He believes the lack of a specific timeline for detecting immigrants allows for prolonged misuse, as it gives people an indefinite period to remain in Assam and potentially establish citizenship claims based on falsified information. He further explained that government records deteriorate over time, making it harder to verify or disprove these claims accurately. <h2>What did the majority ruling say?</h2>In contrast to Justice Pardiwala’s dissent, the Supreme Court’s majority opinion, led by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, upheld Section 6A. It is composed of the representatives of 21 states, elected from the 195 states parties to the Convention. In the ongoing session, from July 23 to July 25, the Committee will examine the state of conservation of the 124 sites already inscribed on the World Heritage List, 57 of which are also on the List of World Heritage in Danger. The removal of these taxes, this will make petrol and diesel cheaper by ₹5 and the cost of alcoholic beverages will dip by 25%. And, the new rates will be applicable starting midnight tonight. "At the peak of COVID-19, we had levied additional cess on petrol, diesel and liquor. Now, the number of patients has reduced... I am grateful to my cabinet colleagues who agreed to my proposal this morning to rescind this additional cess,” Sarma said during his speech to the House where he presented a vote-on-account for ₹60,784.03 crore. He also revealed that Assam’s gross domestic product (GDP) rose by 23.12% between 2016-17 and 2019-20 at constant prices. The annual growth rate stood at 7.71% in the period as against the rate of 6.11% at the national level. The 2016 election was a big win for the BJP. It was able to usurp the Congress leadership which had been in place since 2001 under Tarun Gogoi. However, during the BJP’s time in power the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) has led to mass protests across the state. However, Sarma is confident of BJP’s win. Assam is making fuel and alcohol cheaper to woo voters ahead of the Assembly Elections in April

Despite a united opposition raising objections against it, Education Minister Himanta <keyword id="609183" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Biswa-Sarma">Biswa Sarma</keyword> tabled The <keyword id="6354915" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="assam">Assam</keyword> Repealing Bill, 2020, on the first day of the three-day winter session of the assembly. The bill proposes to abolish the two existing acts -- The Assam Madrassa Education (Provincialisation) Act, 1995 and The Assam Madrassa Education (Provincialisation of Services of Employees and Re-Organisation of Madrassa Educational Institutions) Act, 2018. "This bill is not to control and repeal the private madrassas," Sarma said, adding that inclusion of the word "private" in the 'Statement of Objects and Reasons' of the bill was a mistake. He said all madrassa institutes will be converted into upper primary, high and higher secondary schools with no change of status, pay, allowances and service conditions of the teaching and non-teaching staff. There are 610 state-run madrassas across Assam, the minister had earlier said. Bank erosion caused by the river Brahmaputra is one of the major reasons why Assam gets flooded every year. It means the removal of soil, sediment, or rock fragments along the banks, which results from high water flow. Due to erosion, the width of the river increases and it changes its course. According to the Assam government, more than <a href="https://waterresources.assam.gov.in/portlets/flood-erosion-problems#:~:text=The%20flood%20prone%20area%20of%20the%20country%20as%20a%20whole,prone%20area%20of%20the%20country.">4.27 lakh hectares</a> of land, which is 7.40 % area of the state, has been eroded by the river Brahmaputra and its tributaries since 1950. The width of the river Brahmaputra has increased up to 15 kilometres at some places due to bank erosion, making it the widest river in India. It is estimated that annually nearly 8,000 hectares land is lost to erosion. Bank erosion caused by the river Brahmaputra is one of the major reasons why Assam gets flooded every year. It is estimated that annually nearly 8,000 hectares land is lost to erosion The surveys carried out at different periods reflect an alarming picture regarding the widening of river Brahmaputra which is as follows: <div type="image" title="bramha" msid="91828789" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;River Brahmaputra has been widening at an alarming rate&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> Floods are also caused by human intervention – like encroachment of river banks and wetlands, lack of drainage, unplanned urban growth, hill cutting and deforestation. The dams that are being built are further aggravating these disasters. Government measures to control floods in Assam In 1982, the Brahmaputra Board suggested that dams and reservoirs be built to mitigate floods in Assam. While dams are meant to regulate the flow of water, they can also be beyond the capacity of the channels downstream, proving to be a double-edged sword. The Water Resources Department of Assam has constructed embankments and flood walls across the state. River training, bank protection, anti-erosion and town protection are also in the works.
