Thanks to social media and digital technologies, we now may have a ‘problem of plenty’. With NFTs, blockchain-based digital collectibles, fans now have access to digital avatars of Bollywood celebrities and can even attend their film premieres. Last year, many Indian celebrities launched their NFTs or Non-Fungible-Tokens, a unique way of selling their art online. It could be a poem, a song, a movie dialogue or even a movie premiere. However, NFTs have seen a steep drop in interest <a href="https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?q=NFTs">since last year</a>. NFT transaction activity <a href="https://go.chainalysis.com/rs/503-FAP-074/images/state-of-web3.pdf">crashed</a> by three-quarters to less than $1 billion in March from $3.9 billion in February. How have Bollywood NFTs fared after this crash? Fiat vs crypto NFTs can be bought either with fiat money – regular money such as INR – or with cryptocurrency. NFTs that were bought using fiat money have been less affected by the market crash. For instance, Guardian Link, a platform which manages Amitabh Bachchan’s <keyword id="11050714" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nft-platform" source="Orion">NFT platform</keyword> BeyondLife.Club was one of the first to offer NFTs in fiat money. Amitabh NFTs were sold for $1 million in 2021. “Over 12,000 NFTs were sold within 45 seconds of going live. For NFTs that were bought via digital currencies, the story gets a little complicated. Utility &amp; engagement drive NFT value How well NFTs have fared is dependent on multiple factors – utility of NFTs, star power, star engagement and credibility of the platform. If the NFTs do not provide lasting use cases for customers, they are unlikely to be popular. ‘83’ – a film that starred Ranveer Singh – in January sold all its digital collectibles within an hour of launch on ‘Social Swag,’ a platform for customers to learn directly from celebrities and not an NFT platform. Actor Salman Khan released ‘Chill Bull NFT collection’ in July – based on his 2019 movie ‘Dabbang 3’ – through <a href="https://www.bollycoin.com">Bollycoin</a>, the star’s NFT platform. However the utilities of these NFTs remain nil with no reference to them on the official <a href="https://market.bollycoin.com/assets/0xF298fEA19b400F20c61194e95aEB2421B3C12796/102">website</a>. Business Insider had not heard back from Bollycoin at the time of publishing. “Art should always be backed by lasting utility. Often celebrities launch their NFTs and go radio silent. But if an NFT buyer wants to sell the NFT of a Bollywood digital avatar, would they be able to do so? They should have an active NFT community,” said Sandesh Suvarna, vice president, WazirX NFT marketplace. Vishal Malhotra, creator of Asia’s first NFT-funded film ‘Ilm,’ meaning knowledge; and also the first actor to launch his NFT in India, did just that. “Ilm-the world’s first NFT-funded film has been certified by the Censor Board of India. Even during the bear market, over 50% of the film NFT passes have been sold. The bear market allows NFTs to go mainstream, bringing down their price. A Sholay film NFT has classic value for a Bollywood fan and will always have incremental resale value,” Malhotra said. Fans who own the ‘Ilm’ NFT passes will have a lifetime access for all his future film premieres, Malhotra added. Of blue chips &amp; star power The ‘Blue Chip NFTs’ – those NFTs that have the backing of big names, venture capitalists and big organizations – would still make for good buys is the general consensus. <a href="https://www.rario.com">Rario</a>, a blue chip NFT platform has over 20,000 users worldwide. They have partnered with cricketers like Rishabh Pant, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Dinesh Karthik, and are backed by top global cricket leagues. “Esports is growing rapidly. Cricket fans want to be associated with their favourite players. At Rario, you can gain access to their tournaments, merchandise and even host your own virtual tournaments. We have partnered with world’s cricket mega celebrities,” said Ankit Wadhwa, CEO of Rario. The star power of a mega celebrity like Amitabh Bachchan, coupled with the backing of a well-known decentralised exchange like Guardian Link seems to be the winning combination for owning a lucrative NFT. Celebrity engagement One of the most important factors that determine the value and demand of celebrity NFTs is the extent of engagement by the celebrity. Dhruv Saxena, chief strategy officer of Singapore-based NFT celebrity platform <a href="https://www.fantico.io">Fantico</a>, deals with NFTs of Indian movie stars such as Kamal Hassan, Madhavan, and lyricist Javed Akhtar. He believes investor overlap between crypto and NFTs does exist, hence buyers are more cautious. “This is very typical after any ‘bull run’ days. Value can only be created by creators or their fans. While fans will continue to like whatever it is they do, creators (artists, influencers, actors, musicians, or athletes) will use this new medium to create more supply,” added Saxena.

Hence, it is little wonder when the author himself made an appearance at two events in India earlier this month, the audience was spellbound. 
 As one journalist said, not even Indian megastar of all times, <keyword id="410704" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amitabh-Bacchan">Amitabh Bacchan</keyword> had received such a response from the participants at his event held recently. And, more complementary applauses followed. 
 
Dan Brown’s last India visit was almost when he was a teenager who was stepping out of his teens. By his own admission, Brown was barely 18 when he visited India last and was mesmerised by the coexistence of culture, religion and modernity all under one roof in the country. 
 
Now, when he returned after good three decades and with several titles to his credit, the author was further fascinated by the Indian psyche. He spoke in New Delhi and Mumbai on Nov 10 and 12 respectively, drawing crowds from varied spectrum of his readership. 
 
A brilliant speaker of his times, Dan Brown has always been intrigued by Science and religion. Both, he says, are trying to say the same thing, using different tools. 
 
Whether it is his ‘Angels and demons’ or ‘the lost symbol’ or the ‘inferno’ or the most famous of all his works, ‘The Da Vinci Code’ –all have become a topic of discussion among scientists, scholars and commoners. 
 
Because his stories are not just about employing a technique to keep the reader engaged, they are also fierce debates between the value systems and beliefs of the society – stemming from religion that has had a long history and enjoys unquestionable faith; and science which is open to scrutiny. 
 
Unquestionably one of the most successful writers of his time, which has been proven time and again, Dan Brown received a hero’s welcome when he walked the stage at Siri Fort in Delhi. The most predictable question popped up:would he be penning a story or a novel with India as central theme? 
 
In a rather quintessential ‘Dan Brown style’ of response, he said he ‘possibly’ could consider it. And, no, he was never averse to an idea like that! 
 
The man who had a fair share of a discourse on Noah’s Ark and the Big Bang, later grew up to wonder who Adam and Eve were. Did they ever exist? Things were tough to reconcile for a teenager that he was growing up to be, who often escaped into imaginary reality of both science and religion, instead of ‘normal’ worries such as girls and dating. 
 
During the course of his lecture, he had only one core thing to say. Whether it is science or religion, both focus on only one thing. Creation is better than destruction; and similarly, love is better than hate. 
 
The controversy surrounding his work The Da Vinci Code had surprised him, if not amused him. The backlash made him introspect even further, much to the effect of getting self-deprecating, a trait which the audience came to love thoroughly in him. 
 
The visit, he admitted later, was an eye opener in many ways. He went to visit churches in Delhi, which came across as a very interesting city for him. It was tangible that India held a lot of promises for the future. The country had shown enormous thirst for knowledge and learning through various cultures. 
 
This son of mathematics teacher and a music teacher, Dan Brown had shown his interest in codes right through his childhood days. No wonder, a complex country like India, which has varied degrees of knowledge present through its scriptures, leave him all fascinated and eager. 
 
His new found love on the trip was Indian cuisine. He fell in love with the paneer, while he tasted all kinds of Indian foods he could ever get to tasting during his India visit. 
 
While the world sees the architecture part at the old minars and pillars of historical importance, Dan Brown, very true to his character, saw the passion of geometry in those monuments. The Minars and domes to him indicated the love Indians nursed for this branch of mathematics, which is different from what he saw in, say, Arabic countries. 
 
Indians’ ability to speak English amazed him. So, it was little wonder that the author, whose works have been translated into 52 languages worldwide, was so popular in a land that was pretty far from where he worked. 
 After all this, did he wish to be <keyword id="244061" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Robert-Langdon">Robert Langdon</keyword>, a character he created in The Da Vinci Code? Nope, he wouldn’t want to trade his life for anything. He said: “I wish I could be Langdon. But no! He (Langdon) is braver and more intelligent”. 
 
Now, it is time we asked Langdon if he ever wanted to be Brown. The answer might arrive in a code!

India Holds Out Both Science And Religion For Dan Brown

After the much discussed <keyword id="2880611" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maggi-controversy">Maggi controversy</keyword>, celebs who endorsed the merchandise in the past are quizzed. A district court in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur has directed the cops to file a complaint against <keyword id="2878870" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maggi-brand-ambassadors">Maggi brand ambassadors</keyword> counting <keyword id="6357912" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="amitabh-bachchan">Amitabh Bachchan</keyword>, Madhuri Dixit and <keyword id="8145" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Preity-zinta">Preity Zinta</keyword>. 
 
Celebrities refused to make any comment on the matter after ET tried to reach out to them just after the news came out. In fact, what we heard those saying is that they have become a soft target in a fiasco.

Not just this, but Big B also declined the reports saying "I have not received any notice yet. So I cannot make any comment. If it (notice) is received, my lawyers shall attend to it. It would be inappropriate to comment on a matter that is subjudice." 
 "It's sad and true that known faces get targeted for the wrong reasons and agendas just to seek attention. It is a completely irrelevant fact, it is just that everyone feels important by association with the stars," he added.

Brokerages lauded the performance of the company ⁠— which is the world’s largest Pick `n` Carry Hydraulic Mobile Crane manufacturer⁠— and raised the estimates for future earnings growth. The stock has doubled in the last three years but it is still 20% below the peak it hit in 2018. This was before Rajan Nanda ⁠— the company’s Chairman for nearly two long and strenuous decades⁠— passed away. This, despite the company clocking a spectacular 40% growth in profit in the last financial year ending March 2019.

 But by the time Nikhil took over as the chairman, he was left with mounds of debt, now, four struggling businesses, and the trust he lost with banks. So much so that bankers refused to pay attention to his presentation. And, one of them even offered to “to cut him a cheque to walk out gracefully”.  It was time for Nikhil to take drastic action - the first was the sale of telecom, IT and hospital businesses. But the bigger problem was lack of communication between businesses and rampant financial indiscipline. The last six years Nikhil also helped set-up audit committees across businesses that improved scrutiny which gave the management a better picture of businesses. Yet, the much needed stability was yet to come in as a flurry of CFOs came and left the company. That is when he decided to promote in-house talent and brought Rohtash Mal as the ED and CEO, who was then heading the tractor business. Mal had to deal with daily walk-ins of supplier complaints, dealers and bankers and they included cases of cheque bouncing. The employees were scared and official politics had taken a vicious turn. And Mal was unearthing shocking discoveries like empty liquor bottles on the shop floor. The very next day, he handed a senior executive in the manufacturing department two letters - an unsigned resignation letter and a termination letter. Nikhil did not intervene with his decision. Slowly but steadily Nikhil regained control over the financial and the management, by screwing the cap on costs; convincing bankers to extend credit lines and more importantly refusing the airbrushed versions presented of the businesses. Today, apart from bankers, brokerages too put their trust into the company in spite of the effects of the slowdown eating into the business. Cut to 2020 In the last few years, the company’s market worth has gone from ₹6,000 crore to ₹10,000 crore. Nearly 30% of the jump has come in 2020 itself as investors saw structural changes take effect in the company’s financial performance. “Escorts’ third quarter performance is a reflection of stability in volumes, benefit of mix improvement and cost savings, all of which should sustain in the coming quarters. According to management, FY21 outlook has turned positive with estimated low single-digit growth,” said a research report by Motilal Oswal adding that the stock may gain as much as another 9% in the next 12 months. <ul><li>Tokenisation is nothing but giving your sensitive information a secret identity. </li><li>When you <keyword id="14220192" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tokenise" source="Orion">tokenise</keyword> something, like a debit or <keyword id="6368202" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="credit-card" source="Orion">credit card</keyword>, you replace the actual details with a unique digital token. </li><li>To make it more convenient to the customers, <keyword id="30067" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rbi" source="Orion">RBI</keyword> has recently announced card-on-file tokenisation or CoF.</li></ul>Many of us would have seen Amitabh Bacchan on television telling us that by tokenising our cards we can make our online transactions more secure and alo get freed from the hassle of entering our card details every time we make a purchase. In fact, many websites will ask you to save your card details which you may not be comfortable with. Tokenisaiton is the answer. “Tokenisation simply refers to the replacement of actual card details with an alternate code called the 'token'. It is used for recurring payments or in cases where merchants have stored the card details for providing faster checkout experience,” says Rahul Jain, CFO, NTT DATA Payment Services India. RBI’s initiative on tokenisation is targeted towards the disablement of card storage at the payment service providers' and merchants' end to ensure better security. “Simply put, tokenisation is nothing but giving your sensitive information a secret identity. When you tokenise something, like a debit or credit card, you replace the actual details with a unique digital token, which is further used while making online transactions, making it secure,” says Gaurav Chopra, founder and CEO of IndiaLends, a digital lending marketplace. Steps to tokenise your card We will look at the steps to tokenise your card. <ol><li>To purchase any products or services and to initiate a transaction, a customer visits e-commerce or a merchant's website. Then select the preferred card options as the payment method and enter all the card details</li><li>In case the website wants the customer to store the card details for a faster checkout experience, there will be an option 'secure your card as per RBI guidelines'. A customer must opt for this option to securely generate a token and have it stored as per RBI guidelines</li><li>To complete the transaction, a customer will receive a one-time password (OTP) on the mobile device or email from the card issuer company.</li><li>Once the OTP is entered on the bank page, the card details are sent for token generation as well as transaction authorization</li><li>Generated token is sent back to the merchant, who then stores the token against the customer identification data eg; mobile number or email address</li><li>When a customer visits the same e-commerce or merchant website, the last four digits of the saved card are shown which helps them to recognize during the transaction. This means that a customer’s card has been tokenised.</li><li>A new token is generated for every merchant website where the card details are required to be stored.The token is now ready for use in subsequent recurring or express checkout payment transactions by consumers on the merchant platform. </li></ol>Source: NTT DATA Payment Services India When you tokemise your card, your card information is not stored by the merchant website. “The genuine payment details of the customer are securely stored by their bank in a protected token vault. Upon receiving the token from the credit card issuer and confirming its match with the account number, the bank verifies the transaction,” says Akash Sinha, CEO and co-founder, Cashfree Payments, a payments and banking platform. Card on file tokenisation “Meanwhile, to make it more convenient to the customers, RBI has recently announced that card-on-file tokenisation (CoF) can now be generated directly at the issuer bank level,” says Jain. This will allow users to generate tokens through their bank’s app or website. Currently, it is not mandatory to tokenise the cards. A customer can choose whether to or not to tokenise his/her card. A customer can continue to transact as before by entering card details manually at the time of initiating the transaction if he/she does not wish to create a token.

This six-year-old business that started in a 200 square feet kitchen in Mumbai is run by 47-year-old Geeta Patil with two 21-year-old partners – her son Vinit Patil, and his friend Darshil Savla. While Geeta Patil, who runs the eponymous business, has been making and selling snacks ever since her husband lost his job in 2016, it’s the younger partners who gave it a digital spin. Vineet Patil and Savla are college dropouts, who at one point, set up and ran a small IT services business. Her chaklis, modaks, chivdas, puran poli, and even healthy snacks like makhanas which are now well-packaged well, branded, and available online – generated sales to the tune of ₹1 crore in the first five months of FY23 – as of August 2022 when the Shark Tank episodes were recorded. They hope to end the financial year with sales to the tune of ₹3 crore. “They are the emerging faces of New India. Soon after, Aman Gupta, the co-founder of boAt, trumped it by doubling his offer — ₹40 lakh for 5% equity, valuing it at ₹8 crore. Lenskart’s co-founder Peyush Bansal and Shaadi.com’s founder Anupam Mittal then made an offer that Kaki couldn’t refuse — ₹40 lakh for 4% equity that valued it at ₹10 crore. She had been making and selling food out of passion before 2016. The first order came from a family in Khar. The best part is that even today, we get orders from them regularly,” shared Geeta with The Better India. Slowly, she started getting orders from offices too. However, it was the pandemic that pushed her to prepare and sell dry snacks too. “We started by serving breakfast at the BMC office. Impressed by our cooking, the employees got a letter from the ward office, allowing us to serve them at the office. However, when the lockdown started, the problems started again. That’s when I started with snacks like chakli, chivda, etc,” said Patil on the show. To cater to the growing business, the team took up a 1,200 sq ft space in Santacruz. They play the role of a couple too where Alia is seen commenting on Ranbir’s clothing style.
