" through the first half of 2014.</p>
