Amazon has opened India's biggest fulfilment centre in Sonipat

<ul><li>Amazon has partnered with GMR to expand its Hyderabad <keyword id="2023143" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Fulfillment-centre">fulfillment centre</keyword>. </li><li>The company will be expanding its 400,000 square feet space by 180,000 sq ft. </li><li>The expansion will help the e-commerce giant fasten its speed of delivery.</li></ul>E-commerce giant Amazon partnered with GMR Hyderabad Airport City for its largest ever fulfillment centre in India. The company will be expanding its 400,000 square feet space by another 180,000 sft. <br /><br />“In line with our vision to transform the way India buys and sells, we have been consistently investing in our infrastructure and delivery network, so we can increase our speed of delivery and provide a superior experience to both – customers and sellers,” said Akhil Saxena, Vice President, Customer Fulfilment - Asia, Amazon.<br /><br />Amazon holds 30% of the market share in Indian e-commerce industry. It has been ramping up its operations to grow its market further. In Telangana alone, Amazon has three fulfillment centres. In June it had also launched its largest delivery station in the state, spreading over 20,000 square feet. <br /><br />Across the country, Amazon now has more than 60 FCs with over 20 million cubic storage space.<br /><br />The expansion of FCs in India seems to be aligned with Amazon’s plan to have faster deliveries. In an earlier conversation with Business Insider, Akshay Sahi, Director &amp; Head of Prime, <keyword id="6354743" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon-India">Amazon India</keyword>, said that they are looking to expand their options for same day deliveries, to more cities. <br /><br />Under the partnership, Amazon is working with <keyword id="1471567" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="GMR-airport">GMR Airport</keyword> Land Development, a subsidiary of the GMR Group, which is leading the development of the airport city in Hyderabad.<br />

Amazon is hiring 1,000 people in Manchester

Amazon is planning to hire 1,500 people at a warehouse in Essex

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><ul><li><strong>A small army of Amazon employees are tweeting nice things about the working conditions in the company's warehouses.</strong></li><li><strong>The Twitter accounts have a standardised format, all bearing the Amazon smile logo as their background.</strong></li><li><strong>Amazon says these employees are called "FC Ambassadors" who have experience working in the fulfilment centres.</strong></li><li><strong>It follows a series of horror stories about working conditions, including staff having to pee in bottles because of their targets.</strong></li></ul><p><br>A small army of accounts have popped up on Twitter to tweet positive things about Amazon's warehouse working conditions.</br></p><p><a href="https://techcrunch.com/2018/08/23/what-is-this-weird-twitter-army-of-amazon-drones-cheerfully-defending-warehouse-work/">TechCrunch discovered 15 accounts</a> all following a standardised format after Twitter users Flamboyant Shoes Guy drew attention to them.</p><p>TechCrunch found that all the accounts bore the Amazon smile logo as backgrounds, and had identical structures to their bios and the title "FC Ambassador" in their name, followed by a cardboard box emoji.</p><p>The accounts engage with people about the working conditions in Amazon's fulfilment centres, weighing in when people tweet negatively about the company to praise its working conditions.</p><p>But while Flamboyant Shoes Guy thought these accounts were bots posing as Amazon workers, the company has confirmed that the FC ambassadors are real people, being paid to spread the firm's message.</p><p>"FC ambassadors are employees who have experience working in our fulfilment centers. The most important thing is that they've been here long enough to honestly share the facts based on personal experience," an Amazon spokesman told Business Insider.</p><p>"It's important that we do a good job of educating people about the actual environment inside our fulfillment centers, and the FC ambassador program is a big part of that along with the fulfilment center tours we provide."</p><p>Looking through the ambassador accounts, Business Insider found they had all joined in August. Amazon is paying people to tweet nice things about warehouse working conditions after horror stories of staff peeing in bottles

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Getty</span></p><p class="caption">Amazon warehouse workers.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul class="summary-list"><li><strong>An Amazon worker has begun writing a column in The Guardian about the working conditions and corporate culture at Amazon's warehouses.</strong></li><li><strong>The worker is a "fulfilment associate," and said that while management pays lipservice to staff welfare, workers are treated like "disposable parts."</strong></li><li><strong>Working conditions at Amazon's fulfilment centres have increasingly come under fire following reports of staff being put under immense pressure to hit targets.</strong></li><li><strong>Amazon has always insisted it provides a safe and positive workplace for workers, while a top executive said last month that warehouse horror stories are a "myth."</strong></li></ul><p>An anonymous Amazon worker has begun writing <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2018/nov/21/our-new-column-from-inside-amazon-they-treat-us-as-disposable">a column for The Guardian</a> about the working conditions at Amazon's warehouses, or fulfilment centres.</p><p>The column, titled "Amazon Diaries," will publish every other week. In its first instalment, the writer described their first day as an Amazon fulfilment associate.</p><p>They were shown an inverted pyramid chart, which signified how important different people are to the company. They were told at the top were customers, just underneath were warehouse workers, and right at the bottom was Amazon CEO and the world's richest man, Jeff Bezos.</p><p>The anonymous worker went on to destroy this image of worker care. "After a few months at the company, it becomes clear to most of us that management doesn't regard us a [sic] crucial contributors to its success. In reality, they treat us like disposable parts," they wrote.</p><p>The insider described various worker injuries - listing things including "blown backs" and "balky knees" - that go ignored by management, discrimination, and an "emotionally toxic culture."</p><p>It is far from the first time reports have emerged of poor working conditions at Amazon.</p><p>British journalist James Bloodworth went undercover at a fulfilment center, and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-warehouse-like-prison-where-workers-used-pee-bottle-2018-4?r=UK&amp;IR=T">told Business Insider that the atmosphere was like a "prison."</a> He said he came across a bottle of urine because workers were under such pressure to meet targets, they would pee in bottles to save time.</p><p><em><strong>Read more:</strong> <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-warehouse-like-prison-where-workers-used-pee-bottle-2018-4?r=UK&amp;IR=T">The undercover author who discovered Amazon warehouse workers were peeing in bottles tells us the culture was like a "prison"</a></em></p><p>At the time, Amazon said it "provides a safe and positive workplace for thousands of people across the UK with competitive pay and benefits from day one. We don't recognise these allegations as an accurate portrayal of activities in our buildings."</p><p>Similar reports also drew the ire of Senator Bernie Sanders, who said in August that he would call for <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/bernie-sanders-says-he-will-call-on-osha-to-investigate-amazon-2018-8">an investigation into "unsafe working conditions"</a> at Amazon's warehouses. 'They treat us like disposable parts': An Amazon warehouse worker is waging war on working conditions in a new anonymous newspaper column

The 9.5 acre campus will house 15,000 employees. It contains over 2.5 times more steel than the Eiffel Tower and has 49 elevators that can move at the speed of a floor per second. An average of 2,000 workers were on site daily for 39 months, to construct the building. It said workers could use the toilet whenever they needed, and that they were not monitored.</strong></li></ul><p><br />Working in an Amazon warehouse is like prison, according to an author who went undercover at a fulfilment centre and found staff were peeing in bottles because they had no time to go to the toilet.</p><p>James Bloodworth investigated casual work and its impact on people's lives for his book "Hired: Six Months in Low-Wage Britain." For research, he took low-paid jobs at an Amazon warehouse, in social care, a call centre, a building site, and as an Uber driver to explore how people coped.</p><p>Bloodworth spent just under a month in 2016 working as a "picker" at an Amazon fulfilment centre in Rugeley, in central England. This involved running around the centre picking up items that people have ordered for delivery.</p><p>Bloodworth said he was employed through Transline, an employment agency <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/business/2017/mar/13/transline-employment-agency-amazon-sports-direct-temporary-warehouse-workers">which Amazon no longer uses after it sent 1,500 people to work in poor conditions at the warehouse of major British retailer Sports Direct</a>.</p><p>Amazon staff had to meet productivity targets which, according to Bloodworth, were only feasible if you ran around the warehouse - something Amazon didn't allow for health and safety reasons.</p><p>He told Business Insider: "The job itself is really bad. I've worked in warehouses before but this was nothing like I had experienced. You don't have proper breaks - by the time you get to the canteen, you only have 15 or 20 minutes for lunch, in a 10-and-a-half hour working day. You don't have time to eat properly to get a drink.</p><p>"You have to go through security when you leave the warehouse, and that adds five minutes. It's like an airport - belt off, watch off. The atmosphere is what I imagine a prison feels like. You felt like you were walking on eggshells."</p><h2>James Bloodworth came across a bottle of urine</h2><p>Bloodworth's claims that Amazon workers were so rushed that <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/amazon-warehouse-workers-have-to-pee-into-bottles-2018-4">they had to pee in bottles</a> caused outrage on social media sites <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/technology/comments/8cmbab/amazon_warehouse_workers_pee_into_bottles_because/">such as Twitter and Reddit on Monday</a>.</p><p>To recap, Bloodworth told The Sun that the productivity targets were so high that warehouse workers were scared to take a break and go to the toilet, in case of punishment. "If you're on the top floor, you know it will take five minutes to go the toilet, and all the time you're being admonished for taking too much idle time."</p><p>He also said he had discovered the problem when he came across a bottle of urine while looking for items on an upper floor of the warehouse.</p><p>"One day I'm walking down the aisle and I go to pick up an item. And there's a bottle of straw-coloured water on the shelf and at first I thought 'Oh, what's that?'" he said. "And then it was very obvious what it was. And there was a pool of water next to it. It struck me - it was so obvious why someone would do that."</p><p>Amazon said it doesn't time warehouse workers' toilet breaks and that it ensures people can reach the bathrooms easily.</p><h2>Bloodworth said he was penalised for taking a sick day</h2><p>Bloodworth also outlined Amazon's penalty points system. Racking up six points for issues like unexplained absences could lead to a disciplinary process and dismissal, he said. <a href="https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/amazon-workers-face-sack-for-sick-leave-and-missing-targets-mdvlw9qfh">An investigation by The Times</a> at the end of 2016 similarly found that workers were penalised for taking sick days.</p><p>Legitimate sick days theoretically should not be penalised, but Bloodworth said he received a point after telling his manager that he needed a sick day. That's despite giving more than the required one hour's notice, and being able to provide a sick note.</p><p>"It's the sheer oppressiveness of management regime there," he said. "It's the most oppressive place I had ever worked, easily."</p><p>In a lengthy statement to Business Insider, Amazon said it didn't recognise Bloodworth's allegations as representative of the working environment at its warehouses.</p><p>The company also said it no longer has a "points-based attendance policy," and that it coaches people who aren't hitting their productivity targets fast enough.</p><p><strong>Here's the full statement from Amazon:</strong></p><p style="font-weight: 400; padding-left: 30px;">Amazon provides a safe and positive workplace for thousands of people across the UK with competitive pay and benefits from day one. We recognise that there are times someone cannot come to work, even if they want to. If someone is ill, we want to help them get back to work when they are fit to do so. We no longer have a points based attendance policy - we changed it following feedback from out our associates. If someone is sick, we will have a conversation with them to understand their own individual circumstances. We completely support our people, and use proper discretion when applying our absence policy.</p><p style="font-weight: 400; padding-left: 30px;">As with nearly all companies, we expect a certain level of performance from our associates and we continue to set productivity targets objectively, based on previous performance levels achieved by our workforce. Associate performance is measured and evaluated over a long period of time as we know that a variety of things could impact the ability to meet expectations in any given day or hour. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>Thomson Reuters</span></p><p class="caption">Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Amazon is going to expand its operations in Europe, <a href="http://www.ft.com/intl/cms/s/0/97acb886-c039-11e5-846f-79b0e3d20eaf.html#axzz3xxV638Ja">according to a report from The Financial Times</a>. </p><p>The company is looking to add workers for all of its operations, including "fulfillment centres" - where items are organised and shipped - office, and research roles. </p><p>According to the report, Amazon is looking at adding more than 2,500 employees in the <keyword id="6354868" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="UK">UK</keyword> alone, bringing the total headcount to around 14,500. Jobs will become available in fulfillment centres, the head office in London, and various R&amp;D labs. </p><p>Two of Amazon's key products - Prime Air and Alexa, the personal assistant - are being researched in the UK, according to the report. The company operates 10 R&amp;D centres throughout Europe. </p><p>Amazon has come under scrutiny for its tax practices in recent years, after multiple investigations revealed the company pays a very low level of tax on earnings in the UK, among other European countries. The boss of John Lewis, a UK high street retailer, <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/john-lewis-boss-andy-street-hits-out-at-amazon-2016-1">claimed the practices were unfair</a>. </p><p>Amazon says it has invested around €15 billion (£11 billion) in Europe since 2010 and £4.6 billion in the UK specifically. </p><p>Beyond e-commerce, Amazon is also engaged in a war with Microsoft over the highly lucrative software and services market. Amazon Web Services, the online storage and hosting operation, is competing against Microsoft's Azure. Analysts estimate that <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/amazon-aws-and-microsoft-azure-in-europe-2015-12">the market in Europe is worth $11 billion (£7.7 billion)</a>. </p><p>Amazon has recently been breaking sales records in the UK. Amazon is going to expand in Europe by adding thousands more employees

<keyword id="6354743" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon-India">Amazon India</keyword> said on Tuesday it will launch five new sort centres and expand eight existing ones across the country ahead of the festive season, in a bid to strengthen its delivery speed and connectivity for customers as well as sellers.<br /><br />The five new sort centres will be launched in Vishakhapatnam, Farukhnagar, Bengaluru, Mumbai and Ahmedabad.<br /><br />Apart from these new buildings, the expansion of the existing eight sort centres will increase <keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword> India's overall sortation area to more than 2.2 million square feet, across 19 states.<br /><br />Sort centres are central to Amazon's logistics network and help sort and deliver goods to Amazon delivery stations across the country.<br /><br />"By expanding and investing in the Sort Centre network, we are positioned to ensure continued customer and seller delight, ahead of the upcoming festive season," Abhinav Singh, Director, Amazon Transportation Services, Amazon India, said in a statement.<br /><br />"This expansion will create hundreds of opportunities for individuals and ancillary industries especially during this time when economic growth is a priority for the country."<br /><br />Amazon India uses technology and automation such as Sort Slides and Auto Sorters in its sortation network.<br /><br />Sort Slides allow fast manual sortation of packages and Auto Sorters are completely automated machines that perform end-to-end sorting of packages.<br /><br />This automated and expanded network helps increase the speed of transporting packages for customers and sellers in the country.<br /><br />In July this year, Amazon India announced the expansion plans of its warehouse network by adding 10 new fulfilment centres and expansion of five existing buildings.<br />

People just peed in bottles because they lived in fear of being ­disciplined over 'idle time' and ­losing their jobs just because they needed the loo."</p><p>Amazon is famous for tracking how fast its warehouse workers can pick and package items from its shelves, imposing strictly timed breaks and targets. It issues warning points for those who don't meet their goals or take extended breaks.</p><p>A survey of Amazon workers, released on Monday, found almost three-quarters of fulfilment centre staff are afraid of using the toilet in case they miss their targets.</p><p>"[Targets] have increased dramatically. I do not drink water because I do not have time to go to the toilet," the survey quotes one anonymous worker as saying.</p><p>Another said: "The target grows every year. I do not have two more legs yet to make the 100% to pick, where you actually need to run and go to the toilet just during the break. Packing 120 products per hour is terribly heavy.</p><p>"You have to pack two products per minute. You do not have time to drink water because you go to the toilet after every evening sends messages to the scanner with the target and tells you to hurry."</p><p>The survey, compiled by worker campaign platform Organise, also found that workers felt considerably more anxious after joining Amazon.</p><h2>Workers punished for being sick</h2><p>Another employee said she was ill while pregnant, and was still handed warning points.</p><p>And yet another said: "I turned up for my shift even though I felt like shit, managed 2 hours then I just could not do anymore. Told my supervisor and was signed off sick, I had a gastric bug (sickness and diarrhoea, very bad) saw my doc.
