New Delhi, Apr 18 () Walmart Inc, Walmart Foundation and Flipkart on Saturday said they are are supporting India's COVID-19 response by donating personal protective equipment (PPE) for healthcare workers and funds for organisations providing essential relief materials to farmers and small businesses. Walmart Inc and e-commerce major Flipkart will spend Rs 38.3 crore towards in-kind donations into India to help with the front-line response efforts, a statement said. "The companies will focus on providing PPE, such as N95 masks and medical gowns, for distribution by non-government organizations (NGOs) to public healthcare workers. "Walmart and Flipkart have already secured 300,000 N95 masks and 1 million medical gowns, and they will continue to leverage their global supply chains to source these critical necessities for medical workers...," it added. In addition, Walmart Foundation is donating a total of Rs 7.7 crore to Goonj and Srijan -- NGOs supporting vulnerable communities through the crisis. The funds will be used to support the procurement of essential relief materials, such as food, medicine and hygiene items, for distribution by the organisations to support farmers, rural communities, and the micro-businesses, the statement said. "Our customers and associates in India have been deeply impacted by COVID-19 and our hearts continue to be with them. In times like these, we all need to come together to support our communities and the efforts of healthcare workers, NGOs and government organisations," Walmart Executive Vice President and Chief Sustainability Officer, and President of Walmart Foundation Kathleen McLaughlin said. The statement noted that Walmart and Flipkart are making various efforts, including following enhanced hygiene practices across the supply chain and delivery network, insurance and health benefits for workers, contactless deliveries where possible and supporting cashless payments. "Our Flipkart teams are working around the clock to respond to the COVID-19 crisis with care and compassion...The emergency relief efforts we are announcing today underscore our commitment to continuing to work with the private and public sector in India to respond to this unprecedented challenge," Flipkart Group CEO Kalyan Krishnamurthy said. New Delhi, Apr 14 () Consumer electronics major Samsung India on Tuesday committed Rs 20 crore towards combating the COVID-19 pandemic. As part of its commitment, Samsung will donate Rs 15 crore to the PM-CARES Fund and Rs 5 crore to relief funds of state governments of Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, where it operates manufacturing units, the company said in a statement. Samsung is already providing support to the local administration and community in Noida by equipping hospitals with medical equipment required in the preventive drive against the pandemic along with infra-red thermometers, public addressal systems and air purifiers, it said. Samsung is also providing food packets to local communities in Noida on a daily basis. "In our continuous endeavour to support the fight against Covid-19, Samsung today pledged a contribution of Rs 20 crore to the Union and State governments in India. Samsung will be donating Rs 15 crore to the PM Cares Fund, and Rs 5 crore to the states of Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, to support the country's challenge against the pandemic," Samsung said. In addition, employees of the company across India are contributing a portion of their salaries. The company said it will match the employee contributions and donate the total amount to the PM-CARES Fund in the coming weeks. According to the latest report from the Union Health Ministry, the total number of COVID-19 cases has increased to 10,363, with the death toll at 339. Over the last few weeks, Samsung has also hastened deliveries of digital X-ray and digital ultrasound machines that it provides to government hospitals as part of its Samsung Smart Healthcare program. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday announced extension of the nationwide lockdown till May 3 in a bid to contain the spread of the coronavirus infection. <ul><li>India’s <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword> lockdown has been tough on millions of people who fall below the poverty line. </li><li>Pratik Kumar, an <keyword id="1458771" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Delhi-Alumni">IIT Delhi alumni</keyword>, who spent three decades of his career working for agencies like <keyword id="784029" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-United-Nations">the United Nations</keyword>, International NGO and India’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare couldn’t sit idle at home. </li></ul>It’s been more than 60 days since Pratik Kumar, a social activist, started going out every day to help those who have lost their jobs and are out of money and food because of the coronavirus. And, he plans to continue helping them but his funds are running out. India’s coronavirus lockdown has been tough on millions of people who fall below the poverty line. Kumar, an IIT Delhi alumni, who spent three decades of his career working for agencies like the United Nations, International NGO and India’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare couldn’t sit idle at home. “All the children, parents were in <keyword id="9360134" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="complete-economic-distress">complete economic distress</keyword>. They were not able to do anything. These very self-respecting people were completely stuck. They couldn’t go out to fetch water. If we do not give them anything they wouldn’t survive,” Kumar told Business Insider India. His NGO, Sashakt Foundation has gone through a range of trouble from tons of paperwork to procuring e-passes to travel during the complete lockdown. Now the three-year-old NGO is facing its biggest challenge of all — cash crunch. Getting food to those who need it He started using the network of Sashakt Foundation to provide cooked meals to families who desperately needed it. They started with 300 meals in a day in Noida, Uttar Pradesh. However, the demand was far greater than what they expected and they had to increase their capacity to 8,000 meals in a day from 11 kitchens across India in various cities like Bhuvneshwar Ranchi, Varanasi, Mirzapur, Delhi, Noida, and Ghaziabad. For Kumar, serving cooked meals wasn’t an option they could continue indefinitely. “Within seven to eight days, we started giving dry rations. They were able to cook. So we prepared a kit that had essentials including 5-kilograms of rice, 5-kilograms atta, spices, tea, salt etc,” Kumar said. Not just food, the NGO also distributed thousands of PPE kits to the Delhi and Haryana government. Facing a cash crunch to create more jobs In the beginning, a lot of people came to donate and volunteer for the NGO. Some organisations including hotel giant ITC foods, Azim Premji Initiatives and Feeding India stepped up. “We received about ₹50 lakh donations from individuals and corporates but the funds have dried up, even corporate funds have dried,” Kumar told Business Insider. Kumar has plans to provide sustainable jobs to people in rural areas. Some of it includes providing feed money to a group of women who make cloth masks in small cities like Gaya or Mirzapur. To help these women Kumar’s Sashakt Foundation requires at least ₹30 lakh. They also plan to be a vendor on e-commerce sites for those small groups who use to sell jewellery in malls. However, all this won’t be possible if they run low on funds. “Noida’s authority asked us for 10,000 face shields but I don’t have that kind of money,” Kumar said while explaining how he had to ask favours from his connections to make things work. Kumar believes they can help create a market which sells quality products and at the same time create job opportunities for those affected by the coronavirus. TCS veteran and the current chief operating officer, Neemuchwala who has also been appointed as a board member will take over his new role on the same day.
