926 personnel selected for police medals on Independence Day

Guwahati, Apr 24 () Over 2,650 people have beenarrested across the state in the last 31 days for violatingthe ongoing nationwide lockdown to contain COVID-19 and Rs1.22 crore collected from them as fine, Assam Police said onFriday.In its daily report on the lockdown, Assam Policementioned that 1,328 cases have been registered for 2,208incidents since the beginning of the restrictions.Accordingly, 2,688 people have been arrested for thesecases, it said.The police have also realised a total fine of Rs1,22,10,000 for violating the norms of the lockdown.Besides, 19,371 vehicles of all types and 25 boatshave been detained from various parts of the state during thisperiod.The Assam Police is also taking a proactive standagainst fake news and said action is being taken against thosespreading provocative content and rumours about COVID-19 onsocial media.As on Friday, 85 cases have been registered and 46persons were arrested, the official release said.To stop the spread of the deadly novel coronavirus inthe state, 22 locations in 12 districts were totally sealedand declared as containment zones by the authorities, itadded.According to Assam Health and Family Welfare MinisterHimanta Biswa Sarma, the state has tested a total of 6,459samples for novel coronavirus, of which 35 have been foundpositive and one has died, while 19 have been cured andreleased from hospitals.However, as per the Union Ministry of Health andFamily Welfare, Assam has reported 36 confirmed cases forCOVID-19 so far. 2,650 people arrested in Assam for violating lockdown: Police

A chartered flight carrying <keyword id="6358821" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="shiv-sena" source="Orion">Shiv Sena</keyword> MLAs, who have rebelled against the party bringing a crisis to the MVA government in <keyword id="13126" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="maharashtra" source="Orion">Maharashtra</keyword>, arrived here early Wednesday. Sources said that the flight from Surat in Gujarat landed at Guwahati's Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi international airport at around 6.30 am. Rebel Sena MLAs arrive in Assam as Maharashtra political crisis continues

Guwahati, May 17 () Over 4,500 persons have beenarrested in Assam for violating restrictions during theongoing nationwide lockdown, the Assam Police said on Sunday.The lockdown was first announced by Prime MinisterNarendra Modi on March 24 for 21 days with effect from March25. It was then extended till May 3 and again till May 17.In its daily report on the lockdown, the Assam Policementioned that 2,292 cases have been registered for 3,003incidents since the beginning of the restrictions.Accordingly, 4,513 persons were arrested in connectionwith the cases, it said.The police has also realised a total fine of Rs 2.63crore for violating lockdown norms.It includes Rs 14.66 lakh for not wearing masks inpublic places.Besides, 27,391 vehicles of all types and 34 boatshave been seized from various parts of the state during thisperiod.Action is being taken against those spreadingprovocative content and rumours about COVID-19 on socialmedia, the police said.As on Sunday, 96 cases have been registered and 50persons were arrested, an official release issued by the AssamPolice said.To stop the spread of the deadly novel coronavirus inthe state, there are 26 effective containment zones acrossnine districts, it added.Eleven areas in Cachar district have been declared asa precautionary containment zone, the release said. And now, there's concern that both pet shopsand the people who buy animals from them are neglecting orabandoning animals in their care."According to the Indian Veterinarian Association,the current spread of COVID-19 is a result of human-to-humantransmission, Ashari said."Till date, there is no evidence that companionanimals spread the disease. Therefore, there is nojustification in taking measures against companion animalswhich may compromise their welfare," the release said.In its letter, PETA India pointed out that the AnimalWelfare Board of India (AWBI) had in its March 11 advisoryacknowledged that some people were abandoning their pets onthe streets without food and water and urged law-enforcementauthorities of the states and union territories to take actionagainst such offences.In another advisory on March 23, the AWBI requestedthe law-enforcement authorities to ensure that no animalssuffer from hunger during the lockdown due to coronavirusoutbreak.The following day it also advised that districtauthorities must search pet shops in case animals are lockedinside without adequate food, water, and ventilation andrescue such animals when necessary. Assam police to book people for abandoning animals over coronavirus fears

Guwahati, Jul 6 () At least 220 personnel of the Assam Police have tested positive for COVID-19 so far and of them, 171 are undergoing treatment at present, Director General of Police (DGP) Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta said on Monday. The DGP said that of those infected, one police personnel belongs to his security team. "So far 220 police personnel have tested positive. Out of this, 171 are currently lodged at different COVID Care Centres (CCC). These active cases include 48 with symptoms and 123 asymptomatic," Mahanta told reporters. Among the positive cases, 40 were reported on Sunday alone, he said. Mahanta said 49 personnel from district police, 112 people from battalions and 10 persons from different allied departments are among those undergoing treatment. "One from my wing also turned positive. Though he was not with me directly, we all gave our swabs and results have come negative," he said. Mahanta said that a total of 932 police personnel have been placed under quarantine as of Sunday, comprising 145 from districts and 787 from battalions. "In addition to these, 49 personnel are in home quarantine after their discharge from hospitals or CCCs," he added. Talking about care given to the affected persons, Mahanta said the Assam Police has evolved a system of following up each positive case by way of individually calling them and enquiring about their well-being on a daily basis. "In addition, our dedicated team also finds out the well-being of the respective family of the COVID-19 positive police personnel," he added. Mahanta also thanked Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal for calling him and other officials at least thrice a day to enquire into every aspect of policing during this trying time. Expressing gratitude to Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the DGP said one full wing at the Khanapara CCC in Guwahati has been dedicated to treating only police personnel. "It is worth mentioning that the Assam Police has also prepared a 26-bedded sophisticated accommodation at Dergaon. Another CCC is being prepared at 16th AP(IR) battalion at Bormonipur," he added. Mahanta said the force has made nearly hundred quarantine centres in different parts of the state with a strength of 22 police doctors and 250 nurses to handle patients from the Assam Police "Some personnel becoming positive is in no way deterring us in service delivery, anti-insurgency operations, crime control or other works. Our operations against unlawful activities are unabated," he said. The DGP informed that since March 25, when the first phase of the COVID-19 lockdown came into force, the Assam Police has recovered 1,628 arms and ammunitions, 197 grenades, three IEDs, 26 detonators, two kgs of explosives and 16 RPGs from different parts of the state. "The police have also played a major role in enforcing the lockdown in the state during this period. For violation of lockdown norms, we have so far collected Rs 4.58 crore as fines from the public. Also, Rs 73.25 lakh collected for not wearing masks," Mahanta said. So far, 4,777 persons have been arrested for violating the restrictions and 3,705 cases registered for 3,906 incidents since the beginning of the restrictions in March, he added. Besides, 35,056 vehicles of all types and 34 boats have been detained from various parts of the state during this period, Mahanta said. Nagaon (Assam), May 15 () Two persons receivedbullet injuries on Friday when a suspended constable tried tosnatch the service revolver of a police officer who wasenforcing lockdown norms at a crowded market in Assam's Nagaontown, a police official said.A crowd had gathered at the market to shop for Eidflouting the lockdown and ignoring social distancing norms.The police personnel posted there tried to persuade the peopleto return to their homes but the crowd of shoppers allegedlyinstigated by the suspended constable turned unruly andattacked them, the official said.The suspended constable tried to snatch the servicerevolver of the police officer on duty there which lead to itsaccidental firing. The constable and a woman who was nearbywere injured in the accidental firing, he said.The injured were rushed to a nearby hospital where bothwere stated to be out of danger.The district administration said a high level inquirywould be conducted into the incident.The third phase of the coronavirus-induced lockdown isscheduled to end on May 17 but the Assam government hasapproached the Centre to extend it by a fortnight. Guwahati, May 11 () Assam Health and Family WelfareMinister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday asked police toregister an FIR against the person who posted a fake tweet inhis name, escalating the number of COVID-19 cases in thestate.The tweet appeared to have been posted by Sarma butthe minister said his Twitter account has not been hacked."I have noted with deep concern an altered / morphedscreenshot of my tweet - where the numbers have been changed.Asking @assampolice to immediately file an FIR and investigate@DGPAssamPolice," Sarma tweeted.A screenshot of the fake tweet was circulated invarious media groups of journalists in Assam.When it was brought to Sarmas notice, he said, "Ihave not tweeted any such thing from my account. It's agraphic.
