The recordings feature Carlson making numerous degrading statements about women, calling them "primitive" and comparing them to dogs, and defending the now-convicted child sexual abuser Warren Jeffs.</p><p>In a <a href="https://twitter.com/TuckerCarlson/status/1104926022376583169">statement</a>, Carlson refused to apologize, saying, "<span>Media Matters caught me saying something naughty on a radio show more than a decade ago. Rather than express the usual ritual contrition, how about this: I'm on television every weeknight live for an hour. If you want to know what I think, you can watch. Anyone who disagrees with my views is welcome to come on and explain why."</span></p><h2><span>The contents of the tapes are varied. They cover everything from Warren Jeffs to sex work.</span></h2><p><span>The tapes cover a wide range of topics, with Carlson critiquing the appearance of numerous women, contesting the prosecution of Warren Jeffs, and calling women "primitive."&#xa0;</span></p><p><span>In multiple clips, Carlson appeared to draw a distinction between child marriage and child rape.</span></p><p><span>"The rapist, in this case, has made a lifelong commitment to live and take care of the person, so it is a little different. I mean, let's me honest about it," Carlson argues about marriage, before clarifying that he's against the practice.</span></p><p><span>In a clip dated to 2009, Carlson is heard defending Warren Jeffs, who was awaiting trial at the time on sex crime charges related to his organized polygamist cult, that allegedly arranged marriages between adult men and underage girls. Jeffs was suspected of running the group from prison, but the case was eventually dismissed because two alleged victims backed out of testifying. In 2011, Jeffs was convicted on two counts of child sexual assault and sentenced to life in prison.</span></p><p><span>In the tape, Carlson says, "here's my point: If a guy wants to be polygamist, that's kind of his business."</span></p><p><span>When pressed about the age of the children involved, Carlson responded, "He's not accused of touching anybody; he is accused of facilitating a marriage between a 16-year-old girl and a 27-year-old man. That's the accusation. That's what they're calling felony rape. [crosstalk] That's bullshit. I'm sorry. I think the religion is ridiculous, I think it's a cult, I think it's totally immoral. But that's not the point. The question is, two questions -- one: Is this guy one of the top 10 most dangerous people in America? The answer is no, unequivocally no. And two: If you're, like, for the government butting out of the bedroom and for gay marriage, and for the right of strip clubs to operate unimpeded by governments - how exactly can you be against polygamy? On what grounds are you against polygamy? I don't get that."</span></p><p><span>In other segments, Carlson directly attacked and critiqued the appearance of specific women.</span></p><p><span>In 2010, Carlson said now Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan is "never going to be an attractive woman."</span></p><p><span>"I don't like [Kagan] and I wouldn't vote to confirm her if I were a U.S. senator. But I do feel sorry for her in that way. I feel sorry for unattractive women. I mean it's nothing they did. You know, she didn't. Nobody deserves that," he said.</span></p><p><span>In 2006, Carlson called TV host Alexis Stewart "extremely c--ty." The same year he called Ariana Huffington "a pig."</span></p><p><span>Carlson also made general statements about women, in 2006, saying "You just need to be quiet and kind of do what you're told," when talking about political discussions with women.</span></p><p><span>In 2007, Carlson compared women to dogs, saying, "they're extremely primitive, they're basic, they're not that hard to understand. The major restructuring would result in two separate entities - Mercedes-Benz Cars &amp; Vans and Daimler Trucks &amp; Buses. The two new entities, along with its separate financial services business, will be housed under the umbrella of the Daimler holding company. Daimler wants to split the car and truck businesses to grant them more independence and flexibility to explore new technologies, partners, and business models, as well as possibly spinoff additional business units, in the future. The two entities will also continue to partner on joint initiatives like developing self-driving technology for cars and trucks. Daimler hopes the move will help it defend its position as the world's largest manufacturer of luxury cars and heavy-duty trucks as adoption of electric drivetrains and autonomous technologies begins to pick up in the coming years.</li><li><strong>Meanwhile, Volvo has spun out its Polestar division into a separate brand that will focus on electric cars and shared mobility services,</strong> <a href="https://www.ft.com/content/25ca2381-148d-35c9-9e73-2da7fbeccd48">according to</a> The Financial Times. The new brand unveiled plans for three new electric vehicles that will be manufactured for its subscription car-sharing business, which allows customers to book its vehicles for temporary use through a mobile app for a monthly fee. The brand's three vehicles, dubbed the Polestar 1, 2, and 3, will be a hybrid coupe, a fully electric sedan, and a fully electric SUV. The sedan will be a direct competitor to Tesla's Model 3, and will launch in 2019.</li></ul><p><strong>The moves would make Daimler and Volvo the latest legacy auto company to revamp their organizations or spinoff new businesses to prepare for new tech trends in the auto space.</strong> Ford, for example, spun out its own mobility <a href="https://media.ford.com/content/fordmedia/fna/us/en/news/2016/03/11/ford-smart-mobility-llc-established--jim-hackett-named-chairman.html">unit</a> last year, while major auto supplier Delphi recently <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/transportation-and-logistics-briefing-delphi-reorganizes-for-digital-disruption-ford-and-lyft-team-up-on-self-driving-cars-mercedes-tests-drone-delivery-2017-9">reorganized</a> into two separate entities to support its autonomous software development and burgeoning electric drivetrain business. These legacy auto brands need to invest in digital initiatives to fend off new entrants like tech companies and startups, while still maintaining their legacy businesses. So they are often splitting up their businesses to pursue these competing objectives. Legacy automotive companies captured about 70% of the auto industry's profits in 2015, but that share could fall to less than 50% by 2030, with new entrants making up the difference, <a href="https://www.strategyand.pwc.com/reports/connected-car-2016-study">according to</a> PwC. Much of that shift in profits will be driven by increased consumer use of mobility services at the expense of car ownership rates, as well as sales of new technologies including autonomous systems.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table click-to-enlarge"><div><div class="image on-image"><a title_source="BI Intelligence" title_caption="" class="zoomin" href="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/59e67525ddd0632d008b468e-960/auto industry profits.png"><span class="sprites click-to-enlarge-icon" title="Click to enlarge"></span></a><p class="source"><span>BI Intelligence</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p><strong>GM TO TEST SELF-DRIVING CARS IN NYC: </strong>GM plans to test its self-driving electric Chevrolet Bolt hatchbacks in New York City starting early next year, which would make GM the first company to test self-driving cars in the city, according to <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/gm-to-test-fleet-of-electric-cars-in-new-york-1508212801">The Wall Street Journal</a>. The automaker's engineers are currently mapping a five square-mile area of Lower Manhattan where it plans to test the cars. In addition, GM will create a new team of engineers under its Cruise Automation division, which houses all its self-driving efforts, in the city.</p><p><strong>But New York is a much more difficult environment for the vehicles to handle, which is an indication that GM is aggressively accelerating its self-driving efforts. </strong>Cruise CEO Kyle Vogt told The Journal that the streets of New York present a much greater challenge for GM's self-driving vehicles than any other environment they've seen thus far. Lower Manhattan is significantly more densely populated than Phoenix and San Francisco, where GM has recently been testing its vehicles, so the cars will face more pedestrians, bikers, and other cars to navigate around. In addition, the cars will have to deal with inclement weather that they have not yet confronted, such as snow or ice on the roads.</p><p><strong>GM is clearly pushing to be one of the first companies to deploy self-driving cars. </strong>Last month, Deutsche Bank <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2017/09/25/gm-developing-autonomous-vehicles-at-a-fast-pace-deutsche-bank-says.html">predicted</a> that the automaker was only quarters away from deploying self-driving vehicles for ride-hailing purposes. By forcing its self-driving cars to confront new and challenging scenarios on the streets of New York, GM hopes to accelerate its software development and rush to market as soon as possible. </p><p><strong>WAYMO DETAILS ITS SAFETY PROCESSES FOR SELF-DRIVING TECHNOLOGY:</strong> Alphabet's Waymo subsidiary, an early leader in self-driving technology, released a 40-plus page <a href="https://waymo.com/safetyreport/">report</a> detailing all of the safety protocols of its self-driving technology. The report provides a comprehensive overview of how the company trains its software to safely navigate public roads, as well as how it handles cybersecurity, collision avoidance and reporting, and compliance with state and federal regulatory guidelines.</p><p><strong>Consumer acceptance remains a significant barrier to self-driving car adoption.</strong> Waymo is seeking to educate the public about the safety and benefits of its self-driving technology, which it began testing back in 2009. A recent Pew <a href="http://www.pewinternet.org/2017/10/04/americans-attitudes-toward-driverless-vehicles/">survey</a> of more than 4,000 American consumers found that more respondents were worried about riding in an autonomous vehicle than were enthusiastic. The top reasons that respondents weren't willing to ride in a self-driving car were fears around giving up control of the vehicle and safety concerns.</p><p><strong>Greater overall awareness about self-driving technology could help overcome the consumer acceptance barrier,</strong> <strong>as consumers who are more knowledgeable about self-driving cars tend to be more open to riding in them.</strong> Pew's survey found that 57% of respondents who said they had read or heard a lot about self-driving cars were willing to ride in one. That share fell to 38% among those who had read or heard little about them.</p><p><strong>In addition to the report, Waymo is also seeking to educate consumers through a recently <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-autos-selfdriving/alphabet-launches-u-s-ad-campaign-to-promote-driverless-car-safety-idUSKBN1CE24I">launched</a> ad campaign that highlights the safety features of its technology.</strong> This education effort also extends to the in-car experience, as Waymo's test vehicles proactively explain their driving decisions to passengers through audio and visual displays, the report said. Waymo is already providing rides to the public in the Phoenix area through its limited Early Rider <a href="https://waymo.com/apply/">program</a>, and recent media reports <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2017/10/03/alphabet-waymo-self-driving-car-service-fall.html">suggest</a> that the company may be nearing a commercial launch for a ride-hailing service there using its vehicles. That means consumers' safety concerns around self-driving cars are an increasingly pressing issue for Waymo to tackle.   </p><p><strong>In other news…</strong></p><ul><li><strong>Alphabet's Project Wing drone delivery arm has begun delivering burritos in partnership with Mexican restaurant Guzman and Gomez in Southeast Australia, </strong>according to <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2017/10/16/alphabets-project-wing-now-delivers-burritos-by-drone-in-southeastern-australia/?ncid=rss&amp;utm_source=tctwreshare&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+Techcrunch+%28TechCrunch%29&amp;sr_share=twitter">TechCrunch</a>. The moonshot project's drones are flying about 120 kilometers per hour, but won't be traveling more than about three kilometers. The company is using these initial efforts to collect data that it can use to improve its drones' flight capabilities.</li><li><strong>California-based dockless bike-sharing startup LimeBike raised $50 million in Series B funding </strong><strong>at an undisclosed valuation, </strong>according to <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2017/10/16/limebike-raises-50m-to-further-its-bike-sharing-ambitions/">TechCrunch</a>. Coatue Management led the funding round and was joined by Andreessen Horowitz, Franklin Templeton Investments, DCM Ventures, and GGV Capital. This new capital brings the company's total funding to $72 million. The company, which currently operates in 11 cities, will use the new capital to scale up and avoid getting crowded out by Chinese rivals like Mobike and Ofo that are moving further into the US.</li><li><strong>UberEats, the ride-hailing giant's food delivery arm, is on pace to earn about $3 billion globally in 2017, </strong>according to a new report from the <a href="https://www.ft.com/content/a40e56f2-b056-11e7-aab9-abaa44b1e130?mhq5j=e7">Financial Times</a>. The business unit is on pace to contribute more to Uber's revenue this year than ever before, but is still only profitable in 27 of the 108 cities it operates in. Additionally, the service faces steep competition from Grubhub and others in the food delivery space. TRANSPORTATION AND LOGISTICS BRIEFING: Daimler and Volvo eye digital futures - GM to test self-driving cars in New York - Waymo details its self-driving technology's safety protocols

<ul><li><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><strong>Apple's two most senior executives have answered questions about people overusing smartphones by suggesting they get an Apple Watch.&#xa0;</strong></li><li><strong>Studies show that college students who don't bring their smartphone to class score a full grade higher.&#xa0;</strong></li><li><strong>The WSJ, FT, and Guardian have all recently published long stories about how smartphones can be addictive.</strong></li><li><strong>Smartphone overuse is a growing PR problem for Apple, one they don't have a strong answer for yet.</strong>&#xa0;</li></ul><p>NEW YORK - Jony Ive, Apple's chief design officer, is clearly proud of his role in the invention of the iPhone, the device that spurred the smartphone boom, created multiple billion-dollar industries, and changed the world.&#xa0;</p><p>But he admits that too much of a good thing can be bad.&#xa0;</p><p>He pointed to "constant use" of an iPhone as one example of iPhone misuse during a public talk at the New Yorker TechFest on Friday, after interviewer David Remnick pressed him about if he ever felt ambivalent about inventing the iPhone.&#xa0;</p><p>Does Ive check his email and texts constantly, like many of us feel like we have to on our iPhones?&#xa0;</p><p>"With my new [Apple] Watch, I tend to not," he said.&#xa0;</p><p>His solution to the ever-increasing problem of device overstimulation - get another device made by Apple - directly echoes how Apple CEO Tim Cook handled <a href="http://fortune.com/2017/09/11/apple-tim-cook-education-health-care/">a similar question asked by Fortune</a>, which asked what he thought about the fact that iPhones could be a tool of "bad social behavior, like distractedness and children who stare for too long into a screen?"&#xa0;</p><p>"Our whole premise is to infuse our products with humanity," Cook said, before seguing directly into a sales pitch: "So if you think about what the Watch does ... it allows you to have a curated level of connection without being absorbed in it."</p><p>To me, Cook and Ive's answers are distinctly unsatisfactory - and Cook's is unusually unclear for him and jargon-heavy.</p><p>While neither executive is denying that there's a growing distraction problem created by smartphones, which Apple inspired, neither executive wants to really dwell on the issue.&#xa0;</p><p>The solution to a problem created by an Apple product should not be another Apple product - one that, in my experience testing an Apple Watch over the past three weeks, actually has contributed to my level of device distraction. (Apple Watch: Buzz. You've hit your move goal! Buzz. You've received a text message! Buzz. Here's a headline: Trump White House to repeal...)</p><h2>Starting to become obvious</h2><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>The negative externalities associated with how addictive and entertaining smartphones are is starting to become obvious. If you live in a city, for example, you're probably used to seeing "smartphone neck" - people buried in their iPhones on the subway and on the sidewalk.</p><p>The problem is clear to parents who sit down to dinner with their kids only to have them buried in Snapchat and "Clash Royale" the entire time.</p><p>It's clear to iPhone users who turn like Pavlov's dog any time they hear the iPhone notification sound, even when it comes from someone else's phone.&#xa0;</p><p>Eventually, Apple is going to have to come up with a clear and coherent answer to questions about iPhone overuse. It's going to be asked more and more of Apple executives at every public occasion.</p><p>Apple is fortunate right now, in that it's not facing the same level of scrutiny around&#xa0;<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-is-fighting-fake-news-2017-8">regulation and fake news issues</a> that its Silicon Valley neighbor Google and Facebook are. Apple is good at privacy and security, and it doesn't sell many ads at all.&#xa0;</p><p>But perhaps smartphone addiction is the big public-relations problem starting to appear on Apple's horizon: What can it do about the fact that its products are so good that its customers want to use them all the time?&#xa0;</p><h2>Over half of iPhone owners can't imagine life without it</h2><p>There's a lot of data about the increasing importance of a smartphone in the modern world - in one 2015 Gallup survey, 52% of iPhone owners agreed that they "can't imagine life without my smartphone," and 42% of smartphone owners would say that they would feel anxiety if they didn't have their phone for a day.&#xa0;</p><p>That stat was highlighted as part of <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/how-smartphones-hijack-our-minds-1507307811">a recent op-ed in the Wall Street Journal</a> by Nicholas Carr, which claimed that smartphones "hijack" people's minds.&#xa0;</p><p>An incomplete survey of study findings cited by Nicholas Carr:&#xa0;</p><ul><li>When someone's phone beeps or buzzes during a task, their work gets sloppier.</li><li>When a smartphone rings but it can't be picked up, people's blood pressure spikes and their pulse quickens.&#xa0;</li><li>When researchers left subjects' phones in plain view, they did significantly worse on tests.&#xa0;</li><li>A University of Chicago researcher says that the "integration of smartphones into daily life" appears to cause a "brain drain.&#xa0;</li><li>A <span>University of Arkansas</span> study found that students who didn't bring their phones to class scored <em>a full letter-grade higher</em>.&#xa0;</li></ul><p>Carr concludes:&#xa0;</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"Phone makers like Apple and Samsung and app writers like Facebook and Google design their products to consume as much of our attention as possible during every one of our waking hours, and we thank them by buying millions of the gadgets and downloading billions of the apps every year."</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">...</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"<span>As strange as it might seem, people's knowledge and understanding may actually dwindle as gadgets grant them easier access to online data stores"</span></p><p><span>The essay was widely praised by figures who see their lives in the studies cited, <a href="https://twitter.com/ariannahuff/status/916423343020085248">including Ariana Huffington</a>, who has been loudly making the claim that smartphones are hurting our ability to sleep.&#xa0;</span></p><h2>'Me and my phone, we are best friends, I'm closer to my phone than family'</h2><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>The fact that smartphones have downsides is clear from anecdotal evidence, as well.&#xa0;<p>One visceral example of these growing negative externalities is Kylie and <span>Kushana</span>, British 13-year-olds who were recently profiled as part of <a href="https://www.ft.com/content/7c972e2e-a88f-11e7-ab55-27219df83c97?mhq5j=e7">a Financial Times feature about kids and smartphones</a>.&#xa0;</p><p>"Me and my phone, we are best friends, I'm closer to my phone than family. It's the first thing I look at in the morning, and the last thing at night," Kushana told the Financial Times.&#xa0;</p><p>Kylie also said she feels odd without her iPhone.</p><p>"To be honest, I isolate myself when I'm at home. I'm always on my phone when I'm [there]. It's not always because I'm talking to someone, I just don't feel right without it," Kylie told the newspaper. "So I hang out on the couch with my phone and my headphones. I don't mind talking to real people as long as I have my phone next to me."&#xa0;</p><p>At one school in London, most students have an iPad by the time they're eight years old, and get their first smartphone when they become teenagers, the Financial Times reported, which is when "addictive attachment" starts.&#xa0;</p><p>Of course, smartphones aren't all bad - the FT reporting highlighted how the internet on a phone can help ostracized kids find a community across the world.&#xa0;</p><p>But there is a lot of evidence that the benefits of having the internet in your pocket come with significant downsides, and someone is going to have to pay for the reduction of attention.&#xa0;</p><p>Some&#xa0;ex-Silicon Valley designers&#xa0;put the blame on apps, like Justin Rosenstein, who invented the "like" button, and who asked his assistant to set up his iPhone to prevent him from downloading apps, according to a fantastic look at the <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2017/oct/05/smartphone-addiction-silicon-valley-dystopia?CMP=share_btn_tw">issues in The Guardian</a>. It's the app makers that are optimizing feedback loops to get their users liking or retweeting more.&#xa0;</p><p>But it is increasingly&#xa0;appearing like a lot of people will put the blame on Apple as well - it's part of the price to pay for having invented the smartphone and its huge media machine that puts iPhones on billboards and commercials around the world.&#xa0;</p><p>One engineer listed on Apple's patent for the push-notification, who no longer works at Apple, shrugged off responsibility in an interview with The Guardian, saying his invention is not "inherently good or bad" and that it's a "larger discussion for society."&#xa0;</p><p>That's fair - as Ive said last Friday, any tool can be misused, especially one as powerful as an iPhone.
