While the list includes the iconic Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT) — it also featured a surprise entrant Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham from Coimbatore. Ranked at 90th position, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham entered the top 100 for the very first time — crawling up 51 spots from last year. <keyword id="1582424" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="THE-Rankings">The rankings</keyword> are based on 13 performance indicators including faculty, research and citations, industry income and international outlook. Hefty pay packets Recruiters like Microsoft, Cisco, Amazon and McKinsey &amp; Co too have been flocking this 16-year old university. This year, the institute placed 80% of its engineering batch and its salary is comparable to the elite IITs and NITs at ₹52 lakh per annum — offered by Atlassian. Cisco hired 27 students at ₹29 lpa while Amazon hired seven students at ₹28 lpa. “With more than 80 reputed companies visiting the campus since the placement season began in July 2019, more than 82% of B.Tech students are already placed in various organisations with good salary packages as per industry standards,” The New Indian Express<a href="https://www.newindianexpress.com/states/tamil-nadu/2020/feb/02/80-amrita-engg-students-get-placement-2097842.html"> reported </a>citing the institute’s statement. International students flock The institute, which was also featured in the Eminence scheme of the Human Resource &amp; Development ministry (MHRD) improved on average score and performance parameters such as industry income and international outlook, as per the Times Higher Education. It has comparatively higher intake of international students at 12% — against merely 2% at the iconic engineering and research institutions like IITs and IISc. The performance growth may be attributed to its international partnership for bilateral governmental research programmes. It has research collaborations with over 20 US universities across areas like cyber security. Saudi Arabia’s growth came despite it being a new entrant in the rankings after it gained the status of ‘secondary emerging’ last year. India also falls in the category of secondary emerging economies. The Emerging Economies University Rankings features institutions from countries categorised as ‘advanced emerging,’ ‘secondary emerging’ or ‘frontier’ by the London Stock Exchange’s FTSE group, which manages the indices of shares. Of the 12,000 law schools across the globe, these are the only two Indian law schools to make it to the global university rankings. Jindal Global Law School and National Law School break into the QS World University rankings

<ul><li>Indian universities rank almost as high as global universities in the engineering and technology domain. </li><li>According to the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings by subject, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, Delhi feature in the top 50 for the first time. </li><li>Department-wise, IIT Bombay and Kharagpur rank at 41st and 66th for mineral &amp; mining engineering and IIT Delhi stood at 49th for electrical &amp; electronic engineering. </li><li>Overall, five Indian institutions ranked in the top 100 universities, compared to three last year. This includes IIT Madras, Kharagpur and Kanpur. </li></ul>Indian engineers are well known around the world. Now, its universities are being ranked high especially in the engineering and technology domain. According to the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings by subject, India’s premier engineering institutions — Bombay and Delhi campus of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) — have been ranked in the top 50 universities for the very first time. IIT Delhi ranked 44th while IIT Bombay crawled up nine spots to rank 47th in the global list. Department-wise, IIT Bombay and Kharagpur rank at 41st and 66th for mineral and mining engineering and IIT Delhi stood at 49th for electrical and electronic engineering. "It is a significant achievement of our premiere engineering institutions, which has made India proud. This is the result of continuous efforts of our government to promote the environment of research and innovation in our educational institutions," Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank' said. Overall, five Indian institutions ranked in the top 100 universities, compared to three last year. This includes IIT Madras, Kharagpur and Kanpur. "This is the result of the various measures we have taken in the institute on boosting the research ecosystem on the campus, strengthening our connect with the external stakeholders, significantly enhanced internationalization efforts from the institute and various other measures initiated in the last three years," IIT Delhi director V Ramgopal Rao told news agency PTI. This comes as good news to the Indian universities that were striving to make a mark, globally. Nearly 20 universities were ranked in the top 200 in the <a href="https://www.qs.com/rankings-revealed-qs-wur-asia-2020/">QS World University Rankings: Asia 2020</a> this year. However, the IITs — Bombay, Delhi and Madras campuses — did not make it to the top 30. "Orders have been issued to five public institutions including IIT-Madras, IIT-Kharagpur, DU and University of Hyderabad, declaring them as IoEs," National Herald<a href="https://www.nationalheraldindia.com/india/iit-madras-bhu-iit-kharagpur-delhi-university-hyderabad-university-declared-as-institutions-of-eminence"> reported </a>citing Union HRD Minister <keyword id="60487" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ramesh-Pokhriyal">Ramesh Pokhriyal</keyword> Nishank. The move came after the recommendation of the University Grants Commission (UGC) after the reports from Empowered Expert Committee (EEC). It recommended 15 public and private institutions each for the status of IoE. However, the scheme will extend to 10 public and 10 private institutions. <ul><li>The Indian government is likely to announce names of 14 more institutes that can get the ‘Insitute of Eminence status.’ </li><li>It had earlier decided to bestow with the high- value status 20 institutions but it ended up selecting only six as most of the institutions were not eligible to be considered for the Eminence status. </li><li>Some of the public institutions being considered by the government include IIT-Madras, Delhi University, <keyword id="6361218" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="jadavpur-university">Jadavpur University</keyword>, IIT-Kharagpur and Anna University. </li></ul>The Central government is all set to add as many as 14 names of educational institutes of the list of ‘Institute of Eminence’. The government is likely to announce the shortlisted names of the educational institutes as soon as the assembly polls in the state of <keyword id="6355588" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="rajasthan">Rajasthan</keyword> and <keyword id="68884" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Telangana">Telangana</keyword> in India are over. It will then seek approval of the University Grants Commission in the meeting to be in the next few days, Economic Times<a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/services/education/eminence-tag-likely-for-14-more-institutes/articleshow/66979593.cms"> reported. </a> Empowered Expert Committee (EEC) had decided to accord six universities with the status of ‘Institute of Eminence’. While the government had earlier decided to list 20 institutes — 10 public institutes and 10 private institutes, it selected only six educational institutes because it didn’t find the rest of the institute to be fit for the Eminence tag. The process to shortlist the names of institutions is still in progress and the committee has still not submitted the report, said Economic Times citing EEC chairperson N Gopalaswami Among the public institutes on government’s radar include IIT-Madras, Delhi University, Jadavpur University, IIT-Kharagpur and Anna University. According to the report, the government may also shortlist KREA University and another greenfield varsity like the Jio Institute.
