The e-commerce giant also saw a 50% hike in the number of transacting consumers as compared to the last BBD. Interestingly, more than 50% of Flipkart Plus shoppers came in from Tier-2 cities and beyond. The company also said that the biggest hit for the sale season was the mobile segment. According to the company the total number of mobile phones doubled compared to last year's sale. “More than 20 models sold over 100K units each during TBBD’19, which is a first for any event,” said the company. 10 TVs were sold per second in the first hour of TBBD‘19. One in every 10 orders came from far flung cities. And Flipkart also managed to set a few records including a delivery to a village called Tezu in Arunachal Pradesh, 100 kms from Myanmar China border, in just 3 days. “Whether it is the uptake of the Hindi interface or the adoption of our affordability constructs, engagement constructs like gaming, consumers have engaged with brands they love like never before. It reportedly plans to account for 50% of all online phone sales in the month leading up to <keyword id="188" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Diwali">Diwali</keyword> in early November.</li></ul> India’s homegrown e-commerce giant is all prepared to defend its turf this festive season. Flipkart’s online retail platform, Flipkart Internet, has received an infusion of nearly $500 million (₹35 billion) from a holding company in Singapore ahead of its Big Billion Days (BBD) sale in the second week of October. When Walmart purchased a 77% stake in Flipkart for $16 billion earlier this year, it said that the deal would include an equity infusion of $2 billion. This $500 million investment seems to be the first tranche of that capital injection, which is aimed at boosting Flipkart’s many businesses in order to fend off inroads from <keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword> India and retain its market leadership in the e-commerce space. Amazon, meanwhile, has invested $2 billion in its Seller Services unit alone in 2017-18 and the current year so far. With regards to the upcoming festive season, Flipkart will use the cash infusion for a number of things. Offering deeper discounts for one, is a huge priority. Flipkart will focus on discounts for sales of mobile phones, a category it currently dominates. With the launch of 20 new models and a buyback guarantee scheme, it reportedly plans to account for 50% of all online phone sales in the month leading up to Diwali in early November. In addition, Flipkart will likely allocate a portion of the investment to logistics operations to ensure quicker delivery of goods. It is also planning a big push for the in-house labels on its retail platform like electronics brand SmartBuy and furniture label Perfect Homes. With roughly $1.5 billion worth of sales from its five-day long BBD programme in 2017, Flipkart was able to beat Amazon. However, the feat might be tougher to pull off this year. Amazon India is coming in guns ablaze. It just opened <a href="https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/news/amazon-opens-largest-fulfilment-centre-in-karnataka/article24980103.ece">a huge order fulfillment centre </a>in the state of Karnataka, its largest in the country, and held a national conference for its sellers this week in preparation for its Great Indian Sale. It recently launched <a href="https://www.livemint.com/Companies/j1WDvhVsx239I654qD1ssM/Amazon-India-unveils-Hindi-website-app-to-take-on-Flipkart.html">a Hindi version </a>of its retail platform to effectively target Tier III towns and villages and has also <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/sme-sector/early-festival-for-amazon-sellers-as-fees-and-storage-charges-cut/articleshow/65836402.cms">cut seller fees</a> in a number of product categories such as clothing and electronics.

Flipkart has a $500 million war chest for this holiday season

<keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> on Wednesday said that it delivered 1 crore shipments in the first five days of its <keyword id="2546729" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Big-Billion-Day-sale">Big Billion Day sale</keyword> which is a massive 10 times growth compared to the last BBD when only 10 lakh deliveries were made by the ecommerce marketplace in the same period. The platform witnessed 110 orders placements per second and the momentum was across mobiles, fashion, electronics, BGMH (books, general merchandise and home) and home furnishing categories. In a cheer for MSMEs, over 66.6 crore visits were recorded during the Big Billion Days, with over 52 per cent of these visits coming from tier III cities and beyond. Out of 1 crore deliveries, more than 3.5 million deliveries were done through Kirana partners in the first five days of TBBD, the company announced. "The revival in demand and resurgence of consumption is expected to remain even after TBBD, as we continue to uplift the entire ecosystem," said Nandita Sinha, Vice President - Customer Growth &amp; Engagement, Flipkart. This year, the Flipkart BBD saw 1.5 times the number of transacting sellers compared to last year, among whom, more than 35 per cent witnessed 3 times more sales in comparison to last year. The number of crorepati sellers went up 1.5 times and the number of lakhpati sellers saw a 1.7 times jump. In the mobile category, the platform recorded two times growth in customers. The premium segment of smartphones saw a growth of 3.2 times, predominantly driven by Apple, Google and Samsung phones. The tier III customers drove the sale of large appliances with nearly 50 per cent demand coming from the region for this category, the company said.

The direct jobs will be across supply chain -- delivery executives, pickers, packers and sorters -- while there will be additional indirect jobs at Flipkart's seller partner locations and kiranas, the company said in a statement. "We are focused on creating impactful partnerships that offer great consumer experience while creating additional opportunities for progress of the entire ecosystem as it scales for the Big Billion Days (BBD)," said Amitesh Jha, Senior Vice-President, Ekart and Marketplace, Flipkart. Filpkart said that onboarding of more than 50,000 kiranas for the last-mile delivery will also create thousands of seasonal jobs to deliver millions of packages. "By generating employment and enabling our sellers to scale their businesses during this time, we're doing our part to drive growth in the industry and the economy," Jha said. Flipkart is undertaking training programmes for its direct hires in various aspects of the supply chain through a mix of classroom and digital training, enhancing their understanding of supply chain management. The company said it is now enabling customers to get their GSTIN on their invoices, thereby allowing them to claim input tax credit on their purchases. "The capability to allow GSTIN on their invoices will help millions of business entities - to claim input tax credit on their business related purchases, saving up to 28 per cent on their purchases," the ecommerce leader said.

Its sales for the period also grew by 160% as compared to last year. Counterpoint ranked realme as the seventh largest smartphone seller for the third quarter. But the company claims that it sold over 10 million phones during the quarter and is amongst the top 4 smartphone brands in India. “Our 5.2 million smartphone sales figure is an actual and credible sell-out data which is different from the usual sell-in numbers, which other brands have been promoting,” said Madhav Sheth, CEO, realme India. This growth in sales could be an effect of the deep discounts that it offered. During the Flipkart Big Billion Day sale, the company said that it will make way for discounts worth ₹300 crore. realme 5 phone with a quad camera was sold out within 30 minutes of opening its flash sale on Flipkart in August. It sold a whopping 120,000 units. realme is over a year old in India, and launched over 12 products – realme 1, realme 2, realme 3, realme 2 Pro, realme 3 Pro, realme U1, realme C1, realme C2, realme 3i, realme X, realme 5 and realme 5 pro.

The Geneva-based firm also announced that it will work with London's Winch Design to create the A380 private jet's opulent interior. While Sparfell did confirm that the A380s it has been tasked with selling are used, they declined to disclose the source for these aircraft.<a href="https://www.flightglobal.com/news/articles/ebace-four-used-a380s-offered-to-head-of-state-mark-437442/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">According to Flight Global</a>, Sparfell 's superjumbos are believed to be the four early-build A380s coming off lease from Singapore Airlines. An ad placed by the Geneva-based company on <a href="https://www.avbuyer.com/aircraft/private-jets/airbus/A380/350143" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Avbuyer.com</a> indicates the planes the were built in 2007-2008 with Rolls-Royce engines and seating arranged in a <a href="http://www.airfleets.net/ficheapp/plane-a380-3.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">configuration in line with that of Singapore Airlines</a>. However, a company representative did tell Business Insider that the converted A380s will cost less than a comparable new Ultra VIP transport. The announcement represents the beginning of a new phase in life for the iconic, but slow-selling aircraft. In fact, with the earliest production A380s expected to enter the second-hand market over the next few years, the ultra-lux executive jet market may be a viable channel for these planes. Until now, most industry observers have looked towards high-density, low-cost, long-haul carriers or bargain-hunting mainline carriers as potential second-hand customers.Winch DesignThe A380 as a VIP transport is not a new idea. Unfortunately, for Airbus, there have been few willing to take on the world's largest airliner as a private jet. <ul><li>Birla family patriarch B K Birla passes away on July 3 due to age-related ailments, at the age of 98. </li><li>A 13-year old BK was chided by an uncle about earning pocket money, and that led him to invest in shares.</li><li>B K Birla’s funeral will be held on Thursday in Kolkata, as per his last wishes.</li><li>He wrote in his autobiography, Swanta: Sukhaya that he was taught accounting by his family. </li></ul>Decades before <keyword id="6354955" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kumar-Mangalam-Birla">Kumar Mangalam Birla</keyword>, the chairman of the Aditya Birla Group purchased American metal company Novelis, yet another Birla had set the stage to the group’s global dreams. That was his grandfather B K Birla, who passed away yesterday at the age of 98.

 BK Babu as he was lovingly called, is known to have fought and won many internal battles to take the group started by his great-grandfather to new heights. The first was taking manufacturing to Ethiopia, and its most illustrious one was to convince his father, G D Birla to enter the tea plantation business.

 This legacy came to an end on July 3 due to age-related ailments. The man who knew ‘hisab-kitab’ However, BK Babu was as industrious as he was full of fire and risks. And, he started young. A 13-year old BK was chided by an uncle about earning pocket money, and that led him to invest in shares. Within a year, he made Rs 4,000 profit. Needless to say, this budding genius was inducted into the family business, the very next year, kick starting his illustrious journey. Though he missed college, his family taught him the basics of business which is ‘hisab kitab’ or accounting. He wrote in his autobiography, Swanta: Sukhaya (For my Happiness Only) that he was put through a one-year programme learning accounting, keeping books and understanding bank statements. So deft was BK at this, that his employees could never ‘pad’ books, as he would catch any fudged number, immediately! He is known to go through his books in the middle of the month, a life-long discipline that he adhered to. Keeping his books clean, was one thing that ensured that there no big trouble at his companies. Love for photography BK was not all about business, though he attended office well into his 80s, on the fifteenth floor of Birla Building at BBD Bagh in Kolkata ---as he continued to remain the chairman of many companies in the group’s pulp to cement businesses. 
	
He was an avid photographer who carried on his passion well into his sixties. He is also a patron of arts and he and his wife Sarla helped set up the Birla Academy and an auditorium Kalamandir, a legacy which will remain long after he is gone. He is survived by his daughters and a grandson. His son, the father of Kumar Mangalam Birla, Aditya Vikram Birla, passed away in 1995. B K Birla’s funeral will be held on Thursday in Kolkata, as per his last wishes.
