The pleas came up for hearing on Wednesday before a division bench of Justices Revati Mohite Dere and Prithviraj Chavan. The court issued notice to the <keyword id="19895344" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Enforcement-Directorate" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Enforcement Directorate" meta.hostid="153" meta.entityid="Enforcement Directorate">Enforcement Directorate</keyword> (ED) and posted the matter for hearing on Thursday. Their petitions challenge ED notices dated September 27 issued to Shetty and Kundra directing them to evict their residential premises here and a farmhouse in Pune within ten days in connection with a money-laundering case linked to an alleged <keyword id="23486542" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bitcoin-fraud" source="keywords">Bitcoin fraud</keyword>. The couple's advocate Prashant Patil said that Shetty and Kundra received the <keyword id="20675198" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="eviction-notices" source="keywords">eviction notices</keyword> only on October 3. He termed the notices arbitrary and illegal and sought them to be quashed. According to the pleas, there is no grave urgency for the petitioners to vacate their premises and that the issuance of such eviction notices was uncalled for. "The petitioners are also seeking relief on humanitarian grounds as the premise in question is their residential premise in which they have been staying with their family of six members for almost two decades," the petitions said. The pleas also sought HC to stay the effect of the eviction notices. As per the pleas, the ED had in 2018 lodged a complaint against one <keyword id="21346793" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="amit-bhardwaj" source="keywords">Amit Bhardwaj</keyword> and others for an alleged Bitcoin fraud and on charges of <keyword id="19899231" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="money-laundering" source="keywords">money laundering</keyword>. Both Shetty and her husband have not been named as accused in the case. The ED, during its probe, had summoned Kundra for questioning on several occasions. Kundra had appeared before the agency after each summons, the pleas said. In April 2024, Shetty and Kundra received a notice based on an order passed by the ED provisionally attaching their assets including their residential premise in Juhu that had been purchased by Kundra's father in 2009. Both Shetty and Kundra submitted their response to the notice. "However, in contravention to the provisions of law, the adjudicating authority confirmed the provisional attachment order on September 18, 2024. This order clearly states that the attachment is confirmed only till the conclusion of trial and is subject to its outcome," the pleas said. "The petitioners (Shetty and Kundra) on October 3 received two notices dated September 27, 2024, directing them to vacate their residential premises and the farmhouse," the petitions said. The petitions said no eviction order/notice can be issued prior to conviction. The pleas added that their residential premise has no connection with the scheduled offence or any proceeds of crime. The petitions further claimed that Kundra had absolutely no connection with the alleged fraud.

The man responsible for <keyword id="6408230" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="GBMiners">GBMiners</keyword>, the venture which brought about <keyword id="6354947" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="bitcoin">bitcoin</keyword> mining to India, has apparently been arrested for scamming investors out of ₹2,000 crores. That too, within Maharashtra alone. Amit <keyword id="3039" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bhardwaj">Bhardwaj</keyword>, one of the biggest names in the digital currency diaspora, was brought into the country after being in hiding for over a year. His brother, Vivek Bharadwaj was also arrested. This is the first enforcement case investigation report (ECIR) to submitted in India under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in Mumbai. Others included in the ECIR are Ajay Bhardwaj, Rupesh Singh, Hemant Chauhan, Hemant Suryavanshi and, Kaka Ravde. And that’s not even the whole list. Action was taken jointly by the <keyword id="6354335" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="reserve-bank-of-india">Reserve Bank of India</keyword> (RBI), the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Cybercrime Cell of Pune Police. It’s surprising that the case came to light in the first place, since most the investors were reluctant to come forward, as their investments fell outside the realm for what would strictly be considered to be ‘legal’. In fact, it was Parvendra Singh, a businessman from Nanded, who first filed a complaint and came forward to address the issue. Bhardwaj allegedly used his position as a cryptocurrency entrepreneur to cheat investors out of money using Bitcoin-based Ponzi schemes. Though the figure stated for Maharashtra is ₹2,000 crores, officials told <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/india/story/investigators-get-tough-on-bitcoins-ed-registers-its-first-ecir-1205877-2018-04-06">India Today</a> that the scam could actually be anywhere between ₹5,000 crores and ₹13,000 crores. Using his connections in Bollywood, Bhardwaj got well known faces like Shilpa Shetty, Neha Dhupia and Huma Qureshi to endorse his book, Cryptocurrency for Beginners. Building his reputation from that, he continued to woo middle-class investors into investing using a multi-level marketing (MLM) model. His first foray into the world of bitcoin included launching HighKart, the first bitcoin based online retailer in India. Other than GBMiners, his ventures also include GainBitcoin, MCAP and GB21.

Indian Bitcoin guru arrested for ₹2000 crore ponzi scheme

The <keyword id="6357808" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="enforcement-directorate" source="Orion">Enforcement Directorate</keyword> (ED) has attached immovable and movable properties worth Rs 97.79 crore belonging to Ripu Sudan Kundra aka <keyword id="18641" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="raj-kundra" source="Orion">Raj Kundra</keyword>, businessman, and husband of Bollywood actor <keyword id="6358615" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="shilpa-shetty" source="Orion">Shilpa Shetty</keyword>, under the provisions of Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002. The attached properties include a residential flat in Juhu, which is in the name of Shilpa Shetty, another residential bungalow in Pune and equity shares in Raj Kundra's name. The financial probe agency had initiated an investigation based on multiple FIRs registered by Maharashtra Police and Delhi Police against Variable Tech Pte Ltd, Late Amit Bhardwaj, Ajay Bhardwaj, Vivek Bhardwaj, Simpy Bhardwaj, Mahender Bhardwaj and a number of MLM agents. It has been alleged that they had collected huge amounts of funds in the form of <keyword id="6395759" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bitcoins" source="Orion">Bitcoins</keyword> (worth Rs 6,600 crore in 2017 itself) from the public with false promises of a 10 per cent per month return in the form of Bitcoins. The collected Bitcoins were supposed to be utilised for Bitcoin mining, and investors were to get huge returns in Crypto assets. "But the promoters cheated the investors and have been concealing the ill-gotten Bitcoins in obscure online wallets. The probe also revealed that Raj Kundra received 285 Bitcoins from the mastermind and promoter of Gain Bitcoin Ponzi Scam, Amit Bhardwaj, for setting up a Bitcoin mining farm in Ukraine," ED said in a statement issued on Thursday. The said Bitcoins were sourced out of proceeds of crime collected by Amit Bhardwaj from gullible investors. "Since the deal didn't materialise, Kundra is still in possession and enjoyment of 285 Bitcoins which are presently valued at more than Rs. 150 Crore," said the ED official. During the investigation, multiple search operations were carried out in this case and three persons were arrested. "Simpy Bhardwaj was arrested on December 17, 2023, Nitin Gaur on December 29, 2023, and Nikhil Mahajan on January 16, 2023. All of them are presently in judicial custody as of date," said the official. However, the main accused Ajay Bhardwaj and Mahendra Bhardwaj are still absconding. Earlier, ED had attached properties worth Rs 69 crore. The Prosecution Complaint in this was filed on June 11, 2019, and the Supplementary Prosecution Complaint on February 14, 2024. "The Special PMLA court has taken cognizance of the same. Further investigation is under progress," the official added.

The under-grads who built a business of plug-and-fly drones

New Delhi, Jun 11 () Using a computer model, scientists at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) - Bombay have shown that a hotter and drier weather is linked to lower survival chances of the novel coronavirus on surfaces, a finding that may lead to better sanitisation guidelines for public spaces across the world. The study, published in the journal Physics of Fluids, assessed how long the novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, remains viable for infection after someone with COVID-19 coughs or sneezes. In order to calculate this, the researchers, including Rajneesh Bhardwaj and Amit Agarwal from IIT-Bombay, examined the drying time of respiratory droplets from infected subjects on various surfaces in six cities around the world, including New York and Singapore. These droplets, which are about the size of the width of a single human hair, are expelled from the mouth or nose when a person with COVID-19 coughs, sneezes, or even speaks moistly, the study noted. Once the droplets carrying the virus evaporate, the scientists said the residual virus becomes inactive, so the survival and transmission of COVID-19 are directly impacted by how long the droplets remain intact. Based on their analysis, the researchers said the growth rate of COVID-19 is weakly linked to the outdoor weather, adding that the chances of the survival of the virus "increases roughly by five times under a humid condition as compared to a dry condition." In the study, the scientists used a mathematical model to assess the drying time for the droplets under different conditions and showed that ambient temperature, the type of surface, and humidity play critical roles. Citing an example, they said higher ambient temperature helped to dry out the droplet faster, and drastically reduced the chances of virus survival. The researchers added that in places with greater humidity, the droplet stayed on surfaces longer, and the virus survival chances improved. They also determined the droplet drying time in different outdoor weather conditions and examined if this data connected to the growth rate of the COVID-19 pandemic in six cities across the world -- New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, Sydney, and Singapore. When the scientists plotted the growth rate of COVID-19 patients in these places with the drying time of a typical droplet, they found that in the cities with a larger growth rate of the pandemic, the drying time was longer. "In a way, that could explain a slow or fast growth of the infection in a particular city. This may not be the sole factor, but definitely, the outdoor weather matters in the growth rate of the infection," said Rajneesh Bhardwaj, one of the co-authors of the study. "Understanding virus survival in a drying droplet could be helpful for other transmissible diseases that spread through respiratory droplets, such as influenza A," said Amit Agrawal, another author of the study. Citing the limitations of the study, the scientists said they assumed air to be stationary in their model along with the consideration that the evaporation time is expected to reduce in the presence of air currents. "The value of the predicted evaporation times is on the conservative side, and the actual evaporation time will be smaller than that obtained here," the researchers noted in the study. Despite these drawbacks in the model, they believe that surfaces like smartphone screens, cotton, and wood, should be cleaned more often than glass and steel surfaces since the latter are relatively hydrophilic, and the droplets evaporate faster on these materials. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Droplets containing the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-live-updates-latest-news">coronavirus</a> can survive for a time <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-long-can-coronavirus-live-on-surfaces-how-to-disinfect-2020-3">on surfaces</a> before drying out.</li><li>A new study found that higher temperatures and lower humidity shorten the lifespans of <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword> droplets on surfaces.</li><li>The research also showed that in cities where weather made the droplets' drying time longer, coronavirus infection rates rose faster.</li><li>This could in part explain why New York City was hit harder by the pandemic in March compared to, say, Singapore. </li></ul>A city's weather could be linked to how hard it got hit by the coronavirus.According to <a href="https://aip.scitation.org/doi/10.1063/5.0012009.">a study</a> published Tuesday, the amount of time coronavirus-laden droplets last on surfaces depends on the surrounding temperature and humidity, as well as type of surface they settle on.The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-live-updates-latest-news">virus</a> typically spreads via <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/about/transmission.html">droplets</a> when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks loudly. Because some of those microscopic droplets settle on surfaces, a team of researchers decided to measure how long it took the droplets to dry out, thereby killing the virus inside. The longer that process takes, the more likely it is that the droplets could infect someone new.The scientists found that higher temperatures and lower humidity dry out droplets faster — which could in part explain why the coronavirus took hold in some geographic areas more than others.The researchers compared droplets' average drying time in six cities with differing temperatures and humidity levels. Their results showed that "a longer drying time correlated with a larger growth rate of the pandemic," according to Raneesh Bhardwaj, one of the study co-authors."Certain outdoor weather is something that matters in the growth of infections," he told Business Insider.<div type="image" title="New York Coronavirus" height="1316" width="2000" msid="76287479" hostid="261"></div><h2>Low temperatures and high humidity help the virus survive</h2>For their investigation, the researchers looked at the most common size of droplet that people with <keyword id="8763838" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="covid-19">COVID-19</keyword> spew out: about 5 nanoliters, or "the width of a human hair," Bhardwaj said.They did not look at the lifespan of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-coronavirus-travel-through-air-droplets-aerosols-2020-3">aerosols</a>, which are clouds of even tinier viral particles.Once droplets evaporate, the coronavirus that's left behind quickly dies. So the chances of transmission depend on the droplets' lifespan.The study authors compared drying time in two different temperatures: 25 degrees Celsius (77 degrees Fahrenheit) and 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit), both with 50% humidity. That 15-degree increase halved the time it took droplets to evaporate, they found.They also observed that an increase in relative humidity from 10% to 90% increased the evaporation time of a droplet almost seven-fold (with a steady temperature of 25 degrees Celsius).<div type="image" title="queens new york coronavirus" height="1000" width="1500" msid="76287483" hostid="261"></div><a href="https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanmic/article/PIIS2666-5247(20)30003-3/fulltext">An April study</a> found a similar link between the virus' lifespan and the surrounding temperature. At 4 degrees Celsius (39 degrees Fahrenheit), the virus lasted up to two weeks in a test tube. When the temperature was turned up to 37 degrees Celsius (99 degrees Fahrenheit), that lifespan dropped to one day.<h2>Longer drying times are linked to quicker outbreak growth </h2>To investigate whether outdoor weather conditions were connected to the severity of outbreaks in different cities, the researchers compared the growth of infections in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, Sydney, and Singapore between March 1 and April 10. The results showed a correlation between the average drying time of a droplet in those cities (based on humidity and temperatures during that time period) and the growth rate of the local outbreak."If the drying time is less, the growth rate of infection in that city is expected to be less," Amit Agrawal, another co-author of the study, told Business Insider.New York City, for example, had a growth rate of new infections per day that was 35 times higher than Singapore's. On average, the drying time for coronavirus droplets in New York was close to a minute — nearly double the drying time in Singapore."While the humidity is comparable between the two cities, New York was cold compared to Singapore when the pandemic started," Bhardwaj said.Other factors could have influenced the differing severity of those cities' outbreaks, however. Singapore, a small island nation, was quicker than New York (and the rest of the US) to implement widespread coronavirus testing and contact tracing, as well as social distancing measures. <div type="image" title="singapore coronavirus" height="1333" width="2000" msid="76287487" hostid="261"></div>The researchers suggest that their research could provide clues about which countries and geographic areas might experience a more severe second wave this summer and fall."Infection rates in the Northern Hemisphere are decreasing with the warmer and drier summer, but the monsoon season is coming to southeast Asia, and bringing with it higher humidity and a higher growth rate," Bhardwaj said.<h2>The coronavirus' lifespan on surfaces</h2>A person can get the coronavirus if they touch a surface or object that has virus-laden droplets on it and then touch their mouth, nose, or eyes. When a droplet hits a hydrophilic surface, it spreads into a thin film, which then evaporates more quickly into the surrounding air.Wood, cotton cloth, and smartphone screens, by contrast, are hydrophobic — they stop liquid from spreading."If you put water on your phone screen, it becomes a blob. That blob will take longer to dry out than that water spread out over a larger area," Bhardwaj said.The researchers found that the evaporation time can increase by 60% for a hydrophobic surface compared to a hydrophilic one. That finding could indicate which surfaces should be cleaned most frequently, Agrawal said.

New Delhi, Jun 9 () A 59-year-old sub-inspector of Delhi Police died on Tuesday due to coronavirus, officials said. Earlier, one constables and two assistant sub-inspectors of Delhi police had died due to COVID-19. Another constable, who had underlying health conditions and had been on leave since November last year, also died last week. Police said his test for COVID-19 also came positive. The sub-inspector who died on Tuesday has been identified as Karambeer. He was posted in northeast district, they said. He was admitted with symptoms of COVID-19 on June 2 at Army Base Hospital here, a senior police officer said. "Police received information from Army Base Hospital that Karambeer, who was on ventilator support for the last five days, died on Tuesday morning," said Anil Mittal, Additional PRO (Delhi Police). "A member of our family, SI Karambeer made the greatest sacrifice in the fight against COVID. We pay our homage to this great warrior," the Delhi Police tweeted. He was a resident of Brijpuri in Gokalpuri and is survived by his wife, a daughter and a son, who works with the Indian Railways posted in Mumbai, police said. Around 500 personnel of the force have been infected with the virus so far. A total of 200 of them have recovered, according to Delhi Police. Police said the COVID-19 test report of a Delhi Police constable, Rahul (30),who died last week, had come positive. He had underlying health conditions and he breathed his last on Wednesday at Safdarjung Hospital. He was on a medical leave since November 2019 and was undergoing treatment for lung infection, police said. Earlier, three more Delhi Police personnel died due to COVID-19. A 31-year-old constable, Amit Kumar, posted at the Bharat Nagar police station had died on May 6, while two assistant sub inspectors -- Shesh Mani Pandey, 54, and Vikram, 52 succumbed to the disease in the last week of May while undergoing treatment at the Army Base Hospital here. Vikram was posted at the Sultanpuri police station in outer Delhi and was on highway patrol duty in the area since May 1. Pandey was ex-Army personnel and worked with the Finger Print Bureau (FPB) of the Crime Branch in central Delhi's Kamla Market area. Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Monika Bhardwaj, who had tested positive for coronavirus last month, joined office after recovering from the infection on Tuesday.
