The complex is so big and unusual, <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052702303492504579111792834660448.html">The Wall Street Journal likened it to a "company town."</a> Company towns were created by employers to house factory workers in the early 20th century.

The project, called <keyword id="1890483" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Anton-Menlo">Anton Menlo</keyword>, will cost an estimated $120 million over 10 acres of land off Highway 101 in Menlo Park, California. The sprawling 630,000 square-foot Facebook town will be walking and biking distance to Facebook's headquarters. There will be 35 studios, 208 one-bedroom apartments, 139 two-bedroom apartments, and for top Facebook employees, there will be 12 three-bedroom apartments.
St. Anton Partners is the landowner and developer. It is constructing the project, not Facebook. The complex is being designed by architecture firm KTGY Group, Inc. But Facebook is funding 15 units which will be offered as low-income housing. Those won't be affected by skyrocketing Silicon Valley rent for the next 55 years. 
Ground will be broken this month and construction will last 24 months.
When all is said and done, the Facebook-St. Anton Partners complex will have 13,200 square-feet dedicated to the following <keyword id="69022" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="perks">perks</keyword> (the most impressive have been bolded):
On-site "grab &amp; go" convenience store, on-site café, on-site sports pub, bicycle repair shop with on-site storage, pet spa with doggy day care, pet walking services, outdoor dog park and run, concierge services - dry cleaning and package drop off, indoor/outdoor wellness, yoga and training facility with personal training, resort-inspired pool, spa and cabana area, iCafe - new generation community business facility, clubhouse with full kitchen and cooking area including outdoor facilities, and a large rooftop entertainment deck with three-themed areas.

Facebook already has some of the best employee perks in the world, from <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/maternity-paternity-leave-policies-at-google-facebook-yahoo-twitter-microsoft-2013-8">four months of maternity and paternity leave</a> to on-site barber shops. Now it's creating the ultimate perk: housing.
Facebook is building what the Wall Street Journal dubs a small <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article_email/SB10001424052702303492504579111792834660448-lMyQjAxMTAzMDAwMjEwNDIyWj.html">"town" for employees, Anton Menlo.</a> The housing complex will cost $120 million to build and it will create 394 units, WSJ's Reed Albergotti reports. The town will be 630,000 square-feet and it won't just include apartments. It will have shops, like a local sports bar and a doggy day care facility. The mockup also shows an outdoor community pool. 
Anton Menlo will be walking distance - or a five minute bike ride - from Facebook's Menlo Park headquarters. Facebook is working with St. Anton Partners, a Bay area developer. Most units will belong to Facebook employees and will be sold at market rates, but 15 will be open to non-Facebook employees and reserved for low-income housing. It's not clear when the complex will be ready for residents.
Other tech companies have started merging home and office life. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/evernote-pays-for-its-employees-to-have-their-houses-cleaned-2012-10">Evernote offers a bi-monthly cleaning service for all of its employees</a>, for example. But Facebook's new initiative is on a whole different level. 
Facebook wants to make employees feel like they're living and working on a college campus, not in a corporate environment. That's as nice a gesture as it is scary. Now employees really won't be able to escape their employer's influence, even in the comfort of their homes.
