Bharti Airtel on Tuesday said its subsidiary has acquired an additional 6.3 per cent stake in Bangladesh's <keyword id="9373071" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="telecom-operator-robi-axiata">telecom operator Robi Axiata</keyword> from NTT Docomo for an undisclosed sum. This will raise the stake of Bharti International (Singapore) -- wholly-owned subsidiary of Bharti Airtel -- in Robi Axiata Limited to 31.3 per cent from 25 per cent at present, the company said in a BSE filing. "...Bharti International (Singapore) Pte Ltd (directly and through its affiliate entities)... has acquired additional 6.3 per cent stake in Robi Axiata Limited (an entity in Bangladesh) from NTT DOCOMO INC and its group entities, on June 09, 2020," it said. Acquisition of the ordinary shares of Robi from Docomo is done at mutually-agreed valuation. "The said valuation is non-material and is not disclosed herein due to reasons of confidentiality," it said. Robi is the second largest mobile network operator in Bangladesh. It is a subsidiary company of Axiata Investments (Labuan) Limited, which is an arm of Asian telecom giant, <keyword id="344041" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Axiata-Group">Axiata Group</keyword> Berhad, based in Malaysia. Bharti Airtel arm buys additional 6.3% stake in Robi Axiata from NTT Docomo

In a bid to raise fresh capital, telecom major <keyword id="6354924" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Idea-Cellular">Idea Cellular</keyword>, which is a part of the Aditya Birla Group, plans to sell its independent towers for Rs 7,580 crore. And the company is in talks with other telecos such as Malaysia based <keyword id="374980" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Axiata">Axiata</keyword>, American Tower Corporation and Bharti Infratel. 
	 
	According to a report by ET, top telecom service providers became debt laden following the spectrum auctions. Since then, they have been looking at ways to infuse fresh capital into the company. 
	 It should be noted that currently Idea has an overall debt of Rs 14,000 crore and had raised Rs 3,000 crore through qualified institutional placement process last year. Rival <keyword id="6354287" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharti-Airtel">Bharti Airtel</keyword>, too raised funds by divesting its African towers assets. 
	 
	Interestingly, Malaysia’s Axiata, which also has minority stake in the Idea, has been interested in buying the company’s independent tower arm for some years. According to a media report, the foreign company had also submitted a proposal to acquire these towers. 
	 
	Currently, Idea, the third largest service provider has nearly 11,000 towers in the country.

Sensex, Nifty50 edge lower in morning trade as PSU bank and IT stocks fall

Quarter one results for <keyword id="45442" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Reliance-Industries-Limited">Reliance Industries Limited</keyword> (RIL) was widely awaited for clarity on the commercial launch of <keyword id="6354504" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reliance-Jio">Reliance Jio</keyword> 4G services. But the company says the test program will take months to upgrade into commercial operations. Which means it is going to be more waiting for the official launch of <keyword id="2003276" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jio">Jio</keyword>’s 4G services. 
 Subsidiary of <keyword id="3820" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Mukesh-Ambani">Mukesh Ambani</keyword> led RIL, Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd (RJIL) claims that the company now has over 1.5 million test users on its network since their soft launch in December last year. The average monthly consumption per user is in excess of 26 GB and is increasing rapidly. Average voice usage per month is over 355 minutes. 
 
There have been many reports on the launch of Jio's 4G services, latest one saying that Jio will be launching with its Freedom plan on the 15th of August; with free voice services and date priced at Rs. 80 for 1GB 4G data. 
 
Looks like the focus for RJIL is not just launching their 4G services but the company is looking at creating a complete digital services business in order to offer end-to-end solutions in key domains such as education, healthcare, security, communication, financial services, government-citizen interfaces and entertainment. 
 
With a quest to push digital content and their data services, the company is going big on "visuality" by looking at replacing voice with video as the new communication medium with a hope to create “one of the most comprehensive and powerful Video networks in the world.” The company has a communication app, Jio chat that provides video calling along with other services like voice calling, chat, conferencing etc. 
 
RJIL has also joined global telecom operators like China Unicom, China Mobile, China Telecom, Singtel, T-Mobile US, Telefonica and Axiata Group for an initiative for a universal Rich Communications Services (RCS) profile worldwide. This initiative will provide a common universal profile which will enable these mobile operators to deploy an interoperable RCS implementation with a core feature set and configuration. 
 
Over the years the company has been able to build a robust telecom infrastructure by participating in spectrum auctions and partnering with other telecom operators for spectrum and tower sharing. RJIL is the first telecom operator to hold pan India Unified License. It has total liberalised spectrum holdings of 846.10 MHz in various frequency bands including spectrum acquired from Reliance Communications Limited in 13 circles. The company can use all the available liberalised spectrum for rolling out services across all technology, 2G/3G/4G . In addition, RJIL has entered into agreement with RCOM for sharing of spectrum in the 800 MHz band across 21 circles. Only RJIL is using sub-GHz spectrum band for LTE services in the country today. Sub-GHz spectrum is the most trusted frequency for LTE services globally; with the help of 800zmhz spectrum the company deploy 4G services with lesser investment in infrastructure.

Reliance Jio 4G services launch, still few months away

<ul><li><keyword id="849911" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sinhalese-Buddhists">Sinhalese Buddhists</keyword> and Muslims clashed in the districts of <keyword id="192421" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kandy">Kandy</keyword> and Ampara.</li><li>A state of <keyword id="38387" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="emergency">emergency</keyword> was declared in <keyword id="6355572" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sri-Lanka">Sri Lanka</keyword> on March 6th. </li><li>The situation has since stabilised. The government has blocked access to social media and messaging platforms in the affected regions.</li></ul>On March 6th, the Sri Lankan government declared an emergency for the first time since 2011.  Sri Lanka is no stranger to <keyword id="6378337" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Communal-violence">communal violence</keyword>. For decades it endured a civil war with Tamil separatist groups, which concluded in 2009 after the Sri Lankan military seized the last few strongholds belonging to the Tamil Tigers and killed its leader. Then, in 2014, the southwestern region of the island nation was besieged by ethnic riots as Sinhalese Buddhists vandalised Muslim shops and homes. Since coming to power in early 2015, the coalition government of President Maithripala Sirisena has done a poor job of quelling communal dissent and clipping the wings of organisations like the Bodu Bala Sena (BBS), a Sinhalese extremist group. The most recent clashes follow a strong performance by the party of former Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapaksa in local elections. A number of hardline Sinhalese outfits like the BBS are known to support Rajapaksa. Timeline: Feb 22nd According to local media reports, M.G. Kumarasinghe, a 41-year old Sinhalese truck driver, was attacked by a group of Muslim men in Teldeniya, a town in Kandy, over a road dispute. Mr Kumarasinghe refused or was unable to yield the right-of-way to the men, who were travelling in auto-rickshaws. A fight ensued in which Kumarasinghe sustained a number of serious injuries. He was subsequently admitted to the Kandy’s Teaching Hospital the same day. Four men were reportedly arrested by the police for the assault. Feb 27th A group of Sinhalese men, who were said to be intoxicated, raided a Muslim-owned restaurant in Ampara, claiming that the establishment laced its food with ‘vandapethi’, a chemical that is believed to result in impotence. The anger of the men stemmed from the belief that Muslims have a clandestine agenda to become the majority group in the Sri Lanka. A cashier at the restaurant was forced to admit that the food was adulterated. The raid was followed by riots, in which a number of shops and a mosque were vandalised. March 4th In response to Kumarasinghe’s death, a Sinhalese mob attacked and looted Muslim establishments, residences and mosques in Teldeniya. A number of Sinhalese men also shut down their shops to protest the police’s supposed lack of action against Mr Kumarasinghe’s killers. Night: Two Buddhist extremist clerics, Ampitiye Sumana and Amith Weerasinghe, were reported to be seen inciting riots in the area. March 5th Morning: The Sri Lankan government sent hundreds of officers, including the Special Task Force and military personnel, to Teldeniya and neighbouring towns in the district.  The mob violence continued in Kandy as dozens of Muslim shops and houses were attacked. All government schools in the region were ordered shut until further notice.
