With those moves, we believe Path CEO <keyword id="274435" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Dave-Morin">Dave Morin</keyword> is sending a signal about his ambitions for long-term independence.
AllThingsD reports that Path <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130306/path-hires-ex-google-lytro-finance-head-as-new-cfo/">just hired Kim Jabal</a>, formerly of camera maker Lytro, as its CFO. That's a high-level position; most startups make do with a VP of finance.
And Business Insider has learned that Path has also hired Anne Toth, a former chief privacy officer at Yahoo and Google, as a consultant.
She's going to <a href="http://blog.path.com/post/42023928427/path-and-the-ftc">work on compliance issues with a settlement the company reached with the Federal Trade Commission</a>. The FTC levied an $800,000 fine on the startup after it was found uploading users' address books without their explicit consent and allowing children under the age of 13 to sign up for accounts.
Morin has <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/path-ceo-dave-morin-hbo-nbc-2013-2">talked about his plans to make money directly from Path users via subscriptions</a>, rather than from advertising, though it hasn't unveiled any subscription products yet. (It sells filters for enhancing photos, though in our experience of using Path, we've never seen anyone use them.)
Path, which limits users to mobile devices where they can keep up with a maximum of 150 friends, may have an opening given Facebook fatigue. Celebrities and teens, we hear anecdotally, are <a href="http://www.forbes.com/sites/bruceupbin/2013/03/06/five-reasons-bold-faced-names-should-be-using-path/">flocking to the service</a> as an alternative to overexposure on social networks where everything is either public by default, like Twitter, or privacy settings are simply too confusing.
It has nearly 6 million registered users, about a quarter of whom are active at least once a week, and has raised $42 million from investors.
And the fact that Path is making high-profile hires like Jabal and Toth shows that the company is staffing up for big ambitions.

Toth cut her teeth working on privacy policies for Yahoo, went on to do the same for Google, then went out on her own consulting before landing at Slack.We've also learned that Creative Director Mark Lawson has left after about eight months on the job. Actor Armie Hammer deleted his Twitter account after calling the writer of a negative article about him 'bitter'

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>Legendary venture capitalists Ron Conway and Fred Wilson kicked off TechCrunch Disrupt NY on Monday morning.In a talk moderated by TechCrunch's Kim-Mai Cutler, the two venture capitalists talked about government regulation of tech companies like Airbnb, and how tech can have an impact on philanthropy and local community.In San Francisco, <a href="http://www.sfgate.com/business/article/Airbnb-foes-mount-campaign-for-SF-ballot-measure-6231816.php">a group called Share Better SF - composed of residents, housing activists, and neighborhood organizations - is trying to get a measure on the ballot</a> in November to put a cap on vacation rentals at 75 nights per year. Hosts would receive steep fines for not complying with the rules, should they be made law. Perhaps unsurprisingly, both Wilson and Conway seem to view the measure as anti-innovation. "The notion that Airbnb is part of the problem is false. It's just a part of the argument from people who don't understand the sharing economy," Conway said. "Why should the government be involved in that?"The new measure, were it to be passed, would potentially be a threat to Airbnb's business model. In the face of government regulation, Conway and Wilson had different opinions on whether a company like Airbnb should hand over anonymized data about users to try assuaging governments."Private companies should not be forced to hand over data about their users," Conway said. But Wilson disagreed, saying that there's a limit to what companies can do without violating the trust they have with their users, but the more that companies like Airbnb can be up front with anonymized data without outing any specific user, the better."If they did hand over the data they could resolve a lot of concerns. Companies could use data to make clear that the fears are unfounded," he said. "I would encourage companies to share data as much as possible." Airbnb initially fought a <a href="http://money.cnn.com/2014/05/21/technology/social/airbnb-new-york/"> subpoena issued by the New York attorney general last May</a>. The company ended up anonymizing and submitting data about its New York City rentals. In October, New York Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman released a report called "<a href="http://www.ag.ny.gov/pdfs/Airbnb%20report.pdf">Airbnb in the city</a>." In it, he concluded that 72%, or more than 25,000 of short-term rentals through Airbnb seem to violate New York zoning regulations and other laws. More than 140 tech leaders agree: 'Trump would be a disaster for innovation'

Rick Snyder (R) first ran for the office in 2010, he championed himself as "one tough nerd." (It's even his <a href="https://twitter.com/onetoughnerd" target="_blank">Twitter handle</a>.)For someone who was experienced with computers and accounting and campaigned on a moderate platform, the "nerd" moniker worked.&#xa0;The former Gateway executive and venture capitalist had never previously run for political office prior to his 2010 campaign, but it didn't stop him from winning the election in a landslide.&#xa0;"One tough nerd" was in office.Fast-forward more than five years later.Snyder - whose main appeal was that he could fix Michigan's sagging economy in the aftermath of the nationwide economic collapse of 2008 -&#xa0;has enraged faced&#xa0;a barrage of across-the-board for his handling of the water crisis in Flint, whether they be a part of his constituency or Democratic&#xa0;presidential candidates <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/why-people-think-rick-snyder-must-resign-2016-1">like Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont) and Hillary Clinton</a>.The crisis in Flint is nearly unfathomable to imagine&#xa0;in modern America.An entire city <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/why-people-think-rick-snyder-must-resign-2016-1">was drinking and bathing in&#xa0;water</a> that had been contaminated&#xa0;with lead after the state switched its water supply to the Flint River in April 2014. The Flint River contained more corrosive water than what was being sent to the city from Detroit's water supply, and it&#xa0;ended up causing the lead from an aging pipe system to be leached.Even after complaints the water tasted and smelled bad, caused rashes, and was shown to contain high levels of lead, the state took months to act, not making its first moves until last October and not declaring a state of emergency until January. Clinton has chastised Snyder for the state government's&#xa0;inaction, and Sanders has called on him to resign.A water expert called the crisis one of the greatest American drinking water disasters in history, according to&#xa0;<a href="http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/news/who-poisoned-flint-michigan-20160122?page=2">Rolling Stone</a>.Snyder finds himself&#xa0;face-to-face with a situation that will play perhaps the defining role in his governorship."The&#xa0;tragedy that we're seeing in Flint is a man-made crisis," White House press secretary Josh Earnest said Thursday.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div><h2>How he got here</h2>Snyder's appearance on the political scene came after more than a quarter century in the business world.His career started with a near decade-long stint at the Detroit office-accounting firm Coopers &amp; Lybrand.&#xa0;That was followed by a stint in California working as executive vice president before he was promoted to become the president and chief operating officer of Gateway.&#xa0;He later cofounded a venture capital fund in Ann Arbor, hometown to his alma mater, the University of Michigan.&#xa0;His first political stunt came early in the 2010 election process, as Snyder was competing against four other contenders for the Republican nomination in a crowded primary. He ran an ad during the Super Bowl declaring himself "One Tough Nerd" - the phrase Snyder has come to embrace so much, he even uses it as his Twitter handle.It worked. Snyder won the primary with 36% of the vote. He later won the general&#xa0;election with 58% of the vote, promising to bring Detroit back from bankruptcy and the state back from the economic disaster that had gripped much of the country.He's clashed with <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-fix/wp/2016/01/19/meet-rick-snyder-the-governor-at-the-center-of-the-flint-water-crisis/">both the right and the left</a> in his state. The former, at times, has criticized him for defending Common Core. He has been disparaged as not sufficiently conservative on social issues, such as when he <a href="http://www.mlive.com/politics/index.ssf/2012/12/abortion_rick_snyder_michigan.html" target="_blank">vetoed an abortion bill</a>.&#xa0;And he has talked about the need to welcome more immigrants, though&#xa0;he was also the first governor to suggest a pause on Syrian refugees being admitted to the country <a href="http://www.npr.org/2015/11/20/456713306/governor-who-started-stampede-on-refugees-says-he-only-wants-answers">last fall</a>.For their part, Democrats have been enraged with Snyder over&#xa0;right-to-work legislation and other unfriendly union policies, in addition to the handling of the most recent public health catastrophe in Flint.He is often&#xa0;credited with helping Detroit to emerge from bankruptcy. But Snyder nevertheless saw his approval ratings plunge,&#xa0;<a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-fix/wp/2016/01/19/meet-rick-snyder-the-governor-at-the-center-of-the-flint-water-crisis/">The Washington Post reported</a>, and he barely won re-election in 2014.Snyder came up as a potential vice-presidential nominee&#xa0;for 2012 Republican nominee Mitt Romney, whose father George was once the governor of Michigan, before Romney ended up tapping then-US Rep.&#xa0;Paul Ryan (R-Wisconsin).His name was floated around as a possible 2016 candidate, but decided against entering the crowded field."I'm very happy being governor," he <a href="http://time.com/3630172/gov-rick-snyder-explains-how-detroit-was-saved/" target="_blank">told Time in December 2014</a>.Now, after <a href="http://www.detroitnews.com/story/news/politics/2016/01/19/snyder-requests-emergency-aid-flint/79018348/">promising</a> to "fix" the problems in Flint in his State of the State address Tuesday, he's about to embark on arguably the greatest test of his governorship.&#xa0;<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div><h2>His biggest crisis</h2>Problems with Flint's water supply were discussed within Snyder's office immediately after the city switched to the Flint River in April 2014.An email recently released by the governor's office contained&#xa0;a press release from the announcement of Flint's switch that&#xa0;made note of concerns from residents about the quality of the water. They were shot down as "myths."<div></div>On October 1, two months after the state "quietly" delivered 1,500 water filters to the city and almost 18 months after the initial switch, Snyder first said he was aware of the problems with Flint's water supply, <a href="http://www.freep.com/story/news/local/michigan/2016/01/12/why-did-snyder-help-bring-filters-flint-august/78673474/">The Detroit Free Press reported</a>.The state did not immediately instruct residents to stop drinking the water without a filter, however. It wasn't until January that the state began delivering water bottles and filters door-to-door, and Snyder declared a state of emergency in the area&#xa0;earlier this month, on January 5.It wasn't until nine days after that announcement, on January 14, that Snyder asked Obama to declare a federal state of emergency, which <a href="http://www.freep.com/story/news/local/michigan/2016/01/16/president-obama-declares-emergency-flint/78898604/">freed up to $5 million</a> in federal aid for Flint. The state previously allocated $10 million to assist Flint, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/r-michigan-governor-apologizes-for-states-handling-of-flints-water-2015-12">Reuters reported</a>.Free Press columnist&#xa0;Nancy Kaffer&#xa0;<a href="http://www.freep.com/story/opinion/columnists/nancy-kaffer/2016/01/11/flint-lead-water/78629628/">found</a> that an analysis claiming&#xa0;Flint's water was safe last summer was deemed to be flawed by a number of state staffers - but was still subsequently promoted by the state. Another analysis&#xa0;that raised more concerns about the contaminated water supply was "disregarded," according to Kaffer.&#xa0;Recently, it's become clear that a "dramatic"&#xa0;increase in cases of Legionnaires disease, a severe form of pneumonia, in Flint are likely connected to the tainted water supply, according to&#xa0;<a href="http://www.freep.com/story/news/local/michigan/2016/01/13/snyder-flint-area-has-seen-spike-legionnaires/78750610/">the Free Press</a>, which cited officials from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.&#xa0;At least eight petitions to recall Snyder were filed with Michigan's secretary of state as a result of the water crisis, <a href="http://www.freep.com/story/news/politics/2016/01/14/8-more-recall-petitions-filed-against-gov-snyder/78793002/">the Free Press reported</a>&#xa0;Thursday."I think every single American should be outraged," Clinton <a href="http://www.cnn.com/2016/01/18/politics/flint-water-democratic-debate-clinton-sanders-snyder/">said</a>&#xa0;during Sunday night's Democratic debate. "We've had a city in the United States of America where the population, which is poor in many ways and majority African-American, has been drinking and bathing in lead-contaminated water. And the governor of that state acted as though he didn't really care."Sanders then&#xa0;<a href="%C2%A0http://www.businessinsider.com/why-people-think-rick-snyder-must-resign-2016-1">added</a>:&#xa0;"Secretary Clinton was right and what I did, which I think is also right, is demanded the resignation of the governor.&#xa0;A man who acts that irresponsibly should not stay in power."Adding fuel to the fire, In a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/rick-snyder-flynt-michigan-emails-2016-1">recently released email</a> from September 25 - just days before Snyder (R) said he first became aware of the severity of the water crisis in Flint - his former chief of staff Dennis Muchmore wrote that he "can't figure out why the state is responsible."The email came a day after doctors reported high levels of lead in Flint children. Muchmore said the responsibility fell to local government, per emails which were released by Snyder Wednesday, and added the issue had become a "political football."Muchmore did note that&#xa0;former state Treasurer Andy Dillon signed off on the city's plans to build a water pipeline from Lake Huron, which required a temporary switch to the Flint River during construction."We're not able to avoid the subject," he explained.&#xa0;<div></div>Muchmore&#xa0;later told the governor that residents were "caught in a swirl of misinformation" about lead contamination and that it was up to city and county leaders to confront the issue."Of course, some of the Flint people respond by looking for someone to blame instead of working to reduce anxiety," Muchmore wrote. "We can't tolerate increased lead levels in any event, but it's really the city's water system that needs to deal with it."&#xa0;He&#xa0;also said two state agencies and the US Environmental Protection Agency could not "find evidence of a major change" in lead levels.Once Snyder said as soon as he became aware of elevated lead levels in people's blood, he took action. He insisted to <a href="http://time.com/4182474/michigan-governor-defends-handling-of-flint-water-crisis/">Time</a>&#xa0;he was not ignoring the emergency."There was some time period where we were offering filters, we were working hard to get water," he <a href="http://time.com/4182474/michigan-governor-defends-handling-of-flint-water-crisis/">told Time</a>. "All these kind of things. But not enough of it was being accepted. Now we're to the point now where hopefully we're fully engaged and have everyone working hard to make sure everyone in Flint has access to a water filter."The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, which told residents the water was safe despite contradictory reports, was at fault&#xa0;of&#xa0;"being probably too technical in their interpretation of things or following a traditional pattern of doing things rather than stepping back to look at what else you might see in data," Snyder said.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>Flint&#xa0;has been switched back onto Detroit's water supply until the lead contamination problem&#xa0;is solved. The head of Michigan's Department of Environmental Quality resigned as a result of the crisis.Snyder <a href="http://www.nationaljournal.com/s/352793/snyder-calls-flint-his-katrina-catastrophic-failure-leadership">admitted to the National Journal's Ron Fournier</a>&#xa0;that the&#xa0;water crisis is a stain&#xa0;against his governorship that's appropriately been compared to&#xa0;former president George W. Bush's handling of Hurricane Katrina in 2005.He "should have been more pro­act­ive," he said, adding, "It's a dis­aster."Asked if he believed people calling for his resignation are making a "legitimate request," Snyder later said he won't be stepping down as governor.&#xa0;"I want to solve this prob­lem," he said. "I don't want to walk away from it."
