2019 is set to be a great year for women officers in the Indian army. Over the past few years, women officers serving major forces in the country have come to the forefront, leading many all-male contingents. 2015 was yet another year when our <keyword id="403131" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-soldiers">Indian soldiers</keyword> manned the borders of the country on land, in water and in the air; walked in the line of fire irrespective of personal danger and secured us each day not once fearing for their own lives, that of their wives, children or parents. For the courage, selflessness and determination these bravehearts have displayed for years, it’s time again to hail the service of the <keyword id="112134" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Armed-Forces">Indian Armed Forces</keyword>, the third biggest military contingent in the world, one which always swears by the unflinching commitment towards the nation as the country goes to sleep safely every night. 
 
They deserve not only the highest honour, but a life of dignity more than anyone else. However, owing to the high demands of this job and certain stark facts on the ground, they often have to face hardships not only in the battlefield but also in their personal lives. 
 Today, on <keyword id="3208453" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Army-Day-2016">Army Day 2016</keyword>, we look at the pros and cons of serving the country while being a part of the Indian Armed Forces: 
 
1) Teaches a disciplined life 
Soldiers join the armed forces at a very young age. The first few years are always good because they are taught good values and are made to live a disciplined life. 
 
2) Good till you're a bachelor 
As time passes, difficulties start coming in the way. “We used to say if you want to be happy in the Navy, do not get married,” says Vikram Karve, a retired Naval officer. He meant that till the time one is a bachelor, everything from food to accommodation is looked after at the service. However, once married, there is a huge shortage of married accommodation, which often leads to couples having to live separately. 
 
3) Frequent Transfers 
“Owing to the nature of the job, frequently being relocated usually leads to leading an extremely disturbed life, as both family life and children's education are adversely affected,” he adds. 
 
4) Early Retirement Age (30's for soldiers and 50's for officers) 
Early retirement age creates a sense of insecurity since it is not feasible to complete all familial responsibilities and commitments before retirement. 
 
“At 35, children are usually studying and there are several family responsibilities that have to be taken care of. Unless you are technically qualified, there are no employment avenues outside. Suddenly from leading a dignified life, you are down to a state where you have a family to take care of, but no job in hand. For Navy and Air Force personnel, they are still technically qualified and can manage to get jobs, but for the majority including infantry soldiers, it’s a very difficult situation to deal with,” says Karve. 
 
He also points out that there is disparity in retirement age criteria too. “While BSF personnel may retire at 60 years of age, why are Army personnel being asked to retire so early when the duty of both is almost the same?” he raises a valid point. 
 
5. Modest Salary and Career Prospects 
“In 1991, the pay of a defense officer and the ones who joined the industry was almost the same. We got slightly more. Moreover, the pay of civilian officers was lower than that of defence in the 70s. Everything has changed. Industry packages now go up to crores and our pay has gone down compared to the civilian counterparts over the years,” he says. 
 
6. Ultimate sacrifice (Unlimited liability towards the nation) 
The concept of unlimited liability offers no such comfort or escapist approval in operational responsibility. A soldier’s behaviour has to be contrary to human instincts. Importantly, no formally signed covenant at the time of joining service spells out any such specific need to face losing life or limb as part of the job – it comes unwritten, unsaid, and largely remains unknown outside of the soldering fraternity. 
 
7. Shortage of modern equipment 
Even as Karve points out that Navy has long term planned strategies and therefore decent standard of equipment to work with, the case is not so with the Indian Army and the Air Force. 
 
Retd Army officer Vinay Biala agrees with defence experts when they say that the infantry needs new and more lethal weapons than assault rifles, the carbine, light machine gun (LMG), the sniper rifle and the anti-tank guided missile (ATGM). An Infantry officer himself, Biala is one of those who says, “we are happy to work with what we have”. It’s the generosity and commitment of such officers which often go unappreciated by bureaucrats and the government. Unfortunately, many of the weapons currently used by the troops are of 1960s vintage. The frequent Air Force MIG crashes only add credence to the situation the personnel have to deal with on the ground. There is already danger hanging on them by virtue of the nature of the job, and if there mode of defence turns out to be obsolete, how can we expect them to survive attacks, a question several governments have failed to act on.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>On a recent trip to Lazarus Island in Singapore, I spent a night in a luxury glamping tent.</li><li>A one-night stay at Into the Woods was $290. BI covered the cost of my trip.</li></ul>As a city dweller, there's one thing that's difficult for me to do: rest.But on a three-day trip to Lazarus Island, a small island five miles from <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/everything-you-need-to-know-about-traveling-to-singapore">Singapore</a>, I was forced to slow down. I spent one night in a glamping tent on the beach.Launched in February, Into the Woods is an accommodation that promotes slow living. My stay in the tent was 380 Singapore dollars, or $290.Ray Lee and Sam Wong, the cofounders of Into the Woods and a married couple, said they wanted to create a space for people to relax without worrying about following an itinerary and filling their days with activities.The founders had enjoyed camping with their kids while living abroad in the US and Australia. Despite having no hospitality or real estate background, they were eager to start something similar in Singapore.During the pandemic, they chanced upon a government initiative to promote sustainable tourism on Lazarus Island. Lee and Wong ended up winning a three-year tender to open Into the Woods on Lazarus Island in March 2023. The couple estimates that they've invested almost $800,000 in the project — half of which was from their personal savings."We want guests to go home with the feeling of, 'It feels like I didn't do anything, but I feel like I achieved everything,'" Wong told me.Can it be fulfilling to do nothing? I was about to find out.<h2 id="b2ba86e1-f99b-408a-ac31-c20d6805cc35">I stayed at Into the Woods on a Sunday night in August</h2>Upon reaching Lazarus, a staff member picked me up from the pier in a buggy. We drove past a resort that consists of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stay-tiny-home-remote-lazarus-island-singapore-2024-8">tiny houses</a> — the only other accommodation on the island, and where I spent the following night — past the island's sole convenience store and reached the glamping tents on Lazarus Beach a few minutes later.There are nine tents, including six that can sleep two guests and three that can sleep up to four. The tents are fully air-conditioned and perched just a couple feet from the water.<div type="image" title="The interior of the glamping tent" height="1511" width="2048" msid="113440201" hostid="261" sizebytes="103226"></div>This was no ordinary tent.It fits a queen-sized bed, a cooking station with a microwave and fridge, and has hardwood floors. But apart from trying stand-up paddling on the island's only water sports center, there was little to do. So, this is slow living, I thought.I sat on the beach and took in the surroundings. It was almost 5 p.m., and the beach was full of life. Teenagers blasted pop music on their portable speakers, young kids built sand castles, and dogs ran free on the sand.At around 6 p.m., the last ferry left the island, and apart from the sound of the waves crashing softly into the sand, the beach turned quiet. At that moment, it felt surreal; <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/things-to-do-in-singapore-best-activities">Singapore</a> has one of the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/singapore-urban-planner-regrets-liu-thai-ker-architect-bicycle-squatter-2024-7">highest population densities</a> in the world. It was strangely comforting to have such an expansive space to myself — well, and the 10 other guests on the beach.With nowhere to eat on the island, guests can cook their own meals or pack food. I pre-ordered a barbecue meat set for around $52 from the island's convenience store. It came with enough for two to three people and included a spread of meat skewers and sausages, along with mac and cheese and otah, a grilled fishcake dish.It was a rare opportunity to cook my own food by the beach, so I took the time to savor each bite and take in the surroundings.As guests are encouraged to wash their own dishes, I put the dirty cutlery and pans aside to haul to the communal kitchen sink the next morning.<div type="image" title="Barbequeing meat on the beach" height="2973" width="4404" msid="113440199" hostid="261" sizebytes="367692"></div>With no TV and a spotty internet connection, I was left to my own devices to figure out how to spend the rest of my evening. Thankfully, each room has a doodle book and reflection journal, and I was grateful for the opportunity to engage in some self-reflection.That night, instead of the latest Netflix series droning in the background, the sound of the waves crashing onto the shore lulled me into a deep sleep.<h2 id="ebda3fa0-75c9-4be3-a00b-4f0245360d22">The next morning, the beach was still empty</h2>I spotted a couple who brought their Maltipoo and a Toy Poodle for a hassle-free getaway."Even though we have WiFi here, I don't feel like working or checking emails," Peiling Kong, a financial consultant in her 30s, said."It's a perfect place to escape from the hustle and bustle of city life," she added.Kong is not alone in her desire to get away. Interest in luxury glamping experiences has grown after the pandemic, Mike Harlow, the general manager of the luxury travel agency Scott Dunn, told me after I returned from the trip."Being in highly stressed environments, usually at work, we're definitely seeing people want to experience more expansive landscapes, be more in nature, and get away from the hustle and bustle of busy tourist destinations," he said.<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/glamping-singapore-review-pasir-ris-east-coast-sentosa-price-photos-2022-7">Glamping has gained popularity in Singapore</a> over the past few years, with several companies offering services to set up tents on beaches and public parks. Mandai Wildlife Reserve, which manages zoos in Singapore, even offers zoo-goers the opportunity to try glamping in the wild by a lake in Singapore Zoo or by a penguin enclosure in its bird park — for around $1,300 per tent.In the US, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hottest-hotel-rooms-right-now-are-tents-rvs-glamping-2024-4">hotel chains </a>have also been getting in on the action. Earlier this year, Hilton announced a partnership with AutoCamp, that allows members to use Hilton Honors points to book luxury campgrounds. Similarly, World of Hyatt members can spend points at certain Mr and Mrs Smith's properties — which include several glamping resorts around the world.<h2 id="ccbee4d2-60c6-4300-bf71-b2b3ed9b63fa">The toilet hike lacked luxury</h2>Although the comfy beds and air-conditioned space offered an upscale camping experience, other aspects of the stay didn't feel as luxurious.The tents, for example, did not include an en-suite toilet. Guests have to share a communal toilet a three-minute walk away. It's no hardship, but it is an inconvenience — especially at the resort's price point."It reminds me of my army days," a guest in his 50s jokingly told me.<div type="image" title="Communual toilets at Lazarus Island" height="2313" width="3977" msid="113440200" hostid="261" sizebytes="625940"></div>When I returned from my trip, the cofounders told me they could not build en-suite toilets due to cost and time constraints. Schools in Himachal Pradesh to partially reopen from February 1

Nepal approves Covishield vaccine for emergency use

Biden and Vice President-Elect Kamala D. Harris," said the executive order. The executive order allows the Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management to coordinate any requests for assistance determined by the governor's office. "This Emergency requires immediate action to preserve the peace, health, and safety and the public property of the people of the state of New Mexico," it added. The state of emergency will go into effect on Saturday and last "through the day the Governor's Authorized Representative determines to be the end of the emergency period". According to local media, a fence has been erected around a portion of the Roundhouse building in the state capitol of Santa Fe. Officials also plan to add more fence and increase security in the coming days. Apple announces ₹5,000 cashback for HDFC Bank credit card users on its online store

New Delhi, <keyword id="10387" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Microsoft">Microsoft</keyword> has raised the <keyword id="10598293" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="file-size-limit">file size limit</keyword> of its <keyword id="2033123" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="onedrive">OneDrive</keyword> file storage platform to 250GB, up from the previous 100GB limit, for all Microsoft 365 customers. Support for 250 GB file size upload in <keyword id="2024983" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="SharePoint">SharePoint</keyword>, Teams and OneDrive will roll out by the end of January with general availability by end of this quarter. "Our latest improvement will help increase the upload file size limit for Microsoft 365 from 100 GB to 250 GB  which includes uploads of <keyword id="6448233" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="files">files</keyword> into SharePoint, Teams, and OneDrive," the company said in a statement. The users can take advantage of the new limit. Moving forward, one can share 4K or even 8K video files amongst their teams and clients. Zip files containing a large number of high-quality photos can also be shared with clients or even family members. The use cases of large file sizes can go on and on. According to the company, it has managed to raise the upload limit by splitting each file into chunks, with each piece encrypted with a unique key. "All your files are backed up in Azure Storage, ensuring <keyword id="44117" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="high">high</keyword> availability and performance. You can easily upload and download your large files when you need them, where you need them," Microsoft said. If you use OneDrive for personal use, you can easily upload or your family video album to share with your relatives or upload that zip file containing a large PC game with your friends. Microsoft raises OneDrive file size limit to 250GB for all Microsoft 365 customers

New Delhi, The <keyword id="113282" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Retailers-Association-of-India">Retailers Association of India</keyword> (RAI) has recommended the government to announce the National Retail policy and allow <keyword id="44446" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="retailers">retailers</keyword> to register as MSME in the upcoming <keyword id="6360189" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="union-budget">Union Budget</keyword>. In a statement, RAI noted that the the Indian retail sector was one of the worst impacted due to the pandemic and all efforts are required to boost the local economy and help revive the retail, saving millions of jobs. RAI in its recommendation said that there is a need to expedite the formulation and implementation of the National Policy for Retail Trade. "We believe that such a step would provide a substantial boost to the retail sector and facilitate ease of doing business. We recommend government to announce the policy in <keyword id="8420431" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="budget-2021">Budget 2021</keyword>," RAI said. RAI noted that retail trade is not classified under MSME and it does not come under the priority sector. "Therefore, if a person is merely running a departmental store or a retail shop and retailing in products, not manufactured by him, he cannot obtain MSME registration," it said, urging the government to allow retailers to register as MSMEs. It also made several suggestions on taxation. RAI said that GST laws do not allow for a refund where the tax rates on inputs services are higher than that on output and this leads to accumulation of <keyword id="6354680" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="credit">credit</keyword> with the company, blocking working <keyword id="36749" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="capital">capital</keyword>. It has recommended allowing a refund of accumulated input tax credit accrued on account of input services, capital goods. Further, as per the current scenario, GST credit is leading to blocked working capital. It said that companies should be allowed to use GST deposit or credit for payment of basic import duty. Speaking on the expectations from the Union Budget 2021-22, Kumar Rajagopalan, CEO, Retailers Association of India said: "The retail industry was almost squashed during the pandemic. It is slowly getting back on its knees with the opening up of the economy." "To get this crawling industry back to its feet and start running, we believe that the budget should address two main things that will bring in Ease of Doing Business for retailers -- freedom from various procedural strangleholds and access to funds necessary for growth," he said. Budget 2021: India's retail association seeks a national policy for the battered sector

San Francisco, After <keyword id="6357456" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="huawei">Huawei</keyword> and <keyword id="6359151" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="ZTE">ZTE</keyword>, the US government has now taken on the Chinese conglomerate <keyword id="874458" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Xiaomi">Xiaomi</keyword>, blacklisting it as a "Communist Chinese military company". <keyword id="10598435" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="xiaomis-stock">Xiaomis stock</keyword> nosedived more than 10 per cent in early Friday trading after the news broke. In a fresh list, the US Department of Defense has targeted Xiaomi, which means that the company is also vulnerable to the outgoing President <keyword id="6354484" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Donald-Trump">Donald Trump</keyword>'s executive order that bans the US firms from investing in such companies. The move may force US companies and other investors to divest in Xiaomi this year. According to Counterpoint Research, Xiaomi was the third largest smartphone maker globally in the third quarter of 2020, and India is its biggest market. "The Department is determined to highlight and counter the People's Republic of <keyword id="1334" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="China">China</keyword>'s (PRC) Military-Civil Fusion development strategy, which supports the modernisation goals of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) by ensuring its access to advanced technologies and expertise acquired and developed by even those PRC companies, universities, and research programmes that appear to be civilian entities," the Department said in a statement late Thursday. The Department released its initial list of companies to Congress in June 2020 and has now included Xiaomi. Xiaomi, which for the first time surpassed Apple to capture the third spot in the global smartphone market in Q3 2020, was yet to react to the US move. Most of the other companies on the list are more industrially oriented, specialising in aviation, aerospace, shipbuilding, chemicals, telecommunications, construction, and other forms of infrastructure. In July 2020, the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) designated Chinese telecom companies, Huawei and ZTE, as national security risks to America's communications networks. "Both companies have close ties to the Chinese Communist Party and China's military apparatus, and both companies are broadly subject to Chinese law obligating them to cooperate with the country's intelligence services. "The Bureau also took into account the findings and actions of Congress, the Executive Branch, the intelligence community, our allies, and communications service providers in other countries," the FCC said. Fitbit co-founder and CEO James Park said that the trust of <keyword id="10597985" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="fitbit-users">Fitbit users</keyword> will continue to be paramount, and they will maintain strong data privacy and security protections. The European Commission in August last year opened an in-depth investigation to assess the proposed acquisition of Fitbit by Google under the EU Merger Regulation. The <keyword id="76550" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="regulator">regulator</keyword> was concerned that the proposed transaction would further entrench Google's market position in the online advertising markets by increasing the already vast amount of data that Google could use for personalisation of the ads it serves and displays. Park said in a statement on Thursday that Fitbit will give you control of your data and will stay transparent about what it collects and why. "Google will continue to protect Fitbit users' privacy and has made a series of binding commitments with global regulators, confirming that Fitbit users' health and wellness data won't be used for Google ads and this data will be kept separate from other Google ad data," Park clarified. Google also affirmed it will continue to allow Fitbit users to choose to connect to third party services, saying the Fitbit deal has always been about devices, not data. "We've been clear since the beginning that we will protect Fitbit users' privacy. We worked with global regulators on an approach which safeguards consumers' privacy expectations," said Rick Osterloh Senior Vice President, Devices &amp; Services at Google. "We'll also maintain access to Android APIs that enable devices like fitness trackers and smart watches to interoperate with Android smartphones, and we'll continue to allow Fitbit users to choose to connect to third-party services so you'll still be able to sync your favourite health and fitness apps to your Fitbit account," he elaborated. Fitbit has sold more than 120 million devices in over 100 countries. It has built a vibrant community of more than 29 million active users.
