<ul class="summary-list"><li>Grimes dreamed of becoming a Supreme Court justice, and never thought she'd land in <keyword id="12018329" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="aviation" source="Orion">aviation</keyword>. </li><li>After 'stumbling into aviation,' she now helps shape government policy for the industry. </li></ul>While most kids grow up idolizing pop stars and movie stars, as a child growing up in a small town in southern Virginia, Sierra Grimes looked up to Thurgood Marshall. "I was just like, 'Oh, my goodness, this man is the holy grail. And guess what? This third grade girl, I'm going to be him. I'm gonna be the first Black female Supreme Court justice,'" Grimes told Insider. "So, I thought I was Ketanji Brown before there was a Ketanji Brown."She followed in Marshall's footsteps, attending Howard University in Washington, DC, in 2006 to study political science. But during a college internship with Congresswoman Jo Ann Davis, she realized she didn't want to go to law school. A call with a recruiting agency in 2012 led her to an interview with the National <keyword id="14052810" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="business-aviation" source="Orion">Business Aviation</keyword> Association, at a time when she wasn't sure what "business aviation" meant (the term generally means the use of an <keyword id="11894926" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="airplane" source="Orion">airplane</keyword> for business purposes, such as moving equipment or getting to a meeting)."The night before, I'm looking up 'What the heck is business aviation?' because when I think aviation at that time, all I knew was getting on a commercial flight to go on vacation with family," Grimes said. Despite her lack of aviation expertise, Grimes landed a job as a registration assistant for <keyword id="14340509" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="nbaa" source="Orion">NBAA</keyword>, the leading trade group representing roughly 11,000 companies that rely on aviation to make their businesses run. After climbing the ranks, she was named senior manager of government affairs for NBAA in March 2021. "I'm one of those people that truly stumbled into aviation, and have caught the bug and loved it and plan to stay as long as I can," Grimes told Insider. <h2>Fostering the future of business aviation </h2>The NBAA was founded in 1947 with the mission to foster growth of business aviation. As senior manager of government affairs, Grimes handles policy work, looking to help pass legislation to enhance the business aviation industry. In 2014, just two years into her tenure at NBAA, Grimes helped found its Young Professionals in Business Aviation, or YoPro, program, which helps to recruit and retain the next generation of professionals coming into business aviation. The program started off with networking and providing young people with professional development opportunities, and now includes an advocacy leg meant to foster the importance of advocating for NBAA's mission on the Hill. "I've been able to be seen as a thought leader for the next generation and for workforce development, and for diversity, equity, and inclusion, not only in the sense of being a young, Black female working in an industry that's male dominated, but also just coming from different backgrounds and not having the traditional aviation background," Grimes said. <h2>Ushering in change for aviation </h2>Grimes' favorite part of the job is getting involved with innovation taking place in aviation, such as <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/top-startups-evtol-flying-car-industry-urban-air-mobility-2022-4">advanced air mobility</a>, she told Insider. NBAA is helping to get legislation passed and working with regulators to make sure everything is in place for the nascent industry.Though she's certainly faced obstacles in her career, she said she doesn't tend to look at them that way. "I'm really big on perspective. And so an obstacle to me doesn't really mean defeat or failure," she said. "I don't really see a lot of things as an obstacle." <h2>Aviation is 'begging and pleading' for diversity </h2>Looking to the future, Grimes said she plans to focus on honing her skills as a government affairs professional. "I think that switching over to the government affairs side has opened up a new pathway with so much room for growth," she said. For young people looking to carve out their own path in aviation, Grimes said now is the time."Whenever I'm talking to young people nowadays, specifically people of a diverse background, I tell them that this is the time to get into this industry. I would say that right now, this industry is literally begging and pleading for diversity," Grimes said. Her biggest piece of advice for landing a job in aviation: persistence. "You don't have to have the background, per se, in it. But, just go after it," Grimes said. "Be persistent. Have a goal and go after it."

That was — and still is — reserved for the Germans. Rather, it has always been defined as opulence of the highest order: scrumptious leathers, pillowy ride quality, cloud-like comfort. True, today's American-luxury landscape has shifted away from the languid, finned sedans of the 1950s. The market is more dominated by hulking SUVs. <div type="image" title="2020 Lincoln Aviator_9" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76964787" hostid="261"></div>But the idea of a road-going land yacht hasn't diminished in the slightest. Currently, not one American automaker is doing this better than Lincoln. If the $80,000 Navigator is Lincoln's flagship — an SUV that's massive, powerful, a force of the road — then the lineage to its smaller sibling, the $51,000 Aviator, is clear. <h2>The 2020 <keyword id="1587234" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Lincoln-Aviator">Lincoln Aviator</keyword>: Conservative styling, no alienation </h2>The Aviator is now in its second generation. The first generation was short lived, produced only from 2002 to 2005, before Lincoln brought the nameplate back for 2020. Both are three-row SUVs, which makes sense given Lincoln's modern, SUV-dominated lineup.<div type="image" title="2020 Lincoln Aviator_25" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76964788" hostid="261"></div>The Aviator is a step down in size and price from the Navigator, a step up in size and price from the $41,000, two-row Lincoln Nautilus, and classified as a midsize luxury SUV. The Aviator loaner that Lincoln dropped off for me was painted in a shade of Magnetic Gray Metallic and had Ebony-colored leather seats. It was in the Grand Touring AWD trim, which sits in between the $56,000 Reserve Aviator trim and the top-tier, $88,000 Black Label Grand Touring trim. But after thousands in optional features, this particular Aviator was alarmingly close to the latter in price. <div type="image" title="2020 Lincoln Aviator_7" height="3000" width="2000" msid="76964792" hostid="261"></div>The base price of the Aviator Grand Touring AWD comes to $68,800, but Lincoln included a $14,950 package called the "Equipment Group 302A," which consisted of the Luxury Package, a trailer tow package, the Dynamic Handling Package, and 21-inch premium painted aluminum wheels. After that, the total MSRP came out to $83,245.The Aviator wears the same studded grille as the rest of Lincoln's models — a relief from the <a href="https://www.autoweek.com/news/a1981446/lincoln-replace-waterfall-grille/">hated waterfall grille that dominated Lincoln's corporate fascia in the 2000s</a>. The rest of its styling, though handsome, is also remarkably inoffensive and actually quite conservative. <div type="image" title="Lincoln Aviator trims" height="640" width="1500" msid="76964795" hostid="261"></div>This isn't a bad thing, nor is it an uncommon one, as the midsize SUV market is highly lucrative right now and any sort of polarizing design would run the risk of alienating buyers. Hardly anyone would call the Aviator an eyesore, and that's half of the battle when SUVs are as popular as they are.But for me, personally? I would have liked a little more chutzpah in the styling. I spent 11 days with the car, and hours and upon hours photographing it and editing those photos. And without a picture of it sitting in front of me, I can't actually remember what the Aviator looks like.<div type="image" title="2020 Lincoln Aviator_13" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76964798" hostid="261"></div><h2>Details and safety ratings: A hulking presence with surprising speed</h2>Despite the Aviator's demure looks, you have to laugh when you read the spec sheet. Looking at it parked on the street, you wouldn't assume it's a battering ram on four wheels. But it is. If you get the Aviator in either of the Grand Touring trims, you'll also have a plug-in hybrid powertrain: An electric motor, on its own making a claimed 75 kilowatts, paired with a twin-turbocharged, 3.0-liter V6. Altogether, <a href="https://media.lincoln.com/content/lincolnmedia/lna/us/en/news/2019/08/20/2020-aviator-advance-performance-grand-touring.html">Lincoln claims</a> they produce an output of 494 horsepower and 630 pound-feet of torque (!).<div type="image" title="2020 Lincoln Aviator_11" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76964800" hostid="261"></div>The standard twin-turbocharged V6 on all of the other Aviator trims offers considerably less: a claimed 400 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of torque. Both engine options are hooked up to a 10-speed automatic transmission.The Aviator's plug-in hybrid system allows you to charge it with a wall outlet, or you can put it into Preserve EV mode, which charges the battery as you drive. <a href="https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a28694132/lincoln-aviator-plug-in-hybrid-more-horsepower/">Car and Driver</a> reported in August 2019 that the plug-in hybrid Aviator can achieve an all-electric driving range of about 18 miles. It's big — big to fit on large American highways, sweeping American avenues, and grand American boulevards. Overall length comes to 199.3 inches (16.6 feet), width comes to 79.6 inches (6.6 feet), and height is 69.6 inches (5.8 feet). In Grand Touring AWD trim, it weighs 5,673 pounds — roughly two <a href="https://automobiles.honda.com/civic-sedan/specs-features-trim-comparison">Honda Civics</a>. Cargo space behind the third row comes to 18.3 cubic feet and 41.8 cubic feet behind the second row. Comparatively, the Buick Enclave, another three-row SUV, has 23.6 cubic feet behind the third row and 58 cubic feet behind the second row.<div type="image" title="2020 Lincoln Aviator_64" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76964803" hostid="261"></div>The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration <a href="https://www.nhtsa.gov/vehicle/2020/LINCOLN/AVIATOR/SUV/4WD#safety-ratings-frontal">awarded the Aviator</a> an overall five-star rating, the highest it offers. The only category where the Aviator earned four stars was the rollover risk, which NHTSA found to be 15%.<h2>What stands out: Insulation from the outside world, combining grace with monstrous power</h2>The first thing you notice after climbing into the Aviator and shutting the door is how quiet it is inside. Think old, dusty-library quiet. <div type="image" title="2020 Lincoln Aviator_79" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76964805" hostid="261"></div>The doors close with a rich but muffled thump and then — nothing. You don't hear noise from the outside. Even when you're driving, you barely hear the engine or the road or the wind washing over the body. No outside disturbances, just you in your comfortable leather seat and the road ahead. All of the windows, I noticed, were double-pane. This was sound deadening an executive in a private office would be jealous of.Once moving, it was difficult not to think of the Aviator as a land yacht. But unlike boats, which tend to wobble on turbulent waters, it was always solidly planted and confident, even in the corners. Of course there was <a href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/body%20roll">body roll</a>, but it felt controlled — the natural roiling of mass of something so large.<div type="image" title="2020 Lincoln Aviator_41" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76964808" hostid="261"></div>Imperfections in the road virtually disappear when you're in an Aviator. The optional Adaptive Suspension system, which my loaner came with, uses 12 different sensors to monitor its own motion, body movement, steering, acceleration, and braking. Lincoln says the sensors can read the road 500 times per second and will adjust the settings up to 100 times per second.If you were about to drive into a pothole, for example, the sensor would pick up on it and stiffen up the shock absorber to cut down on the impact. The wheels respond independently of each other, too.<div type="image" title="2020 Lincoln Aviator_44" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76964809" hostid="261"></div>Lincoln did quite a job with noise, vibration, and harshness improvements here. Virtually everything from the outside is filtered out. And why shouldn't it be? Who would want to be reminded of the woes of crumbling American infrastructure while sitting in a Lincoln? I know I started this review by saying that American luxury doesn't concern itself with lap times. And I still stand by that. Nobody should be tracking an Aviator. But that doesn't mean the thing can't move. <div type="image" title="2020 Lincoln Aviator_17" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76964912" hostid="261"></div>Mash the throttle down and suddenly you're speeding for the horizon, the sheer force of almost cartoonish acceleration mingling with your own dumbstruck disbelief. With the Aviator's substantial girth, you wouldn't think it can move the way it will, drop down the gears as rapidly as it can, send you roaring ahead like it does. But too soon you'll learn your right foot is the key to flipping the switch between calm and docile to bullish, heavyweight power. Merging, passing, making an emergency maneuver — it really doesn't matter what you're trying to do. The fury will always be at your beck and call. And when you don't need it anymore, it retreats back within itself until it's summoned again. <div type="image" title="2020 Lincoln Aviator_23" height="3000" width="2000" msid="76964918" hostid="261"></div>Two personalities rule this Lincoln. It performs both of them equally well. The first is one that will deliver up a dreamy first-class commuter experience. You'll have your family sleeping soundly in the throne-like leather seats as you drive. You'll never be jostled by a bumpy road again.The second will fire the coiled and flexed muscles lurking just beneath the conservative skin. You'll be in command of a knockout punch that'll solve any problem that demands torque and horsepower.<div type="image" title="2020 Lincoln Aviator_31" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76964922" hostid="261"></div><h2>What falls short: Big car, light steering </h2>I have yet to find an electronically assisted power steering system that I actually like. The Aviator's did not impress me. Almost all modern cars use assisted steering — or power steering — a term here that means that the car has a system that cuts down on the effort required to turn the steering wheel, thus making it easier to steer. <div type="image" title="2020 Lincoln Aviator_51" height="3000" width="2000" msid="76964924" hostid="261"></div>There are three kinds of power steering: hydraulically assisted, electro-hydraulic, or electronically assisted. Electronically assisted power steering systems use an electric motor to help with the steering, rather than a hydraulic system. It's more computerized and therefore doesn't feel as analog, progressive, or acute as a hydraulic system. It's up to the automaker to calibrate the steering feel of an electronically assisted system. Most of them, like Lincoln, calibrate low-speed steering feel with far too little resistance to feel natural — they wind up feeling very artificial. <div type="image" title="2020 Lincoln Aviator_3" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76964927" hostid="261"></div>At higher speeds, the Lincoln's steering thankfully felt fine; it tightened up nicely and did a decent job of communicating the road beneath the tires to my fingers. But at lower speeds, like in parking lots or in stop-and-go traffic, it was much too light. Several times, I, misjudging the resistance of the wheel, jerked it too hard in one direction, overshot how much steering input was needed, and had to correct it.<div type="image" title="2020 Lincoln Aviator_76" height="3000" width="2000" msid="76964928" hostid="261"></div>Lincoln also included a center console for the middle row. This was filled with useful things, such as extra cup holders and cubbies, but it made climbing into the third row and stretching out your legs there difficult. If I were to option the Aviator for myself, I'd skip on the console. <h2>How the Aviator compares to competitors: Give it time to become a household name </h2><div type="image" title="2020 Lincoln Aviator_33" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76964932" hostid="261"></div>The Lincoln Aviator is a luxury SUV, which means there is no shortage of competition. Within the pool are the Acura MDX, Volvo XC90, Audi Q7, Mercedes-Benz GLE, BMW X7, and Buick Enclave. But the Aviator's interior attention to detail and quality, power, and hybrid capabilities make it tough to pass up. It's certainly more luxury-oriented than sport-oriented.The inside is certainly plusher than the Audi, BMW, Buick, Acura, and Volvo. And although it doesn't make as much power as the upcoming Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S, nearly 500 horsepower and 630 pound-feet of torque is still not something to turn up your nose at. <div type="image" title="2020 Lincoln Aviator_12" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76964937" hostid="261"></div>But Mercedes-Benz's influence on the luxury SUV market is undeniable. The Aviator only went on sale starting last summer and <a href="https://media.ford.com/content/dam/fordmedia/North%20America/US/2020/01/06/sales-4q2019.pdf">sold 6,424 examples in the last quarter of 2019</a>. Mercedes was selling that many GLEs almost every month during the same time period.Despite its excellent hardware, the Aviator's still a relatively new player in the game. It still needs time to become a household name. <div type="image" title="2020 Lincoln Aviator_38" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76964942" hostid="261"></div><h2>Our impressions: Just as great to ride in as it is to drive</h2>I sat in all six seats my Aviator loaner had to offer. Each one was comfortable, supportive, and offered my short frame good legroom, including in the third row. It only has two seats back there, but they aren't the hard, jumper-seats you sometimes find thrown into a car's third row as an afterthought and then forgotten about. They're certainly not as plush as the middle-row seats, however.All the same, I could tell that despite the Aviator being a three-row SUV, it's not really designed for passengers to sit back there regularly. With the second-row center console taking up the aisle, the only way to access the third row was to climb past the folded-down second-row seat. The Aviator's massive rear wheel arch, built to house the similarly giant 21-inch wheels, proved to be another obstacle to clamber over. <div type="image" title="2020 Lincoln Aviator_67" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76964948" hostid="261"></div>The best seats by far are the front and middle-row seats. Those are the ones that get priority. The captain's chair middle-row seats reclined, slid back and forth on rails, had armrests, and offered enough legroom fit for a king. Middle-row passengers also get their own infotainment and climate controls.With the third row folded down, the massive trunk swallowed up everything we brought on our week-and-a-half trip (our laundry hamper, too, because there was a free laundry machine to use where we were staying and we are cheap and lazy).<div type="image" title="2020 Lincoln Aviator_60" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76964951" hostid="261"></div>And rearward visibility was good — no unnaturally shaped D-pillars creating blind spots here. I've already gone on at length about how great the car drives, so my final thought here will be one of relief — relief that Lincoln finally had the sense to switch its lineup from tacky and confusing alphanumeric names — MKZ, MKX, MKT, MKC — to regular, identifiable names. <div type="image" title="2020 Lincoln Aviator_18" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76964954" hostid="261"></div>Ones that sound good, too. Aviator. Navigator. Continental. Nautilus. Corsair. These, undoubtedly, will make it easier for the public (and me) to tell them apart.Recognition is important. Committing to one singular idea — in this case, unquestionable luxury and quality — is key. Pair those with a car that has great hardware and is wonderful to drive? That, my friends, is how you build a brand.

XOJET Aviation, for example, is looking to increase its fleet by 50% and hire between 40 and 45 pilots for every 10 planes it adds. Transitioning out of the commercial airliners and into private aircraft is a great opportunity for a pilot to keep their wings and outfly the downturn. However, even the most eager applicant will need to contend with thousands of like-minded colleagues all with comparable levels of experience vying for the few available vacancies."I think the last I looked, we had something like 4,000 pilot resumes applying for XOJET Aviation," Kevin Thomas, XOJET Aviation's president and chief operating officer, told Business Insider in an interview. Business Insider spoke with three private aviation executives from XOJET, Jet Linx, and Flexjet and learned what they're looking for above all when hiring new pilots to fly their aircraft.<h2>Repositioning from the airlines to the private jet</h2><div type="image" title="US Navy Gulfstream C-37A" height="2135" width="2847" msid="79815325" hostid="261"></div>Whether it be flying passengers for an on-demand charter firm, powerful executives for a large corporation's flight department, or a wealthy family on their private jet, each job in private aviation has its challenges that most pilots never experience at the airlines. That's because being an airline pilot is an impersonal role where the flight crew is separated from passengers by a locked, bulletproof door and all the prep work for a flight is done by a support team.To land a job in private aviation, however, pilots will need to prove to their prospective employers that they can be active and engaging both in the cockpit and outside of it. Unlike in the airlines, private aircraft pilots are the main point of interaction for passengers since their flights largely operate without gate agents, customer service agents, or flight attendants to act as a buffer between the passenger and pilot. "Our pilots are extremely customer-oriented, being frontline representatives of our company from the minute we greet them outside the airplane until we say goodbye," Thomas told Business Insider.And that's more than just standing in front of the cockpit door after landing and thanking passengers for their business, especially when private aviation firms have a lot of repeat flyers with long memories. Every operation is different - with on-demand charter guests less repetitive than aircraft owners, for example - but the onus is on the pilots to leave a good impression as the sole in-field representatives of the company. Interviewers are also looking at personality to determine whether the pilot would be a good fit in the company since private aircraft firms are small and familial operations compared to the airlines. One bad apple, as the saying goes, could spoil the bunch. "Once you get into the interview process, there's a lot of things that you then start to measure that you can't see in total times," Jet Linx CEO Jamie Walker told Business Insider. "And that's the fit with our culture and our company and our core values and things like that."Flexjet, for example, has a membership program where owners are assigned a dedicated flight crew that flies them on nearly every flight. Pilots not only have to fly the plane but foster and maintain positive relationships with the owners to which they're assigned."We really do look for individuals who we feel would simultaneously have a servant heart to be great ambassadors for the organization because they're the people that our customers interact with very intimately," Flexjet CEO Michael Silvestro told Business Insider. <h2>Experience doesn't guarantee a job</h2><div type="image" title="Bombardier CSeries/Airbus A220 cockpit" height="2832" width="3776" msid="79815329" hostid="261"></div>The coronavirus pandemic has single-handedly ended the pilot shortage that saw firms struggle to find capable talent and the burden is now on pilots to impress firms, not the other way around. Boasting thousands of pilot hours and a long list of aircraft type ratings won't likely be enough to get hired at a private aviation firm, especially when the competition is likely equally or more qualified and also coming from an airline job. Complacency and falling behind on skills can also hurt when it comes time for the interview process. Most airline pilots will fly one aircraft for years but it's common in private aviation for pilots to jump between two types of aircraft."Just because you have 10,000 hours, doesn't mean you're as proficient as a 3,000-hour pilot," Walker said.Firms are looking to see whether the skills of the pilots they're hiring match their experience. It's a huge investment for them as nearly all new pilots will need to be trained on new aircraft, which can cost thousands, before they see their first passenger. Executives are entrusting their pilots with clients on a level that isn't experienced with airlines and proving that they'll be able to successfully navigate that transition will be crucial in the competitive hiring climate that the private aviation industry is now facing. "Being a pilot with a lot of flight time is not enough - we want good people," Thomas said.

In a letter sent on Sunday, AT&amp;T CEO John Stankey and Verizon CEO Hans Vestberg wrote that the companies intend to continue with their planned rollout of 5G on Wednesday, after already agreeing to a "costly" monthlong delay from its previously scheduled December launch date. "On the evening of New Year's Eve, just five days before the C-Band spectrum will be deployed, we received your letter asking us to take still more voluntary steps — to the detriment of our millions of consumer, business, and government customers — to once again assist the aviation industry and the FAA after failing to resolve issues in that costly 30-day delay period, which we never considered to be an initial one," the letter reads. The letter came in response to a memo sent by Buttigieg and Federal Aviation Administration Administrator Steve Dickson on Friday that detailed concerns surrounding 5G's potential for "widespread and unacceptable disruption" within the airline industry. The memo included a request to delay the rollout by an additional two weeks and for AT&amp;T and Verizon to commit to placing a buffer around select airports. A spokesperson for the Federal Aviation Administration told Insider on Sunday that the organization is "reviewing the latest letter from the wireless companies on how to mitigate interference from 5G C-Band transmissions.""U.S. aviation safety standards will guide our next actions," the spokesperson said in a statement. Stankey and Vestberg wrote in the letter AT&amp;T and Verizon Communications dedicated most of the past year to preparing for the implementation of 5G services, adding that they complied with various federal fees and requirements, including paying "tens of billions" to the US government and satellite services for widespread spectrum service. The executives added that their efforts also came after the US government had declared it was "lagging behind China" in 5G services, as well as following the auction of the C-Band spectrum in February that was the "culmination of years of study by the Federal Communications Commission." The executives further noted that 5G services already exist in 40 countries where it "has been deployed without any negative impact on aviation." "We care deeply about the safety of our customers, employees, and families, all of whom fly domestically and internationally for business and pleasure," the executives wrote in the letter. Telecommunications giants are planning the long-awaited rollout of 5G communications aimed at improving wireless connectivity in the US. But the plan is meeting strong pushback from the airlines, aircraft manufacturers, and aviation trade organizations that say 5G may adversely impact aviation safety. One key issue is how the deployment of 3.7-3.98 GHz 5G C-Band communications will affect radar altimeters on aircraft, also known as radio altimeters.The Radio Technical Commission for Aeronautics <a href="https://www.rtca.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/SC-239-5G-Interference-Assessment-Report_274-20-PMC-2073_accepted_changes.pdf">describes</a> radio altimeters as "the only sensor onboard a civil aircraft which provides a direct measurement of the clearance height of the aircraft over the terrain or other obstacles." Airlines and other aircraft operators, as a result, are required to limit operations that require a radio altimeter when "in the presence of 5G C-Band interference.""This [airworthiness directive] was prompted by a determination that radio altimeters cannot be relied upon to perform their intended function if they experience interference from wireless broadband operations in the 3.7-3.98 GHz frequency band (5G C-Band)," the FAA wrote. But airlines say that complying with the new requirements will greatly disrupt normal operations. "Our belief is that by working collaboratively in good faith on a data-driven solution, we can achieve our shared goal of deploying 5G while preserving aviation safety."Airlines for America held short of filling an emergency lawsuit on Monday to stop the January 5 rollout and instead announced an agreement with AT&amp;T and Verizon to delay 5G implementation until January 19.The rollout will proceed on that date but the following months would then see the DOT and FAA review the data to determine mitigation efforts for airports. "We know aviation safety and 5G can co-exist and we are confident further collaboration and technical assessment will allay any issues," AT&amp;T said in a statement.

	"Just because a company belongs to the public sector, one should not be against it. But it has to perform,” said Raju. "We will do our best to ensure that passenger rights are not violated," he added.
 

	The minister said he is committed to increasing air connectivity as the poor air network in the country is a major concern. Raju also promised to take steps to create a level playing field for all players in this sector.
 

	On whether he would allow more foreign players in the aviation sector, Raju said, "We have to be of use to them without being detrimental to us."
 The issues raised in the media and the <keyword id="6354721" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="parliament">Parliament</keyword> from time to time would be addressed in right earnest, he added.

Various Taxes may rationalize in Aviation Sector in Budget 2021

The decision came after the <keyword id="6354705" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Directorate-General-of-Civil-Aviation" source="Orion">Directorate General of Civil Aviation</keyword> (DGCA) conducted a spot audit of Air India in January, during which evidence was collected and fleet-wise random reports were analysed. "The analysis of reports and evidence revealed that <keyword id="20879472" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="air-india-limited" source="keywords">Air India Limited</keyword> operated flight(s) with both flight crew aged above 60 years flying together in a few instances. "... the operator was also found deficient in providing adequate weekly rest, adequate rest before &amp; after ultra-long range flights and adequate rest on layover to the flight crew, which violates the extant provisions of the <keyword id="20777683" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="civil-aviation-requirements" source="keywords">Civil Aviation Requirements</keyword> pertaining to FDTL," the regulator said in a release. Further, the DGCA said there were instances of exceeding duty periods, wrongly marked training records and overlapping duties. On March 1, the regulator issued a show cause notice to Air India with respect to the violations. "The operator submitted its response to the show cause notice, which was not found satisfactory. Pursuant to the non-satisfactory response submitted by the operator, a fine of Rs 80,00,000 has been imposed on the operator," the release said.

India is now the 4th largest aviation market in the world

India is set to become the third largest aviation market in the next twenty years by adding 266 million passengers, thus taking over the United Kingdom. 
	 “Currently the ninth largest market, India will see a total of 367 million passengers by 2034, an extra 266 million annual passengers compared to today. It is an exciting prospect to think that in the next 20 years, more than twice as many passengers as today will have the chance to fly,” said Tony Tyler, director general and CEO of International Air Transport Association (<keyword id="64233" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="IATA">IATA</keyword>). 
	 
	He added, “Air connectivity on this scale will help transform economic opportunities for millions of people. At present, aviation helps sustain 58 million jobs and $2.4 trillion in economic activity. In 20 years’ time we can expect the global aviation to be supporting around 105 million jobs and $6 trillion in GDP”. 
	 
	According to the findings of IATA, the Indian domestic aviation market is pegged to grow at 6.9% while adding 159 million extra passengers on its domestic routes. 
	 
	At the 10th Indo-US Economic Summit organized by Indo America Chambers of Commerce, experts suggested that the <keyword id="34987" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="aviation-industry">aviation industry</keyword> in India could also further cement ties between the two countries. However, for this to be achieved, India will have to overcome several challenges. 
	 “Concession agreements for airports being in the nascent stage are plagued with issues pertaining to provisions relating to delay, change in law termination due to default, role of regulatory authorities and dispute resolution. It is hoped that with the passage of time, the government will address these issues,” said Dr. <keyword id="346396" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Lalit-Bhasin">Lalit Bhasin</keyword>, regional president of <keyword id="77185" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="IACC">IACC</keyword>. 
	 Apart from these issues, the aviation industry is marred by high airport costs, which resulted in several international airlines reducing their frequency of flights from the airports. “Delhi and Mumbai airports are running high on costs, which is being recovered from the carriers. This is not good as the carriers are already paying off higher taxes on aviation turbine fuel (ATF),” said <keyword id="159659" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amber-Dubey">Amber Dubey</keyword>, Head and Partner, Aerospace and Defence, KPMG at the event. 
	 
	Besides, the industry is also facing shortage of trained aviation specialists. “Should that not be the case, India’s status among countries in the aviation scheme could be downgraded and there would be restrictions on the ability of Indian carriers to add flights to international destinations,” added Bhasin.

India’s top airline authorities will meet <keyword id="13124" type="POSITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Civil-Aviation-Minister">Civil Aviation Minister</keyword> <keyword id="1809891" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Pusapati-Ashok-Gajapathi-Raju">Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju</keyword> tomorrow to discuss scrapping restrictive rules for flying abroad and high taxes charged on the aviation turbine fuel (ATF). 
 Senior officials from <keyword id="6358200" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Jet-Airways">Jet Airways</keyword>, <keyword id="6358032" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="SpiceJet">SpiceJet</keyword>, <keyword id="6354706" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Indigo">IndiGo</keyword>, <keyword id="2573" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Air-India">Air India</keyword>, <keyword id="1583080" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="AirAsia-India">AirAsia India</keyword>, GoAir and Vistara (Tata-SIA joint venture which is to be launched soon) will attend the meeting. 
 
The airlines are likely to demand reduction in taxes on ATF, which constitutes about 40-45% of the total cost of operating an airline. They may also demand exemption from customs duty for aircraft engines. The exemption was withdrawn in 2012. 
 
India’s aviation sector has suffered heavy losses due to competitive pricing, soaring fuel costs and airport taxes. 
 
The airlines may also request to withdraw the 5/20 rule. Under this rule, airlines must have a fleet of 20 aircraft and five-year experience of domestic operations to become eligible to fly abroad. 
 
They may also raise the issue of government’s draft policy on air connectivity to regional and far-off areas. All the major airlines have aired their views to the Civil Aviation Ministry, opposing various provisions of the draft policy.
