<p>Castro <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/ariel-castro-commits-suicide-jail-cleveland-kidnapper-2013-9">killed himself in his jail cell</a> shortly after he was <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/cleveland-kidnapper-ariel-castros-statement-in-court-2013-8">sentenced to life in prison plus 1,000 years</a>. He <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/cleveland-kidnapper-ariel-castros-statement-in-court-2013-8">made a sickening statement in court</a> during sentencing in which he appeared to blame the victims for their ordeal.</p>
<p>Prison guards were supposed to be checking on Castro, who was in protective custody, every 30 minutes.</p>
<p>But the <keyword id="15091" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Ohio">Ohio</keyword> Department of Rehabilitation and Correction's report says video shows that guards neglected to check on Castro at least eight times the afternoon and evening before his suicide, according to the AP.</p>
<p>There were warning signs that Castro was suicidal. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/ariel-castros-suicide-note-2013-5">Investigators found a 2004 suicide note</a> in his home in which he wrote about his lack of remorse for his crimes and wanting to kill himself.</p>
<p>Psychologists have said that his suicide <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/ariel-castros-suicide-hurts-victims-2013-9">only served to hurt the victims</a>, deprive them of justice, and show them that Castro was still in control of his own fate.</p>

Guards Watching Ariel Castro Reportedly Falsified Observation Logs Before He Killed Himself

<p>The Associated Press <a href="http://bigstory.ap.org/article/consultants-cleveland-kidnappers-death-suicide">reports</a> that the man who kidnapped three women and imprisoned them in his Cleveland home for about a decade was likely harassed by guards during his time in prison and that he had created a "shrine-like arrangement" of family photos in his cell before his suicide. His prison journal revealed his frustration with the harassment.</p>
<p>In August, Castro <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/cleveland-kidnapper-ariel-castros-statement-in-court-2013-8">was sentenced to life in prison</a> without parole plus 1,000 years. He did not appear remorseful for his crimes and insisted that he's not a violent predator.</p>
<p>The consultants did not find the prison staff at fault for Castro's suicide, but they did recommend that Ohio's prison department adopt "enhanced mental health staff involvement with 'high profile' inmates," The Columbus Dispatch <a href="http://www.dispatch.com/content/stories/local/2013/12/03/prison-suicide-report.html">reports</a>.</p>
<p>Guards <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/ariel-castro-prison-guards-reportedly-falsified-logs-2013-10">falsified logs that documented the observation of Castro</a> the day he committed suicide, according to a report the prison department released in October. They reportedly failed to check on him at least eight times.</p>
<p>But this did not contribute to Castro's death, the new report found, because guards checked on him minutes before he hanged himself.</p>

Report Says Cleveland Kidnapper Ariel Castro's Suicide Was 'Perhaps Inevitable'

<p>Castro was <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/ariel-castro-offered-plea-deal-2013-7">spared the death penalty</a> in exchange for pleading guilty to keeping 3 young women captive in his nightmarish house for a decade. We'll never know why prosecutors offered Castro the plea deal, but it's possible his victims Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus, and Michelle Knight didn't want to endure the pain of a trial.</p>
<p>Knight also said she didn't want him to die when she spoke at his sentencing. His <keyword id="6356238" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Suicide">suicide</keyword> has deprived her of that wish.</p>
<p>"The death penalty would be the easy way out. You don't deserve that," Knight said in court last month, <a href="http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-201_162-57596611/cleveland-kidnapping-victims-statements/">according to a CBS News transcript</a>. "We want you to spend the rest of your life in prison."</p>
<p>Now that Castro is dead, his victims may feel like he's not paying for his crimes, psychologist Linda Papadopoulos <a href="http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/09/04/20320005-ariel-castros-death-is-last-slap-to-victims-faces-psychologist-says">told NBC</a>.</p>
<p>"They very literally had a sentence dealt out to them ... They were literally, metaphorically, in every way imprisoned and held captive," Papadopoulos told NBC. "The idea that he did this on his terms again is going to make them, at least to some extent, to feel cheated."</p>
<p>Castro's suicide also doesn't make the Ohio prison system look great.</p>
<p>He was taken off suicide watch in June after authorities decided he wasn't a suicide risk, <a href="http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20731151,00.html">the Associated Press reported</a>. His defense lawyer Craig Weintraub <a href="http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2013/09/defense_attorney_claims_prison.html#incart_river">told the Cleveland Plain Dealer</a> prison officials refused to have his client evaluated for suicidal tendencies two weeks ago.</p>
<p>Instead of being on suicide watch, Castro was in "protective custody" that required officials to check on him every half-hour. He was found hanging in his cell around 9:20 p.m. We don't know the material he used to hang himself, but it's disturbing to think that officials didn't detect his preparations to commit suicide.</p>
<p>Ohio's department of corrections is investigating Castro's death, which came just weeks after an Ohio death row inmate made a noose and <a href="http://abcnews.go.com/US/death-row-inmate-kills-item-guards-authorities/story?id=19874373">hanged himself in his cell</a>.</p>

<p>In the note, Castro reportedly describes why and how he kidnapped his victims, partially blaming the three young women for getting into his car.</p>
<p>He also reportedly wrote about<span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> sex addiction, family problems and troubled childhood.</span></p>
<p>A reporter for 19 Action News <a href="https://twitter.com/EdGallek19/status/331957572473073665">tweeted yesterday</a> some details about <a href="https://twitter.com/EdGallek19/status/331957867563335680">how the women were kidnapped</a>. Amanda Berry and Michelle Knight apparently got into Castro's car when he offered them a ride, and Gina DeJesus was tricked because Castro is the father of a friend of hers.</p>

'I Am A Sexual Predator' Cleveland Kidnap Suspect Wrote In 2004 Letter

<p>Lane and two other prisoners escaped by building their own ladder and taking advantage of a broken security camera, those reports found.</p>
<p>Lane - a 19-year-old serving a life sentence for killing three classmates in a 2012 school shooting - and two other prisoners broke in to a locked crawl space to assemble the 13.5-foot ladder that allowed them to escape. They reportedly used old cabinets to build the ladder.</p>
<p>The inmates used the ladder to get to the roof of the building, jump onto the ground, and then run across a field. They were all captured by the next day.</p>

<p>You can see the inmates running across what looks like a field.</p>
<p>Lane and the two other prisoners who escaped - murderer Lindsey Bruce and kidnapper and robber Clifford Opperud - have since been transferred to a maximum-security prison. The prison they escaped from is a minimum-medium security prison that has a special unit for inmates that are likely to be targets of violence.</p>
<p>Lane was convicted of killing three people and wounding three others at Chardon High School in Ohio, where he was a student.</p>
<p>Inmate escapes are rare in Ohio, but the state's corrections department has had one other high-profile criminal slip from its grasp recently. Ariel Castro, the Cleveland man who kidnapped and held three women captive in his house for about a decade, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/ariel-castro-commits-suicide-jail-cleveland-kidnapper-2013-9">committed suicide last year</a> while serving his sentence in prison.</p>
