It recalled <keyword id="3049" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Clinton">Clinton</keyword>'s remarks several years ago at a fundraiser hosted by <keyword id="457619" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rajwant-Singh">Rajwant Singh</keyword>, a prominent Indian-American from <keyword id="105921" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maryland">Maryland</keyword>, where she said, "I can certainly run for the <keyword id="6355284" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="senate">Senate</keyword> seat in <keyword id="6354953" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Punjab">Punjab</keyword> and win easily ," after being introduced by <keyword id="6361419" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Singh">Singh</keyword> as the "Senator not only from <keyword id="6355838" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="New-York">New York</keyword> but also Punjab."<br />
<br /> What the website skipped is the fact that even <keyword id="155317" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Republican">Republican</keyword> lawmakers were quite interested to woo Sikh voters at that time.<br />

<br /> "HCL and Tata are responsible for the layoffs of workers from Disney , Southern California Edison, <keyword id="1432975" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Northeast-Utilities">Northeast Utilities</keyword>, <keyword id="6490330" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Xerox">Xerox</keyword>, University of California, Siemens, and countless others," it added.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>President-elect <keyword id="99719" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Joe-Biden">Joe Biden</keyword> told a group of civil rights leaders that Republicans "beat the hell" out of Democrats in 2020 by attacking them over the "defund the police" slogan employed by some activists.</li><li>Biden made the remarks in a Tuesday Zoom call with several civil rights heavyweights.</li><li>Audio from the call was leaked to The Intercept.</li><li>Biden urged the group to avoid pushing for drastic police reform measures ahead of the two US Senate runoff elections in Georgia.</li><li>"I also don't think we should get too far ahead ourselves on dealing with police reform in that, because they've already labeled us as being 'defund the police' anything we put forward in terms of the organizational structure to change policing," Biden said. </li></ul><p>President-elect Joe Biden warned a group of prominent civil rights leaders that Republicans "beat the hell" out of downballot Democrats in the <keyword id="7600569" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="2020-election">2020 election</keyword> by portraying them as supportive of "defunding" the police in a Tuesday meeting with civil rights leaders, <a href="https://theintercept.com/2020/12/10/biden-audio-meeting-civil-rights-leaders/">according to audio of the meeting obtained by the Intercept. </a></p><p>The call included Vice-president elect Sen. Kamala Harris, prominent civil rights advocates including NAACP President Derrick Johnson, National Action Network founder Rev. Al Sharpton, NAACP Education &amp; Legal Defense Fund leader Sherrilyn Ifill, former Department of Justice Civil Rights Division leader Vanita Gupta, and Rep. Cedric Richmond of Louisiana, who is set to join the Biden administration. </p><p>"I also don't think we should get too far ahead ourselves on dealing with police reform in that, because they've already labeled us as being 'defund the police' anything we put forward in terms of the organizational structure to change policing - which I promise you, will occur. Promise you," Biden said during the call.</p><p>Police and criminal justice reform became a Nationwide issue earlier this year after the police killings of George Floyd, Breona Taylor, and other Black Americans. Some activists have used the phrasing "defund the police" to describe how they wanted justice and policing reformed in their communities.</p><p>"That's how they beat the living hell out of us across the country, saying that we're talking about defunding the police. We're not. We're talking about holding them accountable," Biden said. "We're talking about giving them money to do the right things. We're talking about putting more psychologists and psychiatrists on the telephones when the 911 calls through. We're talking about spending money to enable them to do their jobs better, not with more force, with less force and more understanding."</p><p>Just beore making his remaks about police, Biden responded to a concern<a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2020/12/09/black-farmers-tom-vilsack-agriculture-usda-biden-cabinet-444077"> from Johnson about nominating Tom Vilsack to serve as Agriculture Secretary</a>, a position Vilsack held for the entire duration of former President Barack Obama's administration from 2009 to 2017. </p><p>In 2010, Vilsack was criticized for<a href="https://www.huffpost.com/entry/joe-biden-tom-vilsack-agriculture-secretary_n_5fd03658c5b61d81b33a0d17"> firing Shirley Sherrod</a>, then the Director of Rural Development for the agency, over remarks she made that were deceptively edited by Breitbart News founder Andrew Breitbart. After an uproar over her ouster, Vilsack offered Sherrod a job back at the department, which she declined. </p><p>On January 5, there are two US Senate runoffs taking place in Georgia, which will determine which party controls the US Senate. If Democrats win both seats, control of the Senate will be evenly divided between 50 Democratic caucus members and 50 Republicans with Harris as the tie-breaking vote. </p><p>"If you consider the victory that you appreciated in Georgia, it was around 12,000 votes," Johnson said. "And so as you consider appointments, you also must consider what impact would that have on voters in the state of Georgia. And I will submit to you that former Secretary Vilsack could have a disastrous impact on voters in Georgia. Shirley Sherrod is a civil rights legend, a hero."</p><p>Biden told Johnson he'd "learn more about Vilsack's record" before he pivoted to warning the leaders not to go all-in on police reform or promote the "defund the police" slogan ahead of the Georgia runoffs.</p><p>While Biden won the presidency with 306 Electoral College votes, Democrats down the ballot didn't fare as well. Pending the outcome of the Georgia runoffs. Democrats only won back one US Senate seat and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/2020-house-elections-results">lost nine US House seats</a>, according to Decision Desk HQ and Insider.</p><p>"President-elect Biden is the same person behind closed doors that he is public; honest, direct and realistic about the challenges facing our nation the day he is sworn in," <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2020-election/leaked-recording-biden-says-gop-used-defund-police-beat-living-n1250757">a Biden transition official told NBC News about the recording</a>. "As he made clear throughout the campaign, he believes in supporting bold and urgent reform to our criminal justice system while continuing to support law enforcement's mission to keep our communities safe."</p>

Breitbart died in 2012 from heart failure, but one of his former Huffington Post cofounders, Jonah Peretti, remembers what he was like to work with.</p><p>Peretti spoke to Business Insider about his former colleague during an interview for our podcast, "<a href="https://www.acast.com/howididit/buzzfeedandhuffingtonpostfounderjonahperetti-howiturnedaninstantmessengerbotintoa-1.5billionmediaempire?autoplay">Success! How I Did It</a>."</p><p>And according to Peretti, he loved being "a real internet troll."</p><p>"He knew how to find the line that would cause all the different cultural cracks to explode and have people bang into each other," Peretti said. He's of course the founder of Breitbart, which seems to be one of the Trump administration's favorite publications. What do you think he would make of what's become of his publication, and what was he like?"</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Jonah Peretti:</strong> "He was just bouncing off the walls at a million miles an hour, tons of ideas, lived on the internet kind of guy. It was challenging to work with him but also a lot of fun. He was at some level a real internet troll. He told me a story about how he was writing a headline on the Drudge Report about Chris Rock, and how he loves Chris Rock and thinks he's hilarious, but the headline was like "Shock and Outrage: How could he host the Oscars when he makes all these inappropriate jokes?"</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"He knew that he could write it exactly in a way that would cause socially-liberal conservatives to think it was funny and actual more family-values conservatives to be outraged. He knew how to find the line that would cause all the different cultural cracks to explode and have people bang into each other. He loved it. He loved that kind of thing."</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"I think the continued trolling of massive parts of the population by Breitbart and the Trump administration would be something that Andrew would love. I think he would have a more complex and nuanced view on Trump himself, and on policies and things like that. The founder of Breitbart, one of Trump's favorite sites, also cofounded the Huffington Post - here's what he was like to work with

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>While mainstream news outlets search inwardly for answers after the shocking victory of President-elect Donald Trump, Breitbart News appears to be riding his wave to the presidency.<p>The far-right website, which bolstered Trump's candidacy in its infancy with positive coverage, has been run since 2012 by Steve Bannon, who was named Trump's chief&#xa0;strategist on Sunday. Bannon's appointment set off a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/who-is-steve-bannon-2016-11">firestorm of criticism</a>, as politicians of all political stripes argued that he harbored sympathies for white nationalist arguments and rhetoric.</p><p>In recent days, the website has flexed its emboldened political clout, boasting of <a href="http://www.breitbart.com/big-journalism/2016/11/07/breitbart-news-hits-record-240-million-pageviews-37-million-uniques-in-october/">record-shattering traffic</a> and announcing it will expand its US operations and <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-election-trump-strategy-idUSKBN1342TP">launch new sites</a> in Germany and France. It has also v<a href="http://thehill.com/homenews/media/306106-breitbart-news-planning-lawsuit-against-major-media-company">owed it will sue</a> a "major media company" over claims that Breitbart is a "white nationalist website," and is reportedly trying to <a href="http://pagesix.com/2016/11/12/billy-bush-courted-by-breitbart-for-comeback-gig/">recruit Billy Bush</a>, the disgraced ex-host of NBC's "Today" who exchanged crude sexual remarks with Trump in a 2005 incident captured by a hot mic.</p><p>All the while, Breitbart's coverage has continued to flaunt its provocative spin on the news, to the outrage of mainstream reporters and fact-checkers. A recent article, for instance, went viral for declaring Trump won a "7.5 million popular vote landslide" in the country's heartland - a misleading assertion which, as the <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-fix/wp/2016/11/15/thanks-to-a-bad-map-and-bizarre-math-breitbart-can-report-that-trump-won-the-real-popular-vote/?postshare=9711479252952980&amp;tid=ss_tw">Washington Post noted</a>, can only be made true by arbitrarily defining "heartland" and discounting 52 counties Clinton won.</p><p><div></div></p><p>Now, Breitbart's status as a brazenly pro-Trump news outlet is prompting questions around what role the website will play in media coverage of the Trump administration, and how close its ties will remain to Bannon and the president-elect himself.</p><p>As former Breitbart spokesman Kurt Bardella told Business Insider recently, it's unclear where Breitbart ends and Trump's government begins - perhaps there is no division.</p><p>"I don't look at them as a news source, I look at them as a de-facto wing of the Trump administration," Bardella said.&#xa0;"As long as he is in office, they are his mouthpiece.</p><p>"Just consider Breitbart the official vehicle of the Trump White House."</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><h3>The evolution of Breitbart</h3><p>Breitbart was founded in 2008 by Andrew Breitbart, the late conservative firebrand known for his commentary excoriating liberal media bias and political corruption.</p><p>Under his leadership, the website generated news coverage that was hailed by the right-wing for its populist, anti-establishment slant, and reviled by the left for purportedly inflaming partisan tensions and using handpicked details devoid of context to mislead readers.</p><p>Breitbart is also notorious for offering provocative, even deliberately outrageous commentary that is separate from its news coverage, and written by far-right bloggers such as <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/twitter-permanently-bans-milo-yiannopoulos-2016-7">Milo Yiannopoulous</a>, who frequently denounces feminism and was famously banned from Twitter in July after allegedly inciting his followers to send a wave of harassment and abuse to "Saturday Night Live" star Leslie Jones.</p><p>But the website first began gaining prominence years earlier, after its staunch defense of the <a href="http://www.teapartyexpress.org/3622/rest-in-peace-andrew-breitbart">Tea Party movement</a> and its role in the downfall of then-New York congressman <a href="http://www.breitbart.com/big-journalism/2013/04/15/lies-upon-lies-how-anthony-weiner-went-down/">Anthony Weiner</a> (Breitbart was the first to break the news of lewd photos and texts Weiner had sent to women online).</p><p>After Andrew Breitbart's death in 2012, however, the website took on a more nationalist tone under the direction of Bannon, who became executive chairman.</p><p>Breitbart was propelled into mainstream attention during the 2016 presidential campaign, when its reporters began providing strikingly positive coverage to Trump during the Republican primaries.</p><p>It was a shift that disgusted establishment Republicans, and even some staffers within Breitbart. The turmoil came to a head in March, after reporter Michelle Fields accused Trump's then-campaign manager <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/corey-lewandowski-charged-simple-battery-2016-3">Corey Lewandowski</a> of assaulting her at a Florida event.</p><p>Breitbart's perceived defense of the Trump campaign in the matter eventually prompted the resignations of Fields, editor-at-large Ben Shapiro, and Bardella - all of whom are now vocal critics of the website and of Bannon.</p><h3><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></h3><h3>The embracement of the "alt-right"</h3><p>Bannon described Breitbart News as "<a href="http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2016/08/stephen-bannon-donald-trump-alt-right-breitbart-news">a platform to the alt-right</a>" to journalist Sarah Posner at the Republican National Convention in July.&#xa0;</p><p>The "alt-right" refers to a growing movement that has shunned establishment conservatism and openly embraced white nationalism and promoted racist and sexist rhetoric. It largely rejects the label of bigotry, however, arguing that it instead seeks to fight "political correctness."</p><p>According to Breitbart's own "<a href="http://www.breitbart.com/tech/2016/03/29/an-establishment-conservatives-guide-to-the-alt-right/">guide to the alt-right</a>," written by&#xa0;Yiannopoulous&#xa0;and Allum Bokhari, the movement aims to reemphasize the value of Western European culture and it explains the many racist and bigoted memes created by members as a means of shattering cultural taboos. Bannon, on Wednesday after <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/steve-bannon-kellyanne-conway-donald-trump-campaign-managers-2016-8">news broke</a> that Donald Trump had appointed him as campaign CEO.</p><p>"Bannon is a legitimately sinister figure," Shapiro, who left Breitbart earlier this year in a fiery exit, <a href="http://www.dailywire.com/news/8441/i-know-trumps-new-campaign-chairman-steve-bannon-ben-shapiro" target="_blank">wrote on his website</a>.</p><p>The conservative pundit added: "He is a vindictive, nasty figure, infamous for verbally abusing supposed friends and threatening enemies. Bannon is a smarter version of Trump: he's an aggressive self-promoter who name-drops to heighten his profile and woo bigger names, and then uses those bigger names as stepping stools to his next destination."</p><p>Trump "may be [Bannon's] final destination" or "it may not," wrote Shapiro.</p><p>"He will attempt to ruin anyone who impedes his unending ambition, and he will use anyone bigger than he is - for example, Donald Trump - to get where he wants to go. Bannon knows that in the game of thrones, you win or die. And he certainly doesn't intend to die. He'll kill everyone else before he goes," Shapiro wrote.</p><p>As chairman of Breitbart, Bannon has overseen the website's political coverage, which has been very pro-Trump. At times, Breitbart has pedaled conspiracy theories against Trump's political opponents.</p><p>Shapiro was a friend of the late Andrew Breitbart. He left Breitbart earlier this year over disagreement about how the outlet addressed an incident with one of its former reporters, Michelle Fields, who was grabbed and pulled by ex-campaign manager Corey Lewandowski at an event. The website failed to stand by her and Shapiro vocally condemned it for not doing so.</p><p>Trump announced Bannon would <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/steve-bannon-kellyanne-conway-donald-trump-campaign-managers-2016-8">join the campaign</a> in a early Wednesday morning press release. Former Breitbart editor Ben Shapiro unleashes on Stephen Bannon: 'Legitimately sinister figure'

How BuzzFeed CEO Jonah Peretti took an instant messaging bot and turned it into a $1.5 billion media empire

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>"BLACK LIVES KILL."</strong></span></p><p>Those were the three words that blared across the Drudge Report early Friday morning after five Dallas police officers were killed in a horrific ambush attack.</p><p>And immediately upon seeing the race-baiting headline, conservatives rebelled against a once-reliable ally who has become more and more divisive to them over the course of the 2016 campaign.</p><p>"In moments like these, we should do the opposite of what Drudge is doing," Commentary Magazine Editor Noah Rothman <a href="https://twitter.com/NoahCRothman/status/751440600856166401" target="_blank">wrote on Twitter</a>.</p><p>"Responsible reporting as always," <a href="https://twitter.com/EsotericCD/status/751440819685588992" target="_blank">sarcastically tweeted</a> Jeff Blehar, from the popular Ace of Spades blog.</p><p>Others piled on.</p><p>Allahpundit, an influential anonymous conservative blogger,&#xa0;skewered the site for a subsequent banner headline claiming a "black power group" had claimed responsibility for the attack.</p><p>"Dallas chief says suspect told them before he died that he wasn't part of a group," the <a href="https://twitter.com/allahpundit/status/751442465349967874" target="_blank">blogger wrote</a>.</p><p>And David French, the National Review writer <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/david-french-not-running-for-president-2016-6" target="_blank">who flirted with a third-party presidential run</a>, went as far as to say that he had deleted the Drudge Report app from his phone.</p><p><div></div></p><p>The anti-Drudge sentiment had been simmering for months. But it seemed to finally come to a boil with the Drudge Report's coverage of the Dallas attack.</p><p>Since its inception in 1996, the Drudge Report has been a home to conservatives who feel disenfranchised by traditional media. Drudge has marketed his website as a news destination not controlled by corporate interests or politicians.</p><p>But that's a narrative that was heavily challenged during the 2016 Republican Primary, when it became clear&#xa0;the news aggregator was pushing&#xa0;a pro-Trump agenda.</p><p>Many conservatives who frequent the right-wing link aggregator had grown upset over how founder Matt Drudge had covered the 2016 election. The Drudge Report, they say, trashed true-bred conservatives like Ted Cruz in favor of promoting a squishy moderate in Donald Trump.</p><p>"I don't know what the hell happened to Matt Drudge," Glenn Beck, the prominent conservative talk-show host and founder of The Blaze, said in March.</p><p>The Drudge Report, operating from the same playbook as Trump, has used the racial tension in the country to generate page views, its&#xa0;critics say. And the website's controversial three-word headline in the aftermath of the Dallas attack was the final straw.</p><p>"Matt Drudge, for whom my late friend Andrew Breitbart used to work closely and for whom I used to fill in on his old national radio show, is not a conservative," conservative talk-radio host John Ziegler told Business Insider. "He is a brilliant businessman who doesn't care at all about the conservative cause."</p><p><div></div></p><p>The operator of the anti-Trump Stop Trump PAC, a Republican operative who asked not to be named to preserve his anonymity, told Business Insider he agreed with Ziegler's analysis.</p><p>"It has nothing to do with conservatism. It has to do with ratings," he said.</p><p>He added: "When it comes to Drudge, he has chosen to go down a path of racism. Embracing racism, inciting hate - all to gain followers. He doesn't care about conservative principles or ideas. It's all about ratings. It's a ratings game."</p><p>And Steve Deace, a popular Iowa radio host, slammed the Drudge Report as a "fraud."</p><p>"Drudge isn't a conservative. He's a sensationalist. And right now, the sensation is white grievance politics/populism, so he's parked there," Deace&#xa0;told Business Insider. "Drudge, like too many other people in our industry, is a master at capitalizing on being conservative media without actually demonstrating a shred of conservatism."</p><p>Yet, despite a growing group of critics, Drudge still has fierce backers.</p><p>When asked to respond to the onslaught of attacks on his friend, Ann Coulter, the best-selling conservative author, replied in a Trump-esqe manner: "SAD!"</p><p>Matthew Boyle, Washington editor for Breitbart News, a website often linked to by Drudge, told Business Insider that the criticism stemmed from a "handful of losers."</p><p>"Clearly, a handful of losers like David French have a problem with truth and accuracy," he said. "The reason they don't like Drudge is because Drudge gets it right."</p><p>Boyle added: "He got it right in the Republican primaries, and he has it right in Dallas. Maybe David French's time would be better spent floating an irrelevant potential presidential campaign again, while Drudge tells America what's really going on."</p><p>Others told Business Insider that the latest controversy surrounding Drudge was nothing unexpected.</p><p>"I think Drudge is just being Drudge," radio host Erick Erickson said. "I think Drudge sensationalizes things, but he also knows what his readers want. I'm not one to call for a boycott of anyone, but I personally find I go to the site less and less this political season."</p><p>Overall, the divide over the Drudge Report appears to reflect the current rift in the Republican Party caused by the bombastic Trump.&#xa0;</p><p>The website's loudest supporters are largely backers of Trump, and the Manhattan billionaire has repeatedly lavished praise on it throughout the 2016 cycle. On the other side of the spectrum, members of the "Never Trump" movement have been the most critical, accusing Drudge of being a sellout.</p><p>Drudge, for his part, has appeared to bask in the limelight, seemingly enjoying the attention from both fans and critics.&#xa0;He did not respond to an emailed request for comment, but took to Twitter earlier this month to pen a short note to the "lovers and haters."</p><p>The Internet-news mogul wrote: "Thank you for your continued readership! The lovers and the haters. Such extraordinary times. After Dallas, conservatives rebel against the Drudge Report

<p><div class="image-container float_right" style="width:400px"><div class="image"></div><p class="source">AP</p></div>The Internet exploded Friday with <a href="http://www.slate.com/blogs/weigel/2013/04/12/kermit_gosnell_the_alleged_mass_murderer_and_the_bored_media.html" target="_blank">columns</a> <a href="http://www.nationalreview.com/campaign-spot/345399/horror-media-cant-bring-itself-cover" target="_blank">criticizing</a> the mainstream press for <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-04-12/why-is-the-press-ignoring-the-kermit-gosnell-story-.html" target="_blank">failing</a> to cover the <a href="http://www.theatlantic.com/national/archive/2013/04/why-dr-kermit-gosnells-trial-should-be-a-front-page-story/274944/" target="_blank">story</a> of <keyword id="1674033" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Kermit-Gosnell">Kermit Gosnell</keyword>, the Philadelphia <keyword id="6357791" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="abortion">abortion</keyword> doctor currently on trial for the horrific atrocities that took place at his clinic for more than two decades.</p>
<p>The stories were driven by a flood of tweets from <keyword id="141830" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Conservatives">conservatives</keyword> Thursday night, which helped garner real momentum for the trial for the first time and bring it to full mainstream attention.</p>
<p>The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/kermit-gosnell-busted-by-dea-2013-4" target="_blank">story of Gosnell is horrific</a>: He allegedly murdered live babies in an unsanitary, late-term abortion clinic for nearly three decades before being arrested in 2011. He is charged with eight counts of murder, including seven babies and one woman, <span>Karnamaya Mongar, who died after a botched abortion.</span></p>
<p>Despite that, there was very little mainstream attention paid to the trial. </p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">It </span><a href="http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Journalism/2013/04/12/Media-Coverage-of-Gosnell-Trial-Five-Networks-One-Mention" target="_blank">gained little coverage on cable news</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">, and no national papers picked it up as a front-page story — even at the Philadelphia Inquirer, </span><a href="http://www.newseum.org/todaysfrontpages/hr.asp?fpVname=PA_PI&amp;ref_pge=gal&amp;b_pge=11" target="_blank">it only made for below-the-fold news</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">.</span></p>
<p>The Twitter frenzy began Thursday when Mollie Hemingway, a writer at Patheos.com, asked Washington Post health policy reporter Sarah Kliff why she hadn't been covering the Gosnell trial. She was one of many conservatives up in arms about a <a href="http://www.usatoday.com/story/opinion/2013/04/10/philadelphia-abortion-clinic-horror-column/2072577/" target="_blank">column from Fox News contributor Kirsten Powers</a>, who criticized the mainstream press for paying little attention to the trial.</p>

<p><span>That didn't sit well with other conservatives like Bethany Mandel, a writer for Commentary Magazine, who called Kliff's response "shocking" on Friday. </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Hemingway's spark ignited Mandel other conservatives to start joining in. </span></p>

<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">By the end of Thursday, "#Gosnell" was the No. 1 trending topic on Twitter. BuzzFeed's Jessica Testa </span><a href="http://twitpic.com/ciuyni" target="_blank">tweeted</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> out this chart showing how drastically mentions of "Gosnell" had increased over the past day:</span></p>

<p><span>"It's been amazing to watch," Mandel said. "You really see the power of Twitter."</span></p>
<p>The momentum has <a href="https://twitter.com/search?q=%23Gosnell&amp;src=tren" target="_blank">carried through to Friday</a>.</p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Mandel said that she hadn't heard of the story until Tuesday, but she doesn't think that's completely a result of liberal reporter biases, as some have suggested.</span></p>
<p>"We're kind of conditioned to tune out the abortion conversation, because it never goes anywhere," Mandel said. "This is not that conversation. This is not a story about abortion. This is a story about mass murder."</p>
<p>Still, Mandel can scarcely remember the last time such a spontaneous outcry earned the legitimate attention of reporters so rapidly. Hemingway didn't stop tweeting about Gosnell until nearly 2 a.m. Friday morning. And by the morning, the mainstream press began to take notice. </p>
<p>The closest comparison Mandel could think of was the 2011 takedown of then-New York Congressman Anthony Weiner, which was precipitated by a relentless push from conservative media titan Andrew Breitbart. </p>
<p>"Andrew singlehandedly brought down Anthony Weiner," Mandel said. "His constant beating-the-drum, saying 'you need to talk about this,' eventually brought down a sitting Congressman. I would say, off the top of my head, that's what this movement reminds me of."</p>
