The newly designed U-WIN platform for managing immunisation and intensified efforts of the Mission Indradhanush will be rolled out expeditiously throughout the country, Sitharaman said. "Upgradation of anganwadi centres under <keyword id="20414158" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="saksham-anganwadi" source="keywords">Saksham Anganwadi</keyword> and Poshan 2.0 will be expedited for improved nutrition delivery, early childhood care and development," she stated. She termed the decision as a necessary safety measure required for children amid the sudden spike in cases. She said ration and other materials for children and other beneficiaries will continue to be distributed from door to door through anganwadi workers and helpers so that nutritional support to the beneficiaries would not be affected due to the shutdown. She also instructed all to follow every health protocols like wearing of masks, washing hands and maintaining social distancing.

Similarly, in the tribal regions of Chhattisgarh, a collective effort by local community leaders has revitalized traditional agricultural practices. The community has reintroduced indigenous crops like millets and pulses, which are more resilient to the changing climate and require fewer resources to cultivate. These crops are rich in essential nutrients and have historically been part of the local diet. The community's efforts have not only preserved these traditional foods but also improved the nutritional status of the population, particularly children and women. The qualitative study by NGO Vitamin Angels India and supported by UNICEF, conducted across several states, found that communities with strong local leadership and grassroots initiatives showed significant improvements in diet diversity and nutritional outcomes. According to government data, about 17% of children in the age group of 0-5 years are underweight, while 36% are stunted and 6% are wasted (too thin for their height, indicating acute malnutrition). Stunted, wasted, and underweight are key indicators of malnutrition in children aged 0-5 years. The research highlighted that while government programs and interventions are essential, the involvement and initiative of the community are critical to the success and sustainability of these efforts. One of the key findings of the study was that communities with active local participation in nutrition-related activities, such as kitchen gardening and the cultivation of traditional crops, had a higher intake of diverse and nutritious food. The research, which employed a mix of focus group discussions, in-depth interviews, and home observations, reveals how collective and individual contexts -- ranging from socio-cultural norms to economic challenges -- influence dietary practices across different communities like the brick-kiln workers, fishers, and salt pan workers among others. This was particularly evident in regions where women played a central role in these initiatives. The study also noted that these communities were more resilient to food insecurity and were better able to cope with economic and environmental challenges. For example, the study looked into the lives of salt pan workers in Jodhpur who prioritize their children's nutrition despite financial hardships. They ensure that their children never go hungry, even if it means offering biscuits or bread-milk. It suggested that while government initiatives provide the necessary framework and resources, real change happens when communities take ownership of these programmes and adapt them to their local contexts. To enhance the effectiveness of nutritional interventions for pregnant women and children under five, several key recommendations emerge from the study. First, there is a critical need to strengthen the role of ASHA and Anganwadi workers, who are often the primary source of health information in many communities. By providing these workers with advanced training that equips them to offer tailored advice based on the specific socio-cultural and economic contexts of the families they serve, the reach and impact of nutritional programs can be significantly increased. Subsidies for essential complementary foods are another vital measure to address the financial barriers that many families face. These subsidies would ensure that even in economically disadvantaged households, children receive the necessary nutrients during crucial developmental stages, the study recommended. Additionally, promoting a blend of legacy knowledge with modern nutritional insights can lead to more culturally acceptable and effective practices. Health education programs that respect and incorporate local beliefs while introducing scientifically backed practices are likely to be more successful in achieving sustainable behavioral change. Support for maternal health is also paramount. Implementing programs that provide additional food or rest for pregnant women, particularly during the last trimester, can have a positive impact on both maternal and child health outcomes. These programs should be designed with an understanding of local familial structures and dynamics, ensuring that they are accessible and acceptable within the community. Community-based nutritional programs should be developed to emphasize the importance of child nutrition and encourage collective action. Workshops and informational sessions led by trusted community members or healthcare professionals can play a crucial role in disseminating knowledge and encouraging healthy practices. Finally, improving access to fresh and nutritious food, particularly in remote or economically disadvantaged areas, is essential. This could involve initiatives such as creating community gardens, improving market access, or providing transportation subsidies to reach markets with a wider variety of foods.

With one more case of <keyword id="6545212" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nipah" source="Orion">Nipah</keyword> virus confirmed in Kerala's Kozhikode on Friday, the total tally is now at 6, including 2 deaths. All cases have been recorded in Kozhikode. In the circular, the Karnataka Health Department advised district authorities to "Set up check posts for fever surveillance at points of entry from Karnataka to Kerala. Intensify fever surveillance in bordering districts such as Chamarajanagar, Mysore, Kodagu, and Dakshin Kannada." Moreover, the Karnataka Health Department has advised people to avoid unnecessary travel from Karnataka to affected areas in Kerala. Amid concerns over the <keyword id="6544038" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nipah-virus-in-Kerala" source="Orion">Nipah virus in Kerala</keyword>, the Kerala government on Thursday took 15 body-fluid samples of those in the 'high-risk' contact list linked to the first Nipah victim for testing. The contact list contains 950 people, of whom 213 are in the high-risk category. 287 health workers are also on the contact list. Four people in high-risk categories are in a private hospital, and 17 people are under surveillance at Kozhikode Medical College. Meanwhile, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Dr Bharati Pravin Pawar, reviewed steps taken for containment of the Nipah virus outbreak in Kozhikode, Kerala, from the Indian Council of Medical Research - National Institute of Virology (ICMR-NIV), in Pune, on Thursday. Following the Nipah virus outbreak in Kozhikode district, the District Collector has declared holidays for all educational institutions, including Anganwadis, Madrasas, tuition centres, and professional colleges, on September 16, in addition to the two-day holiday already declared for September 14 and September 15. Amid growing concerns over a resurgence of the Nipah virus in Kerala, the state government strengthened measures to prevent the spread of infection a day after two deaths from it were confirmed in Kozhikode district.

The FY25 capex outlay is now at 3.4% of the GDP. Fiscal deficit, the gap between the government’s revenue and expenses, is expected to be 5.8% of gross domestic product, said the FM. “The gross market borrowing for the financial year ending March 2025 will be ₹14.3 lakh crore (less than the borrowing in the current financial year).” The FM began her speech by giving a summation of the Narendra Modi government's performance in the past ten years. "The Indian economy has witnessed positive transformation in the last 10 years. Our development steps have covered all elements of inclusivity," she said. This is the final budget of the second term of the Narendra Modi government before the country heads to elections later this summer. Sitharaman stressed on the government's aim to make India developed -- Viksit Bharat – by 2047. The government has tried to provide inclusive development and growth, both socially and geographically, she said in the opening minutes of her sixth budget speech as the country’s finance minister. It is to be noted that this Vote on Account or an Interim Budget is only for the next three months as the next government after the election will come out with a comprehensive budget for the financial year 2024-25 later. In other words, this budget outlines expenditures and revenues till the formation of the next government. Key announcements by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman: <ol><li>No relief for taxpayers: Same tax slabs to continue, says FM. “I propose to retain the same tax rates for direct and indirect taxes.”</li><li>FY25 divestment target at ₹50,000 crore. The FY24 target has been curbed to ₹30,000 crore</li><li>Gross market borrowing for FY ending March 2025 will be ₹14.3 lakh crore.</li><li>FY25 capex outlay increased by 11.1% to ₹11.11 lakh crore. The FY25 capex outlay is now at 3.4% of GDP.</li><li>The revised estimate of the fiscal deficit is 5.8% of GDP. The FY25 fiscal deficit target is set at 5.1%.</li><li>The FY25 revenue deficit is set at 2% versus FY24 revised estimate of 2.8%</li><li>The FDI during 2014 to 2023 was $596 billion. <ul><li>IRDAI chairperson Debasish Panda in a keynote address at FICCI’s Annual <keyword id="5724733" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="insurance-conference" source="Orion">Insurance Conference</keyword> – ‘FINCON 2023’ stated that the country could achieve <keyword id="10516382" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="insurance-for-all" source="Orion">insurance for all</keyword> before 2047. </li><li>IRDAI chief suggested the industry could work with government groups like ASHA workers, anganwadi workers, self-help groups and non-government organisations to spread awareness about insurance. </li><li>Since 2022, the insurance regulator has awarded licences to three insurance companies – CreditAccess Grameen Life Insurance, Acko Life Insurance and Kshema <keyword id="6366282" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="general-insurance" source="Orion">General Insurance</keyword>. </li><li>The regulator has granted a licence for life insurance business after 2011 and general insurance after 2017. </li></ul>The <keyword id="35486" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="insurance-industry" source="Orion">insurance industry</keyword> is targeting an ambitious vision to achieve ‘Insurance for all by 2047’ as the insurance regulator seeks to ease regulations to bring in more players and boost penetration of insurance products in the country. The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) chairperson Debasish Panda, in a keynote address at FICCI’s Annual Insurance Conference ‘FINCON 2023’, stated that the country could achieve insurance for all before 2047. “The risks that we face in our daily lives are numerous and highly unpredictable. And yet, despite this reality, insurance coverage remains a privilege only being accessed by few and not the majority,” said Panda at the conference. Since 2022, the insurance regulator has awarded licences to three insurance companies – CreditAccess Grameen Life Insurance, Acko Life Insurance and Kshema General Insurance. The regulator has granted a licence for life insurance business after 2011 and for general insurance after 2017, he said. To boost insurance penetration the regulator is also changing the registration guidelines and bringing in more clarity, he said. Besides, 20 odd companies are in the process of getting their insurance licences, he added. India’s insurance penetration was pegged at 4.2% in FY21, with life insurance penetration at 3.2% and non-life insurance penetration at 1.0%, which is pretty low compared to other nations. This also offers huge opportunities for insurance players to tap into a market that offers high potential. Panda also encouraged companies to utilise the increase in foreign direct investment (FDI) limit in the insurance sector to 74%, from 49% earlier, to bring in more capital and grow faster than in the past. “I expect the industry must innovate and create products that are affordable and accessible and also available to a wide range of consumers,” said Panda. He underlined the need to cater to 1.4 billion people, their businesses, properties, health, assets. And for this he said “we need more players, more capital, more distribution channels, more products, innovation and healthy competition.” Panda added that the industry could connect with the last mile to spread awareness by working with government groups like ASHA workers, anganwadi workers, self-help groups and non-government organisations, who could be messengers to make people aware of insurance.
