Rewind to 3 years go-It was the summer of 2013 and suddenly smartphone makers were slimming down the width of their phones. The lighter a phone felt in hand, the higher was the style quotient. While home bred brands like <keyword id="145729" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Karbonn">Karbonn</keyword> and <keyword id="71696" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Micromax">Micromax</keyword> were investing in decreasing the width of the phone, a Chinese phone maker <keyword id="1188106" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Gionee">Gionee</keyword> came in and disrupted the market. Well, they introduced the world’s slimmest phone, the S5.5, which actually had a width of 5.5 mm – as thin as a bundle of ten A4 sheets. 
 It was enough to bring some twist to the market, which was still exploring screen size and sound quality. While exploring hyper-human features was definitely a part of the R&amp;D of phone makers, slimming down phones became a trend. Soon after, <keyword id="1731609" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Oppo">Oppo</keyword> came out with a phone that measured 4.85mm in thickness. Again Gionee introduced the S5.1, now slimming down the width to 5.1mm from the earlier 5.5mm. 
But soon after they realized, it was all a fad. Slimming down phones can be sexy for a while but those became too thin to handle. People weren’t really keen on using those phones in the long run as most consumers in this sub continent believe ‘thin’ is a delicate thing to handle and the phone may get damaged if it slipped away. Though it was a myth and Gionee’s slim phone was all metal making it tougher but customers didn’t find solace in it. 
 We asked Gionee’s India head <keyword id="409910" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Arvind-Vohra">Arvind Vohra</keyword>, who explained to us what went wrong. The major issues that Gionee’s two slim handsets needed to combat were overheating and lack of space in the phone for slots. 
 
People these days want more memories, and the slim phones didn’t have any external memory slot. Now, if someone is buying a phone with a 16GB memory capacity, they often realize that space is too low for apps and media. Now unlike other phones there is no way the memory can be expanded. The only way-out for the users then is to delete apps and games and keep the essentials only. 
 
From the manufacturer’s point-of-view, the RF shielding that is compulsory for any phone couldn’t be done easily on these phones, again because of the lack of space. Overheating was another problem that these phones suffer from. Using these phones for longer hours have resulted in abnormal heating of the phone. Because there is not much space inside, the heat that is normally generated couldn’t escape. Moreover the metal bodies would get too heated and result in discomfort for the user. 
 
So what does the future hold? <keyword id="6367288" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vohra">Vohra</keyword> feels that style is a major booster to shape up the buying psyche in any Indian consumer. According to him, Gionee sells half a million devices every month in the Indian market. There are three things that determine the buying behaviour – feature function, brand value and price. 
 
As the economy and per capita income of people grow the value of essentials increases. There are a few buzzwords of the phone makers that the customers fall for- Full HD and 4K resolution are some of them. However, no matter how technical these terms seem to be, customers are going to judge phones on those parameters. 
 
There hasn’t been any major innovation in mobile technology in the last 6 months. But subtly, the phones have become more functional, batteries are lasting longer, data became faster and the camera is getting better. 
 
Gone are the days when we used to buy a phone just for the phone. Today’s smartphone that costs something above Rs 10,000 competes on camera space, video space and PC space. 
 
Vohra feels the future of smartphone lies on what you enable on your phone. There is a whole parallel ecosystem that is working. Be it shopping, browsing, social networking- there is a larger ecosystem working. 
 Moreover the free voice scheme is a major disruption being brought by <keyword id="6354504" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reliance-Jio">Reliance Jio</keyword>. 4G was supposed to be positioned as a more data centric product. But now that voice is going free, conversion of a 2G customer into 4G is happening and gradually these subscribers who came to 4G just for free voice would eventually start consuming data.

Gionee’s India Head deconstructed the
smartphone’s future and found that there won’t be any more slim phones

<keyword id="1188106" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Gionee">Gionee</keyword>, the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/51-of-the-indian-smartphone-market-is-comprised-of-chinese-phone-companies-by-shipments/articleshow/56308985.cms">Chinese</a> smartphone maker from Guangdong, has decided to start manufacturing all its phones in India, so that it cam double its revenue and market share from the Indian market. 
 
The smartphone maker has given itself a timeline till the end of next fiscal, in which it would be looking at a minimum of 50% growth in volume sales.

The company also plans to enter into the top five positions in the smartphone market this year, and six to seven new phones would be launched to achieve this purpose. The phones would be priced between Rs 8,000 and Rs 25,000. 
 "We are expecting to achieve revenue little in excess of Rs 4,000 crore for the year ending March 2016, and looking to do Rs 10,000 crore in next financial year," <keyword id="409910" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Arvind-Vohra">Arvind Vohra</keyword>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/future-of-smartphones/articleshow/54424563.cms">MD of Gionee India</a>, told ET. "We want to double our market share and production, and from this month onwards, all phones are being made in India," he added. 
 
While the company had already started making phones in India, it was still importing around 40% of its products as of September last year. 
 
To assist in the new manufacturing process, a new manufacturing unit will be set up in Haryana, for which Rs 500 crore will be invested to make sure that there is increased capacity in the plant by the time it is functional, which is planned in the next two years. 
 Talking of marketing strategies, Gionee has signed two popular faces, <keyword id="6354486" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Virat-Kohli">Virat Kohli</keyword> and <keyword id="6354526" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Alia-Bhatt">Alia Bhatt</keyword>, as its brand ambassadors. It would also be depending upon the upcoming season of the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/sony-set-to-win-in-all-matches-this-ipl-aims-for-rs-1300-crore-advertisement-revenue/articleshow/57489648.cms">Indian Premier League</a> for advertising, sponsoring Kolkata Knight Riders.

Major boost to ‘Make in India’! Gionee set to manufatcure all its phones here

China doesn’t have an official cricket team, but every year during <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/ipl-2017-msdhoni-is-no-more-the-captain-of-rising-punesupergiants-heres-who-replaced-him/articleshow/57234303.cms">IPL</a>, China comes alive. Now that <keyword id="6354312" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="IPL">IPL</keyword> is back with another season, mobile maker Gionee, based in Shenzhen, China, has bagged the principal sponsor rights for Royal Challengers Bangalore (<keyword id="126251" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="RCB">RCB</keyword>), led by Indian skipper <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/small-business/tech/major-boost-to-make-in-india-gionee-set-to-manufatcure-all-its-phones-here/articleshow/57771111.cms">Virat Kohli</a>.

"Cricket and Bollywood are two religions in India. Today, a visibility in the IPL is as important for a company as it is to be there during Diwali," Arvind Vohra, the head of Gionee in India, told TOI.

Oppo, which is also seeing India as a major market, will be spending even more, having signed a 5-year contract for being <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/oppo-mobiles-becomes-the-new-sponsor-of-men-in-blue/articleshow/57518520.cms">the official sponsor </a>of the Man in Blue. Although there have been no official statements, BCCI sources estimate it to be Rs 1,079 crore.

Glenmark Pharmaceuticals has launched the antiviral drug Favipiravir, under the brand name FabiFlu, for the treatment of mild to moderate COVID-19 cases, while Cipla and Hetero have received approvals from the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) to launch Remdesivir under the brand names Cipremi and Covifor respectively. Cipla Ltd on Sunday announced the launch of Cipremi. Dr Sanjay Rai, Professor at the Centre for Community Medicine, AIIMS Delhi, said till date no effective treatment or vaccine to combat coronavirus has been found. "Till date we don't have evidence that a particular drug is effective, so we cannot call any drug game changer till then. With their launch, it will only be clear in the future how effective they will be. Whether they can play a supportive role in COVID-19 treatment is also not yet known," he told . Dr Vikas Maurya, Director, Department of Pulmonology and Sleep Disorders, Fortis Hospital, Shalimar Bagh, said drugs like Remdesivir and Favipiravir were "no game changers" as they were used for other diseases and have now been found useful in some way in treating COVID-19 patients. "It is not as if all those taking these drugs will recover," he told . It has been found that they help reduce viral load but are not game changers, Maurya said. "But yes, it is a positive development as it is better to have something in hand than nothing. There is also a psychological impact that something is being given which could have some benefit," he said. Dr Rommel Tickoo, Associate Director, Internal Medicine, Max Healthcare, also echoed Maurya's views. Whatever studies that have been done on these drugs are very limited so they cannot be called "game changers", but their launch is a positive development as it is better to have something than nothing, he said. "On both the drugs we have limited data, whatever evidence we have is mostly anecdotal. There is no specific treatment that we have and we cannot wait for all the trials to be over as many lives will be lost. So that is why emergency restricted use is being approved," he told . "It is difficult for us to categorically state the efficacy of the drugs, they do have the potential, but we need more data," he said. Noted city-based lung surgeon Dr Arvind Kumar said he does not believe that any of these antiviral drugs like Remdesivir or Favipiravir will be game changers. "If at all 'game changer' can be used, it is for dexamethasone which has shown a significant reduction in mortality and is available cheaply," said Kumar, who works at the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital here. Dr Avi Kumar, Consultant, Pulmonologist, Fortis Escort Heart Institute, said drugs such as Favipiravir and Remdisivir "cannot be called game changers" as they are used as a supportive treatment. "When given early, they can benefit patients but there is no guarantee that the patient will improve or not," he said. "It is definitely a positive development that we will be using antivirals, but it is not a game changer as that term can be used for something which you give and the patient recovers," Kumar told . Drug firm Hetero had on Sunday said it has received approval from regulator DCGI to launch investigational antiviral drug Remdesivir for the treatment of COVID-19. The drug will be available in 100 mg vials (injectable) which has to be administered intravenously in a hospital setting under the supervision of a healthcare practitioner, it said. Asked about the price of the drug, Hetero Group of Companies MD Vamsi Krishna Bandi told it will be in the range of Rs 5,000-6,000 per dose. The drug has been granted approval by DCGI for the treatment of suspected or laboratory-confirmed cases of COVID-19 in adults and children, hospitalised with severe symptoms of the disease, the company said. Cipla has also said that it has been granted regulatory approval by the DCGI for restricted emergency use in the country as part of the accelerated approval process considering the urgent and unmet medical need. Commenting on the launch, Cipla Ltd MD and Global CEO Umang Vohra said, "Cipla appreciates the strong partnership with Gilead to bring Remdesivir to patients in India. We have been deeply invested in exploring all possible avenues to save millions of lives impacted by COVID-19 pandemic, and this launch is a significant milestone in that direction". In May, domestic pharma firms Hetero, Cipla and Jubilant Life Sciences had entered into non-exclusive licensing agreements with drug major Gilead Sciences Inc for manufacturing and distribution of Remdesivir. Glenmark Pharmaceuticals last week said it has launched antiviral drug Favipiravir, under the brand name FabiFlu, for the treatment of patients with mild to moderate COVID-19 at a price of about Rs 103 per tablet. Remdesiver, Favipiravir antiviral drugs 'no game changers' in COVID fight, say medical experts

Gionee, the Chinese phone maker that had a good run in India on its launch, is now planning to seek approval for a single-brand retail licence after the rules have been eased. 
 "It is in process," Arvind Vohra, <keyword id="2083774" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Gionee-India">Gionee India</keyword> CEO, told ET. He also added that the application will soon be filed with the Department of Industrial Promotion and Policy (DIPP). 
 
In November last year, India had scrapped a 30% local sourcing condition which was there for overseas companies that were seeking to invest more than 51% equity in the single-brand retail segment. This move also allowed single-brand licence holders to sell products online via their own platforms. 
 
Presently, Gionee products are sold in India through multibrand stores and 30 franchises that are backed by Gionee. 
 
The company also plans to increase the number of franchisee outlets to 100 by March this year and 250 by the year end, other than having plans to open 200 exclusive service centres in India. 
 
As per Vohra, the company would continue with its plans to sell online, but a brick and mortar presence was also needed as per the requirement of brand building. 
 
"Fundamentally, I believe that first we have to create our brand by focusing on offline rather than online," Vohra said. " "Online is purely on (discounted) prices with no marketing, branding and loyalty." 
 
He also stated that India was a key market along with the home Chinese market and Africa, and that the company may open some flagship franchisee stores in the top 100 malls in India.

Gionee is seeking approval for opening single-brand stores in India

<keyword id="6354923" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vodafone-India">Vodafone India</keyword> has completely rejigged it's leadership structures to take <keyword id="5189" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="competition">competition</keyword> coming from several directions including Reliance Jio, head-on. India's second largest <keyword id="6528808" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mobile-operator">mobile operator</keyword>, Vodafone has halved the number of decision-making people from four to two so as to increase the pace of taking important calls, accelerating its goto-markets strategy and optimizing resources. 
 
It has distributed its operations in 3 divisions- ‘direct’; ‘growth’ and ‘emerging’ markclusters. The company’s strongest markets - Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata/West Bengal, Tamil Nadu/Chennai and Gujarat – will be included in the 'direct markets' cluster. The business heads from these markets will directly report to the company's chief operating officer, Naveen Chopra. Before the re-organization, they were reporting to one of the four directors depending on circle geography. The two operations directors, Suresh Kumar and Arvind Vohra, will supervise other circles categorized as 'growth' and 'emerging' market clusters respectively. 
 
“The removal of a senior managerial layer between the COO and the business heads of Vodafone's biggest 'direct' markets was aimed at greater agility in decision-making and decision translation,” a senior company executive told ET. 
 
“The Indian unit of UK's Vodafone Plc has taken a strategic decision to have these large markets report into the COO to enhance organizational agility and speed-to-market, which reflect the company's core values of speed and simplicity," a Vodafone India spokesman told ET. “The new structure was created to also provide greater involvement of these large markets in the central strategy making process,” he further added. 
 
The re-organizing exercise however, appears to have had a few hiccups along the way, in the form of some senior level exits like Anand Sahai, Vodafone India's business head (Kolkata &amp; West Bengal), and Manish Kumar, business head (Madhya Pradesh-Chattisgarh). 
 
Vodafone has confirmed that Kumar is leaving but denied a comment on Sahai’s Resignation.

Vodafone India re-organizes its leadership structure

Modi’s ‘Make in India’ plan has been received well across various sectors. However, if there is one sector that has readily welcomed the concept, it’s none other than the phone manufacturing industry. We have recently seen how Asus,<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=oppo"> Oppo</a>, HTC, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Xiaomi">Xiaomi</a> and Motorola have decided to start their manufacturing base in India. Now similarly, Chinese phone maker Gionee will invest USD 50 million (about Rs 330 crore) over next three years to make <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=mobile">handsets</a> in India. 
 
The company has partnered global manufacturers Foxconn and Dixon to begin India production. 
 
"Gionee will be investing USD 50 million in the next three years on manufacturing in India. Gionee's 'Make In India' will happen at the facilities of Dixon Technologies and Foxconn which are based at Delhi-NCR and Andhra Pradesh respectively," Gionee said in a press statement. 
 
Foxconn will start this association by manufacturing F Series and P Series phones from the existing Gionee portfolio. 
 
Dixon will be making feature phones and other smartphones <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=gionee">for Gionee</a>. 
 
Both the partners will start production in October. They have a capacity of more than 1.2 million handsets per month between them. Gionee said it will also increase investment in its R&amp;D team in India which will work on software to give a better consumer experience. 
This team will work on the Gionee UI, named Amigo, to make it much more customised for Indian consumers. 
 
"<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Make+in+India">Make in India</a> as an initiative (announced by the Modi government) gives an opportunity to not only take Gionee as brand ahead but also to be actively able to participate in the growth of our economy through various touch points," Gionee India Country CEO and MD Arvind R Vohra said. 
 
"India markis second home market to Gionee after China and the investment in India manufacturing is just another step in a line up of much more to come for the Indian market and customers," Gionee President William Lu said in the statement. 
 
Established in 2002, Gionee sells over 23 million handsets a year worldwide and ranks number 10 globally by smartphone market share. The move will help the Chinese firm bolster its presence in the burgeoning Indian handset market, which is among the fastest growing globally.India is poised to overtake the US as the second-largest market in the next few years. Shipments in India grew 44 % to 26.5 million units in April-June, as per research firm IDC.

Gionee to start phone manufacturing with Foxconn in India

<keyword id="1188106" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Gionee">Gionee</keyword> is the number 3 GSM brand in China and they started operations last year in India. They launched a flurry of phones here, which included the Elife E6 and E7. They recently launched the Elife S 5.5, the worlds slimmest phone measuring 5.55 mm, that will hit the stores by end of Arpil. At the launch Arvind Vohra, Indian Operations Head from Gionee announced that the company has crossed Rs 500 Crores in revenues in the financial year ending 2014.

William Lu, Gionee President was also present at the gala event, where personalities from Bollywood and also Gionee India’s dealers gathered. William had an aggressive, yet confident, stance as always. And when asked, he told the media along with his Indian dealers that he is eying to be the top smartphone brand in India, in the next 5 years. Infact one of his dealers from Rajasthan was asked the same question and he said that Gionee phones will beat <keyword id="10591" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Samsung">Samsung</keyword> and become number one in the state by end of June. 
 Well, we cannot go by the dealer’s word here, but Gionee does seem to be on the path to bring more innovative products to India soon. They are bringing a better version of the <keyword id="6355645" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="android">Android</keyword> user interface called Amigo 2, which will be available on their smartphones soon. This Chinese company is not the only one that has entered India in recent times. Oppo has also launched couple of good smartphone models in India. By the looks of it the top 5 mobile players in China are looking at India as a large market where they can sell their smartphone in big quantities.

While most thought it would just be a simple launch of the new <keyword id="6354485" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="mobile">mobile</keyword> phone from the Chinese manufacturing mammoth, it was a bit more than that. To begin with, a different kind of panel discussion took place where the agenda was an interesting debate on China versus Made-in-China. After that, the new marvel called the Gionee Elife E6 was showcased at the event. 
 Seen earlier at its Shenzhen factories in China, the finished product has finally arrived in India. Priced at Rs 22,999, this phone has modern looks, somewhat similar to Sony Xperia Z. As for specifications, the handset has a 5 inch touch display, 1.5 GHz Quad-core CPU, 2 GB RAM, 32 GB internal memory and a 13 MP camera. The 2,020 mAh phone battery is not removable and one cannot insert a data card to expand the memory either. The phone runs on <keyword id="6355645" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="android">Android</keyword> 4.2.2 <keyword id="620820" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Jelly-bean">Jelly Bean</keyword> OS. 
 
 
 At the event, Arvind Vohra of <keyword id="1889966" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="Gionee-Mobiles-India">Gionee Mobiles India</keyword> revealed an aggressive plan, hoping to be among the top 3 mobile players in the country in the next two years. He also added that by next year, there would be 250 outlets of Gionee across the length and breadth of the country. Slightly aggressive, if you ask us, but if the Chinese manufacturer can pull it off, it might be among the top 5 mobile brands in India (if not top 3) by the end of 2 years.

The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=4G+">4G</a> battle has already begun between <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=India+and+China+">India and China</a> with the latter taking a substantial lead in the Indian smartphone market for the high-speed devices. 
 
The homegrown brands are of the opinion that their rivals have been dumping handsets in the country ahead of networks being properly rolled out. However, the accusation has been rejected by an executive at one of these rapidly growing Chinese firms. 
 
The executive said Indian sellers are having a tough time because the companies they have been sourcing from in China have entered India and this is the reason why Indian firms have failed to catch the 4G market. 
 
On the other hand, Indian companies said that these devices might not even be properly enabled for the kind of 4G services being rolled out in India. Chinese companies are treating India as a "dumping ground" for 4G phones that may not have Band 3 or the 1800 MHz band, said Vikas Jain, cofounder of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Micromax">Micromax</a>, India's No. 2 phone seller. 
 
This is one of two bands on which India has allowed 4G LTE services, the other being 2300 Mhz. 
 
Pardeep Jain, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Karbonn+">Karbonn</a> Mobiles MD, is of the view that Chinese vendors have been dumping excess 4G inventory and playing the price game to gain market share. "They are worried that all manufacturing facilities are coming to India, so what they will do now? These companies have wrongly projected the market demand in China and are now dumping that extra inventory in India at lower cost," he said. 
 <keyword id="6354287" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Bharti-Airtel">Bharti Airtel</keyword> has commercially launched 4G services while Reliance Jio, <keyword id="6354924" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Idea-Cellular">Idea Cellular</keyword> and <keyword id="6354923" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Vodafone-India">Vodafone India</keyword> will do so either later this year or in 2016. 
 Arvind Vohra, country CEO and managing director of <keyword id="2083774" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Gionee-India">Gionee India</keyword>, has different story to tell. He said the company's phones are priced higher than those sold by local rivals and of excellent quality. "Our pricing of devices is much higher than Indian players. Besides, our devices are world-class. There's no question of us dumping substandard products in India." 
 The question arises, why Chinese phone makers are ahead of local sellers? It is because they have made early inroads. Chinese handset makers <keyword id="13722" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Lenovo">Lenovo</keyword>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Xiaomi%2C+Huawei+and+Gionee+">Xiaomi, Huawei and Gionee</a> accounted for 12% of total India smartphone market in Q2, up two-fold from a year ago, as per IDC. 
 
As for 4G phones, Chinese players have have 45% of the market while Indian makers have less than 10%. Samsung, which sells the most mobile phones in India, leads in 4G as well. The segment surged 150% in the June quarter from the preceding one. 
 
The other reason is Chinese companies have also been able to leverage the online model in India. "Key to the success of the Chinese vendors has been popular flash sales through online players such as <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Flipkart%2C+Snapdeal+and+Amazon">Flipkart, Snapdeal and Amazon</a>," said Kiran Kumar, senior analyst at IDC India. 
 
"At the same time, they also focused on bringing more 4G phones at affordable $100-150 (Rs 6,700-10,000) price points, which are left unattended by Indian and global vendors."

The battle of 4G: Is India a dumping ground for Chinese phone makers?
