<ul class="summary-list"><li>Tesla stock is down 7% since it reported third-quarter vehicle deliveries on Wednesday. </li><li>JPMorgan sees the stock drifting even lower, by as much as 48% to its $130 price target.</li></ul>JPMorgan raised its price target for Tesla stock — but the bank still sees shares of Elon Musk's electric carmaker falling almost 50% in the coming year. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/TSLA-stock">Tesla</a> stock is down 7% since it reported <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-q3-deliveries-preview-wall-street-expects-beat-mojo-returns-2024-9">third-quarter vehicle deliveries</a> on Wednesday, but JPMorgan thinks it can go much lower.In a Thursday note, the bank set its December 2025 Tesla stock price target to $130, representing potential downside of 48% from Wednesday's close.That target is a slight increase from the bank's prior target of $115 a share.According to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/jpm-stock">JPMorgan</a> analyst Ryan Brinkman, Tesla could be on the verge of not growing its full-year unit volumes for the first time ever."The continued softer trend now appears to position Tesla to potentially not grow full year unit volumes for the first time in its history, which we estimate could cause incrementally more investors to reconsider the company's growth stock multiple," Brinkman said.Year-to-date, Tesla has delivered 1.29 million vehicles. To exceed its 2023 vehicle delivery volumes of 1.81 million vehicles, the company would have to deliver more than 520,000 vehicles in the fourth quarter, which is more than what Wall Street analysts expect.Consensus estimates on Wall Street are tracking at about 500,000 vehicle deliveries in the fourth quarter, Wedbush analyst Dan Ives said.Meanwhile, the most vehicles Tesla has ever delivered in a quarter is 484,507, which occurred in the fourth quarter of 2023.Brinkman believes Tesla's potential inability to grow vehicle deliveries this year, which CEO Elon Musk has previously said should grow at an annual rate of 50% for the long term, could cause investors "to pay more attention to the growing gap between fundamentals and valuation."And even with its $130 price target, Brinkman believes that's a generous valuation for the automaker."Despite implying material downside risk, we feel our valuation analysis, nevertheless, generously values Tesla as the world's most valuable automaker, given it is suggestive of a ~$400 market capitalization vs. Toyota $290 bn despite considerably less earnings and cash flow and given the company's stalled automotive growth over the past two years makes it harder to embrace the hyper growth story," Brinkman concluded.Of course, while Brinkman has been a longtime Tesla bear, the bulls view it as less of a traditional automaker and more of a technology company.Tesla is set to host an event on October 10 to showcase its robotaxi plans. Meanwhile, Tesla bull Adam Jonas of Morgan Stanley has speculated that Tesla can grow its valuation by selling its own phone and even drones."Is it just me, or are you seeing more 'breadcrumbs' from Tesla's CEO that could potentially connect Tesla with aviation?" Jonas asked in a note earlier this week.This differing view among analysts — over whether Tesla is an automaker or a tech company — explains the widening gulf between price targets among the bears and the bulls. Jonas has a $310 price target for Tesla stock, more than double Brinkman's $130 target.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>More than 250 self-flying drones are operating at Ikea's 73 distribution centers.</li><li>Thanks to its partnership with Verity, Ikea has made progress with drones while its competitors lag.</li></ul>Three years ago, a drone took flight at an <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ikea-first-time-visit-most-surprising-things-2023-12">Ikea</a> warehouse in Switzerland for the first time.More than 250 drones now operate across 73 Ikea distribution centers in nine countries. They take stock of inventory and capture images of missing or misplaced items for detailed inventory reports — and they can do it all in completely dark warehouses.For the past few decades, investors and large retailers like Amazon and Walmart have been interested in drone technology. Companies in the future-air-mobility industry — including firms that sell technology like surveillance and delivery drones and electric aircraft — have raised $22.4 billion from investors since 2004, according to a report published by the consulting firm McKinsey &amp; Company.But the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/drone-delivery">drone hype cycle</a> has recently cooled. McKinsey data found that total funding for the sector dropped in 2023, largely because retailers struggled with using drones to reliably and affordably deliver packages to people's homes.Meanwhile, Ikea's largest franchisee, Ingka Group, has stood out for its steady progress in drone deployment.Ikea's narrower application of the technology has focused on the company's internal supply chain, avoiding aviation regulations and production-related expenses that have ensnared its competitors over the years.<h2 id="39c9cd7f-c996-492d-b54e-c0f4b289f4ea">Ikea's strategic partnership with the drone startup Verity has been key</h2>In 2021, Ikea partnered with Verity, a Swiss startup founded a decade ago that makes self-flying drones that scan inventory in large warehouses.Verity's other clients include the Danish shipping and logistics company Maersk and the tech giant Samsung Group, though the Dutch-based home-furnishings retailer Ikea was its first customer."We wouldn't be here, where we are today, without their commitment to seeing this being an actual, working product," Raffaello D'Andrea, Verity's CEO and founder, told Business Insider.Earlier iterations of Verity's drones weren't as accurate as they needed to be and could be too large for the needs of a warehouse. By working with Ikea, Verity advanced its technology and built drones that can more easily avoid other objects and perform warehouse inventory checks for out-of-stock items. The fleet of drones performs its tasks autonomously, meaning they can scan inventory and capture data without human control. They're more self-sufficient, too: For every 10 minutes that a Verity drone is in flight, it charges for 20 minutes.They fly around gathering data throughout warehouses, performing standard inventory checks, and verifying if an item has moved locations, is misplaced on another shelf, or is completely missing from the company's inventory.To do this, the drones are synched with Ikea's warehouse-management system, which contains data about the 5,000 to 8,000 SKUs, or stock-keeping units, on average in each location. Since items are constantly being moved around — from one place to another on the floor or out the door with customers — there's a chance that the system may not pick up on where every single item is located or how many items are in stock.Verity's drones can double-check the system by scanning the barcodes on pallets stored in the warehouse and then comparing that data to what's in its warehouse-management system. If the data doesn't align, Ikea floor managers are informed via the drones' cloud-based software. This helps minimize the number of in-stock checks that Ikea's human workforce must complete, especially on higher shelves that may require extra work to reach.Ikea's investments in Verity's drone technology fit into its broader strategy to explore and test newer supply-chain technologies. Ingka Investments, the investment division of Ingka Group, bought the supply-chain software provider Made4net last year to help Ikea grow online sales. In June, Ikea also joined investors, including Uber and Nvidia, in a $200 million funding round for the autonomous trucking startup Waabi.<h2 id="3644f3f4-51ed-408a-bcd9-8344a6eb15cc">Drone makers evolve through trial and error</h2>Over the past few years, Ikea has added more drones to the company's operations, even as retail and restaurant chains lag behind in their drone applications for delivering food and packaged goods.Nearly 11 years ago, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos made a splash when he told "60 Minutes" there could soon be delivery drones dropping off small packages from fulfillment centers within 30 minutes. But more than a decade and billions of dollars later, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazons-drone-delivery-joke-so-far-delivers-single-items2023-11">Amazon isn't close </a>to what Bezos envisioned for the drone industry.Similarly, in 2016, Domino's caught the industry's attention when it <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dominos-domicopter-youtube-video-2013-6">delivered the world's first pizza by drone</a> in New Zealand. The company tried to revive the technology in 2022, but there's been scant mention of it since.And earlier this year, Walmart and the drone delivery company DroneUp announced they would stop drone delivery in Arizona, Florida, and Utah to focus its service on the Dallas region. One big issue to sort out is cost: In August, DroneUp told Axios it cost the company about $30 to deliver one package by drone.But the industry has also been encouraged by a friendlier regulatory landscape, as the Federal Aviation Administration in July cleared some drone companies to deliver packages without visual observers for the first time. McKinsey estimates that 1 million commercial drone deliveries occurred globally last year, up from 875,000 in 2022. Investors poured $4.5 billion into drone startups in 2023, a 9% drop from what was raised the previous year, though the number of funding deals more than doubled.For years, D'Andrea has had a front seat to the hype cycle for <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/drone-delivery-services">drones and other autonomous robotics</a> that aim to reinvent supply chains. Before spearheading Verity, he was a cofounder of Kiva Systems, a robotics startup that was acquired in 2012 by Amazon for $775 million and later became known as Amazon Robotics.At the time, he thought that drone industry providers were really adept at making slick marketing videos that were "divorced from the technology required to achieve it." Billions of dollars were put into drones and other robotics that could move goods, but D'Andrea said he was unsure if those technologies could perform their tasks hundreds of thousands of times both reliably and safely.However, Verity hasn't proved as expensive to build as delivery drones, D'Andrea said. That could be because warehouse drones that scan inventory are easier to design and develop than those meant to pick up packages and deliver them."But it's still taken us a long time to be able to get to where we are," D'Andrea told BI.He said that investors have been receptive to Verity's pitch thus far. The startup announced a $43 million Series B last year, raising funds from investors including Qualcomm Ventures, A.P. Moller Holding, and Exor Ventures.<h2 id="0f88e887-d869-4f73-85b9-38021f2ffaf9">Ikea's cautious yet forward-looking supply-chain strategy</h2>Erik Jönsson, an Ikea fulfillment support manager, said reliability and safety remain the company's top priorities for its drone strategy.When drones are in flight, they buzz as close as 10 feet above Ikea employees, and they're never in the same space as customers.Because of this cautious approach, there haven't been any human injuries related to the drones, Jönsson said.Jönsson added that deploying drones has allowed employees to have more time for analyzing inventory data. Before using warehouse drones, workers would check thousands of pallets repeatedly in order to manage inventory. But with drones assisting, workers have more time to sort out order-related issues before they can affect customers.Ultimately, this approach is in line with Ikea executives' vision for a supply chain with fewer inventory errors, which they believe will lead to a better customer experience, said Jönsson.

Airbus had aimed to increase output from 50 to 75 a month by 2026, but the target has now been pushed back a year.The A320neo family has outsold the rival <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boeing-737-max-timeline-history-full-details-2019-9">Boeing 737 Max</a> since 2019, when the latter model was grounded following two crashes in which 346 people died.Further problems at Boeing arose in January, when a door plug came off an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/alaska-airlines-blowout-passenger-lost-shoes-and-socks-to-gaping-hole-2024-3">Alaska Airlines 737 Max</a> in midair.In the wake of that incident, Boeing's biggest customer, United Airlines, spoke of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/united-ryanair-execs-frustrated-at-boeing-plane-delivery-delays-2024-2">plans to switch some orders to Airbus jets</a>.However, Airbus has seemingly struggled to meet the increased demand.Overall, it marks further problems for airline customers, because Boeing has also reduced its output amid its ongoing crisis.The Federal Aviation Administration has <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boeing-737-max-plane-safety-faa-production-timeline-2024-6">capped production of 737 Max jets</a> as a result of the Alaska Airlines blowout. Boeing has also slowed production of other models as it works to focus on quality control — sparking a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lufthansa-ceo-calls-boeing-delivery-delays-extremely-annoying-2024-5">backlash from airline bosses</a>.In a press release, Airbus said its commercial aircraft division is "facing persistent specific supply chain issues mainly in engines, aerostructures, and cabin equipment.""We are facing headwinds right now; we have to bite the bullet," CEO Guillaume Faury told analysts on a call, per <a target="_blank" href="https://www.reuters.com/business/aerospace-defense/airbus-cuts-delivery-target-delays-production-goal-2024-06-24/">Reuters</a>.Reuters reported that Faury said engine supplies for the A320neo family had deteriorated "significantly" in recent months.One of the two engine options is made by <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/travel-disruption-likely-as-airbus-jets-undergo-engine-inspection-2023-7">Pratt &amp; Whitney</a>, which last year announced it had discovered a manufacturing defect that would result in hundreds of planes being grounded for inspections.According to Reuters, Faury also pointed to uncertainty around supplier <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boeing-supplier-spirit-aerosystems-scrutiny-over-alaska-blowout-quality-control-2024-1">Spirit Aerosystems</a>. It's expected to be carved up with parts sold to both Boeing and Airbus.Airbus' problems also extend to its space division, where it announced charges of 900 million euros ($965 million). Airbus may have benefited from Boeing's struggles, but it isn't smooth sailing for the rival aviation giant

By Quaid Najmi The tottering <keyword id="528556" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-aviation-sector" source="Orion">Indian aviation sector</keyword> hit fresh turbulence when early this month, another flourishing private airline was suddenly grounded owing to various problems, making it the 11th in a decade to �fall from the skies. Throwing their hands up, the <keyword id="11252024" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="go-first" source="Orion">Go First</keyword> budget airline's owners -- the Wadia Group -- filed voluntary insolvency resolution proceedings before the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) sending shockwaves through the entire <keyword id="34990" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="airline-industry" source="Orion">airline industry</keyword>. Go First was plagued by a peculiar problem -- the purported failure of the jet engine manufacturer, Pratt &amp; Whitney, USA, to supply engines/spares for its aircraft that grounded nearly 40 percent of the fleet for several months before it was compelled to totally suspend operations from the first week of May 2023. While the <keyword id="6354787" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="DGCA" source="Orion">DGCA</keyword> slapped a show-cause notice on the carrier for its abrupt actions that created havoc with thousands of flyers, Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia seemed sympathetic to Go First grappling with the engine problems. While assuring that the government was helping out as best as possible, Scindia also called upon Go First to make alternative travel arrangements for its flyers to avoid inconveniencing them. According to Go First the application under the IBC came after the "ever-increasing number of failing engines supplied by PW" which led to the grounding of around 25 of its 61-strong Airbus A-320neo aircraft, or almost 40 percent of its fleet by April 30, 2023. Go First said in a statement that the groundings due to faulty PW engines increased from 7 percent of its fleet in December 2019 to 31 percent in December 2020 and 50 percent in December 2022, and blamed PW for giving assurances but failing to meet them. In view of this, the beleagured carrier suffered a whopping loss of nearly Rs 10,800 crore and even demanded Rs 8000 crore as compensation from the PW which could help Go First to meet its financial commitments/obligations. Besides, Go First had also coughed up Rs 5,657 crore to its lessors in the past couple of years comprising Rs 1,600 crore as lease rent for the non-operational grounded aircraft. Go First was also hampered by the PW reportedly not honouring the March 2023 award of the Emergency Arbitrator in Singapore to immediately provide the airline with at least 10 serviceable spare leased engines by April 2023 and 10 more per month till December 2023 to enable the carrier to resume full operations, financial rehab and survival. An aviation official said that after the NCLT processes the Go First application, it could appoint an interim Resolution Professional to take over and re-start operations, adding that a similar exercise in 2019 with another grounded private carrier failed to take-off. Though Go First's promoters have pumped in around Rs 3,200 crore in the past three years, coming to a total investment of nearly Rs 6,500 crore, plus support from the government's emergency credit line guarantee, all this failed to help as the airline kept incurring 100 percent of its operational costs and with a total loss of Rs 10,800 crores, it �succumbed'. In the NCLT plea, the 17-year-old airline which operated over 32 flights to 29 domestic and 10 international destinations, has sought several interim directions including restraining the lessors from taking back their aircraft, any adverse action by the DGCA, suppliers of essential goods-services, etc. Since launching low key operations in November 2005 as �GoAir', Go First gradually climbed up to become the fifth largest private carrier, consistently profitable and expanding till the PW �engine troubles' started from December 2020, hitting its operations and forcing it to ground in May 2023. However, the owner-promoters have already made it clear that they are keen to revive and not sell the venture or even exit this sector, which has witnessed many ups and downs with the practical �demise' of another 10 airlines in the past 10 years - or average one per annum! The Go First imbroglio came at a crucial juncture for the country's aviation sector which was soaring to pre-Covid 19 levels after the harsh pandemic and the ongoing peak summer holidays - and its full impact on the industry remains to be seen. Go First Gone: 11th private airline to 'drop' out of skies in a decade

Finance</a>, the aviation expert pointed to the January 5 incident on an Alaska Airlines flight, during which <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/alaska-airlines-plane-door-plug-two-most-damaged-seats-empty-2024-1">the door blew out of the 737 Max 9 aircraft</a>. The plane landed safely and there were no fatalities, but the event sparked chaos in airline stocks and resulted in the grounding of all 737 Max 9 planes. Inspected Max 9 jets <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/faa-boeing-737-max-9s-resume-flying-alaska-incident-2024-1">have been given the </a>green light to resume flying, but safety concerns linger around Boeing's planes, which could potentially come at a huge price to airlines as they deal with delays of 737 aircraft already on order, Boyd said."They're going to be materially delayed. They're out of the program for the coming year. That's going to be a big hit for them because they don't have anything to replace those," Boyd said. "We're going to be looking at a very bumpy year because these airlines, a number of them, aren't going to have enough airplanes to put into the sky.Those flight disruptions could affect travel to a number of large cities like Chicago and Seattle, but are also likely to affect companies and suppliers looking to ship materials by air, he said. "The fallout from the Alaska incident...could have effects on not just Alaska and United, but on dozens of communities across the nation," Boyd wrote in a note published on January 8, pointing to the disruptive effects of the groundings and the redirecting of fleets to adjust. "What Boeing has done, which I think is totally incompetent with this, is going to hurt the entire economy," Boyd said in the interview. Some of Boeing's largest customers, like United Airlines, will likely be looking for other aircraft manufacturers, Boyd predicted. United CEO Scott Kirby said this week that the door incident and subsequent grounding of Max 9 planes was the "straw that broke the camel's back." He said the airline is making plans for a future without the Max 10, which he said is years behind delivery schedule. <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/ba-stock">Boeing's stock</a>, meanwhile, is down 20% year-to-date."When you have this number of your customers ticked off, yeah, that's incompetent," Boyd said. "I'm not just really confident with some of the responses Calhoun has made, very honestly," he said, referring to Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun."We have let down our airline customers and are deeply sorry for the significant disruption to them, their employees and their passengers," Boeing Commercial Airlines CEO Stan Deal said in an emailed statement. He added that the company has built a "comprehensive plan" to resume flying its aircraft safely. It's not the first time Boeing's 737 Max fleet has had issues. Meanwhile, consumer spending ramped up by 0.7% as Americans capped the holiday season by splurging an extra $133.9 billion in personal expenditures in December.
