<ul><li>Amazon recently acquired Perpule, a retail tech startup and reportedly paid $14.7 million for it.</li><li>The latest acquisition comes as Amazon gets ready to further go deep into India’s retail industry, where it is already fighting with Ambani’s Reliance.</li><li>Early this month, Amazon had made its first investment in an Indian consumer brand – MyGlamm.</li></ul>Amazon, which has already pumped in billions of dollars into India, is now turning towards the country’s <keyword id="6362513" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="startups">startups</keyword> as it accelerates the retail war against Asia’s richest man Mukesh Ambani. The US-based e-commerce titan recently acquired Perpule, a retail-tech startup and <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2021/03/30/amazon-acquires-indian-retail-startup-perpule/">reportedly</a> paid $14.7 million for it. Perpule, which was founded in 2016, claims to have built India's first self-checkout solution and then scaled that into an end to end billing platform called UltraPOS (POS stands for Point of Sale). This has been implemented by popular retail brands such as Big Bazaar, Shoppers Stop, Starbucks, HyperCity, Vishal MegaMart, among others. And it was this software that caught Amazon’s attention and the POS team is joining Amazon. “Perpule has built an innovative cloud-based POS offering that enables offline stores in India to better manage their inventory, checkout process, and overall customer experience. Amazon had earlier picked up a 49% stake in Kishore Biyani’s Future Group’s – Future Coupons for ₹1,431 crore. But when Future Retail, another Future Group company, got acquired by Reliance, it led to a long legal battle with Amazon. Jeff Bezos-led Amazon is actively looking at startups in India for acquisitions and investments, much like its rival Ambani’s Reliance Industries, which in the last year has gobbled up startups like Urban Ladder, Netmeds and many more. Earlier this month, Amazon had made its first investment in an Indian consumer brand – MyGlamm, which raised ₹175 crore from Amazon, Wipro Consumer and Ascent Capital. However, Amazon’s individual investment amount remains undisclosed. Amazon also counts investments in the likes of insurtech firm BankBazaar, home services startup HouseJoy among others. The e-commerce giant has also launched an early-stage accelerator programme Amazon Global Selling Propel (AGSP), where startups can pitch their businesses to VC firms like Sequoia Capital India and Fireside Ventures. The startups will also get a chance to win $50,000 in an equity-free grant from Amazon. Amazon is eyeing India's startups as it gears up for a fight with Asia's richest man in retail

<keyword id="6481662" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Jasper-Infotech">Jasper Infotech</keyword>, the company behind online marketplace <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword>, is soon going to in invest in <keyword id="2892247" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Zimmber">Zimmber</keyword>, the on-demand home services platform. 
 
As per reports, The New Delhi based company is expected to invest somewhere between Rs 40 to 50 crore in Rejuvenate Solutions, the Mumbai-based company that runs Zimmber. This figure is for 10% of Zimmber’s stake. 
 
After leading a $36 million (about Rs 240 crore) funding round in hyper-local delivery service PepperTap in September last year, this is Jasper's second investment in the on-demand services space. This again proves that Jasper is increasingly focusing on this fast-growing segment. 
 
However, this move can also be taken as an inspiration from rival firm Amazon, as it’s just been two months that Amazon led a Rs 150-crore funding round in home services startup Housejoy. 
 
"Zimmber is an attractive investment opportunity and we are in active discussion with multiple investors," Anubhab Goel, cofounder and chief executive officer of Zimmber, told ET while declining to comment further. 
 
Snapdeal is presently valued at about $5 billion, after raising $500 million from Foxconn, Alibaba Group and SoftBank in August last year and buying digital payments platform FreeCharge for $400-450 million in April last year. This was the largest buyout done in the Indian consumer internet sector.

 Downturn for the win Bajaj thinks this ‘downturn’ that the Indian start-up ecosystem is seeing is necessary, “All elements of this industry are amplified and disruptive; the entrepreneurs, the investors and even the media get carried away in the possibilities. For starters, <keyword id="4540939" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon-Pay-India">Amazon Pay India</keyword> is offering a 10% cash-back even on items returned. "Amazon is encouraging returns at sellers' cost and investment. Amazon should give equal incentive to the seller whose stock is being returned,” a spokesperson for the All India Online Vendors' Association (AIOVA) told ET. Amazon Pay India wants to have a share of the Indian digital wallet market and is offering cash-backs for users. For instance, a first-time user shopping for more than Rs 700 gets Rs 100 cashback as Amazon Pay balance. Sriram Jagannathan, Vice President Payments, <keyword id="6354743" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon-India">Amazon India</keyword>, told ET, “Our aim is to improve the digital payment experiences for customers buying on our marketplace...We provide offers to customers to try this experience.” The Amazon Pay offers are applicable not only for transactions on Amazon's own platform, but also on third-party Web sites such as abhibus. com. It also has tie-ups with vendors such as Café Coffee Day, Amar Chitra Katha, Innerchef, Fasoos, and Housejoy.

Here’s how Amazon Pay is wooing its Indian customers

With Rs 250 crores waiting to be invested, <keyword id="6381424" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Quikr">Quikr</keyword> is surely taking the stakes higher in India's home services market. The Bengaluru-based mobile and online classifieds company has plans in place, to become the largest player in the space which has competitors like against Amazon-backed Housejoy, UrbanClap and Sulekha. 
 
The money would be spent on product development, including technology and building in-house supply. Not to forget, marketing campaigns and strategic investments in start-ups are also in the pipeline. 
 
"We have grown this business organically till now as we already have a lot of transacting users, so we don't need to spend as much on customer acquisition," PD Sundar, who leads QuikrServices, told ET. A benefit that Quikr has over its competitors comes in the form of other verticals that it owns. For example, a house rented through QuikrHomes could get synced services from QuikrServices on the same platform. 
 
Over the past two years, Quikr has raised $300 million and has Tiger Global, Matrix Partners, Warburg Pincus and Kinnevik as major shareholders.
