New Delhi, Women will be inducted as pilots in the Army Aviation Corps from next year, <keyword id="6354416" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Army">Indian Army</keyword> Chief General Manoj Mukund Naravane said on Tuesday. Till now, women are only part of ground duties in the Army Aviation Corps. Women pilots would be flying helicopters to forward locations and be part of operations at the borders, the Army Chief said, adding that the proposal has been cleared. The <keyword id="15141" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Air-Force">Indian Air Force</keyword> has 10 women fighter pilots. In the <keyword id="6355100" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Navy">Indian Navy</keyword>, women pilots are flying the Dornier aircraft and also as observers on board helicopters and P8I surveillance aircraft. Other than the 10 fighter pilots, the <keyword id="6355075" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IAF">IAF</keyword> has 111 women pilots who fly transport planes and choppers. During his annual press conference in New Delhi, General Naravane said: "Last month, I had initiated a proposal that women officers can be recruited to Army Aviation. The next course which will begin in July this year, will induct women for training purposes in flying branch and after one year they will be able to join in operational duties." The Indian Army raised the Army Aviation Corps on November 1, 1986 and it comprises helicopters that fly in conflict and peace zones. The Aviation Corps is critical for the Indian Army as it is pressed into action for evacuation of injured troops during operations or health emergencies in high altitude areas. Army Aviation Corps choppers are also used for reconnaissance, observation, casualty evacuation, essential load drops, and combat search and rescue. The helicopters participate in <keyword id="398565" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="humanitarian-aid">Humanitarian Aid</keyword> and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations across the country. The corps has played an important role in the past in operations like Kargil but has also been at the forefront carrying out varied tasks during the ongoing India-China military standoff in Ladakh.

Visiting <keyword id="78682" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-army-chief">Indian Army Chief</keyword> <keyword id="8457212" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="general-Manoj-Mukund-Naravane">General Manoj Mukund Naravane</keyword> on Thursday held a meeting with his Nepali counterpart General Purna Chandra Thapa during which they discussed ways to enhance bilateral defence cooperation. In a solemn ceremony earlier in the day, General Naravane laid a wreath on the 'Veer Smarak' at the Army Pavilion in Tundikhel, Kathmandu, following which he visited the Nepali Army Headquarters and was accorded with a ceremonial Guard of Honour. At the headquarters, he held the meeting with General Thapa, during which the Indian Army chief was also given a comprehensive briefing by senior officers of the Nepali Army. Also on Thursday, Naravane handed over various medical equipment to the Nepal Army, which included X-Ray machines, computed radiography systems, ICU ventilators, video endoscopy units, anesthesia machines, laboratory equipment and ambulances. Additional ventilators were also gifted to assist the Nepali Army in its fight against the coronavirus pandemic. This follows an earlier army-to-army provision of ventilators in July this year. Later in the day, Naravane will receive the honorary rank of general of Nepal Army on Thursday, which will be conferred to him by President Bidhya Devi Bhandari during a function in the President's Office, according to the Nepal Army. Nepal and India have a historic tradition of conferring the honorary title to each other's army chief since 1950. He will be the 18th Indian Army Chief to be conferred with the title. General Naravane is also scheduled to hold talks with the President later. The Indian Army chief landed in Kathmandu on Wednesday for a three-day official visit to Nepal, on the invitation of General Thapa. He was received at the airport by Lieutenant General Prabhu Ram Sharma, CGS Nepali Army and officials of the Indian Embassy. The ties between the two countries came under strain recently after China increased its influence on Nepal. It was India's road construction to the Lipulekh area at 17,000 feet that sparked a diplomatic row between India and Nepal as Kathmandu claimed the area to be its territory. The road was constructed to shorten the travel time for pilgrims visiting the Kailash Mansarovar. Lipulekh is a tri-junction between India, Nepal and China situated atop the Kalapani Valley in Uttarakhand. After this, Nepal brought out a new political map showing the contested area as its own. India has rejected this new map of Nepal saying it is not based on historical facts or evidence. Indian and Nepal discuss enhancing bilateral defence cooperation during Indian Army Chief Naravane's three-day visit

NEW DELHI: The <keyword id="6354977" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Supreme-Court">Supreme Court</keyword> on Thursday agreed to hear a petition against appointment of <keyword id="163250" type="POSITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Lt-General">Lt General</keyword> <keyword id="6569422" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Dalbir-Singh-Suhag">Dalbir Singh Suhag</keyword> as next <keyword id="6436694" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Army-Chief">Army chief</keyword>. 
 
The petition, filed by Lt General Ravi Dastane, will be heard in July. 
 Dastane said he has already challenged Suhag’s selection as <keyword id="163613" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Army-commander">Army commander</keyword>. 
 
If that selection is set aside, Suhag’s appointment as next Army chief would also be struck down, he said. 
 
Explaining the urgency behind seeking stay on Suhag's appointment, Dastane said he is retiring on August 31 and Suhag’s appointment as Army chief takes effect from August 1.

Testifying before the House Armed Services Committee, <keyword id="15350" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Army">Army</keyword> Chief of Staff Gen. Ray Odierno, and Army Secretary John McHugh took a barrage of criticism from Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.) about a computer intelligence system known as <a href="http://www.raytheon.com/capabilities/products/dcgs/">DCGS</a>.
"We've talked in the past ... about this Distributed Common Ground System, it's the Army's intelligence gathering software product that is out there," Hunter said. " ... you still have units that are requesting the ... product that are not getting it."
Hunter continued, criticizing the system and advocating "off-the-shelf products" already existent in the private sector. But what really miffed the Army leaders was what he did next: he got up to leave.
“May we respond? I think I heard a question,” McHugh asked the committee chair. “Well, I don’t want to respond if the gentleman’s going to leave. Would you care to hear a brief response?”
But Odierno had enough.
"First off, I object to this," Odierno said. "I'm tired of somebody telling me I don't care about our soldiers, and we don't respond. Everybody on my staff cares about it, and they do all they can to help," before going on to criticize Hunter's use of an "anecdotal incident."
"You have a very powerful personality but that doesn't refute the facts that you have gaps in the capability," Hunter said before he was cut off by Odierno.
The exchange continued, with the pair sparring over not being allowed to respond, with Odierno telling Hunter, "you weren't going to let us say anything."
"Well, you — you’re right, but I have that prerogative when I’m sitting up here," Hunter said.
"Well, I have a prerogative too," Odierno said, "and that’s to answer a question or an accusation when it’s made."

Army Chief Of Staff Blows Up At A California Congressman

General Prayuth Chan-ocha said "the door was neither open nor closed" when asked whether a coup would happen, a marked shift from the strong denials the armed forces routinely make.
"Anything can happen," Prayuth told a news conference in Bangkok. "It depends on the situation ... we are trying to do the right thing, in a peaceful way and we urge negotiations."
The general's comments represent a major setback at a critical time for Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, who is under attack from opponents determined to overthrow her and weaken the influence of her self-exiled brother, former premier Thaksin Shinawatra.
She has called an election for February 2, which her Puea Thai Party is almost certain to win, but anti-government protesters have vowed to stop the poll. The Election Commission (EC) also asked for a postponement after violent clashes on Thursday.
The political deadlock and violence have become all too familiar in Thailand, where the military have staged or attempted to stage 18 coups in 81 years of democracy.
Southeast Asia's second-biggest economy is divided broadly between those who love Thaksin, such as the rural poor in the populous north and northeast, and those who loathe him, a group that includes Bangkok's conservative elite and middle class.
The events of the past two days suggest powerful forces could again be at work to undermine Thaksin's populist political machine, which has won every election since 2001.
Yingluck has been in her northern strongholds this past week rallying support ahead of a ballot she is determined will go ahead, aware her caretaker government could be exposed to an escalation of street protests, legal challenges and the possibility of a military overthrow.
Rumors of a coup have swirled in recent weeks. Three sources with ties to the military have told Reuters recently that two of Prayuth's still-influential predecessors had expressed their support for the anti-government protest movement.
<h3>HERO AND VILLAIN</h3>
The protesters want the suspension of what they say is a fragile democracy subverted by Thaksin to enhance the business empires of his family and friends, using cheap health care, micro-loans and state subsidies to buy off the poor.
They draw strength from the south, as well as Bangkok's establishment of old-money families, the royalist bureaucracy and generals who despise Thaksin's rise.
Fifty-three parties have signed up to run in the polls. The EC said on Friday it would seek talks with the government and demonstrators to break the deadlock.
"We expect to have a solution before the New Year comes," commissioner Somchai Srisuthiyakorn told reporters.
The government was initially counting on the army for its cooperation, even though it overthrew Thaksin in 2006.
Deputy Prime Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul asked the military on Friday to provide security for election candidates and voters but there has been no public response.
Instead of an election, the protesters want an appointed "people's council" to replace Yingluck and introduce political reforms before any future vote.
Their wider aim is to neutralize the power of the Shinawatra family. Muddying the waters further, the main opposition Democratic Party says it will boycott the vote.
The weeks of protests had been largely peaceful, even though as many as 200,000 people have been on the streets. A hard core of about 500 protesters, some carrying knives and slingshots, were behind Thursday's violence.
The Public Health Ministry said two people, including a policeman, had been killed by an unidentified gunman and 153 people wounded, 39 of them police, in Thursday's clashes.
The crisis is starting to drag on the economy. The Thai baht plumbed close to four-year lows this week and Thai stocks fell two percent after Thursday's violence.
The Finance Ministry cut its growth forecast for 2013 on Thursday, due in part to the political unrest, and 2014 forecasts are also in jeopardy.
The first two years of Yingluck's government had been relatively smooth until a blunder by Puea Thai in November, when it tried to push through an unpopular amnesty bill that would have exonerated Thaksin from a 2008 graft conviction he says was politically motivated.

Thai Crisis Deepens As Army Chief Hints At Possible Coup

New Delhi, Indian Army Chief General Manoj Mukund Naravane on Wednesday met troops deployed in harsh winter conditions at forward locations at <keyword id="9262087" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-line-of-actual-control">the Line of Actual Control</keyword> and reviewed the prevailing <keyword id="594003" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tense-situation">tense situation</keyword> with <keyword id="1334" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="China">China</keyword>. General Naravane also reviewed troops preparedness at the forward location. General Naravane reached Leh for a day visit to Fire and Fury Corps. From Leh, he went to forward locations deployed few metres away from Chinese troops at Line of Actual Control (LAC). "He also visited Rechin La and undertook a first-hand assessment of the situation along the LAC," said a <keyword id="9576480" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="senior-indian-army-officer">senior Indian Army officer</keyword>. General Naravane also undertook on the spot inspection of the state of habitat of troops on the forward line of defences at Rechin La. He also visited forward base Tara and interacted with the local commanders and troops and distributed sweets and cakes to soldiers on the eve of Christmas. Temperatures at critical mountain peaks and passes along the disputed India-China border have dropped to minus 20 Degrees Celsius throwing up a fresh challenge to the thousands of troops amassed by both sides. India and China are engaged in a nine-month-long standoff at the LAC. Despite several levels of dialogue, there has not been any breakthrough and the deadlock continues. Indian Army chief visits forward locations and reviewed tense situation with China

Army chief Gen MM Naravane will arrive in Nepal on Wednesday on a three-day crucial visit, which Indian officials here say will deepen the long-standing bonds of friendship between the two armies and provide an opportunity for both sides to explore avenues to further strengthen bilateral defence partnership for mutual benefit. Naravane's visit is largely aimed at resetting relations with the Himalayan nation after the ties came under severe strain following a bitter border row. Gen Naravane is visiting Nepal at the official invitation of Nepal Army chief Gen Purnachandra Thapa. Indian Embassy spokesperson Naveen Kumar said that Gen Naravane's visit "will deepen the long-standing and customary bonds of friendship between the two armies." "His visit will provide an opportunity for both sides to discuss the bilateral defence partnership and explore avenues to further strengthen it for mutual benefit." Gen Naravane will pay homage at the martyrs' memorial at the Army Pavilion on Thursday morning and receive a guard of honour at the Nepal Army headquarters, according to Nepal Army sources. He will hold formal talks with his Nepalese counterpart at the Nepal Army headquarters on Thursday. Mutual interests between the two armies and bilateral relations will mainly feature during the talk, Nepal Army sources said. The <keyword id="78682" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-army-chief">Indian Army chief</keyword> will also gift an ambulance and medical equipment for a mobile field hospital to be operated by the Nepal Army. He will also hold interaction with senior officials at the Nepal Army headquarters. I am sure this visit will go a long way in strengthening the bonds of friendship that the two armies cherish," Gen Naravane said in New Delhi ahead of the visit. The Chief of Army Staff said he was also grateful for the opportunity to call on Prime Minister Oli. India's decision to send the Army Chief to Nepal to reset the ties is seen as part of a larger exercise by New Delhi to rejuvenate relations with Myanmar, the Maldives, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bhutan and Afghanistan in the wake of greater efforts by China to expand its influence in the region. The ties between the two countries came under strain after Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated an 80-km-long strategically crucial road connecting the Lipulekh pass with Dharchula in Uttarakhand on May 8. Nepal protested the inauguration of the road claiming that it passed through its territory. Days later, Nepal came out with the new map showing Lipulekh, Kalapani and Limpiyadhura as its territories. After Nepal released the map, India reacted sharply, calling it a "unilateral act" and cautioning Kathmandu that such "artificial enlargement" of territorial claims will not be acceptable to it. In June, Nepal's Parliament approved the new political map of the country featuring areas which India maintains belong to it. In its reaction after Nepal's lower house of parliament approved the bill, India termed as untenable the "artificial enlargement" of territorial claims by the neighbouring country. India said Nepal's action violates an understanding reached between the two countries to resolve the boundary issues through talks. Nepal Prime Minister Oli has been asserting that Lipulekh, Kalapani and Limpiyadhura belong to Nepal and vowed to "reclaim" them from India. The Lipulekh pass is a far western point near Kalapani, a disputed border area between Nepal and India. Both India and Nepal claim Kalapani as an integral part of their territory - India as part of Uttarakhand's Pithoragarh district and Nepal as part of Dharchula district.

Indian Army Chief Gen MM Naravane to begin three day Nepal visit today amid border tensions with China

Army chief general <keyword id="7912696" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="M-M-Naravane">M M Naravane</keyword> on Tuesday said that he was hopeful that the Indian and Chinese militaries will be able to reach an agreement on disengagement and de-escalation of tension in eastern Ladakh. In an address at a seminar, the army chief said senior military commanders of India and China are holding talks to iron out modalities for deescalation of tension in eastern Ladakh. "We are hopeful of reaching an agreement which is mutually acceptable and is really beneficial in keeping with the overarching policy guidelines," he said. The chief of Army staff also said that the situation in eastern Ladakh is quite stable. General Naravane was speaking at a conclave organised by Bharatshakti.in, a portal on defence and military issues. Referring to Indian troops deployed in the high-altitude region, he said they are equipped with appropriate clothing and weapons, and added that there is no shortage whatsoever. India and China are likely to hold another round of military talks to discuss specific proposals for a possible breakthrough in the long-negotiated disengagement process in eastern Ladakh. The eighth round of Corps Commander-level talks on Friday had broadly discussed disengagement of troops from specific friction points and both sides would like to take forward the "constructive" dialogue to the next round with detailed deliberations, sources had said. In a joint statement released earlier on Friday, the <keyword id="6354416" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Army">Indian Army</keyword> and the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) described the talks as candid, in-depth and constructive. The statement said it was agreed to earnestly implement the important consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries and ensure that the frontline troops exercise restraint and avoid misunderstanding and miscalculation. Nearly 50,000 troops of the Indian Army are currently deployed in a high state of combat readiness in various mountainous locations in eastern Ladakh in sub-zero conditions as multiple rounds of talks between the two sides have not yielded any concrete outcome yet to resolve the standoff. China has also deployed an equal number of troops, according to officials. The standoff between the two sides erupted in early May. Indian Army chief Naravane is hopeful of de-escalation of tensions between India and China in eastern Ladakh

New Delhi, The latest diplomatic row between India and Canada is not going to impact the ongoing bilateral military engagement and the matter has to be resolved at the political level, Canada's Deputy Army Chief Major General Peter <keyword id="6372795" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="scott" source="Orion">Scott</keyword> said on Tuesday. Scott is leading a Canadian delegation at the <keyword id="1551039" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="indo-pacific" source="Orion">Indo-Pacific</keyword> Army Chiefs' Conference (IPACC) here that is being attended by military delegations from over 30 countries. "To the best of my knowledge at this time, that is not going to have an impact on us. We leave the matter at hand to the political level to try and resolve," he told PTI. "We are happy to be here and we do not see the issue clouding matters at this point at all," Major General Scott said.  “You have to be able, as we did successfully in Libya, to hit ground targets," <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/defence/10186843/Army-chief-We-risk-war-with-Syria.html">General David Richards told The Telegraph</a>. "If you want to have the material effect that people seek [i.e. Assad's ouster] ... you would be going to war if that is what you want to do.”
Britain's most senior <keyword id="6359526" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Military">military</keyword> officer explained that the West would need to destroy the Syrian government’s air defenses, tanks, and armored personnel carriers.
The general's comments came the same day his U.S. counterpart, U.S. Army General Martin Dempsey, told a Senate committee that the Obama administration is <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/dempsey-comments-on-syrian-war-2013-7#ixzz2ZUucNvuJ">considering the use of military force in Syria</a>.
The four star general, who is America's top military officer, said that he provided President Barack Obama with <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/us-military-options-in-syria-2013-4#ixzz2ZPWAmihd">options for the use of force</a> in Syria, including "kinetic strikes," and that the issue "is under deliberation inside of our agencies of government."
"Senator, I am in favor of building a moderate opposition and supporting it," he said. "The question whether to support it with direct kinetic strikes ... is a decision for our elected officials, not for the senior military leader of the nation."
Thus the West is at a crossroads when it comes to Syria. Britain has <a href="http://uk.reuters.com/article/2013/07/18/uk-syria-crisis-britain-idUKBRE96H16020130718">abandoned plans to arm Syrian rebels</a>, noting that it won't make a significant impact on the outcome, and similar plans have <a href="http://articles.washingtonpost.com/2013-07-10/world/40490277_1_syrian-rebels-obama-administration-arms">stalled in the U.S.</a>
“That is rightly a huge and important decision," UK Army chief Richards said. "There are many arguments for doing so but there are many arguments for not doing so too.”
In March Dempsey implied military force <a href="http://www.krcrtv.com/news/U-S-military-considers-its-options-in-Syria/-/14286064/19392120/-/view/print/-/2v2ljj/-/index.html">would be a bad idea:</a> "I don't think at this point I can see a military option that would create an understandable outcome. And until I do, it would be my advice to proceed cautiously."

 "Proper channels are in place for jawans to put across their grievances...if they aren't satisfied with action taken, they can contact me directly," General <keyword id="6381658" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rawat">Rawat</keyword> during an address on Army Day today. 
 
"You will be found guilty for any action you take outside these channels and will also be liable for punishment," the General said. General Rawat first talked about the grievances issue on Friday, after a jawan, <keyword id="4058398" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Lance-Naik-Yagya-Pratap-Singh">Lance Naik Yagya Pratap Singh</keyword>, posted a video on social media criticising the use of soldiers as 'sahayaks' or 'buddy'. 
 "I had written an application to the PM in which I said that soldiers, who act as sahayaks, should not be made to polish shoes of officers," said <keyword id="6361419" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Singh">Singh</keyword>, who's with the 42 Infantry <keyword id="50460" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Brigade">Brigade</keyword> in <keyword id="45016" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Dehradun">Dehradun</keyword>. He alleged harassment by superiors for writing to Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> about these problems. 
 Today, <keyword id="329590" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="The-Army">the Army</keyword> chief said the use of social media to highlight an issue could have deleterious effect on "brave soldiers guarding India's borders." 
 
The Army says officers get '<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=indian+army&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">sahayak</a>s' for upkeep of their uniforms and weapons, as well as to act as their radio operators and "buddies" during combat operations. But parliamentary committees and other critics have slammed the 'sahayak' system as a vestige of the colonial era. They say officers blatantly misuse their 'sahayaks', getting them to do household work, walk the dogs and take kids to school. 
 The Army, on its part, has already asked the government to examine whether "non-combatants" should replace soldiers as 'sahayaks' in peace-time locations, while pressing for the system to continue in field and forward areas, said <keyword id="3970926" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="gen-rawat">Gen Rawat</keyword> late last week. 
 
But using social media to air grievances isn't ideal, Rawat said. It can be a "<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=indian+army&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">two-sided" weapon</a> which can be used favourably but also has "a detrimental effect", he said. The Army already has an "excellent" grievances redressal system that will now be topped by his "suggestions-cum-grievances" boxes, said the new Army chief. 
 
The Army chief said anyone, irrespective of rank or service, can use this mechanism to write directly to him. Assuring full confidentiality, he said the name of the soldier concerned will be deleted before any action is taken.
