As nationwide protests by doctors continue over the alleged rape and murder of a trainee case at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, <keyword id="19934441" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="patients" source="keywords">patients</keyword> at Delhi's Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital are experiencing delays in treatment. On Thursday, long queues formed, as the hospital struggled with reduced staffing due to the ongoing strike. Dr Ajay Shukla, Medical Superintendent at RML Hospital, said that they faced issues due to the influx of <keyword id="19934441" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="patients" source="keywords">patients</keyword> from distant locations. "Our faculty are doing their best to attend to patients in the OPD, but due to the shortage of doctors, it's taking more time. Our elective operation theatres (OTs) are functioning, but compared to before the strike, there has been a decline. Emergency OTs are operating normally, but there is a 40% reduction in elective OTs," he said. Dr Shukla expressed hope that the doctors would end their strike soon, noting that the <keyword id="19900449" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="government" source="keywords">government</keyword> has addressed all their demands."I appealed to the doctors yesterday to call off their strike. I hope it will be called off today, as the <keyword id="19900449" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="government" source="keywords">government</keyword> has met all their demands. The matter is also being heard in the Supreme Court, and the Chief Justice of India has also made an appeal," he added. A patient at the hospital told that his operation had been delayed for a long time. "Every time I come here, they delay the operation with some excuse. I have no place to stay and have to sleep on the street," he said. Another patient, Rakesh Verma, who came for his 32-year-old son's treatment, said he had visited many <keyword id="19910449" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hospitals" source="keywords">hospitals</keyword>, including private ones, without success. "My son's hands and feet have swollen in the last 2-3 days. The panel will be headed by Cabinet Secretary, Government of India as its Chairperson, and has been constituted following the Supreme Court's direction on August 20. Due to the ongoing strike by resident doctors, services at AIIMS, Delhi, are severely impacted. OPD services are down by 65%, admissions by 40%, operation theatres reduced by 90%, laboratory services by 30%, radiological investigations by 55%, and nuclear medicine by 20%, as of 4:30 pm yesterday. On August 9, a postgraduate trainee doctor was allegedly raped and murdered while on duty at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, sparking nationwide strikes and protests by the medical community. <h2>Commute also disrupted </h2>Not just patients, commuters in Delhi-NCR also faced a tough time, as taxi and autorickshaw drivers began their two-day strike on Thursday, demanding better compensation from cab aggregator services. Taxi and auto unions said inadequate compensation, coupled with aggergators launching bike taxi services has hit their livelihood. 80% of autorickshaws and taxis are off the road in the national capital, Delhi Auto Taxi Transport Congress Union (DATTCU) president Kishan Verma claimed, and announced that a protest will be held at the Jantar Mantar. Anil Pradhan, a cab driver, demanded a ban on bike taxis that offer services using non-commercial numberplates. "The government should step in and ban the commercial plying of vehicles with non-commercial numberplates. It is becoming difficult to make ends meet," he said. Adarsh Tiwari, another cab driver, said, "The companies offer us very less rate for our services. Due to this, we are unable to pay the installments of our vehicles and meet other expenses. We are unable to ensure good education for our children and sufficient food for our families." People took to social media to complaint about delay in getting cabs and cancellations. "Spent the last 35 mins trying to get a cab in Noida for Delhi. What's wrong with @Olacabs @Uber_India @rapidobikeapp," X user Prashhush posted. Another X user, Kshitiz Agarwal said,"Is it only me or uber doesn't work anymore now? Couldn't find a uber cab for 30 mins nowadays even at posh localities like south extension, new delhi #uber #ola." DATTCU president Verma said that "we will also be holding a protest at Jantar Mantar to demand a ban on plying of private vehicles by cab aggregator companies. Why are we made to take permits and pay taxes when private vehicles are allowed to ply? We demand that the government impose a ban on them."

On May 12, Vineeth Vijayan happened to take an auto from <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=bengaluru&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Bengaluru</a> town to the <keyword id="27558" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Medical-college">medical college</keyword> where his friend’s mother was admitted when he chanced upon this nameless hero disguised as an <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=autorickshaw&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">auto-rickshaw</a> driver. 
 
Vijayan, who was suffering from back pain asked the young driver to ride the rickshaw smoothly to which he replied ‘Okay Sir’ in a gentle voice. 
 
He was surprised, mainly because he was expecting an usual rude reply, like he has in the past. 
 
But that wasn’t all. He was in for more surprise at the end of his trip when he asked the driver how much the fare was. Instead of replying with the amount, the young driver just points to a box kept near his seat and replied, ‘Put anything that you think is satisfactory for this ride.’ 
 
The label on the box read, ‘Donation for the poor and needy patients’ 
 
It was only after he left did Vijayan get to know his incredible story, from the security personnel at the hospital. 
 As it turns out, the <keyword id="73220" type="POSITION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Autorickshaw-driver">autorickshaw driver</keyword> is a 3rd year M.B.B.S student whose father passed away sometime back and whose elder brother is paralysed. He also has two younger sisters. 
 
The superintendent of the hospital had given him the auto as a gift for passing his exams with good marks. Since then, he has been offering rides to the medical college for free or asks people to put some money in the box. 
 
At the end of every month, he uses that money for the treatment of the needy people in the hospital. 
 
This only goes on to be prove that all you need is a big heart to be a hero. This young man is a reminder of the fact that not all superheroes wear capes.

Uber partners with India's first electric car maker for e-autorickshaws

New Delhi, Mar 31 () Ride-hailing platform Ola on Tuesday said it will offer interest-free credit of up to Rs 3,600 to driver-partners to help them meet immediate household expenses amid the coronavirus pandemic. Under its 'Sahyog' programme, Ola will offer pre-approved credit of up to Rs 3,600 to be disbursed over three weeks using the microfinance lending platform, Avail Finance, a statement said. The amount will be offered interest-free to drivers operating auto-rickshaws, cabs, kaali-peelis and taxis on the Ola platform, it added. "The programme is expected to impact over one lakh families who are in need of liquidity for immediate household expenses. The loan will aim to supplant the incomes of hundreds of thousands of driver-partners who haven't had a steady source of income due to the nationwide lockdown," it said. The credit shall be set off against earnings on the platform over a period upon return of normalcy in business, it added. "'Sahyog' enables them to access micro-credit instantly, in their registered bank accounts, allowing drivers and their families to tide through these difficult times with much needed liquidity. "We are committed to doing everything we can to reduce the economic burden and safeguard the interests of our driver-partners and their families through these unprecedented times," Ola spokesperson said. Ankush Aggarwal, founder and CEO of Avail Finance said the company's platform will help Ola identify eligible driver partners as well as to manage disbursement of credit in real-time. With the implementation of the lockdown, the government has allowed only people in essential services like healthcare, banking and media to commute. COVID-19: Ola offers interest-free micro credit to driver-partners

New Delhi, Mar 27 () Ride-hailing major Ola on Friday launched a fund to support auto-rickshaw, cab, Kaali-Peeli and taxi drivers across India amid the ongoing 21-day lockdown. Besides, Ola co-founder Bhavish Aggarwal will forgo salary for one year that will go towards the fund. Launched under Ola Foundation, the 'Drive the Driver Fund' will support the drivers through contributions from the Ola group, investors and via a crowdfunding platform for citizens and other institutions, a statement said. "The proceeds of the fund will help towards the welfare and upliftment of drivers and their families who have been affected by the restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic," it added. Ola Group and employees are contributing an initial capital of Rs 20 crore to the fund and through the crowdfunding campaign, the intent is to raise up to Rs 50 crore. "The mobility industry has been brought to a grinding standstill during these stressed times, and the driver community has been finding it hard to pay for their family expenses without a source of income," the statement said. Ola's initiative aims to bring together multiple stakeholders in the ecosystem such as customers, investors and partner organisations to participate in supporting millions of drivers and their families across India, it added. This initiative will focus on key areas such as emergency support and essential supplies. In due course, Ola Foundation will also take up initiatives to support drivers in areas such as aid for children's education, among others. "Millions of drivers and their families have been affected, and even a humble contribution can have a lasting impact on their wellbeing. We invite all the stakeholders of the mobility industry to join us in every way you can, and support the people who move us in this difficult phase," an Ola spokesperson said. Ola has undertaken a number of measures, including launching a special COVID-19 insurance cover exclusive for their driver partners and their spouses. COVID-19: Ola launches fund to help drivers, CEO to forego a year salary

The Maharashtra government has off lately faced a lot of pressure from taxi and auto rickshaw unions for curbing Ola and Uber, the app-based taxi aggregators in Mumbai city, owing to which the government might soon take some action. 
 
The reason, some say, is that the government doesn’t want to offending such a large number of taxi and auto rickshaw drivers, looking at the political cost that it might have to pay for this later. 
 
"There are 1lakh auto rickshaw drivers in the city and about 30,000 taxi drivers, so if each driver has a family of three, then the number comes to around 5 lakh people. So you are antagonising five lakh voters during the civic elections in Mumbai and Thane," a government official told <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/startups/maharashtra-may-put-curbs-on-app-based-taxi-aggregators-ola-uber/articleshow/53409989.cms">ET</a>. "We are working on a plan where taxi and autos also operate like Uber and Ola with flexible fare structures," he added. 
 It was because of an assurance from the government that one of these unions called off a strike that was scheduled from yesterday. However, needless to say, executives from Uber and Ola were also not going to sit quietly, because of which they have sought an appointment with CM <keyword id="6355042" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Devendra-Fadnavis">Devendra Fadnavis</keyword>.

<keyword id="6354720" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ola">Ola</keyword> announced today its launching the auto-rickshaw service in 12 new cities across India. Ola Autos is now available in a total of 24 cities across the country. The company targets to serve at least 2 million daily rides by end of 2017. 
 The new cities that were launched today are Tier II markets of Bhopal, Ranchi, Bhubaneswar, Kota, Surat, Madurai, Guwahati, Coimbatore, Nagpur, Jodhpur, Visakhapatnam and Udaipur. The24 cities in which <keyword id="2761557" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="OLA-AUTO">Ola Auto</keyword> will be present currently has over 3 million auto-rickshaws, and does over 30 million rides per day. 
 
Nitesh Prakash, Senior Director, Operations at Ola said, “We are widening the choice of urban mobility for citizens over and above our current offerings like Micro and Mini in these markets, taking us closer to our mission of building mobility for a billion Indians.” 
 
The Ola app for auto-drivers is currently available in 8 Indian languages including English, Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Marathi, Tamil and Telugu. The company has over 100,000 auto rickshaws registered on its platform across 24 cities and plans to launch in more cities in the coming months.

This would be good news for many and may also help reduce corruption in the issuance of commercial licenses. Up till now, people had to first get a private licence and then wait one year to get the commercial licence. This roundabout way has been done away with, however, the commercial driving licence remains mandatory for those driving trucks, buses and other heavy commercial vehicles. That said, there are some inhibitions that this move will increase congestion on the roads. Anil Chikkara, an expert on transport issues, told <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/commercial-driving-licence-not-needed-for-taxis-autos/articleshow/63822859.cms">The Times Of India</a>, “In an ideal condition, one cab replaces at least six private cars and an autorickshaw substitutes over a dozen cars since these are on the move and need little parking space.” And by that logic, this move will help ease the problem. Chikkara’s comment is echoed in a study by <keyword id="136162" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Boston-Consulting-Group">Boston Consulting Group</keyword> commissioned by <keyword id="1042120" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uber">Uber</keyword>, which says ridesharing could help deal with a mammoth problem - parking. If embraced, 760 to 22,000 acres of parking space in four primary cities -- Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Bangalore -- could be used for other purposes. In Delhi alone, up to 22,369 acres of space can be saved by adopting rideshare (assuming rideshare substitutes for private cars), which is almost 4 times the size of Indira Gandhi Airport. According to the report, peak congestion in cities averages 149% which is substantially higher than other comparable cities around Asia. Commuters take 1.5 times longer to travel a given distance during peak hours, compared to travel time during non-peak hours. This is currently estimated to cost a whopping $22 billion per year - and that is only in the four primary cities. Substituting ridesharing for private cars could eliminate between 33%-68% of the total cars on the road and in-turn reduces congestion by 17%-31% across these cities. According to Barney Harford, COO of Uber, "If car ownership trends continue, Indian cities risk coming to a complete standstill in only a few years”. He goes on to say, “Ridesharing can be part of the solution to traffic congestion because it uses technology to get more people into fewer cars. We can unlock our cities and their full potential, but we have to do it together.” A few years back, an average city dweller would baulk at the idea of sharing their taxi with anyone. Cut to 2017-2018, not only is ridesharing becoming acceptable, many in fact consider it to be a preferred way to travel. According to the report, over 79% of the respondents from the four primary cities -- Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Bangalore -- who plan to buy a car in the next five years said that they would reconsider the move, should the affordability and convenience of ridesharing match or exceed that of owning a car. The move will, of course, help Uber and <keyword id="6354720" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ola">Ola</keyword>, who have been trying to push ridesharing in the countries. Not requiring a commercial license will likely help the companies ramp up the number of drivers who sign up for their services.

It’s a fact universally acknowledged that city commute for urban young Indians have undergone a vast makeover. Thanks to <keyword id="6354720" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="ola">Ola</keyword> and Uber, getting a cab has been breeze and doesn’t burn a hole in the pocket. However if you are regular to any of these cab services, you would know, some of the chauffeurs often tend to be rude, inattentive to customers and callous. While in some cases, it’s the general habit of chauffeurs, many a times; the driver is doing his duties for last 17 hours or more continuously. And his lack of rest is a major reason for the behaviour. When these chauffeurs had joined Ola and Uber, they thought that the earnings would be no less than Rs 1 lac, as advertised. While the initial days looked dreamy, some drivers repent of having bought a vehicle and paying the <keyword id="6357050" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="emi">EMI</keyword> now. The earnings have gone below expectations and now the chauffeurs need to work very hard to make ends meet. The drivers have often protested but to no effect. And this is where a new cab hailing service <keyword id="4638372" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="sewa-cab">Sewa Cab</keyword>s had come up. Offering a tariff much lower than Ola and Uber, Sewa Cabs is run by drivers’ union in Delhi. The drivers conceived and soft-launched SEWA CAB on the first of May as the cheapest cab service in India with fares starting at just Rs.5 per k.m. Full launch will take place in the first half of July. Terming its model as ultra-low cost and independent of external funding, this promises to give power back to the drivers and liberate them from Ola and Uber while ensuring reliable, secure and affordable service to passengers. As opposed to 27% commission deducted by others from the driver’s earnings translating into more than Rs.15, 000 per month, Sewa Cab uses a subscription model with a fixed monthly fee of Rs.700. In other words, it will charge just a little over 1% of the driver’s earnings and still stay in black. This service has also introduced “Street Hail”. One can simply hail a cab on the street and still enjoy fares lower than any other cab operator in the country. More than 100+ drivers are signing up for Sewa Cabs on a daily basis. Commenting on his views on viability, the founder of Sewa Cabs, <keyword id="201896" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="rakesh-agarwal">Rakesh Agarwal</keyword> told <keyword id="824043" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Business-Insider">Business Insider</keyword>, “Our first step is to make people used to Sewa Cabs. And in a few years, Ola and Uber would be out of completion. Then we would start charging a bit higher tariff. “ Before deciding the fares, we spoke to hundreds of drivers. They all said that the average fare works out to Rs.15 even though the fare advertised by Ola and Uber is Rs.6 per k.m. “In order to compete against them effectively, the drivers unanimously suggested that we keep our fares at par with them,” he added. Sewa Cabs takes pride in the fact that it is owned and governed by the drivers through a nine member governing body – all of them are cab drivers. Apart from lower commission to be paid to aggregator, the drivers would be trained on various aspects of life. Apart from that drivers would be provided proper guidance on relaxing from days’ work. While <keyword id="781" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="agarwal">Agarwal</keyword> himself is quite positive about the endeavour, what made us feel worried is that passenger issues haven’t been taken care of. Speaking to Business Insider, Agarwal said, the customer care will also be by the drivers’ union and this is where it gets worrisome. We have seen how auto-rickshaw unions don’t advice drivers on charging above meter and refusals. And it’s the irate auto rickshaw drivers that have buoyed cab hailing service in most urban metros. Of the leading cab hailing services, most of them have a well managed social media response team with whom you can get in touch at any point of the day over most major issues. Moreover, it’s not always a cheap mode of transport. <keyword id="624" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Women">Women</keyword> in Indian urban cities alarmed by rise in the incidents of women harassment look for a reliable mode of conveyance. While autos hardly go by meter, it’s cab they trust upon, which again have precedence of not-so-decent treatment to women.
