<ul><li><keyword id="53964" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Soli-Sorabjee">Soli Sorabjee</keyword>, the <keyword id="2500151" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Former-Attorney-General-of-India">former Attorney General of India</keyword>, passed away on 30 April at the age of 91 due to complications from COVID-19.</li><li>The Padma Vibhushan awardee is most recognised for his work defending people’s freedom of expression as well as human rights. </li><li>Sorabjee is also one of the few well known names in the profession who have openly opposed lawyers that charge big bucks.</li></ul>Former <keyword id="458351" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Attorney-General-of-India">Attorney General of India</keyword>, Soli Sorabjee, passed away on Friday, at the age of 91 due to COVID-19 related issues. “He will be remembered as a legend who added strength to the pillars of democracy. I pay my deep respects to the departed soul. Condolences to the family, friends and fans,” said the Chief Justice of India NV Ramana. Sorabjee had a career that spanned across seven decades during which he served two terms as the Attorney General, once from 1989 to 1990 and again from 1998 to 2004. “Despite possessing a different political persuasion, Soli [Sorabjee] has steadfastly believed in Voltaire [sic] famous dictum that he would disagree violently with anyone but defend to death that person’s right to disagree with him,” said Abhishek Manu Singhvi, a senior Member of Parliament (MP) and senior advocate in the Supreme Court, in a <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/blogs/straight-candid/down-the-memory-lane-reminiscing-soli-sorabjee/?source=app&amp;frmapp=yes">Times of India</a> op-ed. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Work in the field of human rights and freedom of expression" comment="subhead" text="Work in the field of human rights and freedom of expression">Work in the field of human rights and freedom of expression</cmsannotation> Sorabjee is known for his work in the area of the protection of human rights and freedom of speech — an endeavour that eventually won him the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian honour, in March 2002. “If Soli was forced to choose amongst his many passions, I would guess freedom of speech and press would be his choice. His commitment to it has been unfailing and unflagging, never affected by the vicissitudes of contemporary ambiance or the burdens and exigencies of high office,” noted Singhvi. Sorabjee is also one of the few well known names in the profession who have openly opposed lawyers that charge big bucks. According to him, anyone charging ₹30 to ₹40 lakh is in the business of extortion. "If a man is willing to be robbed, will you be a thief," he <a href="https://www.shiksha.com/law/articles/5-famous-indian-lawyers-and-where-they-studied-blogId-8656">said.</a> The man has many a feather in his cap, including being the chairman of Berlin-based nonprofit organisation Transparency International and the convenor of the Minority Rights Group, in addition to being the <a href="https://www.un.org/press/en/1997/19971020.HRCN814.html">special rapporteur </a>to the United Nations Human Rights Commission (UNHRC) since 1997. He also worked on the Citizen’s Justice Committee, which represented pro bono — without any legal fees — the victims of 1984 anti-Sikh riots. The champion for freedom of speech and expression also defended the press in many landmark Supreme Court cases revoking censorship orders and bans on publications. The most recent example of this was lawyer and activist <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/india/news/supreme-court-holds-prashant-bhushan-guilty-of-contempt-of-court-punishment-to-be-announced-on-august-20/articleshow/77539437.cms">Prashant Bhushan’s case</a>. Before the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/india/news/supreme-court-tests-prashant-bhushans-resolve-with-a-1-fine-for-critical-tweets/articleshow/77846880.cms">₹1 verdict</a> came in, Sorabjee felt the apex institution overreacted over a couple of tweets. “The court may at most give a lecture to Prashant (Bhushan) now. Warn him, but not punish him… It is a rather delicate balance to keep,” he told <a href="https://www.thehindu.com/news/national/soli-sorabjee-interview-supreme-court-overreacted-in-prashant-bhushan-contempt-case/article32420327.ece?homepage=true">The Hindu. </a> Sorabjee was born on 9 March 1930 and after studying at St. Xavier’s College and the Government Law College in Mumbai, he enrolled at the Bar in 1953. Zora Mody, Sorabjee’s daughter, is also a lawyer and a published author. She wrote the book 10 Judgements that Changed India. Sorabjee also has three granddaughters — Anjali, Aarti and Aditi.

"...the deponent of the affidavit of the Review Petition are guilty of leakage of sensitive information, which offends the terms of the agreements. Additionally, those who have conspired in this leakage are guilty of penal offences under the Indian Penal Code including theft by unauthorized photocopying and leakage of sensitive official documents affecting National Security,” Bar and Bench reported. The ministry also contends that the petitioners have no authority to produce the documents before the Supreme Court without explicit permission from the Government of India. The Supreme Court is presented with an appeal to review its December 2018 verdict that gave the government a clean chit after accusations of corruption in the defence procurement deal. The petitioners include former Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha, a former union minister Arun Shourie and advocate Prashant Bhushan. Both Sinha and Shourie have been part of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) governments in the past. The affidavit is in consonance with the allegation made by the Attorney General KK Venugopal that the documents were stolen and an inquiry under the Officials Secrets Act was underway-- a statement which he later corrected as "photocopied without permission". India's defence ministry claims the Rafale review petition is a threat to national security

Senior Supreme Court lawyers <keyword id="195903" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Mukul-Rohatgi">Mukul Rohatgi</keyword> and <keyword id="6372817" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Harish-Salve">Harish Salve</keyword> have emerged as front-runners for the post of <keyword id="43805" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Attorney-General">Attorney General</keyword> for India. Both of them bring plenty of legal acumen to the table. 
 
Harish Salve's heavy professional commitment will be taken into consideration before finalising the decision, people familiar with the discussions about picking the Attorney General told The Economic Times. 
 
"I have also read news stories that suggest that I am a front-runner (for the A-G's post). I am sure it has some basis," Salve told ET. 
 
He also said due process demands that there should be a law minister first who can make the offer. 
 
Salve had served as the Solicitor General of India from November 1, 1999, to November 3, 2002. He succeeded Santosh Hegde, after the latter was appointed as a judge to the Supreme Court. 
 
Mukul Rohatgi, the other choice for the A-G's post, said he had not been approached yet. However, he is one of the busiest lawyers in the Supreme Court and need not chase anything. 
 
Rohatgi, considered to be close to Jaitley, has been counsel in many significant cases that involved BJP interests.

Sanjay Khanna appointed CEO of American Express India

<ul><li>On 26 September, a three-judge bench of <keyword id="6354977" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Supreme-Court">Supreme Court</keyword> approved a plan to commence the <keyword id="1057009" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="live-streaming">live-streaming</keyword> of its proceedings to the <keyword id="207034" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="general-public">general public</keyword>. </li><li>Live-streaming will mainly extend to cases directly related to articles in the <keyword id="6363843" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="constitution">Constitution</keyword>, not personal matters. </li><li>There is, however, one condition that the Supreme Court laid down. There will have to be 10-minute lag in the broadcast so as to ensure that any information that should not be shown can be cut out. </li></ul> In response to a series of public interest litigations demanding that court proceedings be live-streamed, in July 2018 India’s Supreme Court started looking into the possibility of doing so. The court asked Attorney General K K Venugopal to submit a report on protocols for live-streaming. At the time, all parties expressed the benefits of such a move. These included greater <keyword id="6434802" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="transparency">transparency</keyword> and information for litigants and their clients, a reduction in crowds as well as an educational component for law students and legal interns. The rationale seemed clear: if India already had a system of open courts in place, why not evolve to a system of virtual open courts? With the live broadcast of Parliamentary sessions, a precedent was already in place. As a result, on 26 September, a three-judge bench of Supreme Court approved a plan to commence the live-streaming of its proceedings to the general public, mainly for cases directly related to articles in the Constitution - which have the most implications for the Indian citizenry. Speaking on the verdict, Justice Chandrachud likened greater transparency to “sunlight”, which he termed as “the best disinfectant”. The judicial authority has asked the central government to frame regulations for this. It is likely that cases involving personal matters such as matrimonial issues will be excluded from public broadcast. The move will reportedly be implemented gradually. In the initial phase, proceedings from either one court will be live-streamed or a select number of constitutionally important cases will streamed on a pilot basis. Thereafter, more and more courts in the apex court will open their doors to live-streaming. There is, however, one condition that the Supreme Court laid down, which slightly contradicts its “transparency-first” approach . There will have to be 10-minute lag in the broadcast so as to ensure that any information that should not be shown can be cut out of the footage. The court will also retain the copyright over the content that is broadcast.

Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi has asked the <keyword id="6354751" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Income-Tax">Income Tax</keyword> Department not to appeal against the Bombay High Court judgment in favour of <keyword id="15492" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vodafone">Vodafone</keyword> in a tax dispute. 
 Rohtagi had said, “The judgment of the high court is absolutely correct and we should accept the judgment and every matter need not be challenged to the <keyword id="6354977" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Supreme-Court">Supreme Court</keyword>. I have also concurred with the views of the chairperson of the Central Board of Direct Taxes.” 
 
The Income Tax Department had asked for the attorney general’s opinion on whether it should appeal against verdict in the Supreme Court. The final decision in this regard will be taken by the government. Such a move is likely to improve foreign investors’ sentiment. 
 
Vodafone has been facing a number of tax disputes in India since entering the country seven years ago. In another case, Vodafone is fighting a legal battle over a tax demand of about $2 billion regarding its acquisition of Hutchison in 2007.

While in recent years the discussion has become more prevalent online, this is a conversation that many divorce attorneys have grown familiar with for well over two decades. The rise of gray divorce can potentially be attributed to a variety of things: people are living longer, both spouses are working and are therefore becoming more financially independent, and the stigma associated with divorce has shifted significantly. Governments have said it, the courts have said it. Even the World Health Organisation (WHO) has said and reiterated this fact. Yet, in India, people are rushing to the pharmacies and hospitals with prescriptions for the drug leading to a crunch in its supply. “People are buying Remdesivir because that’s what the doctors are prescribing,” Pragati Medical, a pharmacy in Hyderabad, told Business Insider. As COVID-19 claims more victims in its second surge, Remdesivir⁠ — currently a drug of last resort against the novel coronavirus⁠ — has become a hot property with its own black market where it could cost, sometimes, up to five times the price. Even Twitter is awash with people requesting vials of the drug to treat their loved ones currently in intensive care units (ICUs). It’s not available further inland. I have even spoken to people in Delhi and Chandigarh, there is no supply.” But that isn’t keeping people from offering up empty promises. In the case of Allied Medical Agency, the coordinator got in touch with someone willing to supply vials of Remdesivir for ₹4,800 apiece, almost five times the maximum retail price (MRP) of ₹900. In the absence of a proven cure, patients would take anything that could possibly save their lives. So, doctors are prescribing Remdesivir despite its uncertain impact.
