Subramanian who is using the NGO as a corporate façade to file frivolous litigation. </li></ul>Indian billionaire and founder of IT giant <keyword id="10862" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Wipro">Wipro</keyword>, <keyword id="6419840" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Azim-Premji">Azim Premji</keyword>, and his wife are facing allegations of financial fraud alongside two others. But, the Supreme Court has put a stay on the criminal proceedings against him and declared that Premji won’t have to physically appear in court on December 19. This comes after the Karnataka High Court dismissed petitions against the summons issued to Premji and four others for alleged criminal breach of trust and illegal transfer of funds. The case was registered after the Chennai-based non-governmental organisation (NGO) India Awake for Transparency accused them of illegally transferring funds from 3 different companies to a new company. “The issue is limited to amalgamation, your lords,” senior advocate AM Singhvi representing Azim Premji told the bench headed by SK Kaul. According to him, the allegations made in the complaints, even if they are taken at their face value and accepted in their entirety, do not prima facie constitute any offences or make out a case. Allegations of financial fraud against Azim Premji Premji, the IT czar of India, is generally lauded for being the man <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/azim-premji-gives-more-the-charity-than-his-net-worth/articleshow/71306177.cms">who gave away half of his net worth to charity. </a> However, India Awake for Transparency accused Premji of siphoning away ₹13,602 crores from three shadow banks — Napean Trading &amp; Investment Company, Vidya Investment &amp; Trading Company, and Regal Investments &amp; Trading Company — in the form of gifts between 2010 and 2012. The three companies were eventually merged into a fourth privately-owned trust called Hasham Investment and Trading Company. This gave the accused control over the remaining assets of the company worth ₹31,342 crore and it’s been losing money ever since. According to the plea, filed by a businessman in Bangalore, these actions violate several sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Prevention of Corruption Act. In the west, it may mean giving away a portion of your earnings, or parting with your fortune for a cause you believe in. Like establishing <keyword id="57946" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ford-Foundation">Ford Foundation</keyword>, or like Bill and <keyword id="131379" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Melinda-Gates">Melinda Gates</keyword> Foundation. But in India, the word strikes a different chord. 
 
Because a country that has had feudal followed by socialist-leaning measures to hold forth the pillar of democracy in the past few decades, philanthropy was restricted to money alone. It was about feeding the poor, irrespective of caste and even within the confines of caste that existed. 
 
A double-edged sword hung heavy and strong there. Today, after having brought in some heavy changes in the social thread of the society, philanthropy has also come to be known as a gesture of sharing your earnings with the poor. 
 No prizes for guessing who tops the list. The man has been a silent doer and a game changer in the Indian IT industry. Staying afar from the limelight of the media, <keyword id="6419840" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Azim-Premji">Azim Premji</keyword> is a man who has his heart set in the right place. 
 Premji has not only been ‘giving away’ to causes, he has also been working with governments addressing capacity building issues within the education system at grassroots level. Call it Corporate Social Responsibility or the act of giving back to the society, or sharing the fortune with those less fortunate – it all wraps in the same term. That would be philanthropy. Indians may never give like the Dutch or Americans who have formed a habit of setting aside a bit of their salary, no matter how big or small the family is or the job is. You may never see a poor man give money in India. But you will certainly see acts of kindness where establishments take care of street urchins feeding them nutritious meals or provide them with blankets when they sleep on pavements. 
 
Life is cheap in India, and livelihood is costlier. Space constraints may always stand before people to create structures that can shelter all the homeless or provide food for all the hungry and educate all the illiterates. This would be some kind of a gesture where temples open doors to everyone providing them with basic meals. There are even religious institutions which offer food round the clock for those who come at their doorstep. 
 
In smaller towns, there are communities and heads of those groups who will donate land, or money generously to build a temple or a school without making a hue or cry about having lost out on economic benefits. 
 
Companies on the other hand, do make a big deal about Corporate Social Responsibility. There are some companies that would even make a publicity drive out of their CSR initiatives and tie it to their annual appraisal. All that glitters isn’t ever gold, don’t we know by now. 
 
When you consider the top ten philanthropists in India, they are never the names who are seen constantly in the media talking about their ‘giving’ attitude or even bragging how much they are associated with causes. They simply give and continue to do so, come rain or sunshine. 
The Tatas, The Mazumdars, Nadars and Mittals are those forces that have their head firmly on their shoulders while the rest of India wonder about their next corporate move that would create more wealth for the country. 
 
When one considers the charity giving percentage in India among other nations, a study revealed India gave much more than the other ‘developing’ countries. It was on the forefront in that category. But when it came to developed nations, India was exactly where it was expected—much below the list. The perennial question is: whether India will ever be able to give as much as US and UK? Only time will tell.

It's also a signal that Anaplan is heading in the right direction after a prolonged transition from its last CEO to Calderoni.Anaplan has now raised a total of $300 million. Its latest funding round, like previous rounds, was led by Premji Invest, the investment fund of Indian billionaire Azim Premji, founder of Indian outsourcing company WiPo. Previous investors Salesforce Ventures and Top Tier Capital also participated in the round.Anaplan was a venture capital darling in the heady days of 2015 and early 2016. When it raised its last round, it became a unicorn, the name for startups worth $1 billion or more.But when the tide shifted in early 2016 from free-flowing investment money to tighter funding rounds, lower valuations, and austerity, Anaplan's CEO, Frederic Laluyaux, a former SAP executive, was out. His departure in April 2016 was a mutual decision with the company, <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/business-software-maker-anaplans-ceo-steps-down-1461760716">according to the </a><a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/business-software-maker-anaplans-ceo-steps-down-1461760716">Wall Street Journal</a>.Anaplan said at the time it wanted a new CEO who would help it grow. It didn't find what it was looking for until it hired Calderoni in January, poaching him from Red Hat.<h2>Running Anaplan is a job Calderoni's been well-groomed to do</h2>Calderoni is a well-known, long-time industry executive. He spent 11 years as Cisco's chief financial officer before serving a stint as Red Hat's CFO and executive vice president of operations.During his time as a CFO, Calderoni depended on the kind of financial modeling tools that Anaplan makes. But his favorite moment as CEO happened a few months ago when a US customer invited him to observe a financial presentation.The customer's financial team had signed up for Anaplan. In seven weeks, the team had built financial planning models for seven areas of its business and was presenting them to the company's CEO and CFO.While Calderoni was there, members of the customer's financial team approached him. Anaplan wasn't just changing how they built forecasting models or saving them money, the team members told him. It was saving them time. "The finance [organization] works long hours," Calderoni said in an interview with Business Insider. These people were thanking him for "freeing up so much time to spend more time with their families."Calderoni left the meeting feeling like his startup wasn't just delivering a product, it was changing lives. He felt happy with his choice to leave his high-profile job at Red Hat.But Calderoni's favorite thing about being CEO is being able to help shape Anaplan's culture. He's been involved in initiatives ranging from moves to attract and keep more women to choosing which charities to support. He's also been involved in fun stuff like a organizing employee outings to San Francisco's AT&amp;T Park to watch Giants baseball games and hang out with the players.Anaplan has just over 800 employees and just over 800 customers worldwide. Its revenues are in the "couple hundred millions," Calderoni said. Meanwhile, the company is delivering the growth the board wanted him to spur; Anaplan is gaining about 70 new customers a quarter, he said.Calderoni plans to eventually lead the company to an initial public offering. With an annual contribution of ₹1,161 crore in fiscal 2022, Shiv Nadar has displaced Wipro’s Azim Premji as the most generous Indian, according to the EdelGive <keyword id="3606268" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hurun-india-philanthropy-list" source="Orion">Hurun India Philanthropy List</keyword> 2022. The top 10 list cumulatively donated ₹3,378 crore in FY22, as against a combined donation of ₹12,785 crore last year. The good news is that the list has seen 19 new additions, with total donations by these new entrants adding up to ₹832 crore. Also, six women have featured on the list this year. The youngest philanthropist on the list is 36-year-old Nikhil Kamath of Zerodha. Clearly, the young entrepreneurs are beginning their philanthropic journey early on unlike many others from corporate India. Nadar’s philanthropic efforts have mainly focussed on education. Overall, contributions towards philanthropy have fallen in FY22 because of the pandemic impact. Nadar’s donation too is down 8% in the fiscal year 2021-22, as per the list. Wipro’s Azim Premji slipped to the second spot with an annual donation of ₹484 crore as his contribution towards philanthropy has fallen by 95% year-on-year due to the exceptional share buy-back in 2021, says the report. Billionaire <keyword id="3820" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mukesh-ambani" source="Orion">Mukesh Ambani</keyword>, the chairman of Reliance Industries, is third on the list with contributions totalling ₹411 crore. Ambani’s contribution fell 29% compared to last year. Kumar Mangalam Birla was fourth on the list with a contribution of ₹242 crore. Couples Susmita &amp; Subroto Bagchi and Radha &amp; NS Parthasarathy from Mindtree’s management debuted on the list with a combined donation of ₹426 crore to the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and also entered the top 10 and were ranked fifth. Both Subroto and Parthasarathy are co-founders of Mindtree. With a donation of ₹190 crore, <keyword id="111343" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gautam-adani" source="Orion">Gautam Adani</keyword> &amp; family ranks seventh on the EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2022. Next in line is Anil Agarwal &amp; family of Vedanta whose contribution increased by 27% from last year to ₹165 crore. Nandan Nilekani and his wife Rohini Nilekani are ranked ninth and eleventh, respectively, in the list and are active philanthropists. Larsen &amp; Toubro’s group executive chairman AM Naik is ranked tenth with a donation of ₹142 crore in FY22. While many billionaires of the past have turned generous later in life, some new-age tech entrepreneurs are giving away much earlier. <keyword id="1430802" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nithin-kamath" source="Orion">Nithin Kamath</keyword> and Nikhil Kamath of Zerodha increased their donation by a whopping 300% to ₹100 crore during the year. At 36 years, Nikhil Kamath is the youngest philanthropist on the Hurun list. Another surprise entrant this year has been Rakesh Gangwal, the co-promoter of InterGlobe Aviation (company that owns Indigo Airlines). Gangwal debuted this year with a personal contribution of ₹100 crore to the School of Medical Sciences and Technology at IIT, Kanpur. “EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List aims at chronicling the Indian philanthropy landscape and so far the transformation is encouraging. For instance, over the last 5 years, (the) number of donors who have given more than ₹100 crore have grown from 2 to 15, and over ₹50 crore have grown from 5 to 20.
