First, the $40 Holmes Warm Mist Humidifier. Second, the $200 Avalon Ultrasonic Warm/Cool Mist Digital Humidifier.</p><p>Why buy a humidifier? I got the first because my apartment was cold and dry. I got the second to see what a high-end model is like.</p><p>Humidifiers, it turns out, get pretty complicated. My Avalon has an ultrasonic high-frequency oscillator that breaks up water into tiny particles and a ceramic filter made of silver ions. What does all that mean? I'll let you know when I figure it out.</p><p>The thing is, humidifiers are pretty great. I've discovered this - Avalon blasting in one room and Holmes in the other - and I've learned about many supposed benefits too.</p><p>CV Skinlabs founder <a href="http://cvskinlabs.com/about/founder-creator/"><span>Britta Aragon</span></a> names ten of them at <a href="https://www.bewell.com/blog/10-ways-a-humidifier-improves-your-health-skin-and-household-this-winter/"><span>Be Well</span></a>. Among them:</p><p><span>-Reduced risk of infections (<a href="http://www.bbc.com/future/story/20151016-the-real-reason-germs-spread-in-the-winter"><span>viruses and bacteria can't travel as well in moist air</span></a>).</span></p><p><span>-Softer, more vibrant skin (<a href="http://www.doctorclaudia.com/top-5-winter-skin-myths/"><span>cold, dry air draws out moisture</span></a>).</span></p><p>-Comfortable sinuses.</p><p>-Faster healing times (because better sinus health).</p><p>-Improved sleep.</p><p>From what I can tell, it just feels nice to have them on.</p><p>The Holmes Warm Mist Humidifier seems decent: <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Holmes-Warm-Mist-Humidifier-HWM6008-NUM/dp/B009U5APRE">a version on Amazon</a> has 4 stars and 130 reviews. It certainly gets the job done. My only complaint, aside from a faint and occasionally annoying trickling sound, is the somewhat arduous cleaning process you're meant to do daily and weekly. (<a href="https://www.bewell.com/blog/10-ways-a-humidifier-improves-your-health-skin-and-household-this-winter/"><span>Aragon says</span></a> you can get away with cleaning once a week if you use distilled or demineralized water; also using a filtered humidifier and changing the filters regularly helps.)</p><p>The Avalon Digital Humidifier is no doubt sleeker, a black and white device that lights up neon blue and sprays a fine mist into the air, and it's also apparently pretty good. It has <a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N9LGHKR/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&amp;psc=1">5 stars and 5 reviews on Amazon</a>, at least some of them convincing. Reviewer Fuzzy Wuzzy, in a post on December 28, 2016, announced that the manufacturer had listened to their past concerns and responded to all of them in its 2016 model. "The machine is the best cool/warm mist humidifier I have used," Fuzzy Wuzzy writes. "It's very similar to the ones we see on Asian drama shows and wish we always had ..." Top 500 Reviewer Jonny_Amazon, in a post on December 29, offered his own praise: "This humidifier has premium and luxury written all over it ..."</p><p>Personally, I'm still unsure what makes a good humidifier. Confusingly, Avalon also sells a different $200 humidifier: that one, which has <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Avalon-Premium-Ultrasonic-Digital-Humidifier/dp/B01M5KQTSX/ref=sr_1_3?s=home-garden&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1483731139&amp;sr=1-3&amp;keywords=avalon+humidifier">4.5 stars and 67 reviews on Amazon</a>, has a different technological approach, making use of replaceable filters instead of a ceramic filter among other differences. Again, I'll let you know if I figure it out.</p><p>Regardless, humidifiers seem like a good thing to have in the winter. Sidecar, one of Uber's rivals, has shut down

<br /><ul><li>A team of researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have developed special proteins to help save the lungs of Coronavirus patients.<br /></li><li>The immune system’s overreaction can cause a ‘<keyword id="7026456" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cytokine-storm">cytokine storm</keyword>’ that can be so harmful the lungs that it could lead to death.<br /></li><li>The scientists have been working on the solution for nearly 10 years, far before the coronavirus pandemic came along. <br /></li><li>The QTY code makes the proteins in amino acids hydrophilic instead of hydrophobic.<br /></li></ul>Just because humans don’t have natural immunity against Coronavirus doesn’t mean that the body doesn’t try to fight back. One of the ways it can do this is by launching a ‘cytokine storm’ — a burst of immune overreaction. <br /><br />As the body fights against the virus in this manner, the excess protein also damages the lung leading to death.<br /><br /><div type="image" title="protein_edited" msid="75250934" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;This image shows schematic illustrations for Fc-fused QTY variant cytokine receptors with an antibody-like structure. These illustrations are not to scale and the receptor structures are significantly emphasized for clarity.&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div><br /><br />A team of researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (<a href="http://news.mit.edu/2020/proteins-cytokine-storms-covid-19-0416">MIT</a>) have developed special proteins based on the structure of antibodies to soak up the excess cytokines — that could potentially save lives. <br /><br />“The idea is that they can be injected into the body and bind the excessive cytokines as generated by the cytokine storm, removing the excessive cytokines and alleviating the system from the infection,” said <a href="http://news.mit.edu/2020/proteins-cytokine-storms-covid-19-0416">Rui Qing</a>, one the senior authors of the study published in the Quarterly Review of Biophysics (QRB) Discovery.<br /><br />The next step will be to test their proteins in humans cells and in animal models of cytokine release to mimic what happens during coronavirus infection, according to David Jin, CEO and President of Avalon Globo Care — a biotech and healthcare services company listed on the New York Stock Exchange — who is also one of the authors of the paper. <br /><br /><strong>The solution was 10 years in the making<br /></strong>Shuguang Zhang, another senior author of the paper and a principal research scientist in the MIT Media Lab’s Laboratory of Molecular Architecture, began working on blocking the effects of cytokine storm using a modified version of membrane-embedded proteins 10 years ago.<br /><br />When studies started to suggest that COVID-19 was inducing cytokine storms in a few patients, the researchers realised that their custom-made receptor proteins might be able to help.<br /><br />“As it turns out, our research initiated in April 2019 is directly relevant to the treatment of COVID-19 infected patients,” said <a href="http://news.mit.edu/2020/proteins-cytokine-storms-covid-19-0416">Zhang</a>.<br /><br /><strong>Making proteins water friendly<br /></strong>The process calls for replacing some of the hydrophobic amino acids with others hydrophobic amino acids which have a similar structure. That means instead of repelling water molecules, they will now be able to form an ionic or hydrogen bond with water molecules. The scientists call this the QTY code.<br /><br />The method can modify the hydrophobic regions of the proteins by making them soluble in water. Ordinarily, these proteins have proven difficult to study because once they’re extracted from a cell’s membrane — they are unstable.<br /><br />Being hydrophilic also means that it’s easier for the proteins to travel through the human bloodstream. Else, the hydrophobic versions of the proteins would likely stick to cells that they encounter.<br /><br />The scientists also attached antibody segments called ‘the Fc region’ to their receptor proteins. This is the tail region of an antibody that interacts with cell surface receptors. MIT scientists find a way to protect lungs of Coronavirus patients from ‘cytokine storms’

Markets regulator <keyword id="35210" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sebi" source="Orion">SEBI</keyword> on Tuesday said it has recovered pending dues worth Rs 6.57 crore from Sahara India Real Estate Corporation, its chief <keyword id="31933" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="subrata-roy" source="Orion">Subrata Roy</keyword>, and others in the case pertaining to flouting norms in issuance of optionally fully convertible debentures.<br /><br />"In view of the payment of the amount of Rs 6.57 crore due under the certificate, the said certificate is hereby completed," the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) said in its recovery order.<br /><br />The amount included interest and other charges.<br /><br />The regulator in December ordered the attachment of bank and demat accounts of Sahara India Real Estate Corporation (now known as Sahara Commodity Services Corporation), Subrata Roy, <keyword id="1595961" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ashok-roy-choudhary" source="Orion">Ashok Roy Choudhary</keyword>, Ravi Shanker Dubey and <keyword id="15891249" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="vandana-bharrgava" source="Orion">Vandana Bharrgava</keyword> to recover Rs 6.42 crore for violating regulatory norms in the issuance of OFCDs (Optionally Fully Convertible Debentures). This amount included interest, all costs, charges and expenses.<br /><br />The recovery proceedings were initiated against these entities after they failed to pay Rs 6 crore fine imposed on them by SEBI in June 2022.<br /><br />The case relates to the issuance of OFCDs by Sahara India Real Estate Corporation and Sahara Housing Investment Corporation during 2008-09. SEBI recovers dues worth ₹6.57 crore from Sahara Group firms, Subrata Roy & others

The <keyword id="6355302" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rupee" source="Orion">rupee</keyword> depreciated 25 paise to 82.46 against the US dollar in early trade on Monday, weighed down by firm crude oil prices and a negative trend in domestic equities.<br /><br />At the interbank foreign exchange, the domestic unit opened weak at 82.44 against the dollar, then fell to 82.46, registering a decline of 25 paise over its last close.<br /><br />On Friday, the rupee settled at 82.21 against the dollar.<br /><br />The <keyword id="75201" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dollar-index" source="Orion">dollar index</keyword>, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, rose 0.48 per cent to 102.99.<br /><br />Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, advanced 5.50 per cent to USD 84.28 per barrel.<br /><br />"... Appreciation in rupee shall remain limited to 81.50-81.80 zone where importer can target buying and upside shall for now remain protected towards 82.70-82.90 region for this week," CR Forex Advisors MD-Amit Pabari said.<br /><br />"With a holiday shortened week, highlights would be the RBI policy due on April 6 and US payrolls due on April 7," Pabari added.<br /><br />The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the Reserve Bank will be meeting for three days on April 3, 5 and 6 to take into account various domestic and global factors before coming out with the first bi-monthly monetary policy for fiscal 2023-24.<br /><br />The RBI has already increased the repo rate by a total of 250 basis points since May in a bid to contain inflation though it has continued to remain above the central bank's comfort zone of 6 per cent for most of the time.<br /><br />In the domestic equity market, the 30-share BSE Sensex was trading 64.56 points or 0.11 per cent lower at 58,926.96. Weighed down by crude prices, Rupee falls 25 paise to 82.46/USD

SpiceJet Ltd on Monday said it has hived off its cargo and logistics business <keyword id="6866514" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="SpiceXpress" source="Orion">SpiceXpress</keyword> into a separate entity -- SpiceXpress and Logistics Pvt Ltd, from April 1. Well, just when we thought smartphones and wearables had made those little pagers obsolete, one company is looking to bring them back.</p>
<p class="p1"><a href="http://www.onbeep.com/#about-onbeep" target="_blank">OnBeep</a>, a San Francisco startup that wants to make a dedicated piece of hardware so groups can talk to each other with the press of a button "without having to fiddle with a smartphone," <a href="http://www.geekwire.com/2014/onbeep-raises-6-25-million-create-star-trek-esque-communicator/" target="_blank">as GeekWire's Blair Hanley Frank put it</a>, has raised $6.25 million in a funding round led by <a href="http://www.avalon-ventures.com/bios/rich-levandov">Avalon Ventures' Rich Levandov</a>.</p>
<p class="p3"><span class="s1">"There are countless mobile messaging apps, and none of them give people a way to stay connected to each other without having to look down at their smartphone," Levandov said in a press release. "We backed OnBeep because we believe they will fundamentally change the way the world communicates."</span></p>
<p class="p3"><span class="s1">OnBeep was cofounded by <a href="http://www.crunchbase.com/person/roger-wood">Roger Wood</a>, a product design and marketing manager for Nextel; <a href="https://twitter.com/ampledata" target="_blank">Greg Albrecht</a>, previously a senior software engineer at Splunk; and <a href="https://twitter.com/jesserobbins" target="_blank">Jesse Robbins</a>, a former Amazon Availability Program Manager and cofounder of Chef, a software tool that's used to streamline the task of maintaining servers. </span></p>

<p class="p3"><span class="s1">Robbins described the company's product as one similar to the two-way communicators used in "Star Trek," but the idea is to help groups of people - like families or companies - communicate with each other in real-time without needing to constantly reach for their smartphone. </span></p>
<p class="p3"><span class="s1">The company says the device will pair with a user's smartphone, but declined to offer details about what the final design will look like or how much it will cost.</span></p>
<p class="p3"><span class="s1">Perhaps OnBeep's product will straddle the line between the clunky pagers of yesteryear and the wearables of tomorrow, which aim to put notifications on our wrists while also offering us potential side benefits, like the ability to track one's health. Hopefully, OnBeep's product looks a little more modern than the beepers of old, and there's a good chance of that happening: OnBeep's 20-person team consists of former employees from Apple, Google, Northrop Grumman, and Lab126, Amazon's hardware design lab.</span></p>
<p class="p3"><span class="s1">We've reached out to OnBeep to learn more about how its product will differentiate itself from typical pagers and beepers, and we'll update this story if we learn more.</span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p>

This Company Just Raised $6 Million To Build A Beeper

<p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Node</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>Searching on Google can often feel like a useless pursuit. Type something into the search box, and millions of results pop up with endless information that can take hours to sort through. </span></p><p><span>San Francisco-based startup Node wants to change that. </span></p><p>Led by founder and CEO Falon Fatemi, Node emerged from stealth on Tuesday ready to take on its lofty goal of changing the way we discover information. By using AI to connect you or your business with the right opportunity at the right time, Node wants to "accelerate serendipity" on the web. </p><p>Node's patent-pending technology works by indexing people, places, products, and companies instead of web pages, and using this data to connect customers to opportunities. So far, it has half a billion profiles. The AI understands the relationships between people and companies, and can marry its data layer with a customer's personal data.</p><p>Node is currently integrated with Salesforce, and customers can ask questions like "What company will be most interested in my product?" Node will tell the customer who or what they need to connect with, why it came up with that answer, and even what to say to make the most of the opportunity. It's searching without using a search box.  </p><p><span>"Search is really great when you know what you're looking for, but we're living in a world where there is more information created in a single day than in the past 90 years," said Fatemi. </span></p><p>Node's recent funding includes $10.8 million of Series A funding led by Avalon Ventures with participation from Mark Cuban, NEA, and Canaan Partners; Node has raised $16.3 million in funding overall. Fatemi says the purpose of staying in stealth was meant to demonstrate the power of the technology before the official launch. So far, Node has made over $100 million in customer revenue and identified $4 billion in revenue for businesses and marketers. <br /><span></span></p><p>Fatemi is the daughter of two generations of serial entrepreneurs: her parents and her grandmother. She became Google's youngest employee at the age of 19 while taking a full load of undergrad classes. While there, she worked on global expansion and strategic partnerships before working as a consultant in the startup world.</p><p>Node was the result of a personal project of Fatemi's. She decided do an analysis of all the introductions she'd made between friends and colleagues over the past five years to see what kind of outcomes had taken place. She emailed people in her network, saying hello and asking if anything had come of the introduction she had facilitated between them and someone else. She found that her introductions had led to millions of dollars of investments, sales and partnerships. </p><p>"I was acting as the node within my own network facilitating opportunities with the right people at the right time" she said. </p><p>Right now,<span> Node is focusing on establishing itself in the sales and marketing space, working with businesses to find potential revenue sources, but Fatemi sees a world where Node's technology can be used for almost everything - even something as personal (and complicated) as dating.</span></p><p><span>Take for example, an app like Tinder. The way it's currently set up, in order to find a potential match you have to swipe through hundreds of profiles, absorbing the data on each person before deciding if he or she is the one you're looking for. Node could eliminate that entire process by taking the information it knows about you (education background, interests, age, etc.), finding that perfect someone within their data graph, setting you up with a date, or several. Now, Apple's biggest cash cow may be fading, according to one analyst.</p><p>Neil Cybart, the founder of <a href="https://www.aboveavalon.com/">Above Avalon</a>, sat down with Steve Milunovich, an analyst at UBS, for a Q&amp;A after Apple's big iPhone X event earlier this month. Cybart said that one of the biggest announcements at the event was not the newest iPhone, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-watch-3-specs-features-photos-2017-9">but the cellular data connection in the next generation of Apple Watch</a>. He said the cellular connection is evidence that we are moving away from the iPhone as the most important device in our digital lives.</p><p>"<span>I think eventually all smartwatches are going to have some sort of cellular connection. You're going to want the ability to always be connected and not worry if you're connected to an iPhone or a Wi-Fi network. I think eventually you'll get to the point where the Apple Watch is completely independent from the iPhone," Cybart told UBS. "It also starts a trend where the iPhone starts to evolve... I don't see the iPhone remaining as some sort of hub in our digital or tech life."</span></p><p><span>Cybart said that he sees smartphones going the way of the TV. Most consumers will still own one, but the emphasis will move away from it. Televisions are seen more as accessories these days, a place to watch mobile content on a larger screen when it's convenient. Cybart says that a lot of people are perfectly happy watching content on their phones and iPads, even when they are in the living room with their TVs.</span></p><p><span>The newest Apple Watch won't have what it takes for people to leave their smartphones at home for good, but it starts that trend. For a quick trip to the grocery store, or a morning run, a watch will be the perfect companion. It will keep you connected enough for emergencies, and allow enough access to your streaming music and audio podcasts to pass the time.</span></p><p><span>Smart glasses or contact lenses are often touted as the smartphone killers of the future, especially as augmented reality technology starts to develop and become mainstream. Cybart thinks this will happen eventually, but first, the consumer will have to become educated about what AR can do, and how best to use it.</span></p><p><span>If Cybart is right, the iPhone X is the first move toward an iPhone-less future. Apple has said it wants to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/sales-from-apples-service-business-is-second-only-to-the-iphone-2017-8">increase its services revenue substantially</a>, which shows the company trying to diversify its money-making schemes. If the iPhone does become more of a second (or third) screen for consuming content and communicating, at least Apple will have other methods of making money.</span></p><p><span>The key differentiator for Apple in the future, regardless of how many iPhones they are selling, is their design, Cybart says. Apple is falling behind its rivals like Google and Facebook when it comes to their technology, but that's perfectly acceptable because it's a design company, not a tech company, Cybart said.</span></p><p><span>"[Apple's] power is found with the industrial designers. I think they are the ones who control product strategy. Even Apple's PR stresses this design focus because they know that's what sets them apart.
