Guwahati, A 'toy story' is unfolding in a remote village in Assam's Baksa district where real and fiction are coming together as a young entrepreneur is making dolls combining local culture and motifs for a global audience. If there is a doll of Gambari Sikla who fought against the British, there is another styled on 'Bodofa' UN Brahma, an influential student leader in the Bodo-dominated region of the state. Then there are fictional characters like Alasi, who has a story woven around her pursuit of higher studies, or little Jarow, who loves to play and eat sweets throughout the day. "At our Zankla Studio, we are making toys with a purpose. We have a range of dolls, birds, animals and even souvenir pieces," Kirat Brahma, who runs the enterprise at Hazuma, told PTI on Thursday. The toys are not merely for the children to play, these also come with a story -- some real and some fictional, he said. "Even in the case of animals or birds, we weave a story around it. For instance, we have a rhino toy, with a back story of how it strays into human habitation during floods and requires everyone's empathy," he said. All the dolls are handcrafted, made of standard fibre used in soft toys and local fabric for clothing, with Brahma also exploring organic alternative raw materials. "Our toys come with the pamphlets as children have a very creative mind and love stories," said Brahma, a graduate of the National Institute of Design (NID) in Ahmedabad. An art enthusiast since his school days, Brahma worked on animated short films and other such ventures, mostly as a freelancer, after leaving NID in 2014-15, and before returning to his roots in 2021. "I had left my place in Hazuma as a child when I started school. But I always wanted to come back, be with my family and work for my community," he said. Brahma, now in his early 30s, wanted to take up solution-oriented projects and chose to pursue design. "Our culture and design are entwined, be it in our dress, our cultivation methods or something as basic as the bamboo fencing around our homes. "Design means functionality and aesthetics at the core, and I wanted to take up a venture which combines these aspects and is easily relatable to the people," he explained. "With toys, we are trying to create awareness about design in an indirect way. Also, we want to give our children the chance to play with dolls more relatable to their surroundings and habits," he added. Brahma also understands the need for the venture to be commercially viable. "We are trying to develop a model for revenue generation. I don't want it to be a research project, to be put in the archive," the entrepreneur said. He said that he started off with his own savings and currently employs 11 people. Orders are taken at the studio or through their website, with the toys sent through courier. "The response has been good and we have got orders from as far as Mumbai as well. We are now looking for additional marketing platforms as well as financial support," he said. Brahma has plans of expanding his toy-making business to include other communities also. "Besides my own Bodo community, I hope to skill and encourage different communities like Rabhas and Garos to design toys reflecting their own culture and tradition. The toy market is a huge one and with the correct strategies, gaining a foothold won't be a problem," he added. Till his dreams take higher flight, Brahma and his team continue making their dolls in between attending to their household chores and farming activities.

The important decision was taken at a Cabinet meeting held late Monday evening that also adopted a New Land Policy, which will give three bighas of agricultural land to landless indegenous people and half a bigha for constructing a house. A communique from the Chief Minister <keyword id="545729" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sarbananda-Sonowal">Sarbananda Sonowal</keyword>'s public relations cell stated that those having more than two children will not be considered for government jobs with effect from January 1, 2021 as per the small family norm. In September 2017, the Assam Assembly had passed the 'Population and Women Empowerment Policy of Assam' that specified that job candidates with two children only would be eligible for government employment and the existing government staff were to strictly follow the two children family norm. "New Land Policy was adopted. Three bighas of land will be given to landless indigenous people. Landless people will be offered half a bigha to construct their houses. These cannot be sold for 15 years," the CMO statement said. The Cabinet meeting also decided to increase the bus fares in the state by 25 per cent, it added. TR RHL

No government jobs for Assamese people with more than two kids, the state declares

Expressing concerns over the <keyword id="301436" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="NRC">NRC</keyword> exercise in <keyword id="6354915" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="assam">Assam</keyword>, the United States Commission for International Religious Freedom (<keyword id="1279363" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="USCIRF">USCIRF</keyword>) has said that close to two million long-time residents of the northeastern state in India may soon be deemed stateless and alleged that they are being stripped of their citizenship "without a fair, transparent, and well-regulated" process. The National Register of Citizens (NRC) is a register containing names of all genuine Indian citizens.The process to update the register in Assam began following a Supreme Court order in 2013, with the state's nearly 33 million people having to prove that they were Indian nationals prior to March 24, 1971. The updated final NRC was released on August 31, with over 1.9 million applicants failing to make it to the list. In a report on the religious freedom implications of the NRC, the USCIRF noted that 1.9 million names of residents of Assam have been left off the updated list and expressed concerns about how the exercise is being used to target and disenfranchise the Muslim population. "Close to two million long-time residents of Assam may soon be deemed stateless. They are being stripped of their citizenship without a fair, transparent, and well-regulated NRC process," USCIRF commissioner Anurima Bhargava said on Tuesday. "Worse yet is that Indian political officials have repeatedly conveyed their intent to direct and use the NRC process to isolate and push out Muslims in Assam. And now, across India, political leaders are seeking to expand the NRC and implement different citizenship standards for Muslims altogether," said Bhargava, who testified before a congressional commission on the issue last week. USCIRF chair Tony Perkins said the updated NRC and subsequent actions of the Indian government are essentially creating "a religious test for citizenship" to target the vulnerable Muslim community, and urged the Indian government to protect the rights of all of its religious minorities as enshrined in the Constitution. In its 2019 Annual Report, the USCIRF classified India as a "Tier 2" country for engaging in or tolerating religious freedom violations that meet at least one of the elements of the "systematic, ongoing, egregious" standard for designation as a "country of particular concern," or CPC, under the International Religious Freedom Act. The India chapter of the report expressed concern that the NRC is "an intentional effort to discriminate and/or has the effect of discriminating against Muslims." Assam has seen a huge influx from other places, particularly Bangladesh, since the early 20th century. It did not stop even after Independence, with a large number of illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, both Hindus and Muslims, settling there. Updating of NRC is a statutory, transparent, legal process mandated by the Supreme Court of India. This is not an executive-driven process, the Ministry of External Affairs has said in response to questions on the NRC. "The process is being monitored by the Supreme Court directly and the government is acting in accordance with the directives issued by the court. The apex court of the land has itself set the deadlines for all steps that have been taken so far," it said in a detailed statement in September. The statement also said that the NRC is a fair process based on scientific methods. "It is a non-discriminatory process, which leaves no room for bias and injustice. As can be seen from the application form for data entry in NRC, there was no column in the application asking for religion of the applicant," the statement said, adding that anyone excluded from the list has a right to file an appeal within 120 days of receiving a notification exclusion, to the designated Tribunal.

"USM, which is for use in YouTube (e.g., for closed captions), can perform automatic speech recognition (ASR) not only on widely spoken languages like English and Mandarin, but also on under-resourced languages like Amharic, Cebuano, Assamese, and <keyword id="1314163" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="azerbaijani" source="Orion">Azerbaijani</keyword> to name a few," Google said in a blogpost. <keyword id="6533" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="anupam-kher" source="Orion">Anupam Kher</keyword> is officially a part of filmmaker <keyword id="30014" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="vivek-agnihotri" source="Orion">Vivek Agnihotri</keyword>'s next directorial "The Vaccine War" and has commenced shooting for the film, the veteran actor announced on Monday. The film marks the fourth collaboration between <keyword id="2057" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="agnihotri" source="Orion">Agnihotri</keyword> and <keyword id="950" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="kher" source="Orion">Kher</keyword> after movies such as "Buddha in a Traffic Jam", "The Tashkent Files" and "The Kashmir Files". Kher took to Twitter to share the news and posted a photo from the sets of the upcoming movie. "Announcing my 534th film! #TheVaccineWar directed by @vivekagnihotri. Fascinating and Inspirational! Jai Hind!" the 67-year-old actor posted. Agnihotri, who attained commercial success with last year's film "The Kashmir Files", had announced "The Vaccine War" in November 2022 and also unveiled the official poster of the film. The movie is scheduled to be released on August 15, 2023, in 11 languages: Hindi, English, Gujarati, Punjabi, Bhojpuri, Bengali, Marathi, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Urdu and Assamese. The feature project will be produced by Agnihotri's actor-wife Pallavi Joshi's I Am Buddha Productions and Abhishek Agarwal via his banner Abhishek Agarwal Arts. Homegrown micro-blogging platform <keyword id="3518161" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="koo" source="Orion">Koo</keyword> on Tuesday said that it has laid off 15 employees, or 5 per cent of its workforce, and not 40 as earlier reported in the media. In a fresh statement to IANS, the Twitter rival said that 15 positions "have been made redundant or removed due to performance issues". "This is completely aligned with the industry standards of hiring and retrenchment. At the same time, Koo continues to hire talent in its monetisation, product and engineering teams," a company spokesperson said. The additional hires, said Koo, will help it gear up for the next phase of growth and monetisation. Aprameya Radhakrishna, Co-founder and CEO, Koo, was recently in London for an industry event for Indian entrepreneurs. The company spokesperson said that she "did not meet any funders or high net worth individuals (HNIs) in London and did not engage in any fundraising activity". Koo has raised $44.1 million to date. The company said it is "well capitalised, is focused on growth and enhancing innovation, driving digital inclusion and attaining 100 million downloads". Launched in March 2020, Koo is currently available in 10 languages -- Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, Punjabi, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Assamese, Bengali and English. According to the platform, it has over 45 million downloads and is actively leveraged by 7,000 high-profile people from across the spectrum. Koo is backed by <keyword id="526777" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tiger-global" source="Orion">Tiger Global</keyword> and early stage investors like Accel, <keyword id="1397792" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="kalaari-capital" source="Orion">Kalaari Capital</keyword>, Blume Ventures and Dream incubator. Homegrown Twitter rival <keyword id="3518161" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="koo" source="Orion">Koo</keyword> has laid off at least 40 people, mostly from its operations and backend teams, and the micro-blogging platform said on Thursday that it is realigning its workforce aceto the current business requirements". The development was first reported by leading startup news portal Inc42, which said that Koo CEO <keyword id="1063285" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="aprameya-radhakrishna" source="Orion">Aprameya Radhakrishna</keyword> is currently abroad, seeking a fresh round of funding. A Koo spokesperson told IANS thatAthe platform is at a phase of rapid growth as it steers digital inclusion for native language speakers. "We recently attained a major milestone of 45 million downloads, growing 10x in the last 2 months. The growth that we are witnessing in our business is reflected in our employee strength of 350+ people strong," said the spokesperson. Koo, which is aiming to reach the 100 million-download mark, said that it continues to "recruit talent especially as far as engineering and machine learning teams are concerned". "Our workforce is streamlined to ensure it is aligned to the current business requirements. As a people-first company, we appreciate the talent and contributions of each of our associates," the spokesperson added.
