<ul><li>The pandemic has helped the <keyword id="4222766" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="edtech-sector">edtech sector</keyword> in India flourish. Many players have witnessed impressive growth since the lockdown led to closure of educational institutes. </li><li><keyword id="3395125" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cuemath">Cuemath</keyword>, an edtech platform focused on Math and coding grew 3X last year and is expecting to top that this year. It is also confident of becoming a unicorn by 2022.</li><li>We talk to <keyword id="1390946" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Arvind-Iyer">Arvind Iyer</keyword>, Marketing Director, Cuemath who tells us about the platform's growth story and all that its doing to bring more students to its platform.</li></ul>The last one year has been a blessing in disguise for the edtech industry. While over the past few years the sector had being growing steadily, the pandemic gave the sector just the tailwind it needed. According to a recent report released by transaction advisory firm RBSA Advisors, the <keyword id="11507888" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-edtech">Indian edtech</keyword> sector will take off, from its current market size of about $700-800 million to $30 billion in the next 10 years. While we have seen players that cover the entire spectrum of education, multiple subjects, test preparations, competitive exams, there also are subject-specific platforms that are making their presence felt in the domain. Cuemath was started in 2013 by <keyword id="3395126" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Manan-Khurma">Manan Khurma</keyword> who had just graduated from <keyword id="55119" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Institute-of-Technology">Indian Institute of Technology</keyword> (IIT) Delhi. After graduating, he started teaching, predominantly Maths, to a lot of aspirants to help them crack the JEE. His experience with many of the students made him realize that most of them did not have clarity on the fundamentals of the subject. Resultantly, they were struggling with advanced concepts like trigonometry and calculus. That led to the genesis of Cuemath, that started out in an offline format but has now gone online. The platform, in the initial few years, found growth primarily through word-of-mouth. What started in India soon found takers in other countries too, considering every child, across the globe, has to learn Math. In fact, currently, Cuemath is present in 20 countries, a number that the leaders hope to take to 50 by the end of this year. “Math is a universal need. It’s not a niche need. Every kid around the world needs to do Math. Therefore, every student is our target student. We are therefore creating and enhancing our market. And since Math is a basic global requirement, we get an edge over our competition,” said Arvind Iyer, Marketing Director, Cuemath. Currently, Cuemath’s key markets are across four regions, North America and Canada; the Middle East, especially Dubai and Qatar, UK and Europe, where its business is growing steadily. The startup currently has plans of scaling 3-4X times in the US alone this year. “Cuemath is present in 20-odd countries, and it wants to reach over 50 countries by the end of this year. This plan includes strengthening its presence in North America, APAC, UK and Europe, and the Middle East, as well as entering countries in Africa and South America,” explained Iyer. The platform also underwent a rebranding recently to represent its evolution in the past 1.5 years, primarily its pivot from an offline to an online entity. The rebranding entails a new logo and colour palette. <div type="image" title="cuemathTwitter" msid="83830583" hostid="261"></div> Explaining the thought behind the rebranding, Iyer said, “We want to make parents and students believe in the power of math and its potential to unlock innumerous possibilities. We intend to project ourselves as a brand of consequence where intuition for math trumps marks and performance in exams. Being a company that works at scale across geographies, we needed a winning strategy that will be in alignment with our mission to be a Global Math Leader of the future - to portray trust, expertise, and freshness, globally. This needed a fresh way of looking at our brand, our visual identity, and our communication objectives which are: to come across as trustworthy but not formal, to sound lighthearted but not juvenile, to have academic rigor but not be strict and to be viewed as innovative not newfangled.” It has also refreshed its tagline to ‘Get better at Math, Get better at everything else’. When it comes to marketing, the platform has been following a targeted approach, while monitoring its funnel conversion metrics closely. “We are constantly improving our communication assets to make them work harder for the parent, and get them to discover the Cuemath method. We believe in always adding value to the lives of parents, students and teachers. Everything we do is a reflection of what they seek and find useful. Having said that, our focus this year is going to be on building brand awareness and performance marketing to acquire new students through all our social, digital, TV and PR channels,” explained Iyer. If a recent estimate from <keyword id="50041" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="KPMG">KPMG</keyword> is to be believed, India has more than 3,500 <keyword id="2989202" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="edtech-startups">edtech startups</keyword>. So how does one break the clutter? “I strongly believe that the pedagogy we adopt here at Cuemath is a major factor to give us an edge over our competitors. We are obsessed about having this constant zeal to help the child so that his or her learning graph just keeps going higher. We take pride in portraying math as a life skill which can make children better at everything by enhancing their critical and analytical thinking which many of our competitors don’t do,” he added. Owing to the fact that the knowledge of Math is a universal requirement, Iyer is confident that they will be able to capture the global markets too. Since 2017, it has grown over 10 times, from Rs 15 crore to now a Rs 150 crore company. From 7000 students on its platform in 2017, the platform grew to 60,000 students in 2020. From 1000 in 2017, it increased its teachers count to 10,000 in 2020. “We have very strong unit economics, which means we don’t lose any money on a consumer acquisition but on an overall level since we are re-investing all of our revenue back into growth, we aren’t profitable yet. So profitability right now isn’t a goal, but growth is the focus. The Math market around the world is a 20 Billion Dollar market and we plan to win that market. Our focus is to drive growth and become a unicorn, a billion dollar company by the end of 2022,” concluded Iyer on an optimistic note.

The appointment of ex-IAS officer and World Bank expert <keyword id="3245163" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Parameswaran-Iyer">Parameswaran Iyer</keyword> as secretary in the ministry of drinking water and sanitation, which pilots the <keyword id="6361202" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Swachh-Bharat">Swachh Bharat</keyword> Mission, may be seen as unconventional but lateral entry of private-sector technocrats has for long been the norm in key government positions requiring a certain skill. 
 Iyer joins the league of experts technocrats like Mantosh Sondhi, a Bokaro Steel import who went on to become steel secretary in seventies; Lovraj who was brought from Burmah Shell and was petroleum secretary between 1981and 1983; BEST's R V Shahi who was hired as power secretary by then power minister Suresh Prabhu; economist Montek Singh Ahluwalia who was hand-picked by then PM Manmohan Singh to serve as deputy chairman of Planning Commission; economist Raghuram Rajan who is now RBI governor; chief economic adviser to government of India Arvind Subramanian who comes from Peterson Institute for International Economics; and Infosys <keyword id="44604" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nandan-Nilekani">Nandan Nilekani</keyword> who piloted the Unique Identification Authority of India, to name a few. 
 
Even though lateral recruitment of private sector experts and technocrats in top secretary-level government posts, especially those demanding a given set of skills and expertise, has been upheld by the Second Administrative Reforms Commission as well as in the 7th Pay Commission report, the regular refrain form the civil services associations is that it saps the morale of IAS officers. 
 
"But, ultimately , it is up to the government and UPSC to decide who to hire...if a certain private-sector candidate is very good and has the right type of qualification and skills for that post, they have every right to recruit him," Former cabinet secretary Naresh Chandra said. However, the general feeling is that lateral recruitment should be an exception rather than the rule.The government, incidentally , is on board with this.

Parameswaran Iyer, new Swachh head joins long list 'outsiders' in the government

New Delhi, Feb 1 () The Union Budget 2020, presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday, would help revive dampened consumer sentiment and put consumption back on track, leading retailers said.
 Besides, government's push towards creation of a strong agriculture infrastructure, and efforts to revive local manufacturing along with micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) sector and simplify GST, would help many small traders.
 "Budget 2020 would lead to creation of a new aspirational India, anchored around agriculture, health and education. This Budget seeks to strengthen grassroots of the economy with its positive push towards creation of a strong agriculture infrastructure, which will give a big push to India's rural sector," said Walmart India President and CEO Krish Iyer.
 He further said: "The rate cuts in the personal income tax rates would increase disposable income in the hands of the Indian middle class which will enhance consumption through improved purchasing power. These two positive budgetary intervention together would drive a strong demand growth that drives the Indian economy in turn".
 According to METRO Cash and Carry India's MD and CEO Arvind Mediratta, the Budget would revive dampened consumer sentiments, and announcements on tax incentives on incomes will put consumption back on track, he said.
 Mediratta also welcomed government's move to revive local manufacturing and MSME sector.
 "Tax holidays to startups will encourage existing and new entrepreneurs in doing business. The government's announcement to simplify GST from April 2020 returns will help lakhs of small traders, kiranas and restaurant owners," he said.
 Retailers Association of India (RAI) CEO Kumar Rajagopalan said that it had two expectations from the Budget this year - Ease of Doing Business and a national policy for retail.
 "We are pleased that Budget 2020 paves the path for both in some way. The mandate to states for adopting model laws and decriminalisation of statues are some welcome moves on those fronts. More money hands in the consumers definitely boosts consumption, however, we have to calibrate for non-allowance of deductions," he said.
 While, Spykar Lifestyles CEO Sanjay Vakharia said that there are no "feel-good measures" in the Budget.
 "Beside a few changes to the personal income tax rates, not much is seen impacting the demand and consumption story. The big gun announcements that the industry was expecting to stimulate the economy were missing," he said. KRH ANS

 Bose was born in Cuttack, Odisha on January 23, 1897. He was a brilliant student who went to England to study — where he was also preparing for Indian Civil Services. He got selected in the ICS in 1920, but chose not to work for an alien government. He came back to India at the time when the country was fighting for freedom against the British government. He met Deshbandu Chitranjan Das, the editor of newspaper ‘Forward’, and Bose became the editor later. A year later, he criticised Mahatma Gandhi for cancelling the non-co-operation movement after the Chauri Chaura incident. During the incident, Indians set fire to a police station killing many Indians and Britishers alike. Bose kept moving from jail to jail between 1924 and 1938. In 1930, Bose became the mayor of Calcutta even as he was jailed. He was released after he got sick and needed to travel abroad for treatment.  In January 1938, he became the president of the Indian National Congress. And at Tripuri session 1939, he defeated Gandhi’s candidate, Patabi Sitharam Iyer, to win a second term. However, he distanced himself from Congress after the party’s ideology didn’t match his own. He formed the Forward Bloc to carry on his struggle. He started looking for allies outside India — and for that he escaped his house arrest in Calcutta and fled to Europe again. He met a Nazi leader who is known to have promised him assistance to weaken the British in India. Bose believed India could attain freedom if they fought against Britain during World War II.  The Azad Hind Fauz was formed in 1941 in Berlin and comprised of Indian prisoners of war from Europe and North Africa. In December, Japan marked the beginning of World War II in Asia after it attacked Pearl Harbour. The fall of Singapore during that time shook the foundation of British Raj across the world. Meanwhile, the Indian freedom struggle was at its final round after Gandhi called for the Quit India Movement in 1942. In 1943, Bose became the commanding officer for Azad Hind Fauz — the army which attacked Britishers a year later. His army was able to free several Indian areas including Parel and Tihim from the British. In September 1944, his famous dialogue “Tum mujhe khoon do mein tumhe azadi dunga” (Give me your blood, I’ll give you your freedom) triggered a new wave of patriotism. He established a provisional government of Azad Hind in 1944 with a slogan ‘Chalo Delhi’. Mysterious death and controversy behind it

 Amidst all this melee, just a few years before India became independent, Bose vanished. Japanese Domei news agency said Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose died on August 18 in a plane crash at the Japanese-controlled Matsuyama military airport in Taihoku (now Taiwan). The incident left many Indians in a state of shock and disbelief. Even after 75 years, the controversy surrounding the death of Bose refuses to die down. A few believe that he did not die during the accident. Other theories say that he spent his last days in Uttar Pradesh while some say he lived abroad. Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and the mystery of his death lives even after 75 years

<ul><li>Mumbai, India’s financial capital, will be going to the polls today during the fourth phase of the Indian Parliamentary election.</li><li>Out of Maharashtra’s 48 constituencies, 12 fall under the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and 6 are directly in Mumbai.</li><li>The city is infamous for its low voter turnout even though it did witness a 10% increase during the last Indian general election in 2014.</li></ul>India’s financial capital Mumbai is a lucrative constituency and therefore the Bharatiya Janata Party coalition (BJP), which the regional outfit Shiv Sena is part of, is keen to retain its hold on. For a little over a year now, nearly all of the city is covered in a cloud of dust. Aside from the regular pollution, a spate of infrastructure projects like metro rail construction have been initiated by the incumbent coalition led by the BJP. There is a lot of buzz around elections in Mumbai, which accounts for 1% of India’s population <a href="https://www.census2011.co.in/census/city/365-mumbai.html">according </a>to Census 2011. The city’s two landmarks, Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE), will remain shut as the city goes to the polls during the fourth phase of the Indian <keyword id="3393746" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="General-Election-2019">general election 2019</keyword>. However, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), which includes 12 of Maharashtra’s 48 constituencies, is <a href="https://www.bloombergquint.com/in-the-news/can-mumbai-break-the-low-voter-turnout-jinx-in-2019">infamous</a> for low voter turnout — although, it did witness a 10% increase in 2014 to 52.66% from 41.40% in 2009. It is generally believed that the average Mumbaikar, as the citizens call themselves, would rather drive out of the city for the long weekend than stay back for voting.  Those well-off, residing in growing clusters of high rises in South Mumbai, or SoBo as it is sometimes called, have little to complain about beyond bureaucracy, bad roads, and incessant traffic. There are barely any power cuts in the city. Most people even in the relatively less privileged middle class enjoy running water. However, for every one of those in Mumbai’s towering glory, there are thousands of people strewn, along the long banks of three sprawling highways heading north, in descending order of privilege — in some cases the loss of privilege is just perceived — based on their distance from SoBo. From the suburban buildings signifying various social ranks, down to the seemingly-endless shadowy slums, issues span from unemployment and insufficient salaries, to unaffordable rents and leaky roofs, to water scarcity and a crumbling state infrastructure that has been, at times, <a href="https://www.indiatvnews.com/news/india-foot-overbridge-collapses-in-navi-mumbai-latets-updates-injured-killed-authorities-513954">fatal</a>. Yet, most Mumbaikars don’t vote. Ajit Ranade, one of the cofounders of Association of Democratic Reforms, told the Hindu, “Low voter awareness, voters’ apathy, agnosticism — when the candidate on the ballot does not excite or motivate the voter— and lack of registration in the young category and first-time voters are the reasons for low voter turnout.” This time, some voters in South Mumbai may go to the poll booths but rather than vote between Shiv Sena’s Arvind Sawant or Congress’ Milind Murli Deora, their ballot will read NOTA (none of the above). The citizens in the area <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/elections/lok-sabha-2019/story/why-some-south-mumbai-voters-choosing-nota-1510675-2019-04-26">claim</a> that there hasn’t been any development in their region over the past 24 years. These voters are people who live in the shadows of some of the country’s richest, including the family of Mukesh Ambani. Chaos and colour Of the six constituencies in Mumbai, the most <a href="https://www.tribuneindia.com/news/nation/poonam-priya-dutt-battle-it-out-in-vip-constituency/764783.html">coveted</a> seat is the one in Mumbai North Central where 27 candidates are going to be battling for the crown. Running through the middle of this constituency is the western express highway, one of the country’s widest roads that is choked by traffic day in and day out. To the left of the highway is Bandra, home to many a celebrity. To the right of the same highway are areas like Kurla — once labeled the ‘dirtiest ward in the city’ — and Chandivali which are home to large communities living in slums. The political heavyweights in the fight for Mumbai North Central are Priya Dutt, the Congress candidate and, the incumbent, BJP’s Poonam Mahajan — both from political legacies. The former is the daughter of the late actor turned politician, Sunil Dutt, and the latter is BJP politician Pramod Mahajan’s daughter. Both Sunil Dutt and Pramod Mahan were iconic leaders in their own right who have left behind a legacy that has fueled their families’ political ambitions. One of the highlights of this election in Bandra is the recognition of sexual minorities as a politically important segment. Priya Dutt and Congress member, Harrish Iyer — who is also India’s <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/indias-first-openly-gay-politician-joins-the-oldest-party-in-the-country/articleshow/68799862.cms">first openly gay politician</a> — met with members of the LGBT community to discuss bringing their issues into mainstream politics. The country’s biggest financial hub is also home to Bollywood.As film careers fade, some of the actors jump into politics. The star-turned-politician creating the most buzz is Congress’ candidate for the Mumbai North Seat is Urmila Matondkar — a former actress — who will be going up against Gopal Shetty, representing the Bharatiya Janata Party, who won by a landslide 540,000 votes against his opponent in 2014. Much like the rest of India, Mumbai has seen a spike in communal rhetoric in recent years. Shetty, for instance, has been under the gun for his controversial comments around <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/india/india-news-india/farmer-suicide-gopal-shetty-bjp-maharashtra/">farmer suicides</a> and <a href="https://indianexpress.com/elections/mumbai-north-christians-move-on-from-gopal-shettys-foreigners-remark-seek-development-5693223/">Christianity</a> — and he has criminal charges against him including <a href="http://citizenmatters.in/mp-candidate-gopal-shetty-mumbai-north-lok-sabha-constituency-10891">corruption</a> — this is will be Matondar’s first foray into politics who has promised to push slum redevelopment projects to improve the quality of housing. In Mumbai North Central, which is prone to debilitating floods, the Mithi river that is now made up 100% of <a href="https://www.thequint.com/explainers/mumbai-mithi-river-pollution-problem-explained">sewage</a> remains an election issue one more time. Then again, floods, unemployment, creaky infrastructure, choked roads and lungs have been among the constant concerns in India’s city of dreams. Goldman Sachs' new managing-director list is out, and millennials dominated the class

The title is just one step below "partner," which is one of the most highly-coveted titles in investment banking. The next class of MDs won't be selected until 2017.
