In a significant ruling, The Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) in its judgement dated 24.09.2021 has overruled the complaint filed by the rival brand and observed that “there is no similarity in terms of concept and executional elements.” Amul Macho complained that Lux Cozi had blatantly copied their popular Ad concept and executional elements. However, the apex body has now observed that there is no resemblance in the advertisements. The complaint was made on grounds that Lux Cozi’s advertisement bears similarities to Amul Macho’s advertisement in general layout, copy, slogans, visual presentations, music and sound effects. The Consumer Complaints Council (CCC) observed that the advertisements barely had any similarities between them in terms of concept and executional elements. The CCC concluded that Lux Cozi’s advertisement is not similar to Amul Macho’s earlier run advertisement in general layout, copy, slogans, visual presentations, music or sound effects, so as to suggest plagiarism. The TVC was not in contravention of Chapter IV of the ASCI Code. Speaking on the glorious win, Saket Todi, Executive Director - Lux Industries, averred, “Our Lux Cozi advertisement is unique on individual points as well as in totality, and any semblance is fleeting and only in respect of elements commonly used in the trade, such as shape and colour of the garment. Through this verdict passed by ASCI, it is now an established fact that the advertisement bears no similarity whatsoever. The Complainant’s advertisement was last aired in 2007, and thereafter, banned. No reputation, goodwill or brand equity can be vested in publicity/marketing material that has been banned to the public since the last 14 years. We respect the verdict by ASCI. Lux Cozi has a distinctive pedigree of innovation be it in product launches or brand building initiatives. The verdict reinforces the fact that brand Lux Cozi is built on a foundation of truth and trust.” Udit Todi, Executive Director - Lux Industries commented, “We welcome the verdict passed by ASCI. Lux Cozi wins legal battle against Amul Macho for its latest commercial starring actor Varun Dhawan

<ul><li>Dairy companies like Amul and Mother Dairy have raised their milk prices by ₹2 citing the rise in input costs.</li><li>The price rise will reflect from August 17.</li><li>The major reason behind the rise in price of milk is the steep increase in costs of energy, packaging, logistics and cattle feed.</li></ul>Indian dairy and cattle farmers have been barely recovering their input costs thanks to the increase in fodder and fertiliser prices. This increased cost has been passed on to dairy companies and now, consumers will also have to spend a little extra on their milk. Mother Dairy and Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation’s (GCMMF) Amul have announced a hike in their sticker price by ₹2 per litre, which will reflect from August 17. Mother Dairy and Amul, along with other companies like Parag and Verka, had raised their milk prices by ₹2 in <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/india/news/why-did-amul-parag-verka-increase-milk-prices/articleshow/89926050.cms">March</a> citing the rise in input costs. “Mother Dairy is compelled to raise its liquid milk prices by ₹2/litre with effect from August 17, 2022. The new prices will be applicable for all milk variants,” said Mother Dairy in a press release. The increase of ₹2 per litre translates into a 4% increase in maximum retail price (MRP). In Ahmedabad and Saurashtra markets, a 500 ml pack of Amul Gold will now cost ₹31, Amul Taaza ₹25 and Amul Shakti ₹28. “The GCMMF has decided to increase the milk prices by ₹2 per litre in the markets of Ahmedabad and Saurashtra region in Gujarat, Delhi NCR, West Bengal, Mumbai and all other markets where Amul is marketing its fresh milk," said Amul. Why are milk prices surging? Dairy companies have been experiencing a surge in varied input costs, which have increased multifold during the last five months. "The cattle feeding cost alone has increased by approximately 20% compared to last year. Considering the rise in input costs, our member unions have also increased farmers' prices in the range of 8-9% over the previous year," said Amul’s statement. The farm prices of raw milk have increased by about 10-11% in the said period. In June, the GST council had also imposed a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/finance/news/pre-packed-meats-curds-paneer-and-puffed-rice-will-now-attract-gst/articleshow/92533389.cms">5% tax on dairy item</a>s like ‘pre-packed, pre-labelled curd, lassi, paneer, and buttermilk’ and increased GST on dairy machinery from 12% to 18%, further adding to the costs. "The price revision shall help in sustaining remunerative prices for our milk producers and encourage them for higher milk production," Amul’s release said about its latest price hike. However, the revision in prices is likely to affect the dairy product-loving Indians, who have been switching to local unbranded products as they look for ways to deal with higher prices.

All the industries have collapsed and as a result unemployment has increased," Swamy had said, adding that Rajan should be sent back to Chicago at the earliest. 
 Swamy even wrote to the Indian Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> asking for the immediate sacking of the <keyword id="30067" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="RBI">RBI</keyword> Governor, alleging that is ‘mentally not fully Indian’ and has wrecked the economy. 
 
His comments naturally caused a lot of debate and speculations are rife on whether Rajan will be given a second term after his first term comes to an end on September.

daCunha Communications, which makes outdoor <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=advertisements">ads</a> for <keyword id="6531735" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gujarat-Cooperative-Milk-Marketing-Federation">Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation</keyword>'s (GCMMF's) Amul brand, is facing ire on social media as the film is being considered <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=sexist">sexist</a> and regressive. 
 
Amul fifth digital film-‘Har Ghar Amul Ghar’-went live on September 19 and ever since is attracting criticism. 
 
However, GCMMF has denied allegations of the film promoting gender bias. 
 
So much so was the anger that Sanjay Tripathy, senior executive vice president and head of marketing, product, analytics, digital and ecommerce at HDFC Life, tagged Jayen Mehta, general manager for planning and marketing at GCMMF, on Facebook and wrote: "Stop this ad." 
 
People also gave negative comments to the ad on <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=youtube">YouTube</a>. 
 
The digital film shows a little girl decorating a room with dolls and she places a Barbie doll and Winnie-the-Pooh soft toy inside a baby cot. Enters the father with a newborn baby. He places the baby in the crib and replaces the Winnie and the Barbie with a Spiderman toy saying, "Bhai isse thodi na khelega?" 
 
The father talks to the little girl who seems visibly upset as her efforts to greet the baby went futile. 
 
Finally, when the girl says that she is disappointed as her baby brother won't be playing with her "dolls", the father starts teaching her to play cricket so that she can play with her brother. 
 
Experts say the ad was irresponsible and was not progressive. 
 
Prasad Challapalli, senior VP and head of iContract (part of Contract Advertising), wrote on Facebook: "The father rebuking the girl in the beginning was totally unnecessary. And insensitive in today's day and age of #BoyBrowsing -when girls get to decide what they want to do. End of the day, it does nothing for the brand except generate backlash."

This Amul ad is going viral for all the wrong reasons

Advertisements featuring the cricketers with new slogans for each time have already hit television screens across the country. The enormous popularity of the Indian Premier League – the 20-over cricket match with players from across country teams – is evident in the sold out stands seen at stadiums, high television ratings and recurring prime time slots, with nearly half of the audience being women. Yet, the majority of Indian commercials aired during IPL continue to target just men, a reflection of the typical gender stereotyping still common among advertisers. Even a cursory look at the latest numbers on viewership should make Indian brands sit up and evaluate why they need to switch their strategy – and do so urgently. According to a new report by BARC, IPL reaches to 77% more women than any primetime Hindi General Entertainment Channel (GEC). The report added that IPL reaches out to 262 million women in just 51 days as opposed to a top GEC channel which manages to garner 200 million in a year. Overall, women today hold a 47% television audience share during IPLs. It’s been 12 years since IPL launched and it still manages to be a big favourite of advertisers, attracting big spends. An <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/services/advertising/rs-2000-cr-ad-spends-set-aside-for-ipl/articleshow/67767108.cms">ET</a> report states that for <keyword id="6128971" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ipl-2019">IPL 2019</keyword>, advertisers are expected to spend more than ₹2000 crore, which is a jump from Star India’s last year’s revenue of ₹1,750 crore from IPL ads. Popular phone manufacturer Vivo Electronics Corp <a href="https://www.livemint.com/Opinion/ZBNS9iU91o4k7CN2b8826I/Why-IPL-continues-to-charm-audiences-advertisers.html">paid </a>₹2,199 crore for a five-year sponsorship of IPL, a big big jump from Pepsi’s ₹400 crore 5-year deal. One of the most successful ad campaigns that took off during IPL is Vodafone Zoozoo. The Zoozoos took off from the second season of the IPL and also went on to win <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/latest-headlines/story/vodafones-zoozoo-campaign-wins-award-71192-2010-04-07">awards</a> for successful marketing strategy. Brands can no longer ignore Indian women during the country's most popular sporting event

 Similarly, <keyword id="3026737" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Gujarat-Cooperative-Milk-Marketing-Foundation">Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Foundation</keyword> (GCMMF), the maker behind the Amul brand of dairy products has been running ads emphasizing on the fact that their products are undergoing regular quality checks. Its rival, Mother Dairy is also not behind. Its ad campaign doing the rounds on social media shows its consumer on a plant visit. 
 
Meanwhile Nestle, the brand which was worst hit by regulators is already plotting the comeback of Maggi, piggybacking on its recent Maggi videos attracting around nine lakhs views in three days. 
 
"These short films reflect the spontaneity and affection between consumers and Maggi. We are making efforts to get Maggi Noodles back on the shelves and have been overwhelmed by the messages of love and support that we receive each day. Such messages strengthen our resolve to be back with our beloved consumers. We want to share the warmth of our relationship through these films," told a Nestle Indian spokesperson to Economic Times.

Nestle, ITC, Amul among companies to start consumer engagement exercises

Owing to the fear of contracting the virus by going out, brands had to rethink and realign their strategies to reach out to consumers in new ways. Online shopping platforms opened up their services to deliver 24*7 and people started hoarding daily essentials, including FMCG products. So, many FMCG brands partnered with e-commerce platforms like Dunzo, Flipkart, Grofers, BigBasket, etc to deliver within the comfort of consumers’ homes. Consumer habits also evolved with COVID and ‘immunity’ became the buzzword in the FMCG industry. Marketers reverted by launching ready-to-eat meal options and immunity-based packaged goods. However, with COVID vaccine now a reality, consumer sentiment is already picking up and the economy is in revival mode. Going by the latest reports, 2021 will augur well for small retailers leading to an increased sales from local markets and <keyword id="6513856" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="kirana-stores">kirana stores</keyword>. According to <keyword id="346535" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nielsen-India">Nielsen India</keyword>, after an unprecedented decline of -19% in the Jan-Mar quarter, FMCG industry displayed signs of recovery in Q3’20 with a 1.6% growth (versus Q3 ‘19). In 2020, rural markets outperformed urban India and became critical for FMCG giants. Brands relied on rural markets to drive growth during the trying times. FMCG witnessed a double digit growth of 10.6% in Q3’20 in Rural India, while the bigger cities (&gt;1 Lakh population including metros and Town Class 1) played catch-up. The rural markets bounced back in Q3 handsomely on the back of support provided by the government as well as good agriculture, reverse migration and a lower unemployment rate. With immunity being the focus in the ‘new normal’, new launches have been made in the health and hygiene basket including categories like hand sanitisers, floor cleaners, toilet cleaners, antiseptic liquids. These new launches contributed to 37% (in value) of all new launches in the COVID period (Nielsen India). According to Kantar Worldpane, FMCG sector in India is expected to report a 4-5% volume growth in FY21, driven by rural areas that are expected to grow two percentage points ahead of the urban regions that are hit harder by COVID-19 pandemic. While COVID-19 has curtailed economic growth in the FMCG sector, experts are now optimistic that the industry will see an appreciable improvement this year. As per Mondelēz International’s recently released second annual State of Snacking report, 9 in 10 Indian adults (88%) say they are snacking more or the same (22%) during the pandemic than before it, with millennials being especially likely to say they prefer snacks over meals (85%). A majority expect this trend to continue, saying they plan to continue eating small snacks throughout the day, as opposed to fewer large meals (82%), and that snacking will be part of their “new normal” even after the pandemic ends (81%). Ultimately, 8 in 10 believe “the current pandemic will have a long-term impact on how we consume snacks as a society” (81%). This unprecedented year has also brought about a significant behavioral change especially on how consumers are purchasing snacks. A majority say they have started to buy snacks online more often than they do in-store or offline (74%), with 8 in 10 planning to continue shopping for snacks online once the pandemic is over (81%). A similar percentage also say the pandemic has opened their eyes to so many more ways to get snacks than they knew existed before (80%), including half who have discovered snacks to try on social media (50%). It was also very heartening to note that, even while at home this year, Indians are social snackers. With health and safety continuing to be a priority, consumers are trying to strike a balance between indulging and being mindful (80%), and in doing so; they (80%) are relying on trusted snacking brands like Cadbury, OREO, and Bournvita, seeking assurance of safety and superior quality. FMCG: The trends to watch out for in 2021

<ul><li>Brands in India are desperate to associate with budding sports stars and ready to jump onto any opportunity that helps them stay relevant.</li><li>However, when it comes to celebrating our athlete’s wins, brands often take the focus away from the champion and make it all about themselves.</li><li>The issue of brands dominating social media moments and making it about themselves isn’t new and the answer is in the question itself -- simply avoid making moments about yourself but a lot of brands don't seem to get it right. </li><li>Advertising folks tell us how to get your moment marketing right without taking away the focus from the trend.</li></ul>It is day 6 of <keyword id="395647" type="SPORT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tokyo-Olympics">Tokyo Olympics</keyword> 2020 and the Indian contingent has bagged one silver medal in weightlifting so far. A month before the Tokyo Olympics began, from Mia to Omega, brands in India launched an array of campaigns to cheer our champions. Afterall, we have one of the largest contingents this time with 120 athletes from 85 disciplines and brands have followed suit by ensuring that they leave no stone unturned to support their athletes. The once-in-a-four-year summer tournament has attracted sponsorships from across categories. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has signed Edelweiss, INOX Group, Nippon Paint, Amul, Raymond, JSW Group, MPL Sports Foundation and Raymond as sponsors. Oakley, Mia by Tanishq, Visa India, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited, Puma India and sponsors JSW, Omega, BridgeStone and Rin have launched ads to celebrate the journeys of different athletes. After Mirabai Chanu won a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics on Saturday, according to her management company IOS Sports &amp; Entertainment, quite a few brands rushed to get her onboard. She created history by becoming the first Indian weightlifter to win the silver medal at the Olympic Games. Chanu also became the first Indian to win an Olympic medal at the 2020 Tokyo Games in the Women's 49 kg category. As per media reports, brands across categories like nutrition, sports brands, personal care, beverage and regional brands wanted to onboard the 26-year-old weightlifter as their brand ambassador for campaigns and long-term digital associations. So far, Chanu has partnered with Adidas and Mobil oil. After another silver feather in her cap, her endorsement fee is also expected to double. When it comes to Indian Premier League, the focus in brand campaigns and social media creatives is on Virat Kohli’s sixers or Mumbai Indian’s win. So, why are we not following the same rules for Tokyo Olympics? Advertising folks shared their thoughts on how to find the right balance between being a part of a social media moment and not making it all about yourself. Integrating a product into generic occasions such as Mother’s Day or Diwali is expected since the objective is to showcase how a particular brand of sweet or confectionery item can further uplift personal celebration. But in the case of special and specific events such as the Olympics, the larger narrative leans towards commemorating a shared national success, bringing the country together. Brands who are looking to capitalize on these fluid moments, are aiming to be a part of a trending conversation in the country. In addition to solidifying their support for the athletes, they want to gain visibility, build relevance with the audience, and create top of mind recall for themselves. It is a mark of upstanding creativity on the part of the brand when they can seamlessly integrate themselves into these conversations. Collectively, brands and creative agencies need to focus on celebrating the spirit of India and what it means for us as a country as opposed to the brand. When the association is slightly more refined and thoughtful, it will resonate with the audience and build engagement. In India, cricket is a religion. Thus automatically, the awareness about the sport, and its subsequent reach and engagement is very high. When brands associate themselves with Cricket and its players, they are hoping to piggy-back not only on the credibility of the players but also on the prestige that the sport enjoys in our country. While other sports such as weightlifting, badminton, archery are gaining momentum and popularity, it is still a far cry from Cricket. Thus, if brands want to adopt this narrative, they will have to create heroes in order to do so. In fact, when done tastefully and consistently, it’s even become part of culture (looking at you, Amul!). But it’s not scaled well on the internet. In the early 2010s, commenting on real-time events was novel, so even doing the bare minimum felt enough as long as you were capturing the moment. But latching onto trends, just to catch that inevitable spike in engagement, is still one of the most common false positives which brands that don’t have social/digital as a focus area tend to fall for. So, how do you not make it about yourself? By not making it about yourself. Simple. When you don’t use the athlete to talk about your brand, and instead, use the power and reach of your brand to hype the athlete/sport, the creative opportunities are endless: maybe change your DP to the athlete’s for a day, slide into their DM and congratulate them personally, or even more, remove the ‘end’ from the ‘trend’ and help sustain the conversation by supporting the sport altogether. One brand that’s led by example for this is OYO (their print ad that syncs your calendar to the games is only the latest in a series of campaigns where they’ve prioritized being a fan, before being a brand). But if you’re thinking “I’m not a sports brand. What legitimate value does endorsing/supporting a sport or an athlete add to my brand?”, there’s nothing criminal about that line of thinking too. When brands do moment marketing, the intent is to celebrate these athletes. Some of the brands get this right, but some got lost in the crowd. The key to any moment marketing campaign, be it sports or some other topic- is weaving a story with the brand values and not being in your face or doing a sales push. The brand that has been acting moment marketing is Amul, way before social media even existed. When we talk about an IPL team or a player from the cricket team acknowledged, we get to know a lot about the player, their personalities, their image, which becomes easier to draw a reference from their personality and weave it into a moment marketing post. Imagine doing that with an athlete about whom brands know nothing? The struggle in front of brands remains in what form the personality must represent in their brand value. So, most brands end up doing generic posts, which merely look like it is all about them and not about the athlete. I think brands need to do a lot more homework when they congratulate an athlete. Brands do topicals for every single thing, and Olympics as a whole are considered moment marketing - whatever happens within Olympics, especially with Indian players, becomes a moment to capitalise. ‘Capitalise’ is the operating word. Very few brands actually manage to come up with something creative, seamless, and impactful enough to actually mean something when it comes to ‘topicals’. Just scroll past it, unless you see something that strikes you visually or creatively. As far as I know, IPL is treated the same way, except there’s way more audience awareness so there’s more opportunity to do layered communication and bank on the audience to ‘get it’.
