These agreements offer a clear deadline as to when you might see auto manufacturers start manufacturing <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=self-driving+cars&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">self-driving cars.</a><br />

As of now, several <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Silicon+Valley&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Silicon Valley</a> biggies including <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Google&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Google</a> are working to develop <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=autonomous-vehicle&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">autonomous-vehicle</a> technology from scratch. However, Mobileye is widely considered as the segment leader given its market-share for components needed to offer <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=self-driving+cars&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">self-driving</a> features.<br />

In an interview with WSJ, Mobileye Chairman and Chief Technology Officer <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Amnon+Shashua&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Amnon Shashua</a> said that they’re ‘fully committed’ to make this work by 2019, and that these are ‘real programs’ we’re talking about. However, Shashua declined to name the two companies they’re working with.<br />

Interestingly, what he did say is that General Motors, BMW and Volkswagen are among five companies who’ll buy <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=self-driving+cars&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">self-driving</a> systems from them in 2018. The 2019 deal will allow these features to work in all conditions.<br />

As auto-makers are starting to take semiautonomous features seriously, Mobileye has offered components and software like emergency-brake assist or lane-departure prevention. While OpenAI isn't traded on public markets, artificial intelligence stocks that are public have been riding the wave.</p><p>Here's a list of five AI stocks that have seen a surge since November 29, the last trading day before ChatGPT launched. </p><h2><strong>Nvidia </strong></h2><p><em><strong>Ticker</strong>: <strong>NVDA</strong></em></p><p><strong><em>Percent gain: 23%</em></strong></p><p>Nvidia, best known for its design and production of graphics-processing chips, is embedded in the artificial intelligence craze, and the firm's technology is used for various AI integrations from self-driving cars to robots.</p><p>The Nvidia stock rally has also made founder and CEO <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/chatgpt-openai-nvidia-jensen-huang-wealth-artificial-intelligence-chip-stocks-2023-1">Jensen Huang</a> considerably richer as his wealth has grown by more than $5 billion so far this year, Bloomberg data shows.</p><p>Wall Street is also bullish. Citigroup analysts recently estimated that a boom in ChatGPT usage could translate to $3 billion-$11 billion in sales for Nvidia in the next 12 months. "We believe Nvidia has in ChatGPT a potentially meaningful compute demand driver," the bank said.</p><p>Meanwhile, analysts at Bank of America said Nvidia is a top potential winner from generative AI growth, and Wells Fargo said new chips from Nvidia are poised to gain from greater computing needs of AI tools like ChatGPT.</p><h2><strong>Ambarella</strong></h2><p><strong><em>Ticker: AMBA</em></strong></p><p><strong><em>Percent gain: 26% </em></strong></p><p>Ambarella is another chip company that serves the AI market. It designs semiconductors that are used in everything from entertainment consoles in cars to cellphones.</p><p>It also specializes in "system on a chip" semiconductors that combine multiple central processors on one logic board to provide artificial intelligence computing.</p><p>Ambarella chips are used in self-driving functions, and the company recently partnered with German auto supplier Continental on an autonomous driving venture. </p><h2><strong>Mobileye </strong></h2><p><strong>Ticker: MBLY</strong></p><p><em><strong>Percent gain: 39%</strong></em></p><p>Mobileye was spun off by Intel and focuses on self-driving technology and driver-assistance systems, including chips and cameras. Volkswagen, Ford, and GM are among its customers. The company has a near-fully autonomous system called SuperVision, and its Chauffeur product is designed to convert a car into a Level 4 self-driven vehicle.</p><p>Last week, the company beat quarterly forecasts and gave an upbeat 2023 revenue projection. CEO Amnon Shashua touted roughly $17 billion worth of bookings that extends through 2030. </p><p>"We expect SuperVision to be a very large growth driver in 2023 and beyond," he told analysts on an earnings call.</p><h2><strong>C3.ai</strong></h2><p><strong><em>Ticker: AI</em></strong></p><p><strong><em>Percent gain: 61%</em></strong></p><p>C3.ai is an artificial intelligence software suite provider, and has the success of ChatGPT to thank for its recent stock surge. <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/c3ai-stock-price-chatgpt-investor-frenzy-openai-success-artificial-intelligence-2023-1">Shares soared roughly 28% on Tuesday alone</a> on news that it would integrate ChatGPT into its product suite.</p><p>"The C3 Generative AI Product Suite integrates the latest AI capabilities from organizations such as Open AI, Google, and academia, and the most advanced models, such as ChatGPT and GPT-3 into C3 AI's enterprise AI products," C3.ai said in a Tuesday press release.</p><h2><strong>Alteryx</strong></h2><p><em><strong>Ticker: AYX</strong></em></p><p><em><strong>Percent gain: 28%</strong></em></p><p>Alteryx's software is best known for data and analytics, and the firm is also focused on furthering automation. The firm specializes in artificial intelligence integration, although on a smaller scale compared peers like Google and Meta. </p><p>The company will report quarterly results on February 9.</p>

If an autonomous vehicle is too cautious, no one will want to use it, Amnon Shashua, CEO of the self-driving software and hardware company <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/mobileye">Mobileye</a>, said in an interview with Business Insider. </p><p>"A customer is not going to take a ride to go from Point A to Point B knowing that it's going to take twice as long," he said, "even if there's a discount." </p><p>If you want to switch lanes in a city with dense, aggressive traffic, you can't always expect someone to let you in, Shashua said. You have to force your way in, without creating a collision; self-driving vehicles will have to learn how to do the same. To prepare for those kinds of challenges, <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/intc-stock">Mobileye</a> is testing its technology in an urban setting, Jerusalem, rather than a suburban one.</p><p>A self-driving system designed for and tested in a mild environment won't necessarily adapt to a more difficult one, Shashua said. Moving from easy to hard could require a substantial redesign of your technology.</p><p>"Complicated is not a smooth transition from simple," he said.</p><p>Acquired by Intel in 2017, Mobileye is developing software and hardware for self-driving cars, including computer chips and maps. The company's technology also powers advanced driver-assistance systems that are available today, like Nissan's ProPilot Assist, and safety features like automatic emergency-braking and forward collision-warning. Mobileye can use the revenue from its driver-assistance technology to fund the development of a fully-autonomous system.</p><p>Shashua believes it's important that autonomous-vehicle companies publicize the decision-making frameworks their vehicles will use, as doing so will make it easier to work with regulators. In 2017, Mobileye <a href="https://arxiv.org/pdf/1708.06374.pdf">published a paper</a> outlining the rules a vehicle driven by its technology would follow to avoid and respond to possible collisions.</p><p>"We told ourselves that if it's not transparent, and if it's not out there in an open way, we cannot engage with regulatory bodies," Shashua said.</p><p>A self-driving vehicle also needs sensors - like cameras, radar, and lidar (which emit pulses of light to detect and locate objects) - that allow it to understand its environment. Many autonomous-vehicle companies are pairing sensors so they can compensate for each other's weaknesses. Cameras, for example, can have trouble with shadows and bright lights, but lidar and radar sensors don't.</p><p>To Shashua, that isn't enough. Mobileye wants to create two separate sensor "streams" that can work without the other. That means Mobileye is developing a self-driving system that can operate reliably with only cameras, and another one that needs only lidar and radar, then putting the two together. If the company can pull that off, it will make the odds of a sensing mistake "infinitesimally low," Shashua said.</p><p>Mobileye plans to begin giving rides in self-driving cars in Tel Aviv this year, before expanding to the rest of Israel in 2023. The CEO of Mobileye explains why self-driving cars can't be too cautious

"An actor whose DNA isn't software has no chance."</p><p>Shashua has an enviable perspective. He cofounded Mobileye in 1999, and the company was acquired by Intel in 2017 for just over $15 billion. Since then, Mobileye has been <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/intel-mobileye-ceo-yes-to-global-robo-taxis-2019-7-1028339936">codifying a three-pronged overall strategy</a>: self-driving systems, mapping and data, and a regulatory framework.</p><p>Autonomous mobility is at a critical juncture. Considered the stuff of science-fiction less than a decade ago, a surge in progress by companies such as Alphabet's Waymo and Cruise (acquired by General Motors in 2016) has put driverless vehicles on the streets of major US cities. </p><h2>Lots of money and lots of time</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Mobileye</span></p><p class="caption">Mobileye has outlined a broad, multi-pronged strategy for self-driving systems.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>But just as more autonomous vehicles has arrived, the difficulty scale of the challenge to build a business around the technology has become apparent.</p><p>"There aren't going to be many players," Shashua said. "The investment required is huge. And it isn't just money, it's also time."</p><p>Mobileye, he expects, should be one of those players. On Tuesday the company revealed a 20% year-over-year revenue increase, bolstered by the company's driver-assist technologies, as well as a deal with China's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/nio">NIO</a>, an electric-car manufacturer that's been compared with Tesla and that has endured some choppy waters since its late-2018 IPO.</p><p>"NIO will integrate Mobileye's industry-leading self-driving-system to build highly automated and autonomous vehicles for consumer markets in China and other major territories," Mobileye said in a statement.</p><p>"NIO will also work with Mobileye to develop a robo-taxi variant of their next generation vehicle which will be exclusively sold to Mobileye for global deployment of robotaxi-based ride-sharing services."</p><p>"China is a very attractive," Shashua said. That isn't a novel sentiment - China's vehicle market, the world's biggest, is already much larger than the United States' and projected to grow by millions of annual unit sales in the coming decades.</p><p>Critically, Mobileye's deal with NIO entails a consumer application of self-driving technology, in addition to a ride-hailing execution. According to Shashua, the deal is for 30,000 cars in China, with a new model arriving in 2022 that should showcase Mobileye's consumer-focused autonomous system.</p><h2>Taking a broad view of autonomy - including regulations</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="http://www.apimages.com/metadata/Index/Financial-Markets-Wall-Street-Mobileye-IPO/12e79a9d3c0c4737b70074eabd051f3b/1/0">Richard Drew/AP</a></span></p><p class="caption">Mobileye staged an IPO in 2014.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Mobileye has taken perhaps the broadest view of autonomy of any of the big names in the space. Shashua considers the opportunity to be multifaceted, and while Mobileye has worked on self-driving hardware and software, it's also joined with government mapping agencies and attacked the vexing problem of regulating autonomous vehicles.</p><p>"If you don't have clear regulations up front, accidents will kill this industry," he said. "A human can have lapse of judgment, but a machine can't."</p><p>Shashua genuinely wants to create an autonomous future that makes good on promises of drastically reduced fatalities from transportation. Even in 2019, 35,000 people are killed in auto-related accidents in the US alone.</p><p>"It's not tolerable to have a single accident that you're liable for," he said.</p><p>He pointed out that accidents can't be entirely avoided. But it is possible to create a "framework" that guarantees a given technology could never cause mishaps.</p><p>"Under this model our machine will never cause an accident," he said. "Unless there's a failure."</p><p>As far as the shakeout on the self-driving business that to a degree is currently underway, Shashua is unflinching in his assessment.</p><p>"For many many players, this kind of technology isn't in their skillset," he said. "It's much more difficult than what they thought. Alphabet's Waymo, formerly known as the Google Car project, is widely thought to have been attacking the problem the longest, starting in 2009 and beginning commercialization in 2018.</p><p>But Israel-based Mobileye has been at it for a decade longer. Founded in 1999, the company was acquired by Intel in 2017 for just over $15 billion.</p><p>Since then, founder and CEO Amnon Shashua has been expressing a rather broad view of mobility and autonomy. <a href="https://newsroom.intel.com/editorials/navigating-winding-road-toward-driverless-mobility">In an op-ed published at Intel's corporate website Tuesday</a>, he summarized his perspective - and provided a major look ahead to how Mobileye and Intel intend to move forward.</p><p><em><strong>Read more:</strong> <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/intel-mobileye-british-government-partner-mapping-data-2019-1">Intel's Mobileye and the British government have found an unexpected way for self-driving data to improve infrastructure</a></em></p><p>At the moment, as Shashua points out, self-driving is about three distinct systems: driver-assist features; autonomous robo-taxis; and self-driving technology in individual cars. For Waymo, General Motors-owned Cruise, and increasingly, Tesla, the robo-taxi approach is shaping up to be the quickest means to bring autonomy to market. To this push, Shashua has added the need for companies to assess the regulatory framework, as governments move to oversee what has been essentially a large-scale science project.</p><p>"The auto industry is gradually realizing that autonomy must wait until regulation and technology reach equilibrium, even for limited use cases such as highway driving or level 3 complex hand-over scenarios in which the driver and car exchange control," Shashua writes.</p><p>"The best place to get this done is through the robotaxi phase."</p><h2>The regulatory aspect</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Thomson Reuters</span></p><p class="caption">A device, part of Mobileye driving assist system, is seen on the dashboard of a vehicle in Jerusalem.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>According to Shashua, "It will be easier to develop laws and regulations governing a fleet of robo-taxis than for privately owned vehicles." The key difference would entail licensing fleet operators, of which there will be few, versus adding self-driving evaluations to the existing licensing of millions of human drivers.</p><p>As a result, while Shashua and Mobileye don't contemplate abandoning the broad view, in terms of the shakeout, the company is "all-in on the global robotaxi opportunity," he writes.</p><p>"Our hands-on approach with as much of the process as possible enables us to maximize learnings from the robotaxi phase and be ready with the right solutions for automakers when the time is right for ... production passenger cars."</p><p>The major players in autonomous mobility are all hedging their bets, to a degree. Waymo has developed what it calls a "driver" - a suite of hardware and software that can be applied to everything from electric luxury cars to heavy trucks. Cruise aims to roll out a ride-hailing service in a clearly defined urban area, such as San Francisco, to maximize fleet usage and concentrate the business where the most customers are.</p><p>Mobileye has sought ancillary applications (<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/intel-mobileye-british-government-partner-mapping-data-2019-1">including detailed maps</a>) and to codify its regulatory expertise, while not rising so far above the fray that it misses out on good commercial opportunities. This is the thinking-person's strategy, but then again Shashua has spent more time thinking about the challenge of autonomy than just about anyone else.</p><p>And what's now clear to him is that while a lot of people might have dreamed of owning a car that can drive itself, they probably won't. Instead, Israel-based Mobileye is offering customers, clients, and partners a one-stop solution for autonomous mobility.</p><p>The company, acquired by Intel in 2017, is now pushing the envelope on its flexible business model. At the Consumer Electronics Show - CES - in Las Vegas on Tuesday, Mobileye announced a deal with the Beijing Public Transport Corporation to bring autonomous mobility to Beijing's residents. </p><p>"The partnership aims to promote the development of autonomous driving technology in public <keyword id="34991" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="transportation">transportation</keyword>, establish a new industry standard and improve overall quality of public transportation services," Mobileye said in a statement.</p><p>Increasingly, Mobileye is operating sort of like the IBM of autonomous transportation. While Alphabet's Waymo is focused on developing a high-tech "driver" made of hardware and software that can be dropped into any vehicle, cyborg-style, and Cruise is building AV systems into GM vehicles, Mobileye is functioning as a self-driving consultant that can also provide multilayered hardware and software solutions.</p><p><em><strong>Read more: </strong><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/intel-mobileye-british-government-partner-mapping-data-2019-1">Intel's Mobileye and the British government have found an unexpected way for self-driving data to improve infrastructure</a></em></p><p>In fact, Mobileye's approach goes beyond nuts-and-bolts and bits-and-bytes, as the deal with BPTC shows. The collaboration joins Mobileye's "AV Kit" - which the company calls a "turn-key" Level 4 self-driving system, meaning that it can all but eliminate human input - with a "Responsibility Sensitive Safety" model.</p><p>RSS is basically an open-source guidebook for how AVs should behave in real life. Mobileye designed it to provide a standardized way for its technologies to be safely applied.</p><h2>Safety is the most important feature</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Thomson Reuters</span></p><p class="caption">Mobileye CEO Amnon Shashua.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>"Safety has always been our North Star," Mobileye CEO Amnon Shashua said in a statement to accompany the BPTC announcement. "We view it as a moral imperative to pursue a future with autonomous vehicles, but to not wait for it when we have the technology to help save more lives today."</p><p>According to <span>Jack Weast, a Mobileye vice-president, the deal represents a vital proof-point for AV Kit and RSS.</span></p><p><span>"AV Kit isn't a one-off," he told Business Insider. "We can retrofit existing vehicles."</span></p><p><span>The RSS aspect, he added, can help a government determine if an AV will operate safely. </span></p><p><span>"We need an industry standard," he said. "RSS is open, not proprietary. It formally and mathematically defines safety."</span></p><p><span>Weast also noted that RSS can play a role even before fully driverless vehicles arrive on roadways in major numbers. </span></p><p><span>"Why wait?" he asked. "RSS can be active while humans are still doing the driving."</span></p><p><span>As the autonomous space evolves over the next few years, Mobileye has carved out a unique space. Like Ford, it's stressing safety. Cruise and Waymo are equally safety-focused, but they're closer to commercial applications - Waymo with a rollout in the Phoenix area, and Cruise with plans to hit the streets officially in 2019. </span><span></span></p><p><span>But Mobileye is also trying to negotiate the gray area between the assorted driver-assist features now available (some of which it powers) and the far-off world of full autonomy. This is a foggy realm at the moment, full of questions. Intel's Mobileye is taking its ready-to-go self-driving technology to China to solve public-transit problems

<p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Intel</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>Roads and highways are about to get more crowded with self-driving car prototypes.</span></p><p><span>The latest company to join the race is <a href="http://markets.businessinsider.com/stock/INTC-Quote">Intel</a>, the giant chipmaker, which said on Wednesday that it's building a fleet of 100 self-driving vehicles. </span></p><p><span>The first cars will hit the streets by the end of the year, <a href="https://newsroom.intel.com/news/intel-mobileye-integration-plans-build-fleet-autonomous-test-cars/">Intel said. </a></span></p><p><span>The move follows Intel's $15.3 billion acquisition of Mobileye, an Israeli based company that makes computer vision technology used for self-driving vehicles. The acquisition officially closed on Tuesday and Intel isn't wasting any time.</span></p><p><span>The fleet of 100 cars will include multiple brands and vehicle types to show how the Intel and Mobileye technology can be used by different car makers and other potential customers.</span></p><h2><span>Watch out Waymo</span></h2><p><span>Intel said the test cars will be "Level 4", referring to the NHTSA classification of autonomous vehicles. Level 4 is the second highest rating and means the car is fully autonomous and is designed to perform all critical driving functions (but not necessarily in all conditions).</span></p><p><span>The cars will be tested in the United States, Israel, and Europe. The idea is to test and train the fleet in geographically diverse places so that the cars can be deployed anywhere in the world. Mobileye will continue to be based in Israel, and its cofounder Amnon Shashua will lead Intel's efforts. </span></p><p><span>The cars will combine Mobileye's sensing and mapping technologies with Intel's 5G and open compute capabilities for a "complete car-to-cloud system." In the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2017/08/08/technology/intel-mobileye-driverless-cars.html?rref=collection%2Fsectioncollection%2Ftechnology&amp;action=click&amp;contentCollection=technology&amp;region=rank&amp;module=package&amp;version=highlights&amp;contentPlacement=2&amp;pgtype=sectionfront">New York Times,</a> Shashua said that Mobileye's upcoming EyeQ5 processor would make the cars twice as powerful as the current products. </span></p><p><span>The company said the combination of skills within the two companies makes the deployment of a standalone test fleet possible almost immediately. Intel is building a fleet of 100 self driving cars and it wants to start testing them this year

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Thomson Reuters</span></p><p class="caption">Mobileye is based in Israel.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul class="summary-list"><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/intel">Intel's</a> Mobileye has joined with Ordnance Survey, Britain's national mapping agency.</li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/mobileye">Mobileye</a> and Ordnance Survey will combine geospatial maps of the island nation with Mobileye's self-driving data.</li><li>The results will be extremely detailed maps that can be used by clients such as utilities and telecommunications firms.</li></ul><p>On Monday, Mobileye chose CES in Las Vegas to announce a partnership in Great Britain. </p><p>Characterizing the deal as an "agreement to bring high-precision location data to UK agencies and businesses," Mobileye demonstrated how the huge amounts of data collected by self-driving technologies can be applied to unexpected challenges.</p><p>The partnership is between Mobileye, an Israel-based startup acquired by Intel in 2017, and Ordnance Survey, a British government agency that has been around since 1745 and has responsibility for detailed mapping of the island nation.</p><p>"The deal demonstrates the utility of mapping innovation beyond future autonomous vehicles," Mobileye said in a statement.</p><p>"It is a prime example of how Mobileye's unique mapping capabilities can extend the value of location data to businesses in new market segments, such as smart cities. The data has become a new commodity that can be refined in ways that are useful.</p><p>In the case of the Mobileye-Ordnance partnership, maps of extreme precision can be created and offered to customers such as utilities and telecoms; these clients need to know exactly where underground and above-ground infrastructure overlap. </p><p>"They've never had high-level-enough, above-ground maps, relative to what's underground," <span>Jack Weast, a Mobileye vice-president, told Business Insider.</span></p><p><span>He added that the partnership opens up new lines of revenue and provides a means to make money off data being captured by vehicles equipped with Mobileye tech.</span></p><p><span>The deal goes beyond monetization, however. Intel's Mobileye and the British government have found an unexpected way for self-driving data to improve infrastructure

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Screenshot</span></p><p class="caption">BMW's concept vehicle at CES.</p></div><p></p></div></div>BMW declared it has the recipe to win the self-driving car race at the Consumer Electronics Show on Wednesday.</p><p>The company said it will test 40 self-driving cars in the second half of 2017 through a partnership with Intel and Mobileye. The partnership, first announced in July, will allow the trio to collect data in order to release a production-ready, self-driving car in 2021.</p><p>But the most significant part of BMW's announcement was that it has made a "scalable architecture" that other automakers can choose to adopt to help collect data. </p><p>Data collection is a vital part of developing self-driving technology. Data on everything from how <span>traffic flows on a highway to how cars react on a snowy road helps self-driving cars learn to react to different situations. The more data self-driving cars have to work with, the faster they learn to handle more difficult driving situations.</span></p><p><span>Unlike some of its rivals, BMW is looking to crowdsource this data.</span></p><p>"Rather than trying to set us apart from the world, we tell the world to come and join us," Amnon Shashua, co-founder and CTO of Mobileye, said at CES. "There's lots to be gained by sharing data, sharing resources."</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>HERE</span></p><p class="caption">HERE's Real Time Traffic service.</p></div><p></p></div></div>BMW teamed up with Mercedes and Audi to acquire HERE, the former mapping division of Nokia, in September. Doing so allows the automakers to share real-time data on things like traffic flow and inclement weathers so the cars can respond faster and smarter.</p><p>Naturally, BMW isn't the only company taking this approach. Google acquired Waze, a traffic and navigation app, in 2013. Now anyone who is driving around with Waze open on their phone is providing real-time data on traffic conditions and roads that Waymo, Google's self-driving car company, can use for autonomous navigation.</p><p>The beauty of Waze has been that it isn't limited by which vehicle you drive, making it the company to beat when it comes to mapping systems for self-driving cars. BMW clearly recognizes that drawing data from just its own cars isn't enough, hence why it's continuing to expand the number of companies it works with to collect data.</p><p>"What really sets us apart is this is the first inclusive program I'm aware of," Shashua said. "All others are very protective, are guarding their territory. And we are saying the opposite, come join us."</p><p>Tesla is producing its cars with new hardware that will eventually enable them to by completely driverless. The company is using real-world data collected by its vehicles on the road to advance the system and currently has 1.3 billion miles worth of data. But Tesla can only draw real-world data from its Autopilot-enabled cars, which some may see as limiting.</p><p>Waymo has partnered with Fiat Chrysler for its self-driving car efforts.</p><p>The advancement of self-driving car tech will come down to data and how much the cars can learn to drive in any situation. BMW is making its move by casting a wider net.</p><p>"Many innovators and some marketing pros are trying to perfect this, I think most of them will fail," Klaus Fröhlich, BMW's head of research and development, said during the company's CES press conference. BMW just made a big move to take on Tesla and Google

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Having <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/intel-mobile-withdrawal-may-sink-microsoft-windows-10-continuum-2016-5">missed the boat on smartphones</a>, and with the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/pc-market-shrinking-five-years-straight-good-news-for-dell-hp-2017-1">PC industry in decline</a>, Intel needs to find a new place to sell the chips that are the bread and butter of its business.</p><p>On Monday, the company revealed its answer: cars.</p><p>Intel is spending a whopping $15.3 billion, the second largest acquisition ever in its 50-year history, to buy <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/intel-mobileye-acquisition-report-2017-3">self-driving car tech company Mobileye</a>.</p><p><span>If self-driving vehicles are going to be the future, as </span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/report-10-million-self-driving-cars-will-be-on-the-road-by-2020-2015-5-6">Uber, Alphabet, and others believe they will be</a><span>, Intel wants to sell the bits that make it happen.</span></p><p><span>Just as PCs were once all adorned with the reassuring "Intel Inside" stickers, the chipmaker is betting that it can gain a similar foothold inside another product that sells tens of millions of units ever year.</span></p><p>"It's important now, because if you take a look at what you're doing, talking about car models in 2020, 2021, and so we need to get in there, we need to get this platform developers, brought to them, and have that confidence so that we can really influence the real start of autonomous driving in that time frame," Intel CEO Brian Krzanich said on CNBC following the announcement of the deal.</p><p>Intel has a history of buying up companies to plug holes in its business: From 1997 to 2002, Intel went on a rampage, buying up around 40 companies both during and after the dot-com bubble. Even later on, Intel signed mega-deals like <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/intel-finishes-77-billion-mcafee-buy-2011-2">2010's purchase of security company McAfee for $7.68 billion</a>.</p><p>The problem is that while Intel should be applauded for trying to move its business into new areas, the company has a lousy track record when it comes to acquisitions. That could be part of the reason why Intel stock is down almost 2% at the time of writing, below the market.</p><h2>A series of unfortunate events</h2><p>Intel's dotcom shopping spree was kind of a fiasco, with the company spending billions on companies like Wind River and Dialogic trying to break into the smartphone market. But Intel struggled to gain a foothold in the early market, and ended up taking a $600 million writeoff in its wireless business - and <a href="http://www.intel.com/pressroom/archive/releases/2006/20060627corp.htm">ended up selling much of its mobile business to Marvell</a> for the same amount in 2006.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>In 2010, <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/us-infineon-intel-idUSTRE67Q3J820100830">Intel bought the wireless business unit from Infineon</a>, which manufactured processors in the first several iPhone models, for $1.4 billion, in a move that was supposed to finally give the company a major play in smartphones. Not long after, Apple switched to chips from competitor Qualcomm, raining on Intel's parade. It was only last year that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/intel-could-power-over-50-of-apple-iphone-7s-and-add-15-billion-in-revenue-2016-7">reports held that Apple was turning to Intel for wireless modem hardware for new iPhones</a>.</p><p>And some of its acquisitions were just plain weird, like that McAfee acquisition, which never really seemed to fit into the company's core processor business. I<span>t basically cut the value of the company by nearly half over the course of six years, culminating that Intel<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/intel-spins-off-mcafee-2016-9"> announced it was spinning off a majority stake of McAfee in a $4.2 billion deal</a>.</span></p><h2><span>The bull case</span></h2><p><span>On CNBC this morning, Krzanich made the argument that Mobileye will be different, saying that he needs to convince investors that Intel's play here is around the "visual data" that self-driving cars can collect. </span></p><p><span>"The next data revolution will be visual data. Those cars see the world. And so as we're looking for things, as visual data becomes important, that is a new whole business and new whole regime of data management that is going to become available," Krzanich said.</span></p><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p><span>And tactically, Krzanich claims that he has a solid track record of rehabilitating Intel's troubled acquisitions, and led McAfee Intel Security to profitability ahead of the spinoff. He says that he's going to repeat the playbook there of having leadership that reports directly to him, with CEO Ziv Aviram staying in command of Mobileye.</span></p><p><span>While Mobileye is certainly Intel's biggest investment in diversifying its business past the PC, it's not alone. This is why Intel plunked down $15 billion for a car tech company - and why it should make investors nervous

Times are changing.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Technology companies are evolving at an incredible rate - and Wall Street investment banks are having to adapt to keep up with them.</p><p>Consumer technology companies can hit the 100 million user mark - an important milestone - in no time at all. Enterprise companies are getting hold of exciting new technology at earlier stages in their development too.</p><p><span>"Technology companies are gaining scale and value much more rapidly and at earlier stages in their lifetimes, so to speak, than ever before," Dan Dees, who is Goldman Sachs' global head of tech, media, and telecom banking, told Business Insider. </span></p><p>That is changing what it means to be a "tech banker."</p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The first interaction with a company could be advising on an early fundraising round, rather than an IPO. A company could need help going global or in branding as a private player long before it is interested in a sale. </span></p><p>It's a stark contrast from how things used to be. Take Goldman's work on the Microsoft IPO back in 1986. Goldman initially invested with the Jerusalem-based driving assistant seven years prior to the IPO, according to Dees. Then the bank made a follow-on investment two years later, and worked on a private placement in 2013.</p><p>By July 2014, Mobileye was worth $5 billion and Goldman was able to help take it public.</p><h2>Investing early</h2><p style="text-align: left;">Credit Suisse's global co-head of tech, media, and telecom banking, David Wah, agreed that the time it takes to reach 100 million users - an important milestone - has been accelerating for many tech companies.</p><p style="text-align: left;">He said the past three years are almost parallel to Moore's Law in terms of how quickly companies are getting there.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="http://www.gettyimages.com/detail/news-photo/founder-and-executive-chairman-of-alibaba-group-jack-ma-news-photo/455720268">Andrew Burton/Getty Images</a></span></p><p class="caption">Alibaba founder Jack Ma on the day of the IPO. And that changes the companies' relationship with Wall Street. </p><p>Wah compared tech companies like Google and Amazon - which have both gained most of their value since going public a decade or so ago - with companies like Alibaba, which came public at around $200 billion, having already created most of its value before its IPO.</p><p>The early value creation is a major reason why so much capital is flowing into tech startups in their early stages.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_left"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Credit Suisse</span></p><p class="caption">David Wah, Credit Suisse's global co-head of TMT banking, said value creation is taking place for many tech companies before they go public.</p></div><p></p></div></div>"I think we saw this coming four or five years ago," Wah told Business Insider, "when some institutional investors were reaching out to us and they were talking about how they're creating a pre-public investing capability."</p><p>As early as 2010, companies like Fidelity, T. Rowe Price, and BlackRock started calling banks like Credit Suisse and asking how to develop an investing network, Wah said. "That started the crossover investing platform."</p><h2>IPO freeze</h2><p>Initial public offering activity, meanwhile, has dropped off.<strong> </strong>The value of IPO activity to date this year is about $32.72 billion, compared with $80.86 billion in the same period last year, according to Bloomberg. Even if you subtract last year's Alibaba megadeal, the gap is still huge.</p><p>The reason, according to Goldman's Dees, is simple.</p><p>"It's been facilitated by the fact they can raise large amounts of money at reasonable valuations which has made it attractive to stay private longer," he said.</p><p>"The public markets are oftentimes less forgiving of trying to find your way and optimizing your model."</p><p>That isn't to say big-ticket IPOs in the tech sector are over.
