TIME called Reliance 'India's Juggernaut'. This is the second time that Reliance has found its way into the TIME list. Jio Platforms, the firm that holds digital properties of the conglomerate, was included in the inaugural TIME 100 Most Influential Companies List of 2021. Serum Institute is the other Indian company on the list. TIME listed Reliance in the 'Titans' category (one of the five categories under which the companies were divided, other being Leaders, Disrupters, Innovators, and Pioneers). Tata was listed in 'Titan's' category while Serum under 'Pioneers'. "Reliance Industries was founded as a textile and polyester company 58 years ago by Dhirubhai Ambani. Today the sprawling conglomerate -- which has aligned its growth with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for a 'self-reliant' India -- is the country's most valuable company, with a market capitalisation of more than USD 200 billion," TIME said. Now led by Dhirubhai's son Mukesh, the Mumbai-based company has ventures in energy, retail, and telecommunications, among others, and has made its chairman Asia's richest man, it said. The publication went on to stated that in February, Reliance came out on top in a fiercely competitive race to dominate India's burgeoning streaming market by striking a USD 8.5 billion merger deal with Disney's India business. "The deal will bring together more than 100 television channels and give the combined group around a 31 per cent share of India's streaming market compared to rivals Netflix and Amazon Prime with 8 per cent each," according to analytics firm Comscore. Reliance has revolutionised several economic sectors in the world's most populous country by making world-class products and services available at affordable prices with multiple innovations. Under Mukesh Ambani, the firm's telecom arm Jio revolutionised India's digital landscape and drove digital inclusion on an unprecedented scale with the most affordable mobile data tariffs in the world. It set up the world's largest single location refining complex. Reliance Retail is ranked among the top 100 retailers globally and in FY24 it registered 1.06 billion footfalls across its 18,800+ stores (67 per cent of which are in small towns and villages). Reliance is investing USD 10 billion in building the most comprehensive ecosystem for new energy and new materials in India and has set an ambitious goal to reach net-zero carbon by 2035. TIME described Serum as the world's biggest vaccine maker, churning out billions of vaccines. The company makes 3.5 billion doses every year, including for measles, polio, and most recently, HPV. "Serum's CEO Adar Poonawalla says the company's success can largely be chalked up to its private ownership. Not being beholden to shareholders allows it to keep vaccine prices low (the R21 will cost USD 4 a shot)," the publication said. Tata Group, it said, was founded in 1868 and has a vast portfolio extending from steel, software, watches, subsea cables, and chemicals, to salt, grains, air-conditioners, fashion, and hotels. "But as rivals have aggressively courted new businesses, it struggled to keep up with stiff competition. In 2017, after over a century of family management, N Chandrasekaran took over as chairman despite having no personal ties to the family -- highly unusual when India's business landscape is ruled by family succession plans," TIME said. As chair, he has transformed the group by investing in tech manufacturing, AI, and semiconductor chips. In 2023, it became the first Indian company to assemble iPhones, and is building another plant, it said, adding that in September, Tata announced a partnership with Nvidia to develop an AI cloud in India. "And this year, it announced plans for the country's first major semiconductor manufacturing facility. The moves seem to be paying off: in February, Tata's combined market capitalisation reached a whopping USD 365 billion, more than the entire economy of India's neighbour and rival, Pakistan," it added. Reliance, Tata on TIME's list of world's most influential companies

The study highlighted that the AI industry and machine intelligence have seen an upward trend, and a growth of about 30% over the last one year. However, the opportunities do not include new jobs in the sector, and are focussed on existing positions that have been vacant for over 12 months, according to the report. In the artificial Intelligence domain, the employers mainly demand key skills such as <keyword id="294572" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="20" keywordseo="machine-learning">machine learning</keyword> natural language processing, neural networks, analytics, cloud computing and pattern recognition. With such pace of growth and increasing demand for automation, the net compensation in this job sector has been fairly good at 1.43 million across levels with nearly 40% having an entry-level salary starting at 600,000. While Bengaluru dominates the AI market in India at 32% of all AI working professionals, Delhi-NCR has 22%. However, Mumbai has the highest share of these professionals and is also the highest paymaster to AI professionals. AI has been used by financial services companies, for example, for credit approvals and for predicting default rates, making processes faster and more accurate. Sundar Pichai gets a spot in Time's 2020 'influential' list and generous praise from Jamie Dimon

New Delhi, Dec 18 () Real estate developers can significantly reduce their construction and marketing costs by using data analytics and undertaking proper market study before launching projects, industry experts said on Wednesday.
 Addressing a CII-CBRE conference on 'Changing dynamics of construction industry', ATS group CMD Getamber Anand stressed that real estate developers need to change their mindset and working approach to execute their residential and commercial projects.
 "There is a tremendous scope of cost saving in marketing activities by doing market study through the use of data analytics," he said.
 Citing the example of his own company, Anand said ATS has been able to reduce marketing expenses to less than 1 per cent from earlier 4-5 per cent of the overall project cost.
 The cost of acquiring customers used to be 7-8 per cent, including an average brokerage of 3 per cent, he said.
 Similarly, Anand said there is a lot of wastage of construction materials like steel and cement which could be easily curbed.
 "Builders have been mismanaging cash flow and sales...We need to change, else we will not be able to ride the next wave of success," he said.
 Speaking at the event, CBRE Chairman and CEO (India, South East Asia, Middle East and Africa) Anshuman Magazine said: "Developers should do market study and analysis before launching their projects to understand the need of the buyer and price point at which flats can be absorbed."
 He said consulting firms like CBRE have always been advising this to developers, but unfortunately it was never implemented.
 Magazine, however, said the current slow market condition is now forcing developers to change their strategy and focus on cost saving in marketing and construction.
 The competition from big corporate houses which have entered into this segment is also leading to this transformation, he said.

The survey, which was conducted in association with AnalytixLabs, determines the challenges that applicants face during the Data Science and Analytics hiring process. It covers various aspects from job seekers perspectives such as availability of jobs in the current crisis, challenges faced during data science recruitment process, the necessity of degree or formal education for a data science job, the significance of programming experience, the significance of prior work experience, and more. In terms of challenges encountered during data science recruitment, 39% of respondents believe that it is a lengthy hiring process. Lack of regular communication from recruiters is listed as the second most challenging as about 28% of the respondents face this challenge. 35% of respondents believe that for Analytics and Data Science hiring, it is required to have a degree or formal education. Whereas 17% of the respondents believe that on-the-job learning with no formal learning is sufficient for a career in Data Science. In terms of formal programming experience, 40% of the respondents feel that on the job learning balances formal programming experience, whereas 29% of the respondents feel that formal programming is very significant and on-the-job learning on its own is insufficient. According to the report, 35% of the respondents believe that prior experience of 5+ years is very significant for Analytics and Data Science hiring or jobs. 33% of the applicants feel that prior experience is significant but not crucial as similar experience in IT or Statistics is sufficient for a job or career in data science. In terms of transitioning to Data Science from a non-science background, 48% of the job seekers feel that it is difficult to make a transition, whereas 13% of the respondents believe that the transition is easy with online training and free learning supporting the transition. However, 11% of the respondents feel that it is not possible for Non-science professionals to transition to a career in Data Science. The report also suggests that the job seekers identify internship as the best approach to get on-board with organisations, with 69% of respondents believing that. According to the report, of all the resources and tools for up-skilling and preparing for recruitment, online self-paced learning has emerged as the most preferred method as 66% of the respondents have favoured this method for preparation and building capabilities. On the other hand, in terms of sectors covered, the IT sector has emerged as the one providing the most opportunities. 41% of Data Science job seekers have identified this sector with the most opportunities. For specific sites or resources utilized to find a job in analytics or data science, LinkedIn has once again emerged at the top of the bracket across the Data Science job-seeking community. This year, 82% of the respondents have mentioned that they utilize the professional networking site to find a job. The leading job site Naukri.com is preferred by 21% of the job-seeking community. In terms of cities, Bengaluru has once again emerged as the leading city among job seekers, with 87% of the job-seeking audience voting Bengaluru as the destination for most opportunities. This is followed by Mumbai and Delhi. The demographics of the survey included fresh graduates seeking opportunities and also personnel seeking new ventures across the analytics space. Moreover, the respondents covered personnel largely from the tech hub of Bengaluru, followed by the Finance hub of Mumbai. The hottest AI jobs will need you to know these programming languages and tools

New Delhi, Jan 13 () Gross leasing of office space increased by 25 per cent to an all-time high of 61.6 million sq ft across nine major cities during last year on better supply and demand conditions, according to property consultant CBRE. 
Earlier, Knight Frank India reported 27 per cent jump in office space leasing in 2019 at record 60.6 million square feet gross across eight cities, while JLL India had said that net office space leasing rose by 40 per cent last year across seven major cities to an all-time high of 46.5 million sq ft.
 "The office sector remained buoyant in 2019, driven by demand from global multinationals, domestic firms and a healthy supply infusion in cities such as Hyderabad and Bangalore. By the end of 2019, gross leasing activity crossed 60 million to touch a historic high of 61.6 million sq ft, growing by more than 25 per cent year-on-year," CBRE said in a report released Monday.
Bengaluru, followed by Hyderabad, National Capital Region (NCR) and Mumbai dominated office leasing on an annual basis, together accounting for almost 75 per cent of the overall leasing of office space. Absorption of space increased across all cities except Kochi, it added.

 In the coming years, the real estate sector is expected to offer vast development and investment opportunities as the Indian economy transitions and its workforce expands, he added.
According to the data, the share of the technology sector in overall space take-up rose from about a third in 2018 to almost 40 per cent, with overall leasing by such firms rising by more than 45 per cent on an annual basis. 
The share of research, consulting and analytics firms has increased to 5 per cent in 2019 from 4 per cent in 2018. The collective share of sectors such as engineering and manufacturing, BFSI, e-commerce and research, consulting &amp; analytics, dropped from 36 per cent in 2018 to 31 per cent in 2019. 
Meanwhile, corporates continued to opt for flexible spaces, with the share of the segment rising from 12 per cent in 2018 to about 14 per cent last year.
In 2019, supply addition rose by about 50 per cent year-on-year to touch 52.4 million sq ft. 
"The growth in supply additions in 2019 was a result of buildings receiving much-awaited occupation certificates across cities, as well as pre-commitments made in the prior years which came to fruition through 2019. The supply is likely to normalise in 2020, resulting in absorption growth in the coming year to plateau and be in line with the supply," said Ram Chandnani, MD (Advisory &amp; Transaction Services), India, CBRE South Asia.  The finding comes in the backdrop of an ongoing job crisis in the country in an election year during slowdown in job growth across all sectors. Nonetheless, two leading IT firms in India — Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Infosys — <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/These-2-Indian-IT-majors-hired-more-than-42000-techies-in-fiscal-year-2019/articleshow/69000671.cms">reportedly</a> increased their hiring by 350% in FY19. The IT sector faced some troubled waters back in 2017, when tech firms all over India laid off around 56,000 workers allegedly due to digitisation and automation. A recent <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/education/five-million-jobs-lost-between-2016-18-says-report/story-9OsA2pHxyvto4qoiDUSLMI.html">analysis</a> by a research team at Azim Premji University painted a grim picture, saying over 5 million jobs were lost in India between the years of 2016 and 2018. The IT sector, nonetheless, seems to have turned a corner in the last two quarters. And, the Experis IT Employment Outlook Survey <a href="https://www.experisindia.com/outlook_survey.php">predicted</a> as much, expecting a positive net employment outlook of 53% between October 2018 and March 2019. But, the survey also pointed out how most of the employment will be generated by non-IT companies looking to transform digitally. As much as 45% of the demand for IT professionals would come from companies involved in utilities, finance, manufacturing and retail. The rapid evolution of machines and algorithms in the workplace could create 133 million new roles in place of 75 million that will be displaced between now and 2022, Even NASSCOM backed that claim with their own <a href="https://www.nasscom.in/newsline/envisioning-future-jobs">study</a> indicating how <keyword id="107950" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="20" keywordseo="artificial-intelligence">artificial intelligence</keyword> (AI), internet of things (IoT) and big data analytics would drive <keyword id="59516" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="IT-hiring">IT hiring</keyword> in the future. And, while the change in the nature of IT jobs will create 133 million new opportunities, it will also result in the displacement of 75 million jobs by 2022 <a href="https://www.weforum.org/press/2018/09/machines-will-do-more-tasks-than-humans-by-2025-but-robot-revolution-will-still-create-58-million-net-new-jobs-in-next-five-years/">according</a> to the World Economic Forum. This phenomenon can be observed in India where the overall number of employees in the top two IT firms in India — TCS and Infosys — has increased, but the net addition per quarter has been dipping in the past two quarters.  But, it’s not that jobs don’t exist — the problem is more about the growing skill gap that is indicative of a much more severe issue at an education level. Employers are looking to hire individuals for very specific tasks that require a specialised skill set meanwhile higher education institutes are still giving out generic and broad degrees. In October 2018, more than 50,000 data science and machine learning (ML) jobs were <a href="https://www.businesstoday.in/latest/trends/jobs-in-data-science-machine-learning-vacant-in-india/story/285446.html">vacant</a> in India. And, as companies look for highly skilled workers, the unskilled and low-skilled portion of the workforce will suffer further. Even when it comes to artificial intelligence (AI) there were <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/india-has-a-booming-artificial-intelligence-sectorand-its-struggling-to-fill-over-4000-vacant-positions/articleshow/67154961.cms">reportedly</a> 4,000 vacant positions in December 2018 according to Analytics India Magazine study. Big data analytics is currently the ‘<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/big-data-and-analytics-may-be-the-hottest-sector-but-india-has-a-serious-dearth-of-data-scientists/articleshow/66860305.cms">hottest</a>’ sectors in IT, but India only has fewer than 10% of data scientists available globally. LinkedIn estimates that the demand for big data professionals will only increase in the future, hitting nearly 40% over the next two years. The situation is already so severe that earlier this year in February, over 150 individuals with Masters in Business Administration (MBA) and engineering degrees <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/in-india-mbas-and-engineering-graduates-compete-for-sanitation-jobs/articleshow/67866169.cms">applied</a> for the 14 available posts at the Sanitation Department in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

Hiring by Indian IT companies has grown 12 months in a row, up over three-fold

The speed and scale of the transition to <keyword id="107950" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="20" keywordseo="artificial-intelligence">artificial intelligence</keyword> is likely to take Asian governments by surprise, potentially causing economic and social shocks, according to <keyword id="600376" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="MIT-Technology-Review">MIT Technology Review</keyword>. In a report released Wednesday, the technology media outlet warns of the risk of Asia's employment landscape becoming "increasingly polarised" with a growing number of workers excluded from the value creation side of AI. "Decision-makers in Asia must assume that technology will continually evolve, making the need for continuous reskilling and training critical," said the report, adding that many governments in the region remain "systematically unprepared" for the changes ahead. The findings in the report were based on a survey of about 900 executives across 13 Asia-Pacific markets including the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Australia, India, Japan, Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore and South Korea. Over half of the respondents were from companies with more than US$1 billion in revenue. Potential disruption of job markets has been one of the most hotly debated issues around AI ethics. In a study of 15 countries, the World Forum estimates that AI - often called the fourth industrial revolution - will destroy 75 million jobs but create 133 million new ones by 2020. About 42 per cent of respondents surveyed said they thought AI would eliminate or reduce more jobs than it creates over the next five years. Less developed Asian economies are at greater risk of seeing more jobs eliminated by automation as a result of AI, the report noted. In comparison, richer countries have larger <keyword id="2796975" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="knowledge-worker">knowledge worker</keyword> sectors that can be "augmented" by AI and they have greater resources to invest in reskilling affected workers. "If you work in manufacturing in Bangladesh, if you work in the call centres in Manila, if you work in a business process outsourcing (BPO) in India - you're in real trouble," Michael Priddis, chief executive of Faethm, said in the report. The Philippines, India and Vietnam are each expected to experience a workforce automation rate of 8 to 9 per cent over the next five years and see 14 per cent of their manufacturing jobs disappear. In <keyword id="8692" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indonesia">Indonesia</keyword>, 13 per cent of jobs will be automated by AI within five years. "Asia's policymakers and business leaders must begin to rethink what employment means for their societies and their economies, recognising that AI's ultimate economic impacts are not yet known and will constantly evolve," the report said. "Jobs for life will cease to exist, just as lifelong learning becomes a permanent fixture of education systems." Despite the potential disruption of AI, 77 per cent of survey respondents expect their total headcount to increase over the next five years, including in functions where AI is already being deployed, while just 3 per cent see a headcount contraction. Most companies see three main drivers for adopting AI: enhancing customer satisfaction, speeding up decision making and reducing inefficiencies, according to the report. Only about one third listed the need to reduce labour costs as a top-three driver for AI. Jobs dealing with customers, such as sales, marketing, customer services and product development, will see the strongest growth from AI while back office functions including finance, human resources and administration will see reductions due to AI. Labour-constrained markets such as Singapore, Australia and Japan will be among the fastest to seize the opportunities created by AI, according to the report. Asia has become an emerging AI leader for both research and development and deployment of solutions to improve efficiency. According to the report, nearly half of all survey respondents have already deployed AI tools and technologies within their organisation. By 2020, over 90 per cent are expected to have done so. Shortage of internal AI talent, quality of data and investment costs remain the top challenges in deploying AI. "If China is locked in a battle for global AI leadership, Asian businesses elsewhere are having a tough fight for talent," noted the report. What inspired the venture: The idea came along around 3 years ago when Manoj was working on the <keyword id="6369782" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="Augmented-reality">augmented reality</keyword> concept at Adidas on bridging the physical and online store experience to solve customer issues such as <keyword id="1077554" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Product-search">product search</keyword>, colour, size and location. “In that mix, I essentially wanted to save time and hassle for all those generic problems that many of us face while shopping,” he recalls. “Those problems paved a way for me to look at various channels to resolve my personal shopping frustrations. And somewhere down the line, the business ideas that solve those problems started taking shape,” he adds. 
 
Why this offbeat name: No wonder it makes you curious. In essence, the name tells you what shopping is all about – product, price and location are the three other things involved in any shopping experience. In the start-up’s context, it also stands for convenience, consumer experience and consumer gratification. Hence, 3otherthings. 
 
What’s the pitch: An <keyword id="1948087" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Omni-channel-social-discovery-platform">omni-channel social discovery platform</keyword> that is bridging online and <keyword id="1948080" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Offline-retail">offline retail</keyword> experience. The USP: Unlike other social discovery platforms or recommendation sites, 3otherthings is helping <keyword id="1916416" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="offline-retailers">offline retailers</keyword> fight the trend called <keyword id="1468988" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Showrooming">showrooming</keyword> where customers visit brick-and-mortar stores to check out products and then go online to find better deals. 
 “To reverse this trend, we are supporting a wider phenomenon called ‘<keyword id="1948070" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Reverse-showrooming">reverse showrooming</keyword>’ where consumers search or browse products online and then enter the physical shop to make a purchase,” explains Manoj. According to him, the platform is a lifesaver for offline retailers in three ways. First, it offers the same convenience (enjoyed by e-commerce stores) when it comes to searching the physical store products online. Second, it makes their products viral and creates manifold visibility. Finally, it frees up offline retailers’ marketing budget, which was essentially handcuffed by traditional mediums such as magazines and newspaper to create product visibility without any measurement. 
 
How it works: Unlike other services like Wanelo or Polyvore where ‘trending’ and popular products are ranked to help drive e-commerce sales, 3otherthings focuses more on making a customer’s shopping journey easier. Here, one can access the inventory of nearby brick-and-mortar stores, along with curated and emotionally appealing products to choose from. You can either create a social <keyword id="45079" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="wish-list">wish list</keyword> containing all your favourite items from any online/offline store in just one click or reserve items from <keyword id="1915265" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="local-stores">local stores</keyword> and buy those at your convenience. You can also style your own outfit, seek <keyword id="497764" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Styling">styling</keyword> help and give style tips. 
 
Claim to fame: The platform is defined as an (aggregated) gateway to all <keyword id="1948091" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Lifestyle-shopping">lifestyle shopping</keyword> and was first soft-launched at TechCrunch Disrupt in New York this year. But the founders believe that the real claim to fame lies in changing the way online advertising is done today. People are already distancing themselves from clunky banner ads and it is becoming imperative to offer some kind of experience to customers before they buy an item. So adding <keyword id="1948092" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Contextual-product-discovery">contextual product discovery</keyword> could change the game entirely. “By bringing offline inventory online, the platform has given more power to consumers. However, this omni-channel solution has also given a big tool to retailers to capture consumer insights, offer personalised clienteling experience and measure product campaigns for their offline products,” says Manoj. 
 
Show me the money: The company is currently bootstrapped and its revenue stream is based on the monthly subscription model for retailers where they get ‘Click and Brick’ service, SKU-level consumer insights and comparative analytics. The platform, however, remains free for consumers. 
 Although the site is just a month old, quite a few top retailers have joined the platform. These include Forever New, Pepe, <keyword id="148126" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Being-Human">Being Human</keyword>, RIOT and some classy boutique décor stores such as Tangent and Mozaic. “Our current focus is on creating user engagement and bringing more brands on board to really become the most valuable platform from a customer’s perspective. This done, money will follow,” adds Manoj. 
 
Biggest challenge: Gaining traction and building a really large <keyword id="445843" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="customer-base">customer base</keyword>. <keyword id="623994" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="social-commerce">Social commerce</keyword> thrives on <keyword id="1948095" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Product-curation">product curation</keyword> by users – so growing the user base is the key focus area. Reaching out to <keyword id="661941" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="non-metro-cities">non-metro cities</keyword> and brining more brands on board are equally important. But the biggest challenge for e-commerce (or even for offline retail) is discovery, says Manoj. “I would spend so much more money if someone would just show me more things I’d love to buy. So we are working upon enhancing discovery and fine-tuning consumer experience.”
