Arun Sarin, the former Vodafone CEO, has made a capital investment in the mobile communications app <keyword id="1106616" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="TrueCaller">Truecaller</keyword>, while also joining the company’s advisory board. 
 
Sarin would be bringing with him his global experience and network, using which he would focus on supporting and advising the company on the overall strategy, said a statement from Vodafone. 
 
The Sweden-based company is known to offers services related to caller ID, spam detection and search to its customers. 
 
"Over the last few years, we have grown at an exponential rate both in terms of business and user base, while also having the opportunity to work with companies like Sequoia Capital, Atomico, and KPCB, who have put their trust in us through investments and board roles," Alan Mamedi, CEO &amp; co-founder of Truecaller said. 
 
"We are delighted to have Arun Sarin on our advisory board providing us with required strategic direction at a time when the industry is going through a massive transformation," Mamedi added. 
 Founded in 2009 by Alan Mamedi and Nami Zarringhalam, Truecaller has recently launched a new app, which includes improved features like a built-in dialer, and has also rolled out a developer-focused tool called <keyword id="3251011" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="TrueSDK">TrueSDK</keyword>. 
 
Arun Sarin holds a B.Tech degree in Metallurgical Engineering from IIT, Kharagpur, and an MBA from the Haas School of Business at the University of California. He is also on the board of directors of several MNCs like Cisco Systems, Ola Cabs, Charles Schwab and Blackhawk Networks.

With the investment, he joins the board of Ola Electric as an independent director. Sarin has been on the board of Ola as an investor and director for long now. As Ola turned to electric mobility, he has invested again in the Series A round being raised by Ola Electric. Recharging India’s EV mission Ola Electric Mobility develops solutions to make electric mobility viable at scale. The subsidiary company was formed when Ola initiated its electric mobility program in Nagpur in partnership with Mahindra. “Electric Mobility at scale is the need of the hour and can help us solve some of the world’s most complex problems like climate change, pollution, over-dependence on non-renewables amongst others. Former Vodafone Group CEO Arun Sarin invests in Ola Electric

Former Vodafone chief executive <keyword id="292871" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Arun-Sarin">Arun Sarin</keyword> could have picked any major Indian corporate boards to be a part of. After all, the 61-year-old, who is on board of corporate mammoths like Cisco, Charles Schwab and Blackhawk Networks, and has in the past worked as a senior adviser to global asset manager KKR &amp; Co. However, he chose two <keyword id="982553" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-startups">Indian startups</keyword>, and would now mentor taxi-hailing app <keyword id="6354720" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ola">Ola</keyword> and music-streaming company <keyword id="2060236" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Saavn">Saavn</keyword>. 
 
Sarin is not only signed on as an adviser for these two companies, but has also invested undisclosed amounts in them. 
 
"It's a huge trend. Everybody wants to be associated with a startup at this point, especially those that are changing the rules," Sunit Mehra, managing partner of Hunt Partners India, which is an executive search firm, told ET. 
 
In the recent past, leading Indian startups like Flipkart, Paytm, Snapdeal and Urban Ladder have attracted big names from the corporate sector and have succeeded. They now have big names that advise and mentor them, and continue to raise billions of dollars in funding. 
 
Snapdeal founders, Kunal Bahl and Rohit Bansal, have Akhil Gupta, who is the VC of Bharti Enterprises and executive chairman of Bharti Infratel. Similarly, Paytm, led by Vijay Shekhar Sharma recently added Neeraj Arora, WhatsApp's global business head, and Ruchi Sanghvi, former VP (Operations) at Dropbox, into its board. 
 
However, for many startup founders, it’s not only about adding glittering names to the board, but also about the connections and advices on strategy that these names carry with themselves. 
 
Decades of managerial and troubleshooting experience comes handy for startup founders, who get benefit while entering new categories and geographies and managing cash and investor relations.

Ex-Vodafone CEO Arun Sarin to now mentor Ola and Saavn

A day after US-based company <keyword id="1042120" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Uber">Uber</keyword> announced a $50 million investment in Hyderabad to set up a centre, its local rival <keyword id="6354720" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Ola">Ola</keyword> appointed former <keyword id="137231" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Vodafone-group">Vodafone Group</keyword> CEO <keyword id="292871" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Arun-Sarin">Arun Sarin</keyword> on its board as an <keyword id="6489950" type="POSITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Independent-director">Independent Director</keyword>. 

	Bangalore-based firm Ola, the country's fastest growing mobile app for cabs and taxies, is looking to expand in the coming years, reported the Economic Times. 
 

	Experts are of the view that Ola is planning to take on the global giants like Uber in India and professionals like Sarin, who have more than 30 years of global management experience, can make a difference. 
 Ola CEO and co-founder <keyword id="1543567" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Bhavish-Aggarwal">Bhavish Aggarwal</keyword>, told ET: "Sarin brings a global perspective and a strong understanding of emerging markets like India. His experience in management and in growing large companies is invaluable to Ola." 

	The former Vodafone CEO would contribute in an advisory role to Ola's overall business strategy that would further drive growth and leadership of the firm, the company said in a statement today.
 Sarin was Vodafone's director between 2003 and 2008 and proved to be crucial in the firm's expansion in the emerging markets including India and Africa. He has also served on several boards including <keyword id="106488" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Bank-of-England">Bank of England</keyword> and <keyword id="6354544" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="KKR">KKR</keyword>. 

	"Ola is creating immense value in the transportation and mobility space in India. The company has scaled rapidly to benefit customers and partners using technology and innovative business models," said Sarin. 
 Earlier this year, Ola bought <keyword id="1428790" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="TaxiforSure">TaxiForSure</keyword> for $200 million in one of India's biggest e-commerce deals. The company is targetting 20 million customers by the year end.

Ola’s investors back its electric company – Ola Electric – welcome it to the unicorn club

The brains behind Hyundai Santro will now join the board of Ola Electric

<ul><li>Ola is restructuring its organization as it heads for an IPO within 24 months, sources told Business Insider. </li><li>Its standalone losses in FY19 stood at ₹1,160.27 crore from ₹2,676.70 crore in the last financial year. </li><li>The ride-hailing company is also putting together governance committees, ethics committee as they head towards an IPO. </li></ul>Ola’s founder Bhavish Agarwal knows that investors on Dalal Street like leaner and meaner organisations. As the $5.7 billion company prepares to raise money from the capital markets, it is laying off people, optimising teams , and adding top executives to put out an attractive offer in two years. The restructuring would mean 5-8% of its 4,500 employees on rolls will either lose jobs or be reassigned to other teams. Less than 250 employees will be let go, a source told Business Insider. Not just that, it is also cutting down on losses as Indian investors prefer to invest in companies that are not in the red. That is work-in-progress for this 9 year old startup. In the last financial year ending March 2019, its standalone losses were at ₹1,160 crore-- which is half of the ₹2,676.7 crore year before. “With a view to become more nimble and have a sharper focus on growth and profitability, we are redesigning the organisation to build a structure that strengthens and leverages our local and global scale and enables faster decision making across all of Ola's group companies,” said an Ola spokesperson. The Board makeover The startup is also reshaping itself to look more like a listed company. It is putting together a governance committee and an ethics committee a source told Business Insider. It is also bringing experienced people into the fold by hiring for top management level across its subsidiary companies – Ola Electric and Ola Financial services.

The round also saw participation from Facebook and existing investors SAIF, Sequoia, Shunwei Capital, RPS and Venture Highway and former Vodafone Group CEO Arun Sarin. Meesho is a marketplace for resellers, which connects them with customers via social media channels like WhatsApp and Facebook. “Our social sellers are small retailers, women, students and retired citizens, with 70% being homemakers who have found financial freedom and a business identity without having to step outside their homes,” said Vidit Aatrey, Meesho Co-Founder and CEO. One of the investors of this social e-commerce startup is Facebook. It’s the first time that the global giant picked up equity in an Indian startup. “With this investment in Meesho, we want to fuel a business model that can result in rapid job creation and the rise of a female entrepreneurial class in India," <keyword id="736869" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Facebook-India">Facebook India</keyword> head Ajit Mohan had then said in an <a href="https://www.livemint.com/companies/start-ups/facebook-invests-in-bengaluru-based-meesho-1560427873327.html">interview</a>. Meesho has over two million ‘social sellers’ across 700 towns in India along with a distribution channel of 15,000 suppliers in traditional manufacturing hubs. Its focus is largely on apparel, home, wellness and electronics items. The startup intends to create 20 million entrepreneurs by 2020. With the latest investment, Meesho wants to grow its community of women entrepreneurs and also reach out to remote customers of India. The startup was also a part of the global accelerator programme Y-Combinator. It had earlier raised a funding of $65 million from Sequoia India, DST Partners and Shunwei Capital.

<ul><li>Indian government will soon direct <keyword id="6354720" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ola">Ola</keyword>, <keyword id="1042120" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uber">Uber</keyword> to convert 40% of their fleet to <keyword id="6354973" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="electric-vehicles">electric vehicles</keyword> by 2026, says a report. </li><li>Ola has already taken the lead in the electric vehicle segment in India. </li><li>Uber has reportedly been experimenting with electric bikes in India. </li></ul>The Indian government is clearly not taking its Electric Vehicle mission lightly. The government has reportedly ordered ride-hailing giants Uber and Ola to convert 40% of their fleet to electric cars by 2026, according to a <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-india-electric-autos-exclusives/exclusive-india-to-order-taxi-aggregators-like-uber-ola-to-go-electric-idUSKCN1T71DU">Reuters report.</a> The report said that for both the companies to achieve this target, they will have to begin the conversion process by next year itself – “would need to start converting their fleet as early as next year to achieve 2.5% electrification by 2021, 5% by 2022, 10% by 2023 before hiking it to 40%,” the report said. Ola might take to this deadline much easily. It has already taken the lead in the electric vehicle segment. The homegrown unicorn has a company under the name Ola Electric Mobility which develops solutions to make electric mobility viable on a large scale. Ola plans to bring 1 million Electric Vehicles on to the Indian roads by 2021. The company has also been raising funds at a quick pace. So far, it has brought in investors like Ratan Tata and Arun Sarin, along with Tiger Global and Matrix India – all of whom are early investors in the parent company ANI Technologies. Meanwhile, Uber too is <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2019/05/09/uber-begins-trialing-e-bikes-and-bicycles-rides-in-india/">reportedly</a> experimenting with electric bicycles and bikes in India. The global giant has partnered with Bengaluru-based bicycle sharing platform Yulu bikes. Uber, Ola might have to go electric by 2026 in India: Report

The funding was led by Bigbasket’s earlier investor Alibaba, along with a new investor – Mirae Asset. The grocery sector which is now buzzing with new entrants like Swiggy. Grofers too turned its finances around, and has recently turned a soonicorn after the latest round of funding in May 2019. The cloud data protection startup raised $130 million in a round that was led by Viking Global Investors. It also saw participation from funds like Neuberger Berman and Atreides Management. Existing investors Riverwood Capital, Tenaya Capital, and Nexus Venture Partners too participated in the round. Druva is a SaaS (Software as a Service) startup which was founded by Jaspreet Singh and Milind Borate in 2008. Its patented cloud architecture enables cyber governance, improves cyber resiliency, and helps customers gain critical insights. Citius Tech The healthtech company was a lesser known startup which gained unicorn status. The company provides healthcare solutions, using technologies like business intelligence, mobility and IoT, Big Data, cloud computing, predictive analytics and data science. The company was acquired by Baring Private Equity Asia in July 2019, which gave it a valuation of $1 billion.
