The concern over rising costs elevated after one of the leading players, Asian Paints, reported a fall in profit due to high raw material prices, which is further expected to remain high for some time. Raw material prices have been pushed up due to the high crude oil prices. Note that half of the material used by paint companies are crude oil derivatives. Asian Paints reported a decline in net profit to ₹595 crore in September, below analysts’ expectations. "Steep inflation seen in raw material prices, since the beginning of this calendar year, has been phenomenal and has impacted gross margins across all businesses in the quarter," said Amit Syngle, managing director and chief executive of Asian Paints in a statement to an exchange on October 21. Paint makers stress over high raw material costs and fewer tinting machines even as festive demand picks up

<keyword id="201354" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="asian-paints-ltd" source="Orion">Asian Paints Ltd</keyword> on Thursday reported a 29 per cent decline in consolidated <keyword id="6431508" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="net-profit" source="Orion">net profit</keyword> to ₹605.17 crore in the second quarter ended September 30, on account of higher expenses, especially input costs. The company had posted a consolidated net profit of ₹851.9 crore in the corresponding period of last fiscal, Asian Paints Ltd said in a regulatory filing. Its consolidated revenue from operations in the second quarter stood at ₹7,096.01 crore, against ₹5,350.23 crore a year ago. The company said its total expenses in the second quarter stood at ₹6,418.17 crore as compared with ₹4,299.12 crore in the same period last fiscal. Of this, cost of materials consumed was at ₹4,570.53 crore as compared to ₹2,646.49 crore in the year-ago quarter, the company said. The company has taken a series of price increases and would look at further price increase to mitigate the impact of this persistently high inflation, he said adding that the company is confident that it should be able to turn this around strongly in the coming quarter. Syngle said the domestic decorative business continued to "move ahead on its high growth trajectory with an unprecedented 34 per cent volume growth in the quarter and a strong compounded growth rates over the last two years". The industrial coatings business also registered strong double-digit revenue growth, led by robust demand for protective coatings and uptick in the automotive sector. The home improvement business continued to scale up in a significant manner, registering its highest quarterly revenues, aided by strong alignment with the projects business, he added. "Performance in the international business was a mixed bag with good growth in the South Asian markets, while markets in the Middle East and Africa were sluggish with challenges around COVID-19 and forex (foreign exchange) availability," Syngle said. Asian Paints' net profit drops 29% on high raw material prices

New Delhi, Jul 15 () Asian Paints sees the near term outlook as "bleak" following COVID-19 disruption, but going forward it is optimistic and is focusing on medium to long term prospects, according to the company's annual report. Paint being a discretionary spend item, there is a likelihood of customers putting their paint requirements on hold. Moreover, the real estate market is unlikely to recover soon and hence the industry would be looking for increased focus from the government in pushing infrastructure investments, Asian Paints said in its annual report for 2019-20. "The outlook in the near term looks bleak due to the spread of COVID-19 affecting our operations across units. However, as we focus on the medium to long term, we are optimistic that our units now have the intrinsic strength and scale to withstand the storm and emerge stronger to launch into a new trajectory in the coming year," Asian Paints said. The domestic paint industry, which consists of - decorative and industrial paint - segment is estimated at Rs 50,000 crore. The decorative paint segment comprising categories such as exterior wall paints, interior wall paints, wood finishes, enamels, undercoats such as primers, putties among others constitutes more than 75 per cent of the paint market. While the rest 25 per cent is from the industrial paint segment, which comprises of automotive coatings, marine coatings, packaging coatings, powder coatings, protective coatings, floor coatings and other general industrial coatings, it said. The company said that the overall demand conditions remained challenging during the course of FY 2019-20 due to the tough operating environment experienced by a large part of the domestic economy. "In general, paint demand mirrors the overall GDP growth in the economy. Hence, as soon as the overall demand in the economy improves, the demand conditions for the paint industry would also witness improvement," it said. The paint industry would also have to wait for the return of the migrant workforce to support the demand-generating sectors such as real estate and infrastructure development, it said. "The government's push on infrastructure development will be critical to spur the demand from these segments. At the same time, given the overall uncertainty in business conditions, raw material prices, as well as exchange rates, are expected to exhibit increased volatility. They would need to be critically monitored to cushion the impact on profitability," it added. In FY 2019-20, Asian Paints reported a standalone net sales of Rs 17,194.1 crore registering a growth of 4.9 per cent. Besides India, Asian Paints has operations in 14 countries across four regions of the world – South Asia and Indonesia, the Middle East, South Pacific and Africa. New Delhi, June 15 () Markets regulator Sebi on Monday penalised an individual after finding him guilty of releasing unpublished price sensitive information related to financial results of Asian Paints through WhatsApp messages prior to the official announcement by the company. The watchdog has imposed a penalty of Rs 15 lakh on Neeraj Kumar Agarwal. Earlier, Sebi had penalised Shruti Vora, who has been working in the institutional team at Antique Stock Broking Ltd from September 2008, for releasing Unpublished Price Sensitive Information (UPSI) related to financial results of Asian Paints through WhatsApp messages. Some news reports had referred to the circulation of UPSI in various private WhatsApp groups about certain companies ahead of their official announcements to the respective stock exchanges. Against this backdrop, Sebi initiated a preliminary examination in the matter during which search and seizure operation against 26 entities of a WhatsApp group were conducted, and about 190 devices and records, among others, were seized. WhatsApp chats extracted from the seized devices were examined further and it was found that earnings data and other financial information of around 12 companies were leaked through WhatsApp messages. Asian Paints was among the firms whose quarterly financial results closely matched with the messages that were circulated in WhatsApp chats. The regulator carried out an investigation in the matter of circulation of UPSI through WhatsApp messages with respect to Asian Paints to ascertain any possible violation of the PIT (Prohibition of Insider Trading) Regulations during March-May 2017 period. Sebi probe found that Agarwal communicated the UPSI related to total income, EBITDA and profit after tax of Asian Paints for quarter ending March 2017 through WhatsApp messages. It was observed that the financial figures of Asian Paints circulated through WhatsApp closely matched with those disclosed subsequently by the company to the exchanges. "The noticee (Agarwal), being an insider, had communicated the UPSI relating to Asian Paints Ltd, to other person through WhatsApp messages, which is in violation of the provisions... of Sebi (PIT) Regulations, 2015, for which the noticee is liable for monetary penalty," Sebi said in its 36-page order. As per the PIT norms, any person who is in possession of UPSI is regarded as an insider. Earlier, the regulator had fined persons involved in communicating financial results of Bajaj Auto, Ambuja Cement, Wipro and Mindtree through WhatsApp messages before their official announcements. Despite the slowdown over the past few years, the sanitary-ware and ceramics businesses of these companies have grown at more than 20% and that too without compromising on the profitability or operating margins. New Delhi, Jun 1 () Market regulator Sebi has penalised Shruti Vishal Vora after finding her guilty of releasing unpublished price sensitive information related to financial results of Wipro, Asian Paints and Mindtree through WhatsApp messages prior to official announcement by the company. Further, it penalised Parthiv Dalal for similar action in case of Wipro earnings. In separate orders, Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) levied a fine totalling Rs 45 lakh on Vora for her involvement in the three cases, while a penalty of Rs 15 lakh has been imposed on Dalal for Wipro. Vora has been working in the institutional team at Antique Stock Broking since September 2008 and Dalal has been working as AVP - Sales in the institutional equity team of the same company since January 2015. Earlier, the regulator penalised Vora and one more person for releasing unpublished price sensitive information (UPSI) related to financial results of Bajaj Auto and Ambuja Cement through WhatsApp messages. Some news reports had referred to the circulation of UPSI in various private WhatsApp groups about certain companies ahead of their official announcements to the respective stock exchanges. In the case of Wipro, Sebi found that Dalal had forwarded UPSI pertaining to the IT company's revenues and profit for the December 2016 quarter through WhatsApp message to Vora and she forwarded the same to several other. It was observed that the financial figures of Mindtree, Asian Paints and Wipro circulated through WhatsApp closely matched with those disclosed subsequently by these companies on exchanges. Hence, the message related to the three companies would fall under UPSI and such circulation of financial figures through WhatsApp has been considered as communication of UPSI.
