They are willing to pay Amazon's monthly or annual fees for Prime, after all. "They're a little bit less price sensitive" than shoppers who have to delay their purchases until closer to the holidays, he said.Offering outdoor gear, yard tools, and other out-of-season products during October's event is likely one way that Amazon is trying to get Prime members to spend more, Wathieu said. "You have to see this more as a strategic move from Amazon to leverage what their capabilities are, including having swayed everyone into Prime membership that they need to leverage," he said.An Amazon spokesperson said, "Right now, we are focused on making this year's event special for our members and are excited to offer exclusive early savings this holiday season." Amazon's Prime Big Deals might surprise you this October

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Amazon's sales of cheap items are surging, driven by faster delivery speeds, executive says.</li><li>Amazon's essential product sales are growing 50% faster than other items.</li></ul>The sales of cheaper items are surging on <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-ceo-explains-why-he-wants-fewer-managers-hate-bureaucracy-2024-11">Amazon</a>.During a recent internal all-hands meeting, Amazon's retail CEO <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/profile-of-amazons-new-retail-ceo-doug-herrington-2022-7">Doug Herrington</a> said that the everyday essentials business, which includes health, beauty, and grocery products, is "growing 50% faster than the rest of the store," according to a recording of the event obtained by Business Insider.The growth is primarily driven by faster delivery speeds because people tend to spend more and shop more frequently when orders arrive quickly, Herrington said. Over 50% of those everyday essentials are now delivered on the same or next day, he added."It has really supercharged our grocery and everyday essential business," Herrington said, referring to faster shipping speeds. "And these are especially the low-priced everyday essentials, the things that most households purchase every week."Amazon has been investing heavily to make its warehouse and logistics network more regional. The goal has been to not only speed up deliveries, but also make it less expensive for the company to offer faster delivery.<h2 id="c0dfe482-5c31-44d1-a35d-fdfab5fe3a43">No longer "CRaP"</h2>Lower costs help Amazon offer cheaper products, which often come with thinner profit margins. This is a notable shift from the company's previous strategy of curbing sales of such products. Internally, Amazon used to refer to these products as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-wants-to-stop-selling-unprofitable-items-report-2018-12">"CRaP," or "can't realize a profit,"</a> because they were relatively expensive to ship and less profitable.Amazon's <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-andy-jassy-wooed-wall-street-overhauled-bloated-tech-giant-2024-7">record profits</a> in recent years, alongside <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-layoffs-10000-employees-grand-challenge-team-dramatic-changes-2022-11">drastic cost cuts</a> and major layoffs, are also contributing to the new approach. The change can potentially help Amazon better compete against Chinese e-commerce upstarts Temu and Shein, which are rapidly growing on the back of cheap items. Shein, for example, is expanding to sell more daily essentials, like toothpaste, skincare, and toys, Reuters reported.Amazon's spokesperson declined to comment.<h2 id="27100129-02ac-43d6-9461-8899978fdf94">'Perfect placement'</h2>During the recent all-hands meeting, Herrington said Amazon deliveries have become faster and cheaper after the company redesigned its network of warehouses to serve smaller regions. Now, Amazon has more warehouses assigned to customers close by, which allows for faster order fulfillment.As a result, Amazon has been able to reduce the "cost to serve" each order for two years in a row, while achieving the fastest delivery speeds for Prime shipments this year, Herrington added."We call that effort perfect placement," Herrington said.In October, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said the company has been "maniacal" about lowering the cost to serve in recent years. It's a real competitive advantage because now Amazon can afford to sell lower-priced items economically, he said."There's an expression that we've used a lot of times over the years that it's easy to lower prices, but it's much harder to be able to afford to lower prices," Jassy said during a call with analysts.<h2 id="c402255a-a3e2-42e8-8f7f-81912d344b85">'Real positive'</h2>During last month's analyst call, Jassy added that the growth of cheaper items is a "real positive" because it is predicated on faster delivery speeds. He said that this usually leads to growth in customer loyalty, order frequency, and purchase volume."We see the ability to unlock whole new elements of the consumer spend," Jassy said.Brian Olsavsky, Amazon's CFO, added that strong growth in everyday essentials is a positive sign of Amazon becoming a part of consumers' daily shopping habits.Evercore analyst Mark Mahaney wrote in a recent note that the shift is important for Amazon, especially since its most loyal Prime membership base is <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-prime-growth-takes-off-again-record-75-americans-use-2024-4">growing at a slower pace</a>."While the growth in those categories represents a negative mix shift in terms of margins, it increases shopper loyalty, shopping frequency and increases the basket size — important if the total Prime HH membership base in the US is maturing," Mahaney wrote.Amazon is doubling down on these efforts. Herrington said in the recent all-hands meeting that Amazon is investing in new warehouse robotics technology that can further improve packaging speed. Amazon is still gunning to get the remaining quarter on board.Prime Day is "an opportunity to allow non-Prime members to peer over the shoulder of their friends and family, see those deals, and wonder if they should sign up," said Jeremy Bartlow, a partner and consumer expert at PA Consulting."They use it as a massive volume booster, but also to start getting more and more scale each year with people who haven't jumped on the Prime bandwagon yet," Bartlow said.But that's just the gateway drug.Amazon's deals announced in the lead-up to Prime Day include access for members to three free months of delivery from the company's grocery operations, including Whole Foods and Amazon Fresh, for orders over $35 (the cost a month after the freebies run out is $9.99).Music fans can also get five months free of Amazon Music Unlimited (another $9.99 a month), three months of Kindle Unlimited ($11.99 a month, plus you need a Kindle e-reader, which retails for a minimum of $99.99), or three free months of Audible Premium Plus (plans start at $7.95 a month).Amazon is also offering steep discounts to Prime members on its own electronic devices. One version of its Ring video doorbell is on sale for $50, down from $100, while a 40-inch Fire TV is $170 — roughly one-third off its regular price.The strategy is all about getting customers to try new products in the Amazon world — and hopefully sticking with them by paying additional subscriptions on top of their Prime membership, Bartlow said.For example, "they sell their tablets so cheaply" to get people into Amazon's ecosystem. Plus, "many of them will have ads and a whole user interface that's optimized to push their digital content, which is very different than buying a tablet from another brand," he said. Those who work through the company's Flex program are independent contractors using their own cars and are paid by the block. Making certain types of deliveries, such as grocery orders from Whole Foods, comes with the potential to earn tips.The Flex worker BI spoke with says she's seen more new faces at the Amazon facilities she frequents — a sign, she said, that Amazon is staffing up in advance of the banner shopping week."Prime Day, and then right around October, those are the two biggest times when they hire people because that's when everybody's shopping," the worker told BI, referencing the fall increase in hiring ahead of the holiday shopping season.One challenge for Flex workers is delivering all those packages within the time allotted for the block, the worker said.The worker recalled delivering about 30 packages per three-and-a-half-hour block earlier this year. Lately, though, the worker has noticed that number reaching closer to 40, especially during evening delivery shifts.And if you don't do it, "they'll just say you're unreliable, and you're gone," the worker said.Getting shifts with the best pay also requires a strategy, she said.During a normal week in her area, a three-and-a-half hour block of delivering packages pays $63, the driver told Business Insider. That rate can go above $80 if drivers wait until hours — or even minutes — before a shift, she said.But in the run-up to Prime Day, those higher offers come up sooner — even a full day before the shift, she said.Workers are also competing with the influx of new drivers around the event. Amazon's delivery service partners, for instance, use Amazon-owned vans.Flex workers, meanwhile, are independent contractors who are paid per shift (or "block," as the workers call them) and use their own cars to work. On some deliveries, such as grocery orders from Whole Foods, they can earn tips.But like all independent contractors, Flex drivers can decide what kind of work they'd like to do. And for some, picking up dozens of packages and delivering them around busy cities or sprawling suburbs isn't worth the money.Earlier this month, on a Reddit page for Flex drivers, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.reddit.com/r/AmazonFlexDrivers/comments/1dwr37b/prime_day_what_should_i_expect_as_a_driver/">a poster</a> claiming to be a new driver for the program asked whether working during Prime Day meant better pay or more shifts to choose from.Some commenters pointed to a surge in new Flex drivers who joined the platform just before this year's Prime Day. In the past, lots of new drivers have meant that shifts with surge pricing — those for which Amazon pays drivers more — are rarer, the commenters said."Too many new drivers that drive down rates," one wrote.Another commenter offered practical advice for the new driver. "Bring TP just in case you have to pp and there's no bathroom/service," the commenter wrote, appearing to use an abbreviation for "toilet paper."Some <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-drivers-say-peeing-in-bottles-common-despite-company-denials-2021-3">Amazon delivery workers said they peed in bottles</a> as they faced pressure to complete their routes, BI reported in 2018."Amazon Flex delivery partners have the freedom to take breaks and run errands during their delivery window specified in-app," Branden Baribeau, an Amazon spokesperson, told BI. "We design delivery routes so that they are safe and can be comfortably completed within the estimated duration of the delivery block" using factors like distance and weather forecasts, he added.Baribeau told BI last week that Prime Day "gives individuals the opportunity to set their own schedule and be their own boss, while earning competitive pay."The Flex model has played a key role in expanding Amazon's delivery abilities, particularly when it comes to fast options like same-day delivery, said Dhruv Grewal, a professor of marketing at Babson College."This model gives them the ability to both increase speed and reduce the cost of both owning the merchandise, owning the infrastructure of warehousing and owning the distribution infrastructure of their own fleets or trucks," Grewal told BI.But one Flex driver in Washington state told BI that she's not planning to make any deliveries for Amazon this week. It has a giant subscriber base and a towering lead over its rivals (most of which are still struggling to figure out a profitable streaming model), and its stock price recently hit an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/netflix-stock-historic-high-chart-streaming-2024-9">all-time high</a>. Still, that gargantuan comeback — it hit $725 a share earlier this month after falling below $180 in summer 2022 following a rare subscriber loss — has some investors asking if the company is worth its high price tag. After all, Netflix still <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/youtube-not-netflix-is-big-threat-to-hollywood-analysis-2024-2">trails YouTube in terms of TV watch time</a>, and its share of the total TV viewing, per Nielsen, hasn't materially changed over the past year. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-beating-netflix-upfront-battle-for-tv-sports-dollars-2024-7">Amazon threw a wrench into Netflix's advertising ambitions</a> by <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-prime-video-preview-shake-up-tv-ad-marketplace-2024-1">steamrolling into the market</a> earlier this year. Ahead of Netflix's Q3 earnings report on October 17, here are the top questions on Wall Street's mind about how Netflix can keep its growth going and live up to its sky-high valuation. <h2>Where will future revenue come from?</h2>For all of Netflix's expansion overseas, the US and Canada remain by far its biggest growth engine, accounting for 70% of revenue growth from 2019 to 2023, Barclays analysts wrote this month. How much growth is left? The benefits of Netflix's password-sharing crackdown will fade over time, which could weigh down subscriber growth. Netflix is also counting on the US and Canada to drive advertising growth, but Barclays argued that this could come with trade-offs in either lower revenue (if more people <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ads-are-coming-to-netflix-heres-everything-you-need-to-know">choose its ad tier</a>) or lower subscriber growth (if Netflix raises prices to compensate for that). <h2>How is advertising going?</h2>With subscriber growth potential limited in the US because Netflix is already quite saturated in the market, Netflix needs to ramp up ad revenue. It's also opening up advertising sales through tech partnerships, and deals to broadcast live events like the Tyson-Paul fight, two NFL Christmas Day games, and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-netflix-pro-wrestling-wwe-deal-makes-sense-2024-1">WWE fights</a> — all things that are catnip to advertisers. Netflix execs have said that they expect advertising to eventually account for at least <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/netflix-could-add-free-streaming-service-fast-build-ads-business-2023-1">10% of the company's revenue</a>. But the ad tier base is still relatively small (15 million in the US and Canada, LightShed Partners estimated). It needs a lot more to become a meaningful contributor to revenue, though how much is unclear. While Netflix's ad tier growth is steadily adding inventory, those tech deals will take a couple of years to ramp up. The <keyword id="19899797" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="wwe" source="keywords">WWE</keyword> partnership won't start until 2025. And as part of its effort to attract advertisers, Netflix is spending to acquire more ad-friendly content like live sports (as well as to build a video gaming library), which could increase its content costs and cut into its margins. Meanwhile, <keyword id="19904608" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="amazon" source="keywords">Amazon</keyword> came on strong when it rolled out ads by default across Prime Video this year, putting downward pressure on Netflix's and other streamers' ad rates. Barclays wrote that forcing people to watch more ads could also have a downside for Netflix: "It's tough to see how this doesn't come with its own engagement trade-offs." <h2>Are price increases coming?</h2>One way Netflix can keep growing revenue if subscriber and advertiser growth are limited is to raise prices for consumers. There's broad consensus among Wall Street analysts that Netflix has room to do so, given its relative value in the market and price increases by its peers. <keyword id="19941660" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="citibank" source="keywords">Citibank</keyword> analysts think Netflix could raise US prices by 12%. But a US price increase would only do so much for Netflix, given its ability to raise prices overseas is limited, Citibank wrote. Netflix last raised prices in October 2023, on its premium and basic tiers, but not its ad-supported or standard plans. Netflix has the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/netflix-wins-streaming-wars-this-chart-shows-why-2024-1">lowest cancellation rate</a>, per research from the data firm Antenna, and the lowest-priced ad tier of the streamers, so it has a lot of credit with subscribers on this front. So, the question is more when prices will go up — not if. Or, as <keyword id="23618376" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="newstreet" source="keywords">NewStreet</keyword> analysts wrote, is it possible Netflix could go in the opposite direction, at least in some markets? The streamer could decrease prices in small markets to build penetration or launch a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/netflix-could-add-free-streaming-service-fast-build-ads-business-2023-1">free, fully ad-supported tier</a> in select markets. <h2>What's happening with games?</h2>Netflix has been building out a video game library since 2021 but has shared little data on its progress. Meanwhile, questions persist inside and outside the company about what the strategy around games is and if they're <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/netflix-games-mike-verdu-leaving-strategy-2024-6">worth the investment</a>. The company recently installed a new gaming leader from Epic Games, who has already <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/netflix-shakes-up-gaming-division-new-epic-hire-layoffs-2024-10">begun shaking things up</a>. With doubts about where Netflix's next growth act could come from, don't be surprised if questions grow louder about the games business, such as how efforts to promote games on the home screen have paid off and how Netflix might be looking to monetize them. <h2>What's next?</h2>For all the talk of Netflix's dominance, the overarching question looming for the company is how it moves from what's long been a single business model — selling subscriptions — to multiple business lines. Beyond advertising and games, the company also has been putting on events and selling merch tied to its popular shows like <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bridgerton-merch-brand-collaborations-netflix-marketing-regency-trends-2024-6">"Bridgerton"</a> — areas that they say are about building fandom and retaining subscribers. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Amazon's customers are buying cheap products, the retailer's top execs said in its Thursday earnings call.</li><li>Those products are being purchased frequently and in larger amounts, the execs added.</li></ul>Amazon's customers are buying its cheaper products, but at a higher volume, the company said, announcing a positive slate of third-quarter earnings."At a time when consumers are being careful about how much they spend, we're continuing to lower prices and ship even more quickly, and we can see this resonating with customers as our unit growth continues to be strong and outpace even our revenue growth," Andy Jassy, Amazon's CEO, said in an <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-stock-earnings-report-call-live-updates-2024-10">earnings call</a> on Thursday.And customers are increasingly using the platform to buy cheaper everyday household items, like "health, beauty, and personal care as well as nonperishable grocery," Brian Olsavsky, Amazon's finance chief, said in the call.While these items "often have a lower average selling price," Olsavsky said that these buying patterns are still a net positive for Amazon."We see that when customers purchase these types of items from us, they build bigger baskets, shop more frequently and spend more on Amazon," Olsavsky said.Amazon's also dealing with a customer base that's "looking for deals" and "price conscious," Jassy said. He said that this consumer behavior "matches up well" with <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/deals/amazon-prime-day">Amazon's Prime membership and sales events</a>. Paid Prime memberships have gone up this quarter, Jassy added, which has been "hugely impactful" for Amazon.<h2 id="7c171d02-c13e-4629-9b96-4874853c1aaf">Amazon's cost-conscious customer base</h2>Amid the high cost of <a target="_blank" rel="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-its-expensive-to-own-a-home-mortgage-insurance-interest2024-4">homeownership</a>, <a target="_blank" rel="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/high-childcare-costs-in-us-women-workforce-cheapest-countries-kids-2024-2">childcare</a>, and <a target="_blank" rel="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/retirement-millennials-falling-behind-savings-americans-renters-homebuying-loans-finance-2024-05">retirement,</a> US consumers have been <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-americans-are-saving-money-less-travel-diy-projects-clothes-2024-9">saving more</a> and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/shoppers-spending-less-retailers-brands-cutting-prices-economy-explained-why-2024-7">cutting back</a> on everything from food and travel to <a target="_blank" rel="" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/americans-doing-less-diy-worrying-sign-economy-lowes-earnings-2024-8">home improvement</a>.Wells Fargo carried out a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="c-link" href="https://newsroom.wf.com/English/news-releases/news-release-details/2024/Two-thirds-of-Americans-have-decreased-spending-due-to-economy-Wells-Fargo-Money-Study-finds/default.aspx">survey</a> from September 5 to October 3, 2023, of more than 3,500 US adults and teenagers. Around 67% of respondents said they had slashed their spending due to the economy. And 62% of the survey's respondents said they had little left for "extras" after paying their monthly bills.Representatives for Amazon did not respond to a request for comment from Business Insider, sent outside business hours.Amazon reported <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-stock-earnings-report-call-live-updates-2024-10">strong third-quarter earnings</a> on Thursday. Its net sales for the quarter hit $158.9 billion, outperforming the consensus analyst estimate of $157.3 billion.Its sales in North America increased 9% year over year to $95.5 billion, while its sales internationally increased 12% year over year to $35.9 billion.Its net income increased to $15.3 billion — or $1.43 per diluted share — in Q3, compared with $9.9 billion, or $0.94 per diluted share, in the same period last year.Shortly after the results, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/amzn-stock">the company's stock</a> climbed more than 6% in volatile after-hours trading. Despite a 3.3% drop during regular trading on Thursday, the stock is still up about 23% so far in 2024.
