Apple announces 15 best apps of 2020 for iPhones, iPads and Macs

The Ministry of Electronics and IT has approved the applications of <keyword id="10591" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Samsung">Samsung</keyword>, <keyword id="6354671" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Foxconn">Foxconn</keyword> Hon Hai, <keyword id="274256" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pegatron">Pegatron</keyword>, Rising Star and <keyword id="1930805" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Wistron">Wistron</keyword> from among the international applicants for manufacturing of <keyword id="38260" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="20" keywordseo="mobile-phones">mobile phones</keyword> in India under the government's Production-Linked Incentive scheme. Out of these, Foxconn Hon Hai, Wistron and Pegatron are contract manufacturers for <keyword id="626905" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Apple-iPhones">Apple iPhones</keyword>. Apple (37 per cent) and Samsung (22 per cent) together account for nearly 60 per cent of global sales revenue of mobile phones and this scheme is expected to increase their manufacturing base manifold in the country, an official statement said. "The international mobile phone manufacturing companies that are approved under mobile phone (invoice value Rs 15,000 and above) segment are Samsung, Foxconn Hon Hai, Rising Star, Wistron and Pegatron," it said. The domestic companies approved for mobile phone manufacturing under the scheme are Lava, Bhagwati (<keyword id="71696" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Micromax">Micromax</keyword>), Padget Electronics, UTL Neolyncs and Optiemus Electronics. These companies are expected to expand their manufacturing operations in a significant manner. Further, six companies approved under the Specified Electronic Components Segment are AAT&amp;S, Ascent Circuits, Visicon, Walsin, Sahasra and Neolync. The PLI scheme for large scale electronics manufacturing notified on April 1, 2020, extends an incentive of 4-6 per cent on incremental sales (over base year) of goods under target segments that are manufactured in India to eligible companies, for a period of five years subsequent to the base year (FY2019-20). In total, the ministry has approved the applications of 16 companies under the scheme. As per the ministry, the companies approved under the scheme will bring additional investment in electronics manufacturing to the tune of Rs 11,000 crore. The companies will also generate more than 2 lakh direct employment opportunities in the next five years along with creation of additional indirect employment of nearly 3 times the direct employment, the statement said. "The PLI scheme has been a huge success in terms of the applications received from global as well as domestic mobile phone manufacturing companies and electronic components manufacturers," a tweet by the ministry quoted Union Minister for Electronics and IT, <keyword id="6354886" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ravi-Shankar-Prasad">Ravi Shankar Prasad</keyword>, as saying. The industry also has hailed the approvals. ICEA Chairman Pankaj Mohindroo said: "The approval for global companies is on expected lines. The approval for Indian companies is very fair and each company has got one approval." He noted that now the challenge would be whether these Indian companies build core design and brand capabilities and also scale up to become globally competitive, or some of them use it tactically and fade out with the PLI incentive. Google 'Nearby Sharing' feature to launch soon

Apple is reportedly planning to assemble its new iPhone SE in India. The iPhone maker has already asked one of its suppliers in <keyword id="1334" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="China">China</keyword> to start shipping components for the iPhone SE 2020 to its manufacturing partner Wistron in India, reports AppleInsider. Assembling the iPhone SE 2020 under the 'Make in India' initiative will help the company in avoiding the 20 per cent tax on its imported phones and reducing the price of the device in India. This news comes at a time when the Indian government has also started an initiative to increase manufacturing in the country. Apple is reportedly seeking to shift roughly a fifth of existing China-based output to India, which could equate to $40 billion in local manufacturing revenues over the next five years. Apple has been assembling some of its phones in India for a while via its two <keyword id="9441071" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="manufacturers-foxconn">manufacturers - Foxconn</keyword> and Wistron. Wistron also assembled the original iPhone SE in the country until 2019. Foxconn makes iPhone XR in India. The second-generation iPhone SE was launched in the country at a starting price of Rs 42,500, however the device is sold at $400 (around Rs 30,400) in the US. Apple is reportedly planning to assemble iPhone SE in India

Indian security researcher Bhavuk Jain has grabbed $100,000 (over Rs 75.5 lakh) from Apple for discovering a now-patched Zero Day vulnerability in the Sign in with <keyword id="9320578" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="apple-account-authentication">Apple account authentication</keyword>. The Zero Day vulnerability could have allowed a hacker to break into an Apple user's account who log into third-party apps like like Dropbox, Spotify, Airbnb and Giphy (now acquired by <keyword id="6354576" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="facebook">Facebook</keyword>) and more. Jain who holds a bachelor's degree in electronics and communication discovered Zero Day bug in 'Sign in with Apple' that affected third-party applications which were using it, and didn't implement their own additional security measures. "This bug could have resulted in a full account takeover of user accounts on that third party application irrespective of a victim having a valid Apple ID or not," Jain said in a statement on Saturday. "For this vulnerability, I was paid $100,000 by Apple under their <keyword id="9320577" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="apple-security-bounty-programme">Apple Security Bounty programme</keyword>," he announced. Jain is a full-stack developer interested mostly in mobile app development using React Native. He is currently a full-time bug bounty hunter "trying to make the internet a safer place for everyone". Launched in 2019, 'Sign in with Apple' is aimed to be a more privacy-focused alternative to third-party logins. Jain disclosed the flaw to Apple which led to an award from Apple's bug bounty programme. Apple has since patched the bug. According to Jain, the 'Sign in with Apple' works similarly to 'OAuth 2.0'. "There are two possible ways to authenticate a user by either using a JWT (JSON Web Token) or a code generated by the Apple server. The code is then used to generate a JWT," he explained. In the second step, while authorizing, Apple gives an option to a user to either share the Apple Email ID with the third party app or not. If the user decides to hide the Email ID, Apple generates its own user-specific Apple relay Email ID. "Depending upon the user selection, after successful authorization, Apple creates a JWT which contains this email ID which is then used by the 3rd party app to login a user," said Jain. He found that he could request JWTs for any email ID from Apple and when the signature of these tokens was verified using Apple's public key, they showed as valid. "This means an attacker could forge a JWT by linking any Email ID to it and gaining access to the victim's account," Jain noted. The impact of this vulnerability was quite critical as it could have allowed full account takeover. A lot of developers have integrated Sign in with Apple since it is mandatory for applications that support other social logins. Before patching the bug, Apple did an investigation of their logs and determined there was no misuse or account compromise due to this vulnerability. It had floated 4.6 million shares at $22 per share. So, if you had invested in one share of Apple at $22 in 1980, you would have had 56 shares now. Your $22 investment would have grown to $15,200 today. That is a whopping return of 69,000% over the course of the past 29 years. That being said, Apple’s journey so far has not been smooth. As is the case with every company, Apple has had its share of ups and downs. The device features a 10.2-inch Full HD+ (2160 x 1620 pixels) resolution Retina display with 264 PPI and 500 nits brightness. The device is powered by the <keyword id="3648665" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="apple-a10">Apple A10</keyword> fusion chip coupled with the M10 motion co-processor. It is available with two memory variants – 32GB and 128GB. The device also features an 8-megapixel primary camera at the back with 5P lens, f/2.4 aperture and a hybrid IR filter. <ul><li>HKmap.live uses crowdsourcing to track police vehicles, armed officers and incidents in which people have been injured.</li><li>People's Daily column accuses the tech giant of 'allowing its platform to clear the way for an app that incites illegal behaviour'.</li></ul>Chinese state media on Tuesday accused Apple Inc of protecting "rioters" in <keyword id="24349" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hong-Kong">Hong Kong</keyword> and enabling illegal behaviour, after the US-based technology giant listed on its <keyword id="115504" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="App-Store">app store</keyword> an application that tracks police activity in the city. Apple had previously rejected the app, called HKmap.live, but reversed its decision on Friday and made the programme available for download from the iOS App Store on Saturday, according to the program's developer. The developer declined to give a name when contacted via <keyword id="6354616" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Twitter">Twitter</keyword>, citing concerns of arrest by the government. The app relies on crowdsourced information to track the location of police presence in the city, alerting users to police vehicles, armed officers and incidents in which people have been injured. The app - a website version is also active - displays hotspots on a map of the city that is continuously updated as users report incidents. "By allowing its platform to clear the way for an app that incites illegal behaviour, [does Apple] not worry about damaging its reputation and hurting the feelings of consumers?" said a bellicose commentary published on the app of People's Daily, the Chinese Communist Party mouthpiece. The opinion piece, which was promptly republished by numerous other mainland Chinese outlets, was signed "Bolan Ping", an apparent pen name translating to "calming the waves" that has only emerged in recent weeks and that exclusively addresses issues relating to the unrest in Hong Kong. The piece made no mention of the fact that the app is also available to Android users via the Google Play store. Apple did not respond to requests for comment. The onslaught of vitriol against the company was the second within days against a prominent US entity with far-reaching economic interests in the Chinese market. Over the weekend, the National Basketball Association (NBA) found itself the subject of a vicious backlash in China over a post on Twitter by a team's general manager that seemed to support the Hong Kong protesters. Protests in Hong Kong, sparked in June by a now-withdrawn proposal to amend the city's extradition laws to allow transfers to the mainland, among other jurisdictions, have grown to include demands for pro-democracy measures. Now in their 18th week, they have also turned increasingly violent as authorities have pursued a zero-tolerance approach to demonstrations. In just the past week, two teenaged protesters were shot by live police rounds and Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor invoked emergency powers to ban the wearing of masks in public. Demonstrators have accused the police of using undue force in their handling of protests, and have incorporated an appeal for an official inquiry into allegations of police brutality into the movement's core demands. Bystanders and observers have also been swept up in the violent clashes between protesters and police, with one journalist permanently losing sight in her right eye after being struck in the face by a rubber bullet. Against such a backdrop, users of the HKmap.live app have praised it as a valuable tool for avoiding flashpoints and moving through the city safely. Commenting on the Google Play store, where the app has been downloaded over 10,000 times and has a 4.1 star rating, one user said the app had helped "make my way to [my] hotel safely and faster". But the People's Daily commentary argued that the app's primary purpose was to enable evade police, and accused Apple of "opening the door wide for those violently wreaking havoc on Hong Kong". Evoking China's historical suffering at the hands of foreign powers, the piece said that Apple's distribution of the "poisonous app" was a "betrayal of the Chinese people's feelings". Online commentators in China overwhelmingly appeared to agree; in under three hours the article received over 50,000 likes on Weibo, the Chinese social media platform, as well as scores of comments calling for boycotts of Apple. Such outcry echoed the recent vitriol against the NBA and, in particular, the Houston Rockets. Daryl Morey, general manager of the Rockets, tweeted an image that read "Fight for freedom, stand with Hong Kong" - a slogan frequently used by the protesters - on Saturday before quickly deleting it. The post drew outrage from the Chinese public, government officials and Chinese business partners of the league, and prompted the Chinese Basketball Association to suspend ties with the Rockets. As the NBA scrambled to distance itself from Morey's post, the league came under fire at home, with scores of US lawmakers accusing the association of sacrificing principle for profit. NBA commissioner Adam Silver has since sought to assuage such concerns, saying at a Tuesday news conference in <keyword id="4741" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tokyo">Tokyo</keyword> that the league supported Morey's right to freedom of speech.
