Binay Das, director general (DG) of Electronics and Communication Systems (ECS) cluster, DRDO, and many senior scientists and officials of both institutions were present in the meeting. During the meeting, nine sanctioned projects of the ECS Cluster of DRDO were handed over to IIT Bhubaneswar while another 7 projects are in process to be sanctioned with Rs 18 crore funding. S R Samantaray, head of the School of Electrical sciences of IIT said the collaboration of IIT Bhubaneswar and DRDO will contribute to the emerging research and development need of defence applications, creating a platform for 'Atma Nirbhar Bharat'. This form of collaboration will enhance the sustainability of defence research programmes and will be part of the eco-system for nation building, he said. Speaking on the occasion, Binay Das advised researchers and faculty members associated with various DRDO-sanctioned projects to work systematically with proper review and risk management systems to complete the projects in time and come up with unique solutions. He said that DRDO is going through a transformation from technology chasers to become technology enablers and trendsetters. "The goal is now to move beyond attaining self-reliance to setting standards for the Indian armed forces, for others across the globe, to emulate. DRDO to collaborate with IIT Bhubaneswar for AI-driven surveillance, other projects

The fuel will be produced at the Paradip refinery in Odisha, which is known for its advanced technology and strategic location. Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL) will produce fuel for Formula One cars, which are being produced at Odisha's Paradip refinery, said SM <keyword id="20076681" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vaidya" source="keywords">Vaidya</keyword>, Chairman, IOCL, as he announced the partnership with Two Wheels Motor Racing as the "Official Fuel Partner" for the prestigious <keyword id="20243142" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fim" source="keywords">FIM</keyword> (Federation Internationale De Motocyclisme) Asia Road Racing Championship (ARRC) over a span of three years, from 2024 to 2026. This collaboration entails Indian Oil providing FIM category 2 race fuel, "STORM-Ultimate Racing Fuel," across all Asia Road Racing Championship rounds. Indian Oil set to produce fuel for Formula 1 cars

<keyword id="6354785" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="france" source="Orion">France</keyword> wants to be <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>'s "best partner" in boosting its <keyword id="2377476" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="defence-manufacturing" source="Orion">defence manufacturing</keyword> and has decided to share the <keyword id="15204665" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="best-technologies-and-equipment" source="Orion">best technologies and equipment</keyword> in sync with the growing "trust" between the two sides, French Ambassador Emmanuel Lenain has said. Without divulging specific details, the envoy said French and Indian companies are working together on "equipment of the future", platforms and engines. "I do not think any country provides India with the same level of technology. The progress is also due to the fact that we recognise that India wants to boost its strategic autonomy, wants to build its industrial base and we want to be India's best partner in this move," he told PTI. Indo-French strategic ties have been on a major upswing after India inked an inter-governmental agreement with France in September 2016 for the procurement of 36 Rafale jets at a cost of around Rs 59,000 crore. "Defence has always been a very strong component of our cooperation because there is a lot of trust between our two countries. When you want to work on these issues, you need trust because you commit yourself for 10, 20, 30 years," Lenain said. "This trust is the main asset that we have. Defence cooperation has been developing very well because we are very comfortable with India and we have decided that we could share our best technology, state-of-the-art equipment, best-in-class technology," he said. The two sides are now looking at further bolstering the strategic partnership in view of the evolving global geo-political landscape triggered by the crisis in Ukraine and developments in the Indo-Pacific region. "From the beginning, we were the best partners in the Make-in-India policy. Now that India is switching to the Atma Nirbhar policy, we are also there for India," Lenain said. He said France is ready to co-develop equipment with India and share know-how. "Our companies are working together on the equipment of the future, on engines, on different sorts of equipment. It is very positive for both industries," he said. Lenain chose not to give a direct reply when asked about the possibility of the Indian Air Force procuring additional Rafales and whether France was also looking at supplying the naval version of the jet to the Indian Navy. "We are talking, and again, we are very much willing to provide state-of-the-art equipment. Everything is on the table and we do our best," he said. French aerospace major Safran has already set the ball rolling to set up its biggest maintenance repair and overhaul (MRO) facility in Hyderabad with an investment of around USD 305 million. "It is a partnership of equals and it is a partnership to boost each other's strategic autonomy," Lenain said. Ways to expand defence and security cooperation figured during French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna's visit to India last month. In December last year, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said France has agreed to jointly build aircraft engine with India. In 2017, India unveiled the ambitious strategic partnership (SP) model to facilitate joint ventures between select private Indian firms and foreign defence majors to build military platforms like submarines and fighter jets in India. The SP model aims to create a vibrant defence manufacturing ecosystem in the country through joint ventures between Indian corporates and global defence majors. The government has initiated a series of measures in the last few years to boost domestic defence manufacturing. In March, the defence ministry said it plans to procure military equipment worth Rs five lakh crore from the domestic industries in the next five to seven years in line with its policy of promoting indigenous defence manufacturing. India has been one of the largest importers of arms globally. According to estimates, the Indian armed forces are projected to spend around USD 130 billion (one billion is equal to 100 crores) in capital procurement in the next five years. The government now wants to reduce dependence on imported military platforms and has decided to support domestic defence manufacturing. The defence ministry has set a goal of a turnover of USD 25 billion (Rs 1.75 lakh crore) in defence manufacturing in the next five years, including an export target of USD 5 billion worth of military hardware. New Delhi, May 28 () The country needs to go back to the basics and look at building an economy based on local skills and naturally available resources, Rajya Sabha MP and former Union minister Suresh Prabhu said on Thursday as he emphasised the importance of Atma Nirbhar Bharat. The five pillars of Atma Nirbhar Bharat (Self-reliant India) are economy, infrastructure, system, vibrant demography and demand. Speaking at a webinar organised by the Institute of Cost Accountants of India, Prabhu said there is a need to work in a way that people's needs are adequately taken care of and demand of the world is also catered to. Noting that each district has unique traditional characteristics, he said that if a proper study and documentation are done to make the districts self sufficient, then it would have a transformative effect on rural India. "In ancient times, India ws a large economy and its products were sought after. It didn't produce steel, cement or automobiles at that time but it produced things based on local skills. We again need to go back to the basics," Prabhu said. Prabhu is also India's Sherpa for G20 nations. Speaking at the webinar, BJP National General Secretary Ram Madhav said Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave a categorical call for Atma Nirbhar Bharat amid the COVID-19 pandemic and that the government's motto has been self reliance for the last six years. He said India has managed the COVID-19 crisis well compared to many other countries and attributed it to three factors. Prime minister who has taken right decisions at the right time, an efficient administrative machinery and the 1.3 billion people of the country who have shown great unity and discipline in handling the situation, he noted. Out of ₹1 trillion, the healthcare sector will receive ₹50,000 crore which will be utilised to scale up medical infrastructure in the country targeting underserved areas. It announced an additional ₹1.5 trillion to the Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme (ECLGS). This scheme is aimed to provide 100% guaranteed coverage to the banks, non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) and other lending institutions for extending emergency credit to micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and business entities that have suffered due to the COVID-19 pandemic and are struggling to meet their working capital requirements. Further, it has launched a credit guarantee scheme wherein micro finance institutions (MFIs) will facilitate loans to 25 lakh small borrowers for a tenure of three years. All borrowers including defaulters upto 89 days will be eligible. Most importantly, the government will back scheduled commercial banks for providing loans to NBFCs-MFIs. For badly affected sectors like tourism, the government has initiated a revival plan. It has announced plans to extend financial support to 11,000 registered tourist guides. According to Sitharaman, working capital will be provided to people in the tourism sector to kickstart businesses impacted due to the pandemic. Moving on, Sitharaman announced free tourist visas to the first 5 lakh tourists coming into India. The scheme will be applicable till March 31, 2022 or till 5 lakh visas are issued. Here are other key highlights from the Finance Minister’s press conference: <ul><li>The EPF support to employers and employees under Atma Nirbhar Bharat Rozgar Yojana has been extended till March 31, 2022. The government incentivises employers by contributing employers’ and employees' share payable into Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) scheme. This encourages employers from various sectors to hire more workers</li><li>Also, the government has extended Pradhan Mantri Gareeb Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) scheme till November 2021, wherein it distributes food grains free of cost. The scheme was started in March 2020.</li><li>On increasing fears of an impending third wave to affect children, Sitharaman announced a new scheme focused on availability of paediatric care/paediatric beds in the short term.</li><li>North Eastern Regional Agricultural Marketing Corporation (NERAMAC) will be provided with a relief package of ₹77.45 crore for financial restructuring and infusion of funds. The aim is to enhance agricultural procurement and marketing facilities in the northeast of India.</li><li>To boost digitisation among gram panchayats, the government is said to provide an additional ₹19,041 crore for BharatNet. GoDaddy launches new marketing campaign with MS Dhoni to inspire local businesses in India

As coronavirus cases continue to surge in India, restricting several economic activities, the <keyword id="6354424" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="world-bank">World Bank</keyword> may project a steeper contraction of the Indian economy for the current financial year, revised from the previous estimate of 3.2 per cent. In its report 'India Development Update' for July 2020, the World Bank said that amid rapidly evolving conditions, projections made in May are likely to be revised as new information is incorporated, especially as the daily number of cases continues to increase resulting in several states and districts re-imposing lockdowns, and available high frequency indicators show that the economy has not yet reverted to baseline. In May, the World Bank had projected the Indian economy to contract by 3.2 per cent in FY 2020-21, and predicted rebound slowly in the next fiscal. In its report released on Wednesday, the World Bank said that in the current, rapidly evolving context these projections are likely to be revised as new information is incorporated. "In our revised projections, which would be available in October 2020, we would likely project a steeper contraction in the economy," it said. It noted that although a rebound is expected in FY 2021-22, it will take place "very slowly, reflecting the impact of the crisis not only on India's current growth but also on potential output, which is expected to return to trend only over the next several quarters". Junaid Ahmad, World Bank Country Director in India, said: "While the government of India, with the support of the Reserve Bank of India, is continuing to take action to limit the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, there is a recognition of both the uncertainty of the nature of the economic revival globally and the emergence of opportunities opened by the current crisis." He noted that the countries that invest in sectoral reforms -- infrastructure, labour and land, human capital -- and ensure that their national systems are connected to the global value chains, are more able to respond to uncertainties and are better placed to take advantage of any global shifts. "Investing in these areas will give India the ability to navigate these uncertainties and be more competitive as the world emerges from the pandemic," Ahmad said. On the government disinvestment plans, the World Bank report said that given unprecedented financial market volatility, planned disinvestment is expected to proceed more slowly in the near-term. As a result, the fiscal deficit and debt of the central government are likely to increase sharply over the next two years, it said. <ul><li><keyword id="10591" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Samsung">Samsung</keyword> is reportedly looking to move more of its smartphone making business to India. </li><li>A report by Economic Times, citing sources, says the company is looking to produce devices worth $40 billion and export those in the $200-plus range. </li><li>The South Korean behemoth is in the middle of shutting down its manufacturing back home due to increasing costs of labour. </li></ul>In search of cheap labour, the South Korean smartphone manufacturer, Samsung, is reportedly looking to move some of its production line to India. The <a href="https://tech.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/mobile/samsung-likely-to-move-part-of-smartphone-production-to-india/77582922">Economic Times</a> reported, citing sources, that the global giant is in the midst of finalising plans to produce devices worth over ₹3 lakh crore ($40 billion) locally. The development comes as the smartphone-making behemoth is in the midst of packing up its manufacturing process back home due to increasing labour costs. As of right now, Samsung manufacturers nearly half of its phones in Vietnam. It also has manufacturing bases in Brazil and Indonesia. According to the report, the company is looking to diversify its production lines for making smartphones in India under the Production Linked Incentive Schemes (PLI). The company did not respond to Business Insider India’s request for comment. Samsung gets in line beside Apple to set up base in India Samsung is among other smartphone manufacturers like Apple’s Foxconn and Wistron, who has filed an application with the government under the PLI scheme, according to IT minister Ravi Shankar Prasad. There has been a rush of contractors looking to shift bases as products from China come under more scrutiny across the world. India, alone, is the second-largest smartphone market in the world — one that manufacturers cannot afford to lose as India pushes the Atma Nirbhar agenda. Looking for the export advantage Samsung already has its largest mobile phone manufacturing unit in the world set up in Noida, from where it also exports to other countries. If Samsung were to expand its manufacturing base in India, most of the smartphones in the plus $200 segment will be exported — adding to India’s outgoing trade — according to the report. Currently, they only account for 2% of Samsung’s exports from the country. This includes mid-range devices like the Galaxy A31, Galaxy Note 20 5G, Galaxy S10e, and others. Samsung reportedly looking to move more of its smartphone making business to India

The government has sought product-wise details of cheap imports, comparison with domestic prices and tax disadvantage, if any, from industry to curb low quality inbound shipments especially from China and boost domestic manufacturing, sources said. They said a high level meeting to discuss ways to promote Atma Nirbhar Bharat (Self-reliant India), including cut in import dependence from China, also took place recently in the Prime Minister's office. Industry was asked to send comments and suggestions on certain number of goods and raw materials imported from China, which include wrist watches, wall clocks, ampoules, glass rods and tubes, hair cream, hair shampoos, face powder, eye and lip make up preparations, printing ink, paints and varnishes, and some tobacco items, one of the sources said. The other details sought include import surge data between 2014-15 and 2018-19; domestic prices of similar goods that are made here, domestic capacity, imports under free trade agreements, and inverted duty issue, if any. An industry source said that they are preparing their views on all those products and would soon send to the commerce and industry ministry. The exercise to reduce and curb imports from China assumes significance in the wake of border tensions between the two countries. China accounts for about 14 per cent of India's imports and is a major supplier for sectors like cell phones, telecom, power, plastic toys and critical pharma ingredients. The government has recently put import restrictions on tyres, while also making its prior approval mandatory for foreign investments from countries that share land border with India to curb "opportunistic takeovers" of domestic firms, following COVID-19 pandemic, a move which will restrict FDI from China. During April 2019-February 2020, India imported goods worth USD 62.4 billion, while exports to the neighbouring country stood at USD 15.5 billion in the same period. The main goods imported from China include clocks and watches, musical instruments, toys, sports goods, furniture, mattresses, plastics, electrical machinery, electronic equipment, chemicals, iron and steel items, fertilisers, mineral fuel and metals. India has time and again raised concerns over widening trade deficit with China which stood at about USD 47 billion during April-February 2019-20.
