<keyword id="13473" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="north-korea" source="Orion">North Korea</keyword> fired a ballistic missile towards the <keyword id="2249865" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="east-sea" source="Orion">East Sea</keyword> on Wednesday, South Korea's military has announced. The Joint Chief of Staff announced the latest ballistic missile launched by Pyongyang without specifying further details, <keyword id="1248424" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="yonhap-news-agency" source="Orion">Yonhap News Agency</keyword> reported. The development has been confirmed by Japan's Prime Minister's office. Taking to its Twitter handle, Japan's PM office said, "North Korea has launched a suspected ballistic missile. More updates to follow." The latest ballistic missile launch comes after North Korea fired an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) and two suspected short-range ones toward the East Sea on November 3, South Korea's military said. The Joint Chiefs of Staff (<keyword id="270899" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="jcs" source="Orion">JCS</keyword>) said it detected a long-range ballistic missile launch from the Sunan area in Pyongyang around 7:40 am (local time). It further announced that the two short-range ballistic missiles (SRBMs) were launched from Kaechon in South Pyongan Province at around 8:39 a.m (local time). As per the Yonhap News Agency report, the long-range missile covered a distance of around 760 kilometres. The long-range missile flew at a top speed of Mach 15 and two short-range ballistic missiles flew for around 330 kilometres at a maximum height of about 70 kilometres at a top speed of Mach 15, South Korea's Joint Chief of Staff (JCS) said. It further announced that South Korea has strengthened their surveillance and vigilance while maintaining a readiness posture in coordination with the United States. Pyongyang's missile launch came a day after it shot more than 24 missiles, which is reportedly the biggest-ever barrage in a single day. One of the missiles flew southward past the de facto maritime inter-Korean border for the first time since the Korean war. "Our military has beefed up surveillance and vigilance while maintaining the readiness posture in close cooperation with the U.S.," the JCS said in a statement. The United States and South Korea have repeatedly condemned North Korea's ballistic missile launch and they even conducted a joint military exercise in November. North Korea launches ballistic missile towards East Sea, says South Korean military

<keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> has paid its 2023 annual contribution of $30.54 million to the UN budget, according to a UN <keyword id="6357308" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="spokesperson" source="Orion">spokesperson</keyword>. India was among the 43 countries on its "honour roll" so far for having paid their assessments to the budget, <keyword id="2143550" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="stephane-dujarric" source="Orion">Stephane Dujarric</keyword>, the Spokesperson for Secretary-General <keyword id="300649" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="antonio-guterres" source="Orion">Antonio Guterres</keyword>, said on Monday. India's contribution was received on Friday according to the UN. India's share is assessed at 1.044 per cent of the total budget of $3.217 billion. Although that works out to $33.592 million, it is given a credit of $3.052 million that the UN collects from its Indian employees in lieu of the income taxes they would have had to pay. The rate of budget assessments for each of the 193 member countries is worked out by a complex formula that is based on gross national income (which is the gross domestic product plus income from abroad), debt burden and an adjustment for per capita income using the principle of the "capacity to pay". Although India boasts of being the world's fifth-largest economy, its assessment is brought down by the low per capita income diminishing its "capacity to pay". This puts its assessment lower than some fellow developing countries like Brazil with an assessment of 2.013 per cent or <keyword id="3746" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mexico" source="Orion">Mexico</keyword> at 1.221 per cent. The assessment for the US is 22 per cent, which is the highest that can be set for a country, working out to $707.897 million. <keyword id="1334" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="china" source="Orion">China</keyword> comes next with an assessment of 15.254 per cent or 490.83 million. Britain, the size of whose economy was overtaken by India, pays $140.775 million or 4.375 per cent to be the fifth-largest contributor with <keyword id="6355311" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="japan" source="Orion">Japan</keyword> being the third and <keyword id="87" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="germany" source="Orion">Germany</keyword> the fourth. In addition to the main UN budget, countries also have to make contributions based on similar formulas to the budgets for capital, peace-keeping and international tribunals. Asserting that a woman or a girl is killed every 11 minutes by an intimate partner or a family member, UN chief <keyword id="300649" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="antonio-guterres" source="Orion">Antonio Guterres</keyword> has said that violence against them is the most pervasive "human rights violation" in the world and called on governments to implement national action plans that tackle this scourge. Secretary General Guterres made these remarks ahead of the International Day for the 'Elimination of Violence against Women' which is observed on November 25. "Violence against women and girls is the most pervasive human rights violation in the world. Every 11 minutes, a woman or a girl is killed by an intimate partner or family member - and we know that other stresses, from the COVID-19 pandemic to economic turmoil, inevitably lead to even more physical and verbal abuse," Guterres said. Guterres' remarks come in the backdrop of the recent <keyword id="15514202" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="shraddha-walker" source="Orion">Shraddha Walker</keyword> murder case that has shocked India with its brutal details. He said women and girls also face rampant online violence, from misogynistic hate speech to sexual harassment, image abuse and grooming by predators. "This discrimination, violence and abuse targeting half of humanity come at a steep cost. It limits women's and girls' participation in all walks of life, denies their basic rights and freedoms, and blocks the equal economic recovery and sustainable growth our world needs," he said. The UN chief gave a clarion call to all to "consign violence against women and girls to the history books," saying now is the time for transformative action that ends violence against women and girls. He said this means governments designing, funding and implementing national action plans to tackle this scourge, involving grass-roots and civil society groups at every stage of decision-making and ensuring that laws are implemented and respected, so survivors see their rights to justice and support upheld. Calling on governments to increase funding by 50 per cent to women's rights organisations and movements by 2026, Guterres urged all to take a "stand and raise our voices in support of women's rights" and proudly declare that "we are all feminists." He called for supporting public campaigns that challenge patriarchal norms and promote different forms of masculinities that reject misogyny and violence. Noting that this year's theme on an international day is 'UNITE: Activism to End Violence Against Women and Girls', Guterres said it means standing with activists around the world who are calling for change and supporting survivors of violence. Even if the number of daily COVID cases declined in many parts of the world, it is not over yet. “But it would be a grave mistake to think the pandemic is over,” warned Guterres. He also warned that this ‘two-tiered’ recovery could further bring new variants in the world, which would lead to furthermore restrictions, lockdowns and problems. At the end of his speech, he asked people to take the pandemic seriously and take necessary precautions to end the pandemic once and for all. “Re-dedicate ourselves to ending this pandemic... and closing this sad chapter in humanity’s history, once and for all,” he concluded.
