<ul class="summary-list"><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/ups">UPS</a> is scaling up its next-day delivery and drone delivery networks - and it's investing $20 billion on automating its facilities. </li><li>In doing that, UPS is looking for new partnerships with companies that are leading the charge in those "mega-trends."</li><li>Scott Price, UPS' chief strategy and transformation officer, said the package giant looks for capability - not capacity - when acquiring a firm. "We are finding partnership very valuable right now," he told Business Insider. </li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/prime">Click here to read more BI Prime stories</a>.</li></ul><p>DAVOS, Switzerland - UPS shook the logistics world when it bought Coyote Logistics, a Chicago-based freight brokerage, <a href="https://pressroom.ups.com/pressroom/ContentDetailsViewer.page?ConceptType=PressReleases&amp;id=1439914985782-913">for a whopping $1.8 billion</a> in 2015.</p><p>But since then, the package giant hasn't made any big-name (or big-dollar) acquisitions - even though the company is <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/upss-20-billion-problem-operations-stuck-in-the-20th-century-1529072397">investing $20 billion</a> on automating its package sort facilities, and significant funds on its drone delivery expansion.</p><p>But UPS hinted that there might be more merger and acquisition activity in coming years. </p><p>"So with our API integration, coming up with digital products that we are organically developing, as well as partnerships with leading providers, it will be a combination, and there will be some M&amp;A opportunities," Kevin Warren, UPS' chief marketing officer, told Business Insider. </p><p>"We always have a very active M&amp;A portfolio," Scott Price, UPS' chief strategy and transformation officer, told Business Insider. "Clearly, I'm not going to comment on anything today, neither confirming or denying."</p><p>UPS moved some <a href="https://pressroom.ups.com/pressroom/ContentDetailsViewer.page?ConceptType=FactSheets&amp;id=1426321563187-193">5.2 billion packages</a> and documents globally in 2018. Across all parcel movements in the US, companies like UPS and FedEx are on track to double the amount that they move in the next decade, Price said.</p><p>And in expanding that volume even further, Price said UPS' knowledge base from 113 years of operation will provide the necessary knowledge into where to invest - and what trends to skip out on. He referred to moves like next-day delivery and drone delivery as "mega-trends" that the package giant should focus on. </p><p>That distinction is necessary "to take on more volume, but yet create more profit versus necessarily some of the other players out there," Price said. </p><p>"Where we are going to invest, and we've invested very heavily in the last three years ... it's from the foresight of knowing what that mega-trend is going to do and the need for incremental capacity and incremental volume," Price said. </p><p>Still, it's all about finding those players with <em>capability</em>, the executives emphasized. Generating $58 billion in revenue in 2018, the Atlanta-based <a href="https://fortune.com/fortune500/2018/ups/">Fortune 50</a> doesn't necessarily need to acquire <em>capacity</em>.</p><p>"We acquire when it makes sense and you acquire when you are trying to acquire capability and skill," Price said. "We don't need to acquire scale or capacity, we can build that into our network in the United States, where we would look for is capability."</p><p>UPS is emphasizing technologies around enabling customer delivery demands, as well as drone technology, which has mainly been used so far for health and B2B applications. </p><p>The most-recent public investment from UPS: <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ups-backed-autonomous-truck-startup-tusimple-raises-120-million-funding-2019-9">a minority stake in autonomous trucker TuSimple</a>. Since the summer, TuSimple has been moving UPS Freight loads in Arizona. </p><p>"We are finding partnership very valuable right now," Price said.</p>

UPS C-suiters reveal how the company thinks about acquisitions - and hinted that there might be more to come as the package giant doubles down on drones and next-day delivery

There was also a 58-second moment of silence.</p><p>The team was also introduced along with first responders.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>Once the game started, the players kept emotions riding high.</p><p>Just 2.5 minutes into the game, the Arizona Coyotes got caught flat-footed when they thought they had a turnover. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Getty/Christian Petersen</span></p><p class="caption">John Scott #28 of the Arizona Coyotes sets up in front of Ryan Murray #27 of the Columbus Blue Jackets during an NHL game in December.</p></div><p></p></div></div>A largely unknown hockey player is going to be a captain at next week's NHL All-Star Game - and he's not even in the NHL.</p><p>Responding to enormous fan pressure, the league announced Tuesday that journeyman hockey player John Scott will get to <a href="http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=798493&amp;cmpid=nhl-twt">keep his fan-voted spot on the all-star roster</a>, even though he was demoted to a minor league team last week.</p><p><span>Scott was unexpectedly named the winner of the All-Star Game's fan vote earlier this month, thanks to a well-organized Internet campaign publicized on sites such as </span><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-puck-daddy/john-scott-and-2016-nhl-all-star-game--why-fans-must-make-this-happen-155528278.html">Puck Daddy</a><span> and </span><a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/hockey/comments/3v2k51/john_scott_is_56th_in_all_star_voting/">Reddit's hockey forum</a><span>.</span></p><p><span>"I am looking forward to enjoying a fun and unique experience at All-Star Weekend in Nashville with my family," Scott said in a statement released by the NHL. "While being voted to the All-Star Game by the fans was not something I expected to happen, I am excited to participate in the All-Star events with my fellow players."</span></p><p>Scott, who most recently played for the Arizona Coyotes, is a journeyman enforcer known more for his fistfights than his goal-scoring prowess. The 33-year-old has played for <a href="http://www.hockey-reference.com/players/s/scottjo01.html">six teams in eight NHL seasons</a>, scoring just 5 goals and logging 542 penalty minutes along the way. </p><p></p><p>For fans who participated in the campaign, the thought of the 6-foot-8 bruiser squaring off against the likes of Alex Ovechkin and Patrick Kane was too much to resist. The fact that Scott was waived by the Coyotes in December, making him team-less <a href="http://www.cbssports.com/nhl/eye-on-hockey/25418706/john-scott-leading-nhl-all-star-fan-vote-waived-again-by-coyotes">for the third time this season</a>, didn't change that.</p><p>The NHL didn't seem to appreciate the humor, however. As the Scott campaign gained steam, the league broke tradition and began <a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-puck-daddy/nhl-has-no-idea-what-do-with-john-scott--all-star-162549003.html">concealing the All-Star vote totals</a>. By mid-December, the NHL removed links to the All-Star ballot - and all references to the game itself - from its website. And when Scott ultimately won the fan vote, the NHL buried the accomplishment in the <a href="http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=796248">25th paragraph of a press release.</a></p><p>Last week, Scott was dealt in a three-team trade to the Montreal Canadiens, who promptly demoted him to the St. John's IceCaps of the American Hockey League. TSN's Bob McKenzie soon reported that the NHL had pressured Scott into sitting out the All-Star Game:</p><p class="twitter-tweet" lang="en">The conspiracy theories immediately followed: </p><p></p><p class="twitter-tweet" lang="en">Fans began circulating a <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/FreeJohnScott">#FreeJohnScott</a> hashtag, and were even pledging to boycott the All-Star Game before the NHL reversed course Tuesday.</p><p class="twitter-tweet" lang="en">In the statement, the NHL acknowledged that Scott's "unique circumstance" required review, "<span>the result of which was a determination to maintain the status quo for the All-Star weekend in order to preserve all parties' pre-existing expectations, including Scott's desire to participate."</span></p><p class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><span>The only question now is what team Scott will represent during All-Star weekend - he'll be captaining the Pacific squad despite playing for the minor-league affiliate of a team in the Atlantic Division.</span></p><p class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><span>This isn't the first time the NHL has found itself at the center of an All-Star voting scandal. One of this year's NHL All-Stars doesn't even play in the NHL - and it's a stranger story than you can imagine

<p><strong><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Kamil Krzaczynski/AP</span></p><p class="caption">Scott Foster is one of the only emergency goalies to ever see the ice.</p></div><p></p></div></div></strong></p><ul><li><strong>Scott Foster, a 36-year-old accountant from Chicago, filled in as an emergency goalie for the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday.</strong></li><li><strong>NHL teams must dress two goalies and may attempt to call up a minor-league goalie the day of a game in case of injury or illness.</strong></li><li><strong>If they can't find a replacement, NHL teams keep emergency goalies, who are "any available goalie who is eligible" to be at the arena and fill in for either club.</strong></li><li><strong>Emergency goalies getting on the ice has rarely happened.</strong></li></ul><p><br />Scott Foster became a sports sensation on Thursday when he filled in as an <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/blackhawks-accountant-emergency-goalie-hero-2018-3">emergency goalie for the Chicago Blackhawks</a> and successfully defended the net.</p><p>After injuries forced the Blackhawks to go through two goalies, including a backup who was called up from the AHL, the Blackhawks turned to Foster, a 36-year-old accountant, as their goalie.</p><p>Foster, who plays in a beer-league in Chicago, stopped every shot that went his way, helping the Blackhawks beat the Winnipeg Jets, 6-2.</p><p>But why did an NHL team turn to an accountant off the street to take on perhaps the most challenging position on the ice? It's part of a funky rule in the NHL that has been in existence for years that teams rarely utilize.</p><p>Hockey teams can dress 20 players, including two goalies. If one goalie cannot play, NHL teams will try to call up a goalie from a minor-league team to fill in. If that can't be accomplished in time for a game, they can turn to an emergency goalie, who can be "any available goalkeeper who is eligible," <a href="https://www.nhl.com/news/nhl-backup-goalie-tales/c-284389510">according to NHL.com</a>.</p><p>In the Blackhawks' case, starting goalie Corey Crawford was already out, leaving Anton Forsberg to tend goal. When Forsberg got hurt before the game, the Blackhawks turned to Colin Delia, who was called up from the AHL. When Delia experienced cramps during the game, the Blackhawks turned to Foster, who that night was called and told to dress. Foster attends 13 games per season and usually just eats arena food and enjoys the experience, <a href="http://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/22967956/nhl-chicago-beer-league-teammates-toast-emergency-goalie-big-league-moment-blackhawks">according to ESPN's Greg Wyshynsky</a>.</p><p>Recent rules have made it so home teams have to have an emergency backup that could fill in for either side, meaning Foster could have also filled in for the Jets, if needed.</p><p>Though the system is a little odd, there are complications to having qualified goalies readily available. Even minor league players have obligations to their teams, and there are logistical hurdles, such as travel, that can prevent any minor league goalie from being able to fill in right away. With only 20 players dressing, it would not be the best use of resources to have four goalies on a roster, ready to play at any moment. So in response, teams have to get clever.</p><p><a href="http://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/nhl/schoenfeld-nhl-emergency-goalies-1.4353199">Doug Harrison of CBC Sports reported</a> in October that only the Los Angeles Kings and New Jersey Devils hold open tryouts for emergency fill-in goalies.</p><p>There's also a matter of pay. Teams wouldn't want to pay goalies to sit around and only play in the direst of circumstances. But in the event of emergency goalies who don't play competitively, creative measures can be taken as compensation. According to Harrison, Arizona Coyotes emergency goalie Nate Schoenfeld used to be paid in souvenirs like hockey pucks and memorabilia before he figured out an actual payment system for sitting in for 30 Coyotes games per season.</p><p>While some emergency goalies have dressed and been available to play, very few have ever gotten into the games. <span>Jorge Alves was an equipment manager for the Carolina Panthers when he filled in as an emergency goalie in 2016 and is believed to be the first emergency goalie to get on the ice. He played seven seconds.</span></p><p>The incident happens so rarely that the league might not be incentivized to change the rule. Why NHL teams use goalies off the street to fill in for injured players - like the 36-year-old accountant who became a star for the Blackhawks

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><ul class="summary-list"><li><strong>President Donald Trump said Saturday mothers were giving their daughters birth control pills before they migrate to the southern border to seek entry to the United States.</strong></li><li><strong>Though the remark caught many off guard, sexual assault and abuse is a well-documented danger of migration to the border and Trump's claim about birth control has been reported before.&#xa0;&#xa0;</strong></li><li><strong>There have been previous reports of female migrants seeking birth control in anticipation of their journeys through Mexico, but humanitarian organizations indicate this is a worldwide trend among female migrants, rather than a trend specific to migration from Central America to the US.&#xa0;</strong></li></ul><p>In a televised speech from the White House on Saturday, President Donald Trump made an alarming claim about the violence faced by women who travel to the US border seeking entry.</p><p>In discussing the threats faced by women and children who journey to the US from Central America, Trump said mothers were giving their daughters birth control pills before they migrate to the southern border because of the high rates of sexual assault suffered by migrant women along their journeys.&#xa0;</p><p>"Thousands of children are being exploited by ruthless coyotes and vicious cartels and gangs," Trump said, using a term for a smuggler who brings others to the border.&#xa0;</p><p>Trump made the remarks as he <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/democrats-rejected-trumps-latest-offer-to-end-the-government-shutdown-daca-2019-1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">proposed a deal</a> with Democrats to exchange border-wall funding for temporary protections for certain immigrants.</p><p>"One in three women is sexually assaulted on the dangerous journey north," Trump said. "In fact, many loving mothers give their young daughters birth control pills for the long journey up to the United States because they know they may be raped or sexually accosted or assaulted. "</p><p>Trump has <a href="https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2019/01/09/trump-one-in-three-women-sexually-assaulted-on-dangerous-trek-to-border/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">cited the sexual assault statistic before</a> when pushing for his long-promised border wall, and sexual assault is indeed prevalent within groups of migrants who seek entry through the southern border. Estimates from nonprofits including Amnesty International say <a href="https://www.amnestyusa.org/migrants-in-mexico-invisible-victims-of-abuse/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">six out of every 10 female migrants</a> encounter sexual abuse.</p><p><strong><em>Read more</em></strong>: <em><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/thousands-more-children-separated-at-border-than-previously-known-hhs-2019-1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Thousands&#xa0;more children were separated from their parents at the border than were previously known, inspector general reveals in bombshell report</a></em></p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>But Trump's mention of young female migrants being given birth control in preparation for the journey is a less-discussed feature of difficulties facing immigrant women, though it's not a new claim.</p><p><span>Chris Cabrera, US Customs and Border Protection agent and spokesperson for the National Border Patrol Council, <a href="https://losangeles.cbslocal.com/2018/06/19/border-patrol-immigration-plan-b-birth-control/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told CNN</a> in June 2018 that agents at the border have seen girls as young as 12 years old who are put on birth control "because they know getting violated is part of the journey."&#xa0;</span></p><p><span><a href="https://www.pbs.org/newshour/nation/facing-risk-rape-migrant-women-prepare-birth-control" target="_blank" rel="noopener">A PBS report from 2014</a> said pharmacies in smuggling towns are familiar with young girls seeking birth control pills or shots, sometimes on advice from the "coyotes" who are leading their trek and who perpetrate much of the sexual abuse suffered by female migrants.&#xa0;</span></p><p><span>Sexual abuse is so widespread that all female migrants <a href="https://www.refinery29.com/en-us/2018/07/204996/kirstjen-nielsen-homeland-security-detained-girls-pregnancy-test" target="_blank" rel="noopener">over the age of 10 are given pregnancy tests</a>, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said last year, because "that is how dangerous the journey is."&#xa0;</span></p><p><span><a href="https://www.csmonitor.com/USA/2014/0806/For-some-migrant-girls-rape-and-pregnancy-are-part-of-the-journey" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Christian Science Monitor previously reported</a> that some girls may find they are pregnant only through screenings given by US agents upon reaching the border, which would be the first medical examination they could access since beginning their journey.&#xa0;</span></p><p><span>It isn't only migrants seeking entry to the US who go on birth control to survive their journeys. A researcher with <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-women-conference-migrant-rape/women-migrants-fearing-rape-take-contraceptives-before-journey-rights-groups-idUSKBN13P2BW" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Human Rights Watch told Reuters</a> in 2016 that women who flee political unrest, severe poverty, and war across the world anticipate rape once they flee, and prepare by taking contraceptives.&#xa0;</span></p><p><span>Even upon reaching the border, female migrants face difficulties including widespread abuse, with Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainees filing over <a href="https://theintercept.com/2018/04/11/immigration-detention-sexual-abuse-ice-dhs/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">1,200 sexual abuse complaints</a> over seven years. The fans of the Cleveland Indians and Detroit Lions have the longest championship droughts

The Sabres&#xa0;<a href="http://sabres.buffalonews.com/2015/03/02/sabres-add-future-assets-four-trades-deadline-day/">made several trades for future assets</a> at this year's trade deadline, and are in line to have the best odds in the NHL's draft lottery.</p><p>Thursday night in an overtime loss to the Arizona Coyotes - the second worst team in the NHL, also aiming for a top draft pick - Sabres fans audibly cheered for the opposing Coyotes after they scored a game-winning goal.</p><p>It wasn't just a contingent of Coyotes fans in Buffalo for the game - the crowd was cheering for the Sabres' loss. Buffalo Sabres fans loudly cheered an opponent's game-winning goal because they want the No. 1 pick

<p class="source"><span>Sjoerd van der Wal/Getty Images; Samantha Lee/Business Insider</span></p><ul class="summary-list"><li>Technologists and big spenders in America's $800 billion trucking industry are investing in new types of trucking software - but not much in self-driving trucks.</li><li>That's because the likelihood that self-driving trucks will be realized in the coming decade is diminishing further and further, making it a lesser focus for big players in the industry.</li><li>As a result, investors are gravitating toward software solutions for trucking companies, which are a safer, less volatile bet.</li><li>With investor focus elsewhere, the expectation for self-driving trucks could be pushed even further down the road. </li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/?hprecirc-bullet">Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories</a>.</li></ul><p>Everyone from <a href="https://www.fleetowner.com/technology/article/21696130/report-driverless-trucks-will-eliminate-millions-of-jobs">Tucker Carlson</a> to <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2020/01/17/washington-post-editorial-board-interviews-2020-candidate-andrew-yang/?arc404=true">Andrew Yang</a> has opined on self-driving trucks in recent years. And while many of those influencers' opinions differ on virtually everything else, their standpoint on autonomous trucking is unified: Self-driving technology is coming, soon, and it will squash the livelihoods of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/autonomous-tech-truck-driver-jobs-2018-12">1.8 million Americans.</a></p><p>But looking at the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/logistics-startups-2020-according-to-vcs-2020-2">$19.3 billion</a> supply-chain venture-capital space tells a much different story.</p><p>Investment in supply chain is red hot. VCs in that space closed 534 deals in 2018, according to Pitchbook's most recent numbers in a December report. That's up from 392 deals in 2015, and just 85 in 2010.</p><p>But Pitchbook revealed that self-driving trucks aren't dominating the space, with 122 deals in 2018 and 96 in 2019. That may be because, according to the Pitchbook report, there's an "unproven model in autonomy." </p><p>"The technological ideas that may be the most scientifically exciting are often not the highest probability of success," Benjamin Gordon, founder and managing partner of private-equity firm <a href="https://cambridgecapital.com">Cambridge Capital</a>, told Business Insider.</p><p>"Most venture capitalists, and certainly all private-equity firms, prefer to invest in businesses that have a high likelihood of success and a low level of volatility," Gordon continued. "And self-driving is a pretty good example of the opposite."</p><p>That could push the expectation for self-driving trucks even further down the road, because innovation takes money, and much of the money is currently going elsewhere. </p><h2>VCs and tech giants are looking at automating brokerage instead</h2><p>Four years ago, Uber Freight's head of operations, Bill Driegert, would have said self-driving trucks would be on the road by 2030. Now, he's not so sure.</p><p>"It's still more in the investment phase, where you don't have large-scale commercial implementations," Driegert told Business Insider.</p><p class="source"><span>Pitchbook; Andy Kiersz/Business Insider</span></p><p class="caption">VC spending in freight is exploding.</p><p>Meanwhile, most players in the trucking-technology space are focusing on automating the process in which truck drivers are matched with loads to move from retailers and manufacturers. Companies like <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/amazon-freight-disrupts-uber-billion-dollar-trucking-industry-2019-4-1028147655">Amazon</a>, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/uber-freight-trucking-profitability-brokerage-2019-9">Uber</a>, and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/oracle-trucking-digital-freight-brokerages-solve-biggest-problem-trucking-industry-2019-7">Oracle</a> all have their own freight-brokerage platforms.</p><p>The folks who lead these efforts at big companies and the ones who helm the startups, like <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trucking-convoy-fund-raise-startup-founder-interview-2019-11">Seattle-based Convoy</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/truck-driver-shortage-staffing-industry-problems-2018-9">New York-based Transfix</a>, say that automating brokerage could help truck drivers drive fewer miles without a load and wait less at warehouses for new loads. That helps truckers, many of whom work for themselves or for a small business, make more money. </p><p>As for Uber Freight, Driegert, who previously held leadership positions at Amazon and Coyote Logistics, said the company's technology is already slashing costs for customers. Carriers who work with Uber Freight report that they reduce empty miles by 20% to 30%, Driegert said.</p><p>"The tech we're building, it's very immediate," Driegert said. "Any shipper or any carrier can download it today and start seeing the difference."</p><p class="source"><span>Pitchbook; Andy Kiersz/Business Insider</span></p><p class="caption">More and more freight startups are vying for VC investment.</p><p>Freight-brokerage software, as well as buzzy data-visibility startups like Project44, are thus a safer bet for investors.</p><p>"It's a much lower-risk proposition for a VC to invest in an enterprise software company with proven customers and revenue, and a predictable growth curve, than something as exciting but unpredictable as self-driving technology," Gordon said.</p><h2>A $70 billion opportunity </h2><p>Of course, many folks are still pushing ahead in self-driving trucks. UPS recently acquired a minority stake in self-driving company TuSimple, and the startup has been piloting self-driving UPS shipments <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ups-driverless-trucks-tusimple-minority-stake-2019-8">since spring 2019</a>. Waymo began testing self-driving trucks in Arizona <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2020/01/23/waymos-self-driving-trucks-and-minivans-are-headed-to-new-mexico-and-texas/">in 2017</a>, and Elon Musk is gearing up to produce the Tesla Semi <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-semi-will-roll-off-production-line-in-2020-2020-1">sometime by the end of 2020</a>.</p><p>The revenue upside is clear. Autonomous vehicles would save the trucking industry billions and increase fuel efficiency, according to <a href="https://www.ttnews.com/articles/itech-trucking-may-save-168-billion-annually-driverless-vehicles-report-concludes">a Morgan Stanley report</a>. Labor savings alone could be $70 billion per year, and productivity would be up 30% because driverless trucks would run 24/7. </p><p>But trucking is technologically further behind than outsiders may understand. Drivers often pick up new jobs through calling individual brokerages, GPS tracking is still a novelty, and a law that requires drivers to keep a device to electronically log driving hours <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trucker-truck-driver-eld-salary-2018-5">was panned partially</a> because truckers felt they were being monitored too closely.</p><p>In the past two decades, just about every major industry has been digitally transformed - retail with online shopping, travel with online airline and hotel booking, and finance with digital stock brokers. Eric Berdinis, the group product manager at Uber Freight, said logistics is getting its belated digital revolution right now.</p><p>"It's the last kind of major industry where this transformation is happening," Berdinis told Business Insider.</p><p>Asad Hussain, a mobility-tech analyst at PitchBook, agrees.</p><p>"Our view is that self-driving trucks are coming, but it's going to take years for them to become widespread," he told Business Insider. "In the meantime, there's a lot of inefficiencies and excess costs and supply chains that can be addressed with the technologies of today."</p><p class="source"><span>Starsky Robotics</span></p><p class="caption">Self-driving truck startup Starsky Robotics shuttered in 2020 after raising more than $20 million in venture capital.</p><p>For that reason, it might be necessary for the public to roll back its expectations of what will come out of the trucking industry. An industry that's still working out how track the location of truck drivers isn't likely to going to be able to eliminate their roles altogether by virtue of technology.</p><p>Of course, the challenges of developing self-driving technology aren't limited to truck startups. <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2019/07/17/business/self-driving-autonomous-cars.html">As The New York Times reported last year,</a> the heads of companies like Ford have admitted that developing driverless cars was harder than they thought.</p><p>"There was this incredible optimism," Navigant Research's Sam Abuelsamid <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2019/07/17/business/self-driving-autonomous-cars.html">told the Times</a>. "Companies thought this was a very straightforward problem. <div type="image" title="Eleanor Chidi Michael Janet The Good Place finale NBC" height="840" width="1120" msid="78375683" hostid="261"></div><ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="5601" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="NBC">NBC</keyword>'s "<keyword id="8375938" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="The-Good-Place">The Good Place</keyword>" series finale was a perfect end to an imperfect show.</li><li>I've been dealing with depression, and its message of how we owe it to each other to try our best to be good has had a life-changing impact on how I live every day. </li><li>The pacing of later seasons and core romance of the show stumbled a bit.</li><li>Regardless of its imperfections, "The Good Place" had an incredible and literally life-changing message of what it means to be here on Earth.</li></ul><p>By the time the series finale of NBC's "The Good Place" aired on Thursday night, I was depressed. Not in the "the last few years have been a bummer" way, or the "a show I love is ending and I'm sad" way, but in the way that has led me to weekly therapy sessions and conversations with loved ones about their experiences on various antidepressants and other medication. </p><p>In the years leading up to this period of my life, I've watched a lot of <keyword id="6355065" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="TV">TV</keyword>. More than the average person, I would guess. Most of it was fantasy or drama, which I've always loved, with bleak settings and horrible truths laid bare.</p><p>But then I found shows I started referring to as "comfort TV." Shows like "The Great British Bake Off" or "Schitt's Creek," and, yes, "The Good Place." At first, I absorbed these shows piecemeal, watching a few episodes at a time with my eyes half on an iPhone game or the endless void of Twitter. </p><div type="image" title="the good place" height="630" width="840" msid="78375684" hostid="261"></div><p>By the end of the first season of "The Good Place," that mode of watching changed.</p><p>The series, created by Michael Schur ("The Office," "Parks and Recreation," "Brooklyn Nine-Nine"), started out simple enough. Eleanor Shellstrop (played by Kristen Bell) opens her eyes and is welcomed by a man named Michael (Ted Danson) into a bright office. She's informed that she has died, but thanks to her an incredibly selfless life on Earth, she's been granted eternity in an idyllic neighborhood called the Good Place. </p><p>The hiccup is that Eleanor is actually an incredibly mean and self-centered person, who knows she doesn't actually belong there. So she needs to try to blend in. She begins learning, with the help of her assigned soulmate Chidi, how to be a good person.</p><p>But by the season one finale, Eleanor uncovers a devastating twist. </p><div type="image" title="The Good Place Eleanor Michael Finale season one" height="1080" width="1440" msid="78375686" hostid="261"></div><p>Eleanor (and her new friends, Chidi, Jason, and Tahani) weren't in the Good Place at all. Michael is actually a demonic being from the Bad Place, and he'd been torturing them all along with a new psychological experiment.</p><p>All at once, "The Good Place" became a "phone down" series.</p><p>"The Good Place" was not only packed with <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-good-place-details-jokes-you-missed">references and background jokes you can't possibly catch if you're half-watching it</a>, but the second season shifted into compelling TV. It wasn't just clever and endearing and weird and fun, but also a deeper meditation on what it means to be a good person, and how and when that goodness can be rewarded. </p><p>"The Good Place" offered a lifeline to people like me who had started falling towards nihilism or were dealing with mental issues like depression (which has a clever way of convincing you to stop caring about much). </p><h2><strong>The few failings of 'The Good Place' were due to the high bar the show set for itself  </strong></h2><div type="image" title="Tahani Chidi Eleanor Jason season two The Good Place NBC" height="756" width="1008" msid="78375687" hostid="261"></div><p>"The Good Place" is not a perfect show.</p><p>After the seamless setup and twist of the first season, the writing team launched itself into new, thrilling heights with the season two, episode two installment, "Dance Dance Resolution." In one short arc, the show blew through literally hundreds of Good Place reboots.</p><p>While the whole first season was one long experiment with Eleanor and the other humans in their fake Good Place neighborhood, this single episode showed Michael wiping their memories and restarting the experiment 802 times.</p><p>Other series might have spent the entire second season with just one new version of Michael's test. But "The Good Place" threw that assumption out the window, ending this episode with our group of humans teaming up with their tormentor, the demon Michael. He realizes the experiment is a failure and needs their help covering up his mistakes.</p><p>This change-up was thrilling. It was like watching 10 episodes worth of material all in just over 20 minutes. It also might have set the bar too high, too soon. </p><div type="image" title="The Good Place season two NBC" height="1611" width="2149" msid="78375688" hostid="261"></div><p>Subsequent seasons were sometimes built around a few too many pivots. An all-mighty Judge (Maya Rudolph) was introduced. The humans were sent back to Earth, and then it turned into a cat and mouse game between the Bad Place demons and our imperfect heroes. </p><p>Along the way, Michael became friends with the humans, and Janet — the omniscient information database in the form of a human woman (D'Arcy Carden) — acquires more abilities than any other Janet ever created thanks to her many reboots. </p><p>The show started introducing problems and solutions one after the other, sometimes at the expense of character development. The Judge sets up rules for a new experiment testing the humans' ability to improve, but then all those rules get broken. A Bad Place demon infiltrates the humans' lives. Our protagonists realize the system is broken and set out to fix it. Hijinks ensue. Earth almost gets "canceled."</p><p>It's a lot for any show, but especially when it's filtered through only a few episodes.</p><div type="image" title="Eleanor Chidi The Good Place finale NBC" height="945" width="1260" msid="78375689" hostid="261"></div><p>These ups and downs and sideways turns were a lot. And a lot of it was fun. But the arcs weren't always as compelling as those early episodes.</p><p>I also never quite fell in step with the core romance of the series: Chidi and Eleanor. Like other critics, including Vulture's Angelica Jade Bastien (<a href="https://www.vulture.com/2020/01/the-good-place-eleanor-chidi-love-story.html">who outlined the weakness of their fictional romance here</a>), I would have preferred Eleanor and Chidi to simply be the best of unlikely friends. </p><h2><strong>Regardless of its imperfections, 'The Good Place' had an incredible and literally life-changing message of what it means to be here on Earth</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Chidi Chalkboard The Good Place finale NBC" height="840" width="1120" msid="78375690" hostid="261"></div><p>One thing about "The Good Place" will never cease to amaze me — that Michael Schur, after the success of "The Office" and "Parks and Recreation" and "Brooklyn 99," was given the opportunity to pitch virtually any show he wanted, and he chose <em>this.</em> A network comedy show carefully built up over a four-season arc which posits a simple truth: <strong>We owe it to each other, all of our fellow beings on this planet, to try our best to be good. </strong></p><p>"The Good Place" was a weekly reminder that there is goodness in all of us, even when it isn't readily available at the surface of our emotions. Even when we're hurting, and want to hurt back. Even when we feel nothing, and our minds have convinced us that to continue feeling nothing would be great, actually. </p><p>This show also managed to never feel preachy about its message. The writers couched all the potentially saccharine or sanctimonious dialogue in their believably earnest characters. The sweet came with plenty of bitter. Lofty philosophical ideals came with jokes about penis-flatteners and reminders that Eleanor Shellstrop is a "legit snack." </p><p>The message contained in the last two seasons of "The Good Place," in particular, was that humans inherently cannot be perfect during their time on Earth. It's all too messy. We are each bound to screw up one moral choice or the other, no matter how we try to lessen our carbon footprint or support local businesses or donate to a worthy cause or vote for the right candidate. </p><p>But we can <em>try. </em></p><div type="image" title="The Good Place" height="841" width="1122" msid="78375691" hostid="261"></div><p>Every one of us is capable of self-improvement. We make our lives better, and the lives of those we love better, by trying every day to be the best versions of ourselves there are. </p><p>We won't succeed every day. I don't. I doubt most people do. We're all selfish "benches" (the show was hilariously good at coming up with alternate "swear" words for its literally heaven-sent cast) or Arizona trash bags sometimes. </p><p>That's why the imperfections of "The Good Place" don't bother me all that much. It feels almost more natural that the show, which joked that "pobody's nerfect" on its first season, will have faults of its own. But I'm so very glad it tried, and believe the lasting effects of this message by showrunner Michael Schur will far outlast any gripes people may have.</p><h2><strong>The series finale was a perfect goodbye to an imperfect show</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Chidi Eleanor Paris dinner The Good Place finale NBC" height="840" width="1120" msid="78375692" hostid="261"></div><p>I sat down to write most of this before I had seen the series finale. In a way, I didn't need to know anything more than what was told to me by the time the extra-long final episode aired. Like the characters on the show, I knew what was next, and spent the week leading up to it trying to make my peace.</p><p>But that soul-bruising, starlight of a finale was everything I needed and more. The four humans, now living out hundreds of lifetimes (or Jeremy Bearimies, as "The Good Place" concept of time is called), one-by-one realized their time in existence was coming to an end. They leave on their terms, each passing through a gateway built in the middle of a redwood forest and dissolving into small beads of light and energy that filtered back into the universe. </p><p>Janet and Michael, our two non-human heroes, each get their own slice of new life. Michael is sent to Earth to finally live as a real, fallible person. Janet, the most intelligent and powerful nonhuman in existence, shows her most-human self yet when she tearfully says her goodbyes to Eleanor. Then our beloved heroine walks through the gate.</p><div type="image" title="Janet Tahani and Eleanor The Good Place finale NBC" height="840" width="1120" msid="78375695" hostid="261"></div><p>One of Eleanor's little beads of light travels back to Earth, and settles on the shoulder of a man who tosses some misdelivered mail into the trash (a classic former-dirtbag Eleanor move). But her little light seemingly inspires him to pull the envelope out of the trash and walk it over to the right building. </p><p>It's a letter for Michael. He's overjoyed. Unfolding the paper, we see a rewards card for Coyote Joe's Marketplace. </p><p>Michael, still giddy over the experiences of mundane humanity, earnestly thanks the stranger. Which is how, beyond all logic, I was left silently crying, tears streaming down my cheeks, as Michael uttered the ridiculous and moving final line of the series — "I'll say this to you, my friend, with all the love in my heart, and all the wisdom of the universe: Take it sleazy."</p><h2><strong style="background-color: #ffffff;">As a fan, I am left grappling with what I can take away from this wonderful show</strong></h2><p>Now I grieve for the loss of that little weekly light this show gave me. It's not that I can't, or won't, carry on without it. But it almost feels like my training wheels are off. Instead of pondering between episodes or seasons what new and inspiring moral twist lays ahead, I have the path clearly there: Wake up. Recognize how I'm feeling, be that depressed or optimistic or tired or fine or frustrated … and try anyways. Try to be good. </p><p>It's what I owe to myself, and, as Chidi Anagonye once said, "what we owe to each other."</p><p>Those words first came from American philosopher T. M. Scanlon. His ideas about moral contractualism were filtered through Michael Schur and his writing team and then spoken by actor William Jackson Harper as he played the character of Chidi. </p><div type="image" title="Eleanor What We Owe to Each Other The Good Place finale NBC" height="781" width="1041" msid="78375697" hostid="261"></div><p>On the series finale, Eleanor is the one who cites Scanlon as she tearfully accepts that she needs to let Chidi go. He was ready to end his existence before she was, and the many Jeremy Bearimies she'd spent with her philosophical studies had prepared her to do the right thing when it was most important. </p><p>And now, like Eleanor, I will carry those philosophical teachings with me, a little talisman to cling to on the dark days. "The Good Place" created an idea of the afterlife I want to believe is real, and it also showed me the very real way I can live here on Earth with more optimism and integrity. Even in the face of depression. Even when it feels like more than I'm capable of.</p><p>It's doubtful I'm alone in this. Millions of people, many of them who might not have realized they needed this life-raft of optimism in the form of a doofy NBC sitcom about an Arizona trash bag and her friends and a demon, now know more about moral philosophy and ethics than we probably ever would have in our life.</p><p>"The Good Place" was never about perfection. And we're all better for it. </p>

'The Good Place' wasn't a perfect show, but it changed my life anyways

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>AP Photo/Carolyn Kaster</span></p><p class="caption">President Donald Trump with Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly at the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey, November 20, 2016.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Two memos released by the Department of Homeland Security on Tuesday <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/dhs-memos-detail-aggressive-immigration-enforcement-and-speedier-deportations-2017-2" target="_blank">lay out guidelines</a> for the implementation of two executive orders President Donald Trump signed in January.</p><p>The memos detail the increased authority federal officials will have to detain and deport immigrants in the US illegally.</p><p>They also expand the pool of unauthorized immigrants subject to "<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/dhs-memos-detail-aggressive-immigration-enforcement-and-speedier-deportations-2017-2" target="_blank">expedited removal</a>" - that is, removal that bypasses court proceedings - and describe the resources that will be provided to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border protection agencies in order to fulfill the directives.</p><p>Also within the memos are <a href="https://www.propublica.org/article/trump-plan-deport-anyone-crossing-mexican-border-regardless-of-nationality?utm_campaign=sprout&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=facebook&amp;utm_content=1487626159" target="_blank">provisions</a> that seem likely to infuriate - and may well overwhelm - Mexican authorities.</p><p>Section H of the memo, titled "Implementing the President's Border Security and Immigration Enforcement Improvements Policies," details policies meant to streamline the deportation process for US authorities and to better use the resources required.</p><p>Provisions in the Immigration and Nationality Act authorize the Homeland Security Department "to return aliens arriving on land from a foreign territory contiguous to the United States, to the territory from which they arrived, pending a formal removal proceeding," the memo <a href="https://www.dhs.gov/sites/default/files/publications/17_0220_S1_Implementing-the-Presidents-Border-Security-Immigration-Enforcement-Improvement-Policies.pdf" target="_blank">states</a>.</p><p>"When aliens so apprehended do not pose a risk of a subsequent illegal entry or attempted illegal entry, returning them to the foreign contiguous territory from which they arrived, pending the outcome of removal proceedings saves the Department's detention and adjudication resources for other priority aliens," it <a href="https://www.dhs.gov/sites/default/files/publications/17_0220_S1_Implementing-the-Presidents-Border-Security-Immigration-Enforcement-Improvement-Policies.pdf" target="_blank">adds</a>.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>REUTERS/Jose Luis Gonzalez</span></p><p class="caption">People stand on each side of the border fence between Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, and El Paso, Texas, during a bi-national Mass in support of migrants in Ciudad Juarez, February 15, 2016.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>As detailed <a href="https://www.propublica.org/article/trump-plan-deport-anyone-crossing-mexican-border-regardless-of-nationality" target="_blank">by ProPublica</a>, which reported the contents of the memo on Monday, these provisions would mean many immigrants not originally from Mexico - Guatemalans, Honduras, Salvadorans, or Haitians, among others - would still be put in the hands of Mexican authorities, who would have to decide their next steps.</p><p>Many of those migrants have previously been detained in the US, where they are allowed to apply for asylum. Under Trump's plan, they would have to do so from Mexico, communicating with US immigration officials by videoconference, presumably using facilities the Mexican government would have to provide.</p><p>"This would say if you want to make a claim for asylum or whatever we'll hear your case but you are going to wait in Mexico," a DHS official <a href="https://www.propublica.org/article/trump-plan-deport-anyone-crossing-mexican-border-regardless-of-nationality" target="_blank">told</a> ProPublica. "Those are details that are being worked out both within the department and between the US government and the government of Mexico … there are elements that still need to be worked out in detail."</p><p>Mike Vigil, a former chief of international operations for the US Drug Enforcement Administration who maintains contact with Mexican officials, said authorities there were aware the US intended to do something like this - and they were not keen on it.</p><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>REUTERS/Lucy Nicholson</span></p><p class="caption">A woman carries bags across the international border from the US to Mexico in Nogales, Arizona, January 30, 2017.</p></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p>Mexican officials are "of the opinion that Trump also wants to send individuals that were born Central American through Mexico, and they opposed that," <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/mexico-preparations-for-mass-deportations-by-donald-trump-2017-2" target="_blank">he</a><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/mexico-preparations-for-mass-deportations-by-donald-trump-2017-2" target="_blank"> told Business Insider earlier this month</a>.</p><p>"They want the United States to fly them or do whatever they have to do, but they don't want them going into or through Mexico," said Vigil, author of "<a href="https://www.amazon.com/Metal-Coffins-Alliance-Cartel-Miguel/dp/0991582195?tag=bisafetynet-20" target="_blank">Metal Coffins: The Blood Alliance Cartel</a>."</p><p>The burden Trump - who has <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/mexico-protests-against-corruption-insecurity-pena-nieto-and-trump-2017-2" target="_blank">earned the scorn</a> of much of Mexican society - apparently wants to foist on Mexico in the form of foreign deportees has attracted indignation from the government and public alike.</p><p>But the plan poses the additional risk of sapping Mexico's limited resources and recreating the very problems that inspired Trump's harsh crackdown.</p><p>"The addition of millions of unemployed people to economies that are already struggling would only multiply desperation and violence in Mexico and Central America, where security, justice, and social-service institutions are already overwhelmed," Adam Isacson, the senior associate for <keyword id="6354810" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Defense">defense</keyword> oversight at the Washington Office on Latin America, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/trump-border-wall-deportation-immigration-plans-backfire-failure-2017-1" target="_blank">told Business Insider in January</a>.</p><p>"There would probably be chaos," Isacson said. Such policies in the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/problems-with-donald-trump-deportation-plan-and-gang-violence-2016-11" target="_blank">late 1990s and early 2000s sent many</a> migrants back to places like Honduras and El Salvador - economically and politically fragile countries where they had no real roots. They soon became fodder for gangs like Barrio 18 and MS-13.</p><p>The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/mexico-is-facing-a-cental-americans-migrant-crisis-2015-6" target="_blank">surge of Central Americans coming to the US</a> in recent years has been driven north by violence and instability - fostered in large part by those gangs - that is still present in the region. Their presence in Mexico has already taxed the resources of the government there.</p><p>Just as those deportees were vulnerable to criminal groups in northern Central America, waves of deportees returning to Mexico <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/trump-border-wall-deportation-immigration-plans-backfire-failure-2017-1" target="_blank">would be exposed to the criminal groups</a> that have proliferated in that country, vulnerable to exploitation, extortion, or worse.</p><p>Despite the stricter border policies Trump has promised, many of those deported, no matter their country of origin, would likely look to return to the US.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>AP Photo/Gregory Bull</span></p><p class="caption">A man who only gave his first name of Alfonso, center, leans against a mural depicting a coyote at a shelter for migrants after being deported, November 14, 2016, in Tijuana, Mexico.
