<img class="gwt-Image" src="/photo/50772432.cms" /> <keyword id="143" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bollywood">Bollywood</keyword> heartthrob <keyword id="114453" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Arjun-Kapoor">Arjun Kapoor</keyword>, who would soon be seen hosting the next series of adventure based reality show Khatron Ke Khiladi, has confirmed that he is busy preparing for his role of a Bihari guy Madhav in his next movie <keyword id="2459041" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Half-Girlfriend">Half Girlfriend</keyword>, based on the novel of the same name, written by <keyword id="6390428" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Chetan-Bhagat">Chetan Bhagat</keyword>. 
 The movie would be directed by <keyword id="23758" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="mohit-suri">Mohit Suri</keyword>, who had last directed Hamari Adhuri Kahaani, and is the first movie to be produced by Chetan Bhagat. He would be producing the movie along with Ekta Kapoor, the czarina of Indian television and creative director of Balaji Telefilms. The movie would also see Shraddha Kapoor as Riya, the female lead. 
 
Before Arjun Kapoor was cast for the role, Sushant Singh Rajpoot was selected to play the role; however, he had to opt out of it since the dates were clashing with Dinesh Vijan’s untitled movie that Rajpoot had signed before Half Girlfriend. 
 
The movie would most probably be shot in Bihar, Delhi and New York, three cities that Madhav Jha, the protagonist travels to. The story is about a boy who hails from Bihar and finds it difficult to secure admission in a prestigious college in Delhi University. Securing admission from the sports quota, he falls in love with Riya, an upper class English-speaking girl, who later becomes his half-girlfriend and teaches him English. 
 
For preparing for his character, Kapoor would be seen donning the mannerisms and accent of a guy from Bihar. Maybe this is why he has said that he would need two and a half months for the role before he starts shooting.

If we take Box Office reports as the yardstick of success, Dutt’s advice is on point. At present, more than rom-com (which Bollywood has exploited to the point of saturation), socially-relevant topics, biopics, patriotism and action resonate with the masses. From the macho cops of Dabangg, Singham, etc. to the elaborate fight sequences of RRR to one-man-army fights in KGF or Pushpa – originally popularised in the 80s by the ‘angry young man’ Amitabh Bachchan – action clearly sells. Even the original king of romance, Shah Rukh Khan has taken to action movies now! Case in point – his latest film Pathaan, which broke multiple Box Office records. In fact, as revealed in the Netflix documentary series The Romantics, Khan was reluctant to play a romantic hero in the first place. But Kapoor appears to still be chasing rom-coms. Unfortunately, the hype created by Sanju well and truly died by the time Kapoor returned to the silver screen — four years later in 2022, with Brahamastra and Shamshera. Though the former raked in the collections, Kapoor’s innate magic seemed to be missing. The latter was better performed, but the muddled, slow-paced storytelling didn’t sit well with the audience. None could alter his image of a romantic hero. Perhaps Kapoor wasn’t meant for action, as advised by Dutt. Certainly, the few earlier glimpses that he provided with Besharam (2013) and Bombay Velvet (2015) left the audiences and critics unimpressed. For his upcoming films now, the actor has joined hands with directors known for delivering commercial hits —Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar by Luv Ranjan and Animal by Sandeep Reddy Vanga. The former belongs to the genre that has failed Kapoor in the recent past, and the latter is an action drama, where Kapoor is yet to deliver a hit. Only time will tell if this approach will give a much-needed boost to the 40-year-old star kid’s career, or drag him into the list of ‘has-beens’.  Pati Patni Aur Woh is Kartik Aryan’s best opening day ever. Luka Chuppi’s first day collections stood ₹8 crore whereas that of Pyaar ka Punchnama 2 and Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety were at ₹6 crore. Both these movies went on to be superhits that established him in the industry. He is one of the busiest actors today and bagged the sequels of two hit franchises — Love Aaj Kal 2 and Bhool Bhulaiya 2. Pati Patni Aur Woh itself is a remake of BR Chopra’s 1978 film where Abhinav Chintu Tyagi struggles to balance his married life and an affair. Last week, Ashutosh Gowariker’s magnum opus Panipat starring Sanjay Dutt, Arjun Kapoor and Kriti Sanon-- also released. The movie which depicts the third battle of Panipat in 1761 however registered a slow start. It made ₹4 crore on its opening day and ₹5.78 crore on the second and its total weekend collections were at ₹18 crore. Panipat’s total box office collection is almost the half of Pati Patni Aur Woh. Pati Patni, Woh aur paisa — the Kartik Aryan starrer earns twice as much as Arjun Kapoor’s Panipat

We are connected into this big bad world through our smartphones, and we go to Google much more than we go to our spouses, siblings or parents or even friends – for any information. Then there is FB where the family drama is always the staple diet and the projection of pretentious falsehood is much higher than, say, even at weddings. 
 
When did we hear last about Internet being our only hope towards democracy? And, that people on Internet (nee social networking sites, read: trolls) literally live on their FB and twitter handles where they can express freely without any fear? In the world of fake ids and even more fake personalities, Internet has something that concerns all of us. The future of our children is at stake owing to the social networking habits. 
 There was a time when the news made it to the Internet. Today, Internet makes news. How else would a kid in some remote corner in Kerala or Karnataka or even Kashmir be bothered about All India Bakchod aka <keyword id="1875393" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="AIB">AIB</keyword> roast? 
 
Forget Delhi elections, today people are bothered about why AIB was pulled off the Internet and if they can source the footage somehow to understand why such a furore was created around this ‘stand up comedy’ show put up by Bollywood and some of its ‘best’ minds? 
 
The supporters of AIB and those who oppose it can be broadly divided into few categories. There are those who didn’t like the tone and the tenor of the show and said this was BAD! Then there were those who didn’t like it, but wouldn’t oppose it because it managed to offend their regular offenders. Now, further, there are a few people who thought the show was downright ugly, while they stood the neutral ground. It was bad, simple. 
 Where does each one fit in? The question is even trickier to answer unless you understand the impact it has had on children and adults alike. What would you explain to a five year old who wants to know why <keyword id="3778" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Karan-Johar">Karan Johar</keyword> didn’t mind being screwed by 10 men? And why Sonam Kapoor didn’t land up on the show for the same reason? And first and foremost, what does ‘Bakchod’ mean? Why is it a bad word? Why were people opposing it? 
 
With our mite, let’s defend our right to get offended, and someone’s right to offend us too. That’s about the grownups, who discuss things like freedom of expression, democracy, free country, free press, free Internet etc. Etc. etc… 
 
But, what really concerns us is where are we headed? Let’s say we even defend it owing to our allegiance towards democracy or even expression. How does a 5 or 10 year old understand it? How do you stop him/her from accessing it on the net and imitating the same tone and tenor, say, with his friends/classmates or relatives? 
 
Would you say it is okay for the grownups to do this, but children shouldn’t be doing it because it’s bad? Do you see the murky lane we have just started treading on? 
 
AIB was a show that was meant to crack some wise jokes. Bollywood and television gives us much more headache than AIB roast, since ages and on a daily basis. But, in those cases, you either have a censor board or an ombudsman whom you can go to. 
 
Internet is a completely unmonitored danger zone where we would have to really monitor our children from perpetrators. How do you save the kids from a perpetrator who makes his way into your living room, laughing along? Will you join him, or stop him? 
 
To say AIB was freedom of expression is half truth. The endgame is near and we know that could be the front we want to believe. But we won’t stand up against it for being deemed ‘primitive’ or ‘archaic’. We fear our modern image, and hence we try all our logic and reasoning to stop our children from following it. 
 
It’s a straight line. If you can discuss the word ‘Bakchod’ with your child without having to cringe at the thought, it would be fine to have such shows on. But, if your child wants to know why someone would ‘jerk off to’ Farida Jalal who is in her 70s, you really have a problem at hand. 
 
It would be integral to our knowledge to understand why it is not needed and why we could have done without it in the first place. Many actors have disassociated themselves from it. It would be better to debate on whether AIB is liberating or simply ranting, for our children’s sake. 
 
They may thank us for it, tomorrow.

AIB: You Have A Right To Offend, But…

But this time, the man is from the North, the woman is from the South and the cultural clashes, strongly upheld by the two pairs of in-laws, nearly ruin the relationship. Inspired by <keyword id="6390428" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Chetan-Bhagat">Chetan Bhagat</keyword>’s best-selling novel, <keyword id="694041" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="2-States-The-Story-of-My-Marriage">2 States: The Story of My Marriage</keyword>, the Arjun Kapoor-Alia Bhatt-starrer <keyword id="72970" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="2-States">2 States</keyword> sparkles on-screen (at least during the first half) and has made a big bang at the <keyword id="827271" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Domestic-Box-Office">domestic box office</keyword>, collecting around Rs 38 crore nett over its debut weekend. The first Monday (Day 4, April 21) did not disappoint either and earnings stood at around Rs 6 crore, as per Koimoi. Total <keyword id="1996079" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Overseas-collections">overseas collections</keyword> during the first weekend amounted to an estimated Rs 13.66 crore. 
 
“2 States has a FANTABULOUS weekend. Friday Rs 12.42 crore, Saturday 12.13 crore, Sunday 13.51 crore. Total: Rs 38.06 crore nett. SUPER HIT,” tweeted trade analyst Taran Adarsh. According to <keyword id="255727" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Box-Office-India">Box Office India</keyword>, the film has emerged as the biggest hit of 2014 and has the potential to be the first Super Hit film of the year, depending on how well it can sustain over the next 10 days or so. 
 
Other two releases of the week include <keyword id="1135108" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Dekh-Tamasha-Dekh">Dekh Tamasha Dekh</keyword>, a brutally honest and vitriolic political <keyword id="1462374" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Satire">satire</keyword> directed by theatre icon Feroz Abbas Khan (of Tumhari Amrita fame), and <keyword id="1167288" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Lucky-Kabootar">Lucky Kabootar</keyword>, a <keyword id="24069" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="romantic-comedy">romantic comedy</keyword> starring <keyword id="1364986" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Eijaaz-Khan">Eijaaz Khan</keyword> and <keyword id="3212" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kulraj-Randhawa">Kulraj Randhawa</keyword>. The latter, directed by <keyword id="1660883" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Shammi-Chhabra">Shammi Chhabra</keyword>, has been released after too many delays and depicts how <keyword id="6369280" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Lucky">Lucky</keyword> (Eijaaz) ends up marrying the Plain Jane <keyword id="1734" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Laxmi">Laxmi</keyword> (Kulraj), instead of the glam babe <keyword id="190428" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kammo">Kammo</keyword> (<keyword id="33221" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Shraddha-Das">Shraddha Das</keyword>). But for both the movies, the collections are hardly notable, thanks to very little promotion and near-zero hype. While Lucky Kabootar collected a little over Rs 1 crore in the first two days (Sunday and Monday numbers are still <keyword id="6357415" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="missing">missing</keyword>), Dekh Tamasha Dekh garnered around Rs 4.7 crore during the same time span. But we will take a closer look at these two after decoding the tremendous <keyword id="25892" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="box-office">box office</keyword> success of 2 States.

Till date, the best performers are Mumbai and Mysore, with Mumbai amassing over Rs 13 crore nett and Mysore collecting around Rs 3 crore nett. The movie’s opening is the second biggest ever for a non-star-cast film after <keyword id="6621270" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Grand-Masti">Grand Masti</keyword> (2013). <keyword id="127336" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bhaag-Milkha-Bhaag">Bhaag Milkha Bhaag</keyword> (2013), <keyword id="549195" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="Student-of-the-Year">Student Of The Year</keyword> (2012) and <keyword id="1710502" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Shuddh-Desi-Romance">Shuddh Desi Romance</keyword> (2013) are the next in order after 2 States. 2 States is also one of the highest grossers of 2014 and has already surpassed the lifetime collections of some noted <keyword id="569603" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bollywood-flicks">Bollywood flicks</keyword> including <keyword id="1520199" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Hasee-Toh-Phasee">Hasee Toh Phasee</keyword>, <keyword id="853887" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Shaadi-Ke-Side-Effects">Shaadi Ke Side Effects</keyword>, <keyword id="6354768" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Highway">Highway</keyword> and <keyword id="1434830" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Yaariyan">Yaariyan</keyword>.  Going by its <keyword id="1996031" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Box-office-performance">box office performance</keyword>, 2 States seems to have done a commendable job, with <keyword id="6354526" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Alia-Bhatt">Alia Bhatt</keyword> (<keyword id="2204646" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ananya-Swaminathan">Ananya Swaminathan</keyword>) and <keyword id="114453" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Arjun-Kapoor">Arjun Kapoor</keyword> (<keyword id="2204645" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Krish-Malhotra">Krish Malhotra</keyword>) showing a rare on-screen chemistry that rocks and sizzles. The young people meet at the <keyword id="6429635" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="IIM-Ahmedabad">IIM-Ahmedabad</keyword> campus and fall in love, but it is, by no means, a campus romance as harsh social realities await them outside. And the movie, too, stumbles at that point as we are led to <keyword id="122267" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="orthodox">orthodox</keyword> households (Krish is a <keyword id="5105" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Punjabi">Punjabi</keyword> lad and Ananya is a <keyword id="6356629" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="tamil">Tamil</keyword> lass from Chennai as all of you must know by now), instead of modern abodes housing millennial open culture, and two pairs of stereotype Bollywood parents. The rest of the struggles and tribulations faced by the young lovers follow the beaten path until the final-and-inevitable reconciliation that makes everyone happy. 
 
Interestingly, Bhagat’s work has managed to ward off the cliché that lies inherent in cultural clashes and generation gaps. However, the movie has an overdose of everything although it manages to retain some kind of charm that will keep you hooked. As Saibal Chatterjee of NDTV so rightly pointed out, “2 States is a <keyword id="2208734" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Cross-culture-love-story">cross-culture love story</keyword> that strives to be sweet, funny and emotionally wrenching all at once. It is occasionally funny and sweet in parts all right, but the <keyword id="1204454" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="family-drama">family drama</keyword> at the film’s core has a severely stultified feel… It sets out to be a slice-of-life drama about a real couple grappling with the politics of <keyword id="2208729" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Inter-community-marriage">inter-community marriage</keyword>, but it fails to generate enough energy and warmth to draw the audience into a tight clinch.” 
 
In stark contrast to 2 States, Dekh Tamasha Dekh (starring <keyword id="317266" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vinay-Jain">Vinay Jain</keyword>, <keyword id="2218" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Satish-Kaushik">Satish Kaushik</keyword> and <keyword id="1559" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="tanvi-azmi">Tanvi Azmi</keyword>) is based on a true story and ruthlessly reveals a nation’s <keyword id="2208740" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Political-hypocrisy">political hypocrisy</keyword> and <keyword id="877158" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Communal-Disharmony">communal disharmony</keyword> with the help of its twin tools – satire and <keyword id="424300" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Irony">irony</keyword>. Too many human elements are woven here in a complex tapestry, but the very core of <keyword id="6355987" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="violence">violence</keyword>, <keyword id="6388475" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="tragedy">tragedy</keyword> and hopelessness would hit us hard and keep us wondering about the multi-layered reality we are compelled to confront every day. Although not a typical art house film, this movie is meant for a niche audience and offers a <keyword id="2208742" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Gripping-tale">gripping tale</keyword> of the <keyword id="911828" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="dark-forces">dark forces</keyword> that we are not likely to forget in a hurry.

The challenges of taking up a family business grow manifold for first generation entrepreneurs who have no backing in the form of an already existing business setup. However, brothers Arjun and <keyword id="1178173" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rohan-Malhotra">Rohan Malhotra</keyword>, who founded early stage fund <keyword id="2994932" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="InvestoPad">Investopad</keyword> in 2013, think that such a setup offers some advantages as well. "Growing up together, we tend to disagree on most things, but this turns out to be productive in business as it creates healthy debates," Arjun told <a href="Brotherly%20disagreements%20lead%20to%20healthy%20debates,%20say%20Investopad%20founders%20Arjun%20and%20Rahul%20Malhotra">ET</a>. "Small companies are naturally working under a limited bandwidth and hence, they need to get their priorities straight - having a partner you are comfortable with makes that process easier," he adds. As of now, Investopad has its focus on ventures centred on solving India-centric problems, building relationships with these enterprises so that they can observe their thinking process and entrepreneurial capabilities. "When we started off, the startup ecosystem was already brimming with indigenous as well as foreign funds which were deploying funds at later stages of a startup - few were focussed on early-stages of a venture," says Rohan. "So we tried to figure out what the pain points were for these entrepreneurs and not having a physical space to work out of turned out to be one of them," he adds. It was then that the brothers created that space for early-stage startups and entrepreneurs, keeping it open only to a few selective enterprises that had the potential of being investment-worthy in the future. "What we have tried to foster here is a community of like-minded people who work together and even help each other out, bringing in a more collaborative rather than competitive environment," says Rohan. "For instance, if there is a company in the telecom space that is creating a new technology, we can bring in people at a CXO level within the telecom industry as informal advisors to them," Arjun adds. Investopad has now become a layer between the emerging founder ecosystem and seasoned industry leaders, having managed to spread across cities like Delhi, Gurgaon and Bangalore. "We never wanted to raise money in our own business - we put up that capital ourselves," says Rohan. "We have spent about half a million dollars across three physical locations, that is Gurgaon, Delhi and Bangalore. Above and beyond that, we have also invested personal capital in the companies that we found to be exciting at its early stage. Brotherly disagreements lead to healthy debates, say Investopad founders Arjun and Rohan Malhotra

<img class="gwt-Image" src="/photo/50945515.cms" /> When we heard that <keyword id="3778" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Karan-Johar">Karan Johar</keyword> was making a movie based on a family with two brothers, we were reminded of the success that Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham was, even though coming to think of it, <keyword id="39101" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="K3G">K3G</keyword> was nothing but an overdramatic run of emotional problems that could have ended with a round table discussion amongst the elders of the family. 
 When we further came to know that Indian heartthrob <keyword id="1320874" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sidharth-Malhotra">Sidharth Malhotra</keyword> would be starring in the movie along with his Pakistani counterpart <keyword id="2358880" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Fawad-Khan">Fawad Khan</keyword>, we breathed a sigh of relief that these two almost of the same age actors won’t be leaving us in tears, sitting on a white bench not once but twice in the movie. 
 When we came to know that <keyword id="6354526" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Alia-Bhatt">Alia Bhatt</keyword> would be the female lead of the movie, we wondered why there were two actors, who were playing real brothers, and one actress in this romantic comedy. However, since Indian cinema is at an experimental stage right now, we thought that it would be better to wait for the trailer before passing any judgement. 
 
Now that the trailer is out, we have only one thing to say, cliché. 
 
The trailer starts with Rahul and Arjun, played by Khan and Malhotra, driving on an empty road in the wee hours of night, with Khan, in his thick Pakistani accent complaining about the driver of another car who is needlessly honking at them. The scene establishes a healthy relation between the two of them. 
 The scene then shifts to <keyword id="51" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rajat-Kapoor">Rajat Kapoor</keyword> and <keyword id="20894" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ratna-Pathak-Shah">Ratna Pathak Shah</keyword>, the parents of Rahul and Arjun, who are always locking horns with each other, even in front of their children. Normal for Punjabis, we think and move ahead to Dadu (<keyword id="6357910" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rishi-Kapoor">Rishi Kapoor</keyword>), the quintessential wheelchair bound grandfather of a Punjabi family, well dressed and counting the last and happiest days of his life. 
 
Next scene shows us that even the younger Kapoor lads are at loggerheads with each other, throwing things at each other which if hit the right target, would make them regret their existence for the whole life. Again, this too is normal for Punjabi siblings. 
 
Alia is then introduced as Arjun’s friend and possible love interest, who coincidentally, also knows Rahul from her past. While she has drinks with Arjun and his friends, she is seen calling Rahul hot, and even kissing him (a fake one, of course, given Fawad’s love for his people’s emotions and more than that, his wife back home). 
 
The trailer then gets intense, when it’s clear that love is blossoming in not two but three young hearts, out of which two belong to real brothers, leading to a series of questions, tears and the revelation of Kapoor family having some secrets only they know of. 
The trailer ends with Rishi Kapoor saying that all he wants is a family photo with the title Kapoor &amp; Sons, since 1921. 
 
Overall, the two-and-a-half minute trailer takes us to a Punjabi family with two sons, who both get into a love triangle and question their priorities in life, but we are not impressed. 
 
All the actors of the movie have, time and again, have proved their mettle, and we doubt if they would fail to deliver good performances in the movie, but what we don’t understand is, why weren’t better scenes from the movie chosen for the first trailer of the movie, and why have the audiences been kept in the dark? After all, it’s a romantic comedy drama, and not a suspense thriller that we should be guessing what’s going on in the minds of the actors. 
 
While the actors look promising and the posters look fun, let’s hope that the next trailers of the movie come out well planned, and are able to raise our expectations from the movie, which sadly have been lowered by the first trailer.

Bollywood royalty shine at star-studded premiere of 'The Archies'

This is the view held by five brokerage firms — ICICI Securities/Direct, Motilal Oswal, Prabhudas Lilladher and ShareKhan. They believe that good movies can help them replicate the March success which came with superhits like the controversial Kashmir Files; Rajamouli’s RRR, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s period drama Gangubai Kathiawadi, followed up by KGF 2 in April. “They witnessed a March — which was the best ever in the history, led by superlative performances of movies,” ICICI Direct said in its views on PVR and INOX both. The March footfalls made up for half of the Jan-March quarters footfalls in theaters. But both these companies need more than a good month to turn things around. A strong recovery in footfalls and sales of these listed theatre companies will be driven by ‘strong content slate lines’, as per ICICI Direct. If all goes well, it estimates that both these companies can cross their pre-covid earnings in the current financial year. These companies are in desperate need of a ‘recovery worthy’ movie releases. However, it disappointed movie distributors as it was declared a theatrical flop. Singh’s Jayeshbhai Jordaar too did not live up to its expectations. Kangana Ranaut’s Dhakkad, Akshay Kumar’s Bachchan Pandey, Prabhas’ Radhe Shyam too failed to impress the audiences. Apart from 83, all the other movies were released after India had overcome the third Covid-19 wave.  Uri - The Surgical Strike starring Vicky Kaushal is a jolting reminder of India's surgical strikes against Pakistan in 2016. The movie was lauded for triggering the patriotic feelings in India. The film earned an estimated ₹342.06 crore. It is the first midrange movie to cross ₹200 crore.Both Kaushal and Uri’s director won the national award for the film.

From Kabir Singh to Avengers Endgame — Top movies that Indians looked for on Google

<img class="gwt-Image" src="/photo/47830635.cms" />June is at the fag end and we almost have a mid-year report card of Bollywood. Though the year started on a dismal note, it picked up towards May and June. 
 
This year, January was like a drought month and even movies starring big names did not interest the audience. As Arjun Kapoor and Sonakshi Sinha starrer-'Tevar'- failed to take off, even the Horrex (horror + sex) formula did not work out for ‘Alone’ and ‘Khamoshiyan’. 
 
Other movies that released in January and failed to make a mark included Sonam Kapoor-starrer ‘Dolly Ki Doli’, 'Sharafat Gayi Tel Lene', ‘Crazy Cukkad Family’, ‘Hawaizaada’ among others. 
 
The only respite that the Bollywood lovers got was from Akshay Kumar’s ‘Baby’, which also became the first movie of 2015 to enter the Rs 100 crore club. 
 
But the jinx did not end in January as February continued to bring more bad news for the industry. 
 
The big shocker came in the form of ‘Shamitabh’. The movie, starring Amitabh Bachchan and Dhanush, was directed by R Balki, the maker who has given us movies like Pa and Cheeni Kum. 
 
Later in the month, ‘Roy’ released, which recorded a good start but by weekend the movie fizzled out. Most trade pundits pegged the crucial India-Pakistan match at the World Cup as the reason for the drop of sales on Sunday but the movie could not recover much post this phase also because of negative word of mouth. 
 
Thankfully, later in the same month we had movies like ‘Badlapur’ and ‘Dum Laga Ke Haisha’. Both managed to gather decent collections at the Box Office. In fact, ‘Dum Laga Ke Haisha’ was a complete surprise package and managed to pull crowds even in its third week . 
 
March threw a mixed bag as Anushka Sharma starrer 'NH-10' received critical acclaim. April again was a dry month as Bollywood had nothing to offer that could have clicked with the Bolly buffs. 
 
However, Bollywood saw a turnaround in May. It started on a high note with Akshay Kumar starrer ‘Gabbar is Back’, which went to collect Rs 86.55 crore at the Box Office. This was followed by Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan and Irrfan Khan’s 'Piku', which struck a right chord with the audience and collected Rs 111 crore worldwide. 
 
Later in the month, Kangana Ranaut wowed the audience with her spectacular acting in ‘Tanu Weds Manu Returns’. As per reports, the movie managed to collect Rs 190.87 crore worldwide. Given that the movie was made with Rs 31 crore budget, it stood out and is the most profitable movie of 2015 till date. 
 
But, the disappointment came from ‘Bombay Velvet’. Everybody had high hopes from Ranbir Kapoor’s flick but it fell flat. 
 
The momentum seems to continue with ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’ and ‘ABCD 2’. ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’ has managed Rs 37.05 crore in the first weekend and is holding the fort well. Also ABCD 2, sequel of ABCD, managed to get the biggest opening for 2015 and continues to do a good business over the week. 
 
The later half will see a slew of big- starrer movies such as Salman Khan starrer ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’, Vikas Bahl of Queen fame’s ‘Shaandaar’, ‘Singh is Bling’ featuring Akshay Kumar, Nikhil Advani’s ‘Katti Batti’, Aishwarya Rai’s comeback movie ‘Jazbaa’ and also ‘Dilwale’ in which fans will see Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol paired together. In addition, there will also be a third installment of ‘Hate Story’, ‘Hera Pheri’ and ‘Kya Kool Hai Hum’ to look forward to. 
 
Commenting on the movie sentiment of 2015, Komal Nahata, Trade Analyst shared, “It has been a good 2015 so far. Sure there were some upsets in the start of the year but May has been extremely kind and the rest of the year looks really promising." 
 
We hope that the forthcoming movies get the cash ringer buzzing for Bollywood and we continue to see some entertaining movies in the latter half of the year.
