At Amazon's stores, customers don't have to wait in line or checkout formally. There are no cashiers. Customers essentially utilize Amazon's new Go app.<br />

We tried to pay $1 in cash for a soda at Amazon's cashier-less convenience store of the future, and it took way longer than expected

And just like its 11 other locations across the US, this checkout free, (supposedly) line-free store promises to provide a speedy shopping experience that caters nicely to a busy New Yorker's schedule.</p><p>But there's one major difference at this location: shoppers will also be able to pay in cash - exactly the opposite to what Amazon set out to do with these stores.</p><h2>Bringing back cash</h2><p>The decision to bring cash payments to these cash free stores came after the company faced backlash from critics who said Amazon Go discriminated against customers who don't have bank accounts.</p><p>Critics say that cashless stores exclude millions of potential customers who do not have a bank account. 8.4 million households, or roughly 6.5% of all households in America, were "unbanked" in 2017, <a href="https://www.fdic.gov/householdsurvey/">according to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation</a>.</p><p>Because of this, some states and cities have also considered banning cashless stores. Massachusetts, Philadelphia, and New Jersey require stores to accept cash payment, and New York City and San Francisco are considering similar measures.</p><p>In April, Amazon told <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2019/04/10/amazon-exec-tells-employees-that-go-stores-will-start-accepting-cash.html?__source=twitter%7Cmain">CNBC</a> that it would be looking to add "additional payment mechanisms" to its stores in the future. But at the New York location, an Amazon employee will swipe in customers who want to pay by cash, and scan any items with a mobile device to check them out.</p><p>The customer will be able to shop the store and then go to the checkout cart to pay with cash and get a receipt before leaving with their purchased items, a spokesperson for Amazon told Business Insider. There will still be no cash registers at the store, however.</p><p>The new store will offer a mix of ready-to-eat meals and snacks, which are made by Amazon and local kitchens and bakeries including Dominique Ansel, Magnolia Bakery, and Hale &amp; Hearty. Amazon opened its first cashierless store in New York, but customers can still pay in cash after a backlash

<p class="source"><span>Hass Holmberg/TT News Agency/Reuters</span></p><p class="caption">Cashless stores sparked a major backlash among legislators worried about inequality.</p><ul class="summary-list"><li>Cashless stores have been a polarizing retail invention.</li><li>They have been lauded as innovative and convenient in addition to being derided as sowing inequality.</li><li>Fears over the exclusionary nature of cashless stores prompted a spate of legislative <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-cities-banning-cashless-businesses-winners-losers-cashless-economy-2020-2">bans</a> against them.</li><li>Alex Bau, the Federal Reserve's director of data and policy analysis of the cash product office, said that nowadays, retailers seem to be more keen to "meet the customer where they're at" when it comes to payment options.</li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/?hprecirc-bullet">Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories</a>.</li></ul><p>It's fair to say that, on the surface, cashless retail stores have undergone a bit of a rise and fall.</p><p>Cashless stores may have once seemed a futuristic innovation, but over the past few years they've ended up ushering in a backlash against inequality rather than a retail revolution. </p><p>But that doesn't mean that cashless technology was a flash in the pan. Retailers are still interested in cashless options in terms of cutting costs and meeting consumer needs, even if a fully cashless environment remains elusive and unrealistic. </p><h2>The cashless backlash</h2><p>Around four years ago, a cashless retail experience seemed in sight. Significant doubts about a cashless future <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/america-too-paranoid-go-cashless-2016-10">lingered</a>, but by 2017 FDIC had found that cash represented only 30% of all payments, according to the <a href="https://hbr.org/2019/07/is-the-u-s-on-its-way-to-becoming-a-cashless-society">Harvard Business Review</a>. </p><p>Some big names ended up coming to the forefront to take up the cashless mantle.</p><p class="source"><span>Fabiana Buontempo/Business Insider</span></p><p class="caption">Inside an Amazon Go.</p>Sweetgreen, a salad chain that was early to adopt a cashless model, also rolled back its goals. In 2016, cofounder Jonathan Neman told <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sweetgreen-goes-cashless-2016-12">Business Insider</a> that by going cashless the company was working to "simplify things."<p>Then the first ever <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-go-grocery-store-future-photos-video-2016-12">Amazon Go</a> store opened its doors in January 2018, offering shoppers a fully cash-free, checkout-free experience. Amazon reportedly envisioned opening these <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/report-amazon-wants-3000-amazon-go-stores-by-2021-2018-9">cashierless</a> stores by the thousands. Of course, Amazon's disruption of payment methods was a two-way street. In September 2019, the online retail giant teamed up with Western Union to allow more cash-dependent customers to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-western-union-partnership-us-lets-customers-pay-cash-2019-9">shop online</a> using cash.</p><p>But the dark side of the cashless trend would shortly erupt into full view.</p><p>In 2018, <a href="https://www.pewtrusts.org/en/research-and-analysis/articles/2019/11/08/rise-of-cashless-retailers-problematic-for-some-consumers">Pew</a> surveyed 1,164 individuals who had made a payment in the past month, to weigh the differences between different groups' cash use. It found that 65% of people who said they primarily used cash were unbanked, 25% made less than $25,000 a year, and 20% were minorities.</p><p>"Non-acceptance of cash could potentially marginalize those that have limited access to the financial system or mobile technological devices," researchers from the Congressional Research Service, a public policy think tank run through the Library of Congres, wrote in a 2019 <a href="https://fas.org/sgp/crs/misc/R45716.pdf">report</a>.</p><p>Thus, retailers opting to go cashless were effectively denying service to consumers without access to banks, as well as those from poorer households and those from minority backgrounds. </p><p>Legislators in major cities across the United States began taking aim at the cashless stores. <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/01/23/nyregion/nyc-cashless-ban.html">New York City</a>, <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/philadelphia-is-first-u-s-city-to-ban-cashless-stores-11551967201?mod=hp_lead_pos5">Philadelphia</a>, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-pay-cash-amazon-go-san-francisco-2019-9">San Francisco</a>, and the state of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/new-jersey-state-legislators-pass-bill-outlawing-cashless-retailers-2019-2">New Jersey</a> have all nixed cash-only stores, regulating that retailers must accept cash from paying customers. NPR <a href="https://www.npr.org/2020/02/06/803003343/some-businesses-are-going-cashless-but-cities-are-pushing-back">reported</a> that Washington, DC, was weighing a similar bill.</p><p>The results of the legislative tide turning against cashless stores were rather definitive. Amazon Go dropped its exclusively cashless <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-go-proves-cashless-dream-dead-2019-5">model</a>, and it currently accepts cash at all locations. Sweetgreen <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-sweetgreen-backtrack-on-cashless-2019-4">reportedly</a> began accepting cash at all locations at the end of 2019. </p><h2>'Meet the customer where they're at'</h2><p>Alex Bau, the director of data and policy analysis of the cash product office of the Federal Reserve System, spoke to Business Insider about the cashless trend. </p><p>"We do continue to see interest in retailers or merchants in managing or reducing the cost associated with cash handling," Bau said. "We haven't necessarily heard of an increase in the number of cashless businesses, but the cost factor is always in their mind."</p><p>The Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco published a <a href="https://www.frbsf.org/cash/publications/fed-notes/2019/august/cash-me-if-you-can-impacts-of-cashless-businesses-on-retailers-consumers-cash-use/">note</a> in August 2019 called "Cash Me If You Can: Impacts of Cashless Businesses on Retailers, Consumers, and Cash Use." It went over a number of pros and cons associated with going cashless. The benefits of a cashless approach included reduced cash handling costs, inoculation against theft, and faster transactions for consumers.</p><p>On the flip side, the note found that cashless businesses promoted outright financial exclusion, made life more difficult for consumers with a preference for cash, and were tied to retailers racking up credit card fees. </p><p>The 2019 <a href="https://fas.org/sgp/crs/misc/R45716.pdf">report</a> from the Congressional Research Service added that cash provides financial safety and a guaranteed protection of privacy for those unwilling to establish bank accounts. </p><p>Bau said that cash tends to be the preferred method of payment during events like snowstorms, when there's the possibility that the power will go down or a payment network will crash. </p><p class="source"><span>Crystal Cox/Business Insider</span></p><p class="caption">Electronic payment systems are on the rise, but don't expect cash to disappear anytime soon.</p><p>Whether or not going cashless saves money - given the reality of card companies' fees - tends to depend on the retailer and how "streamlined" its operations are, according to Bau.</p><p>Given the legislative backlash and the mixed results offered up by going cashless, it would appear that retailers are at a fork in the road when it comes to payment methods. But that doesn't mean that cashless technology is about to be dumped. The 2019 <a href="https://fas.org/sgp/crs/misc/R45716.pdf">report</a> from the Congressional Research Service noted that cash's "hegemony as a payment system appears to have come to an end, as electronic payment systems have gained popularity, and the ubiquity of cash acceptance for in-person purchases also seems precarious."</p><p>Cashless options within stores still pose an opportunity that retailers are looking to explore. Bau said that in his office's discussions with retailers and merchants, businesses are typically looking to best accommodate the customer. </p><p>"In general, retailers want to meet the customer where they're at for a payment option," Bau said.</p><p>So while a cashless society might be unfeasible at the moment, it would appear that, for some businesses, adopting cashless technology while also maintaining a baseline ability to accept cash may be the strategy. </p><p>But that's not to say that cash is about to disappear.</p><p>Cashless stores are in fact just the latest iteration of payment options to pop up over the course of financial history. In the beginning, there was cash. Then the check popped up, following by the inception of the debit card and its cousin, the credit card.</p><p>Bau said that while the popularity of certain "payment instruments" may spike or wane, they rarely fade away entirely. Cashless stores once looked like the future of shopping - but backlash has complicated its arrival

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>AP/Elaine Thompson</span></p><p class="caption">Amazon Go</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul><li><strong>Companies like <a href="http://markets.businessinsider.com/stock/SBUX-Quote" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Starbucks</a> and <a href="http://markets.businessinsider.com/stock/AMZN-Quote" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Amazon</a> are testing stores that do not accept cash. </strong></li><li><strong>Going cashless can provide key advantages for retailers, such as boosting efficiency and preventing robberies. </strong></li><li><strong>However, for the 7% of Americans without a bank account, a cashless society would mean complete exclusion. </strong></li></ul><p><br />The US could be on its way to a cash-free economy.</p><p>And, while going cashless has some distinct upsides in the tech-obsessed world of <keyword id="6354851" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Retail">retail</keyword>, it could be a dangerous development for some of the country's most vulnerable people. </p><p>This week, Amazon finally opened the doors of its futuristic grocery store, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-go-store-opens-no-checkout-lines-photos-2018-1">Amazon Go</a>, in Seattle. The cash-free store allows customers to simply walk out without paying at a cash register, with the proper money simply being charged to their Amazon account. </p><p>Amazon isn't the only company experimenting with cashless. The popular salad chain <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/sweetgreen-goes-cashless-2016-12">Sweetgreen</a> announced it was going completely cash-free in late 2016, and Starbucks recently opened a cashless store in Seattle. </p><p>"Mobile payment in the U.S. has grown to over 30% of total tender," Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson said in a call with investors on Thursday. "The ubiquity of mobile and credit card payment is enabling us to begin an exploration of cashless stores in the US."</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="http://www.fool.com/investing/general/2015/11/02/chipotle-mexican-grill-inc-just-made-a-game-changi.aspx">Starbucks, via The Motley Fool</a></span></p><p class="caption">Starbucks mobile order and pay.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Maya Mikhailov, the CMO of retail app developer GPShopper, told Business Insider that quick-service restaurants and other chains, such as Sweetgreen and Starbucks, are set to lead the way in the revolution against cash. Going cashless can speed up service, dissuade theft, and allow companies to gather more information on shoppers by linking them to digital loyalty programs. </p><p><a href="https://retail.emarketer.com/article/consumers-ready-go-cashless/5a66516cebd40008bc79120f?ecid=NL1014">Roughly 75% of respondents </a>in an online poll conducted by CivicScience in January said that a restaurant going cashless would either not impact how often they visited, or convince them to visit more. Only 15% said they would stop going to the restaurant if it no longer accepted cash. </p><p>However, part of that 15% is a proportion of Americans who simply can't shop somewhere if it stops accepting cash. </p><p>As of 2015,<a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/ranks-of-the-unbanked-decline-fdic-survey-finds-1473307140"> 7% of Americans were "unbanked,"</a> or did not have a bank account. That's roughly 22 million people that companies that go cashless completely exclude as customers. </p><p>Most people who don't have bank accounts don't do so by choice. It's because they lack the funds to do so, resulting in a vicious cycle in which not having a bank account has consequences - such as not being able to build credit - that result in making life more expensive. </p><p>The implications what going cashless could mean for the poor is emerging as an international conundrum, as the movement against cash catches on across the globe.  </p><p>"Billions of poor people in the developing world depend on cash to buy goods for very small amounts, often mere cents,"  Srinivasan Sivabalan <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-07-17/going-cashless-bad-for-tax-cheats-privacy-poor-quicktake-q-a">wrote in Bloomberg.</a> "It may be too costly to host those transactions on a network. That could create a second-class citizenry of people who don't have equal access to banking services."</p><p>"The beauty of cash is that it's a direct and simple transaction between all kinds of different people, no matter how rich or poor," financial writer Dominic Frisby <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/cities/2017/jan/09/rise-cashless-city-contactless-payments-exclusion-cashfree-society">told The Guardian.</a> "If you begin to insist on cashlessness, it does put pressure on you to be banked and signed up to financial system, and many of the poorest are likely to remain outside of that system. So there is this real danger of exclusion."</p><p>Mikhailov is more optimistic, pointing out that the percentage of the US that is unbanked is declining. What's more, she said that the rise of cashlessness will force companies to find solutions for the unbanked.</p><p>Fintech startups are already attempting to address unbanked communities in developing countries. With cashless retailers on the rise, the opportunity to find fixes for unbanked Americans also grows.</p><p>In fact, it could be a necessity if the US wants to protect its most vulnerable residents. This is the tech news you need to know this Wednesday.</p><ol><li><strong><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-android-q-parental-controls-2019-5?r=US&amp;IR=T">Google is building parental controls into Android that will let you limit how much time your kids spend on each app</a>.</strong> The company previously offered such features as a standalone app called Family Link.</li><li><strong><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-maps-ar-feature-2019-5?r=US&amp;IR=T">Google unveiled a new augmented reality feature for Maps, but it's only coming to Pixel phones for now</a>.</strong> Using the phone's camera, Google Maps will identify your location and place signs and arrows to show you where you need to go.</li><li><strong><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-thinking-about-foldable-phones-pixel-chief-says-2019-5?r=US&amp;IR=T">Google is "absolutely" thinking about foldable phones, the company's Pixel chief Mario Queiroz said</a>.</strong> For foldable phones to resonate with consumers, device makers need to come up with more compelling use cases, said Queiroz.</li><li><strong><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/samsung-galaxy-fold-pre-order-cancelation-2019-5?r=US&amp;IR=T">Samsung is cancelling pre-orders of the $2,000 Galaxy Fold if it doesn't ship by the end of May</a>.</strong> The device was scheduled to come out in late April, but when several review units given to the media broke, the Korean smartphone giant pushed back the release date indefinitely.</li><li><strong><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/uber-lyft-strike-locations-where-drivers-are-protesting-new-york-los-angeles-london-2019-5?r=US&amp;IR=T">Uber and Lyft drivers are striking in over a dozen cities around the world on Wednesday</a>.</strong> Many drivers say that their pay has consistently fallen in recent years and that they're unhappy with their status as independent contractors.</li><li><strong><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lyft-waymo-self-driving-robo-taxi-partnering-phoenix-arizona-2019-5?r=US&amp;IR=T">Lyft is partnering with Waymo to launch robo-taxis in Arizona</a>.</strong> The cars are fully autonomous, according to Waymo, but they'll still employ safety drivers to take over if there are any hiccups during rides.</li><li><strong><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lyft-cfo-says-2019-will-be-peak-financial-loss-year-2019-5?r=US&amp;IR=T">Lyft's CFO said 2019 will be its "peak loss" year</a>.</strong> Lyft reported its first quarterly earnings that showed accelerating growth in Q1 but also continued losses.</li><li><strong><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/liquid-death-water-mike-cessario-2019-5?r=US&amp;IR=T">A former Netflix creative director got $1.6 million from big names in tech for a canned water startup called Liquid Death</a>.</strong> The funding was led by Science Inc, and joined by other tech notables including Dollar Shave Club founder &amp; CEO Michael Dubin, Twitter co-founder Biz Stone, and Away co-founder Jen Rubio.</li><li><strong><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-cars-diagnose-parts-that-need-to-be-replaced-order-new-ones-2019-5?r=US&amp;IR=T">Tesla cars can now figure out which parts need to be replaced and order new ones</a>.</strong> "Our cars can keep tabs on certain components to let you know if they need replacing and order parts ahead of your next service visit," Tesla tweeted.</li><li><strong><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-go-opens-in-new-york-accepts-cash-2019-5?r=US&amp;IR=T">Amazon opened its first cashierless store in New York, but customers can still pay in cash after a backlash</a>.</strong> The retailer faced backlash for its entirely cash-free stores, which critics said discriminated against customers who don't have a bank account.</li></ol><p>Have an Amazon Alexa device? "Almost all digital needs - social, chat, transport, ecommerce - are consolidated within just a few apps."</p><p>In the United States, some still argue that "cash is king," and parts of the country will have pockets of cash-only businesses. In China, cash is a relic of the past. Alipay and WeChat run the market, supporting purchases from street-food vendors to utility payments. As a result, Starbucks will be upping its game to court these highly digitized customers.</p><p>With 80% of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/starbucks-adds-alipay-in-china-2017-9">Starbucks transactions in China being cash-free</a>, the company now has an extra 30 labor hours a week to put towards customer engagement, Barish wrote. It is also pushing more<a href="https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20180515006821/en/Starbucks-First-Ever-China-Investor-Conference-Highlights-Accelerated"> interactive marketing </a>in China with social gifting on WeChat and augmented reality features in stores. The My Starbucks Rewards program has also been a hit in the country with 7 million people paying to be a member and around 90% app usage, he wrote. The next step will be rolling out delivery and mobile order and pay according to Barish. </p><p>As emphasized over and over again in the company's second-quarter earnings, <a href="http://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/starbucks-stock-price-china-business-2018-4-1022553813">dominating China</a> will be key to the coffee chain's long-term strategy. The US market is slowing a bit as evidenced by the 2% comparable sales growth in the last quarter compared to the 4% comparable sales in China. The opportunities will be significant as the <a href="https://www.mckinsey.com/industries/retail/our-insights/mapping-chinas-middle-class">country's middle class continues to grow rapidly</a>. </p><p>The coffee chain found success in the country by investing in its people and working hard to understand the culture, Barish wrote. Already, a new store opens every 15 hours.
