Healthcare workers rely on <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/who-global-shortage-of-ppe-is-urgent-threat-2020-3">personal protective equipment (PPE)</a> to protect themselves from getting sick or potentially infecting patients, but doctors and nurses from <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/doctors-new-york-treating-coronavirus-patients-reuse-n95-masks-2020-3">New York</a> to <a href="https://theintercept.com/2020/03/21/oakland-coronavirus-hospital-kaiser/">California</a> have reported a lack of supplies, which could lead to the outbreak worsening. </p><p>Now, facilities with stores of 3D printers are jumping in to help. While more urgent life-save equipment, like N95 respirator masks and ventilators, <a href="https://www.axios.com/3d-printing-coronavirus-masks-ventilators-3dba66dc-c463-4d40-8fd7-79ca1d46d7e4.html">can't be consistently or quickly be 3D-printed</a>, the process <em>is</em> being used to produce millions of plastic face shields for medical workers.</p><p>Tech and transportation giants like Apple, HP, and Ford have pivoted to printing face shields, while 3D-printing facilities at universities like Harvard and Syracuse have jumped in to help supply face shields to local hospitals. </p><p>And it's not just large universities and corporations who are getting involved in the effort. America Makes, a national accelerator for 3D printing (also known as additive manufacturing), has partnered with the Food and Drug Administration, Department of Veterans' Affairs, and the National Institutes of Health to <a href="https://www.americamakes.us/america-makes-launches-next-phase-in-response-to-covid-19/">build a repository</a> where manufacturers can upload their 3D-printable designs. The designs are reviewed and then fast-tracked to the NIH 3D Print Exchange, which is an open site for sharing designs. </p><p>This has allowed individuals and small-batch manufacturers to start producing protective face shields too. People like former Autodesk CEO Carl Bass have started <a href="https://www.gofundme.com/f/uzb56p-covid-19-face-shields">producing face shields on their own</a>, with the goal of making more than 20,000 to deliver to healthcare providers. </p><p>Still, companies and schools with large 3D-printing facilities are likely best equipped to produce large batches of face shields. Tech companies like Apple and Blue Origin and universities like Duke are using their arsenals of 3D printers to produce millions of face shields for medical workers

Its content gets distributed around the world.</strong></li><li><strong>McCray herself is an MIT graduate, who turned away from what could have been a career in Silicon Valley to help solve a problem that she fears is getting worse every year. </strong></li></ul><p>When she was 17, Netia McCray received a letter inviting her to attend a summer tech program for high school students at MIT. She thought the letter was junk mail, or maybe a scam. </p><p>She certainly didn't know that in a couple short years she would be leaving her home in Tallahassee to study full-time at MIT, or that she would be the first member of her family to travel abroad, as part of her undergraduate studies.</p><p>Ultimately, that invitation led her down a path that resulted in the foundation of <a href="http://mbadika.org/">Mbadika</a> (pronounced bah-GEE-ka), a Boston-based nonprofit organization working to solve an incredibly difficult problem. As technology skills become increasingly crucial in the modern economy, society risks leaving behind those who don't have access.</p><p>The organization is headquartered in Boston, and McCray says she sees many of the same dismal learning conditions for students there as those she's experienced in a few of the African nations with which Mbadika partners.</p><p>"I've come across public schools that do not have any computers available to middle school students. We often have to bring our own computers and our own 3D printers along to workshops," she said. "And that's just in Boston. I'm worried that the amount of effort needed to solve this problem is only becoming bigger and bigger."</p><p>Mbadika has set out to tackle the socio-economic symptoms of the digital divide, which the <a href="https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2018/03/closing-the-global-economy-s-new-digital-divide">World Economic Forum,</a> among others, has labeled one of the biggest problems facing the development of the economy.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Autodesk</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>To combat that gap, Mbadika uses technologies like 3D printing and virtual reality to get kids excited about learning - and her her favorite pop culture characters, like Marvel's Black Panther, to inspire them. For instance, McCray is now co-hosting a YouTube series, sponsored by AutoDesk, showing kids how to use a 3D printer to make "Black Panther" costume accessories.</p><p>"We help kids take the crazy ideas in their head, and make them a reality," McCray said, describing Mbadika's mission. Mbadika, when translated from the <span>Kimbundu </span>language, means an "idea, a thought or suggestion as to a possible course of action," and McCray says the word perfectly describes the organization's goals. </p><p>McCray and her team have partners in eleven countries - with a focus on sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America. In addition to developing demonstrations, workshops and teaching aids, they sell DIY buildable kits to teachers and parents of young creatives all over the world.</p><p>We spoke with McCray last Thursday-which happened to be International Women's Day- about her work, her inspirations, and her goals for the future.</p><h2>'It felt like everyone was competing for the same ten jobs'</h2><p>McCray was first inspired to start her own non-profit while at MIT. Her classmates were competing for highly-coveted jobs at the big-name tech companies - but she wanted to go a different route. </p><p>"It's not to say that working at IBM or Google is a waste of time, but it felt like everyone was competing for the same ten jobs, and I didn't understand why more people weren't interested in breaking off, starting their own tech companies or working on their own projects," says McCray.</p><p>For a long time, McCray thought that she, too would go into the tech industry. Indeed, on an MIT study abroad program, she ended up assisting with the development of carbon nanotubes for possible use in spacesuits or a space elevator. She assumed that, eventually, she would wind up in the orbit of Silicon Valley tech companies.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Netia McCray</span></p><p class="caption">McCray poses with some "Black Panther" accessories that she designed and had 3D-printed.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>But McCray grew worried about the curious, "nerdy" kids from modest backgrounds like her own - kids who wouldn't get to go to MIT, or who didn't have parents as supportive as her own, she says. She did a lot of reflecting on the famous Nicholas Kristof quote, "Talent is universal, opportunity is not."</p><p>"Those words made me realize there are so many kids out there with so many ideas that will never see the light of day...That's how Mbadika came to be," McCray said.</p><h2>'A very unique childhood'</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Netia McCray</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>"I had a very unique childhood, in that my parents always gave value to my never-ending curiosity," McCray said. Her father spent six weekends helping her building a scale replica of the Space Shuttle.</p><p>"I was this carefree girl," she remembers. "I had no idea there were people like me, but with many more resources than I had," she said. That was, until she got to MIT. </p><p>During her second year away at college, her father's health took a turn.</p><p>In his last months, McCray found out her father had his own dreams of attending MIT, which he had kept from his daughter, to save her the extra pressure of having to fulfill both of their dreams.</p><p>McCray flew home that summer just in time to present her father with her class ring, bearing his last name, before he died in June. </p><h1>Despite all odds</h1><p>McCray says that in a larger sense, she's faced pushback and skepticism all along the way.</p><p>"As a woman of color in a tech field, it is incredibly difficult to find people that will give me opportunities that are equal to the opportunities being awarded to many of my peers. Learning how to navigate the real world includes learning to navigate that difference," she said.</p><p>The intersections of McCray's identity as a "nerdy girl" and as a woman of color are reflected in her love of incorporating pop culture icons into her work, which ultimately lead to the "Black Panther" YouTube series and her partnership with Autodesk.</p><p>McCray says she's inspired by "Black Panther" because to the characters in the story "have not been made victims, they have not had their creative agencies robbed of them," the way many colonized peoples and nations have throughout history.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Netia McCray</span></p><p class="caption">Students attend a Mbadika workshop.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><h1>'Leverage what you have'</h1><p>However insurmountable Mbadika's mission may seem, McCray says she's excited about the future.</p><p>She likes to remind kids to never be too scared or too discouraged to reach out to mentors like herself, because a supportive mentor can be the strongest resource a student can have.</p><p>"There are so many people out there waiting to help you get ahead, and want to see you succeed. This 27-year-old MIT graduate explains why she gave up a promising career in tech to help kids get vital job skills

Square employees are getting the day off while Twitter is still at work, given it's a big day for the social media company.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Tech companies are known for their perks, from slides connecting floors of an office to the lavish cafeteria lunches employees get for free three times a day. </p><p>Yet, this year some tech companies are introducing a new one: getting Election Day off to vote. </p><p>Hunter Walk of Homebrew Ventures started the "Take Off Election Day" movement and has been keeping a running tally of companies that have promised to give their employees the day off. </p><p>So far, more than 340 companies of all sizes and industries have pledged to give their employees a free holiday, including Patagonia, Columbia University, Ford, and General Motors. 5 Top Multimedia Institutes In Delhi-NCR

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Kenzie Academy</span></p><p class="caption">Kenzie Academy cofounders Rehan Hasan, Courtney Spence, and Chok Ooi.</p></div><p></p></div></div>In the US, computer science jobs are often confined to the coasts - particularly the one hugging the Pacific Ocean.</p><p>In recent years, however, a growing number of startups <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/news/2017/06/29/trump-election-tech-start-ups-midwest/100027750/">have begun cropping up</a> in America's heartland. A new coding bootcamp called Kenzie Academy hopes to capitalize on that budding interest.</p><p>Instead of growing the bubble of Silicon Valley, <a href="https://www.kenzie.academy/">Kenzie Academy</a> wants to strengthen middle America by teaching non-tech workers, primarily those between 19 and 40 years old, the ins and outs of ones and zeroes.</p><h2>From zero to engineer in two years</h2><p>One of the guiding missions, according to Kenzie cofounder and CEO Chok Ooi, is to equip those working in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/obama-warns-congress-about-robot-job-takeover-2016-3">jobs vulnerable to automation</a> with flexible skills that could survive the 21st century.</p><p>"There's going to be a lot of new jobs coming up as new technology is being introduced," Ooi told Business Insider. "So we want to retrain people from all these jobs that are being automated away toward the new jobs that are coming up."</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_left"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Kenzie Academy</span></p><p class="caption">The Kenzie Academy office under renovation in preparation for the opening class in Indianapolis in October.</p></div><p></p></div></div>In early October, Kenzie set up shop at its first location in a coworking space in Indianapolis, Indiana. The goal will be to recruit about 25 students who can pursue one of three tracks.</p><p>The first is a six-month program to become a junior front-end developer - someone who can capably design the face of a web application. The second is a one-year program to learn both the front and back ends, otherwise known as "full stack." The third is a two-year track that teaches not just coding, but computer science as a whole.</p><p>"When they graduate, they'll have the capacity to architect and design more complex systems," Ooi said. "This is what will allow them to compete effectively against someone who's gone through a four-year computer science program."</p><h2>Dropping anchor into communities</h2><p>Not everyone shares Ooi's optimism that coding bootcamps are a ticket into the tech world. Over the past few years years, a number of graduates and tech executives have expressed doubt that these classes can actually compete with an undergraduate degree. At both Google and Autodesk, coding schools supply a small and sometimes negligible portion of the total staff, <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2016-12-06/want-a-job-in-silicon-valley-keep-away-from-coding-schools">Bloomberg reported in 2016.</a></p><p><span>"These tech bootcamps are a freaking joke," Mark Dinan, a Bay-Area recruiter for tech companies, <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2016-12-06/want-a-job-in-silicon-valley-keep-away-from-coding-schools">told</a> Bloomberg. "My clients are looking for a solid CS [computer science] degree from a reputable university or relevant work experience."</span></p><p>At Kenzie, classes will run five days a week for about eight hours at a time. Students will have the opportunity to stream the classes online, but for the sake of increasing bonds between students and mentors, Kenzie cofounder and COO Rehan Hasan said the class needed a physical meeting space.</p><p>"We're dropping anchor to be parts of communities, where we'll have a hyperlocalized view of things," Hasan told Business Insider. The company charges $12,000 for the six-month program. If students choose the 12-month track, at the six-month mark they can start doing consulting work for Kenzie that can subsidize a $20,000 price tag. The two-year track is also $20,000 - the idea being that the entire second year will pay for itself through consulting work, Ooi said.</p><p>The company has only just launched in Indiana, but already has its sights set on other cities, including Kansas City, New Orleans, Baton Rouge, or Detroit. Wherever it expands, Hasan and Ooi said, the goal will be to tap into an emerging market of talent, no matter the age.</p><p>"Schools focus a lot on the education part," Ooi said. A new startup is taking on Silicon Valley by teaching middle America how to code

But many of the most driven and desirable employees want more.</p>
<p>"It is becoming extremely important to be seen as an innovative employer if you want to win the top talent," <span>says Petter Nylander, the CEO of employer branding consultancy </span><a href="http://www.universumglobal.com/">Universum</a><span>.</span> "When we ask the students about top associations with their ideal employers, <keyword id="94495" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Innovation">innovation</keyword> is one of the most common words."</p>
<p>As part of its annual survey of how the next generation of employees regards America's biggest companies, Universum asked both business and <keyword id="27859" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="engineering">engineering</keyword> students which companies they thought were the most innovative employers out there.</p>
<p>Interestingly, both business and engineering students put tech giants <keyword id="6354427" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Apple">Apple</keyword> and <keyword id="6355629" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword> at the top.</p>
<p>Business students also highly rated companies like 3M, <span>General Electric, and Nike</span>. 3M was <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apples-innovation-problem-2013-4">the first company</a> to explicitly give employees 15% of their time to pursue independent, innovative projects. General Electric has the world's oldest and best-known corporate university, and Nike has one of the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/nikes-corporate-culture-2013-2">most committed workforces</a> out there. </p>

<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">For engineers, who have their pick of top companies, having an innovative employer is essential. Out of 40 areas that they graded employers on in the survey, innovation was listed as the second-most important.</span></p>
<p>And while business students picked several car companies, engineering students seem to prefer places that make slightly larger machines, naming companies like UTC Aerospace, Lockheed Martin, and Boeing. <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">All emphasize and invest in research, which may be why engineers rate them so highly.</span></p>

Business And Engineering Students Name The 10 Most Innovative Companies

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div>HoloLens is a big deal for Microsoft, a company that is struggling to retain relevancy with consumers after it&#xa0;missed out on the smartphone and tablet&#xa0;boom.<p>Rather than doubling down on mobile,&#xa0;Microsoft&#xa0;has decided to look into the future - and the result is HoloLens.&#xa0;</p><p>The headset, which has been at least three years in the making and is rumoured to be released sometime in early 2017, is all part of the new "<a href="http://www.infoworld.com/article/2610769/microsoft-net/one-windows--all-devices--the-new-microsoft-app-strategy-unveiled.html">One Windows</a>" strategy that sees Microsoft unify around the different strands of Windows.&#xa0;</p><p>Everything that Microsoft has learned has been brought together to create HoloLens: there's the hardware knowledge of the Surface, the app development&#xa0;knowledge from Windows, and the enterprise knowledge from Azure.&#xa0;</p><p>Here's everything we know about HoloLens so far:</p><h2>The Key&#xa0;Information</h2><ul><li>HoloLens will cost $3,000 (£1,940) for the developer edition (which has a limited roll-out in the coming months). The final hardware will likely be less expensive.&#xa0;</li><li>There is no release date for the consumer version yet, but rumours suggest it will launch in early 2017.</li><li>It uses the Windows Holographic computing platform which is based on Windows 10.</li><li>The uses for HoloLens are extensive in both the consumer and enterprise markets.&#xa0;</li><li>Microsoft has described it as a "five-year project": version one is just the starting point.&#xa0;</li></ul><h2>What, and who, is HoloLens for?</h2><p>Microsoft <a href="https://www.microsoft.com/microsoft-hololens/en-us/faq">describes HoloLens</a> as the "first holographic computer running Windows 10." The headset is different from&#xa0;other augmented or virtual reality headsets because&#xa0;objects that appear to the user are interactive&#xa0;rather than just overlays onto the environment. For example, the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aThCr0PsyuA">demo video</a> shows a father creating one of his son's drawings in his surroundings dynamically using Windows Holographic apps. (His son is delighted.)</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_left"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div>This gives HoloLens a new level of usefulness when compared to the competition - which includes Facebook's Oculus and Sony's Playstation VR headset - as the user can&#xa0;<em>do&#xa0;</em>rather than just&#xa0;<em>see</em>.&#xa0;<p>HoloLens appeals to two markets: consumers and enterprise. Here's how the headset can be used in both.&#xa0;</p><h3>Enterprise&#xa0;</h3><p>During the on-stage&#xa0;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jwMhdSffVUs">demo of HoloLens</a>,&#xa0;the company said&#xa0;that one of the main&#xa0;customers&#xa0;is&#xa0;going to be enterprise users, specifically&#xa0;businesses that deal with adding elements to real life objects, such as graphic designers or architects.&#xa0;</p><p>Here is how Microsoft sees it: If the whole room is wearing HoloLens then everyone will be seeing the same "reality" and, in turn, that reality can be altered&#xa0;<span>en masse</span>. This is a powerful and transformative technological leap and one that the company will likely play up&#xa0;during events and demos&#xa0;over the coming months.&#xa0;</p><p>Beyond designers or architects, organisations&#xa0;will find all kinds of uses for HoloLens. For example, universities could start using the headset to teach classes, such as those on medicine, as it would give students the feeling that they were actually there. The fact that HoloLens can create interactive&#xa0;environments could save university resources, too. Going back&#xa0;to the medicine example, students could operate over and over again on a patient or animal without ever having to use physical resources.&#xa0;</p><p>Because HoloLens uses "Universal Windows Apps," the outlay required of a company is also small. What this means is that developers create one app - a "Windows App" - which&#xa0;can seamlessly run on all platforms.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div>For Microsoft, getting enterprise customers on board is essential&#xa0;but it's&#xa0;also the easy part. The company&#xa0;really needs to capture the hearts, and minds, of&#xa0;ordinary people.&#xa0;<h3>Consumers</h3><p>The consumer applications for HoloLens are, if anything, even more extensive than enterprise. Just as the smartphone has torn up how we use a computer, HoloLens could do the very same thing by altering our&#xa0;<em>actual&#xa0;</em>reality, in real time.&#xa0;</p><p>There is, of course,&#xa0;potential for HoloLens to not live up to expectations,&#xa0;but if the technology is implemented correctly then the uses for HoloLens extend far beyond adding a new window into a virtual building.</p><p>A long-distance couple, for example, could communicate as if they were in the same room; a grandparent could see their new-born grandchild in hospital right away; children without a garden or open space can experience the freedom of endless miles of grass, right from their living room; and so on.&#xa0;</p><h2>Design&#xa0;</h2><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_left"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div>HoloLens is designed to fit onto your face as seamlessly as possible.<p>The premise of the device - showing virtual objects over real things - can only exist if the facilitator of that - in this case HoloLens - does not disturb the view and works 100% of the time.</p><p>To draw comparison: If your iPhone's screen didn't show you texts every time you checked, you would become skeptical of its use -&#xa0;and the same is true for HoloLens.&#xa0;</p><p>The device is made up of <a href="https://www.microsoft.com/microsoft-hololens/en-us/hardware">four distinct parts</a>: the headband (which wraps around a user's head); a sensor that captures information about the environment surrounding the user; two lenses onto which the holograms are projected; and the Holographic Processing Unit (HPU) which is effectively the CPU-like brain. Batteries and two speakers are stored in the HoloLens' arms.&#xa0;</p><p>The device as it is now is quite bulky, but as technology advances it should become smaller and smaller (and, most importantly, less conspicuous).&#xa0;</p><h2>Specifications</h2><p>Microsoft has been&#xa0;quiet&#xa0;on what actually powers HoloLens <a href="https://www.microsoft.com/microsoft-hololens/en-us/hardware">beyond describing</a> it as a "Holographic Processing Unit" that couples the two lenses onto which holograms are projected.&#xa0;</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div>The hardware is likely incredibly powerful, which could be one of the reasons Microsoft is slowly rolling it out. To fit what amounts to a desktop computer into a headset is no mean feat, and there will likely be multiple technical challenges along the way that could hinder the process substantially.&#xa0;<p>One of the games that Microsoft has demoed is Minecraft, which <a href="https://help.mojang.com/customer/en/portal/articles/325948-minecraft-system-requirements">recommends anything above</a> an Intel Core i3 CPU, 4GB of RAM, and 1GB of hard drive space. This will likely be the baseline of where Microsoft is working from with HoloLens.&#xa0;</p><p>During the October 6 event, Microsoft <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GpLmm-aUZrU">showed off a graphically intense game</a> - named Project Xray - which involved shooting aliens. While the game is frivolous, it show cases the power of HoloLens, even in its current pre-production form. (Gameplay starts at around 2:00.)&#xa0;</p><p>&#xa0;<div></div></p><h2>Available Apps&#xa0;</h2><p>Here are the apps that are <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Holographic#Applications">available to HoloLens users</a>:&#xa0;</p><ul><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">HoloStudio: A 3D modelling application which can output to 3D printers.&#xa0;</span></li><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Minecraft: The popular open-world game.&#xa0;</span></li><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Project X-Ray: A first person shooter.&#xa0;</span></li><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Skype: The video conference app.&#xa0;</span></li><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">OnSight and Sidekick: Developed alongside NASA to explore HoloLens' applications in space exploration.</span></li><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Autodesk: Used to create 3D applications, such as animated film, video games or visual effects.&#xa0;</span></li></ul><h2>Availability and Price&#xa0;</h2><p>Beyond the Developer Edition, very little is known about the intended price or release date for HoloLens. The company has described it as a "<a href="http://www.crn.com/news/applications-os/300078207/microsofts-nadella-says-hololens-is-a-five-year-project-and-partners-say-that-sounds-about-right.htm">five year project</a>." While this may be true, consumers will likely see a roll-out of HoloLens starting sometime in early 2017, at least in the US.&#xa0;</p>
