Amazon's Prime Big Deals might surprise you this October

Amazon is still gunning to get the remaining quarter on board.Prime Day is "an opportunity to allow non-Prime members to peer over the shoulder of their friends and family, see those deals, and wonder if they should sign up," said Jeremy Bartlow, a partner and consumer expert at PA Consulting."They use it as a massive volume booster, but also to start getting more and more scale each year with people who haven't jumped on the Prime bandwagon yet," Bartlow said.But that's just the gateway drug.Amazon's deals announced in the lead-up to Prime Day include access for members to three free months of delivery from the company's grocery operations, including Whole Foods and Amazon Fresh, for orders over $35 (the cost a month after the freebies run out is $9.99).Music fans can also get five months free of Amazon Music Unlimited (another $9.99 a month), three months of Kindle Unlimited ($11.99 a month, plus you need a Kindle e-reader, which retails for a minimum of $99.99), or three free months of Audible Premium Plus (plans start at $7.95 a month).Amazon is also offering steep discounts to Prime members on its own electronic devices. One version of its Ring video doorbell is on sale for $50, down from $100, while a 40-inch Fire TV is $170 — roughly one-third off its regular price.The strategy is all about getting customers to try new products in the Amazon world — and hopefully sticking with them by paying additional subscriptions on top of their Prime membership, Bartlow said.For example, "they sell their tablets so cheaply" to get people into Amazon's ecosystem. Plus, "many of them will have ads and a whole user interface that's optimized to push their digital content, which is very different than buying a tablet from another brand," he said. (The Amazon Fire HD 10 tablet is 46% off this Prime Day, down from $139.99 to $74.99.)Meantime, Amazon's Alexa-enabled devices and speakers might lead users to subscribe to Music Unlimited.For Amazon, those kinds of purchases are where the real money is."We sell a lot of devices during our Prime Day events," CFO Brian Olsavsky said on an earnings call after Prime Day 2022. "We don't make money on the device. We make money on the use of the device."Developing a complete offering of devices and services has been the goal of several Big Tech companies for years.Apple has created an ecosystem primarily thanks to its iPhone, for example, though parts of its strategy prompted <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-antitrust-lawsuit-justice-department-2024-3">an antitrust lawsuit</a> from the US Department of Justice earlier this year. Amazon really wants you to join the family this Prime Day

That's more than the worker has usually been able to claim in the past."I was basically booked up for an entire week, which really doesn't happen," the worker said."It seems they are making sure to get all of the regular stuff out in anticipation" of Prime Day, she added.The Flex worker, who made deliveries for Amazon during Prime Day in 2023, asked not to be identified by name, but Business Insider has verified her identity and work for Amazon.For many Amazon delivery workers, Prime Day has become one of the busiest times of the year. The 2024 version of the event, which will take place on July 16 and 17, promises to be no different: <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/deals/early-amazon-prime-day-deals">Amazon has already spent weeks promoting some discounts</a> and deals. It's promising new deals for shoppers every five minutes during the event itself.This year, Prime Day will also occur the same week as Alabama's tax-free weekend, a three-day period when shoppers can stock up on supplies for the new school year without paying sales tax.Amazon employs a few different kinds of delivery workers. Those who work through the company's Flex program are independent contractors using their own cars and are paid by the block. Making certain types of deliveries, such as grocery orders from Whole Foods, comes with the potential to earn tips.The Flex worker BI spoke with says she's seen more new faces at the Amazon facilities she frequents — a sign, she said, that Amazon is staffing up in advance of the banner shopping week."Prime Day, and then right around October, those are the two biggest times when they hire people because that's when everybody's shopping," the worker told BI, referencing the fall increase in hiring ahead of the holiday shopping season.One challenge for Flex workers is delivering all those packages within the time allotted for the block, the worker said.The worker recalled delivering about 30 packages per three-and-a-half-hour block earlier this year. Lately, though, the worker has noticed that number reaching closer to 40, especially during evening delivery shifts.And if you don't do it, "they'll just say you're unreliable, and you're gone," the worker said.Getting shifts with the best pay also requires a strategy, she said.During a normal week in her area, a three-and-a-half hour block of delivering packages pays $63, the driver told Business Insider. That rate can go above $80 if drivers wait until hours — or even minutes — before a shift, she said.But in the run-up to Prime Day, those higher offers come up sooner — even a full day before the shift, she said.Workers are also competing with the influx of new drivers around the event. Speaking to BI on the Thursday before Prime Day, the Flex driver said she still hadn't seen any blocks for next week, but she's ready to grab whatever shifts she can."Everything just hits bigger and quicker" around the shopping extravaganza, the driver told BI."The Amazon Flex program gives individuals the opportunity to set their own schedule and be their own boss, while earning competitive pay," Amazon spokesperson Branden Baribeau told BI."Amazon Flex delivery partners are able to work when they want – including on and around Prime Day – with the vast majority finishing their delivery blocks early," Baribeau said."When something like a delivery partner repeatedly not showing up for a scheduled block or not following our Terms of Service occurs, our team manually reviews each case to determine if eligibility to deliver with the Amazon Flex program should continue," Baribeau said in response to a question about when Amazon considers deactivating Flex workers.Baribeau said that Flex workers earn $26 per hour on average.Do you work for Amazon Flex, Whole Foods, Amazon Fresh, or another part of Amazon's retail operations and have a story idea to share? In fact, one big selling point of its $139-a-year Prime membership is free one-day shipping to customers' doors.But this year, Prime Day promotions are pointing shoppers toward the option of taking on some of the delivery work themselves by instead collecting packages from its growing network of lockers and other pick-up points.Prime members are "able to choose how and where those items arrive— whether at home, work, or places you frequent with Amazon's network of thousands of package pick-up locations," Amazon said last month as it <a target="_blank" href="https://press.aboutamazon.com/2024/6/amazons-10th-prime-day-event-returns-july-16-17-with-millions-of-exclusive-deals-for-prime-members">touted</a> the massive shopping event, which is scheduled for July 16 and 17.Amazon has been adding pick-up points in recent years. Its locker banks, for instance, are common sites in apartment lobbies, college dorms, convenience stores, and even <a target="_blank" href="https://mpdc.dc.gov/release/mpd-expands-amazon-lockers-program">police stations</a>. There are also staffed Amazon Counters at Whole Foods stores.An Amazon spokesperson said that Amazon offers "tens of thousands of package pick-up locations" in the U.S. The spokesperson also directed Business Insider to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.aboutamazon.com/news/operations/how-to-use-amazon-locker">a blog post</a> from last year, which says that items ordered for pick-up at lockers must be fulfilled by Amazon and weigh under 10 pounds, among other requirements.And while picking up parcels might seem contrary to Amazon Prime's noted quick-shipping benefits, it's could be useful both for the customer and for the company.If shoppers already go to Amazon's stores or other places with an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/tech/amazon-locker">Amazon locker</a>, it's quite convenient, said Jeremy Bartlow, a partner and consumer expert at PA Consulting."I know it's going to be sitting there in the locker on the way home or at the grocery store, wherever I'm stopping," Bartlow told BI.It's especially convenient to get an order delivered to a locker if you've had <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-hub-work">Amazon packages stolen</a> from your porch or apartment mailroom, or if you're ordering an expensive item and want the extra security.There's another reason why Amazon would love for you to pick up your Prime Day deals instead of delivering them to your front door: their bottom line.Amazon's annual spending on shipping has ballooned over the last few years, particularly as it ramped up its <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-one-day-shipping-promise-snag-2019-7">one-day and same-day shipping</a> operations.Amazon spent $89.5 billion on shipping in 2023 — an increase of roughly 7% over 2022, the company said in its <a target="_blank" href="https://d18rn0p25nwr6d.cloudfront.net/CIK-0001018724/c7c14359-36fa-40c3-b3ca-5bf7f3fa0b96.pdf">annual filing with the SEC.</a>That's despite offering options like "Amazon Day Delivery," where customers can choose to wait a few days if the order isn't urgent, and Amazon will try to put as many items in the same box as it can. (Amazon sometimes offers credits to customers who choose this option.)Delivering orders to a single pick-up point instead of going out on an hours-long route through suburbia saves time — and probably gas — compared with individual delivery.The cost of shipping back items that customers want to return is also steep for Amazon and other retailers — so steep, in fact, that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-walmart-and-target-let-customers-keep-some-returns-2021-1">Amazon may give you a refund and tell you to keep the product.</a>All of that has pushed Amazon to come up with new ways to get you to pick up or drop off stuff instead of relying on the company's delivery workers or third-party services like the U.S. Postal Service.Earlier this year, Amazon offered a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="c-link" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-fresh-offering-grocery-discounts-to-shoppers-returning-parcels-2024-6">discount at Amazon Fresh grocery stores</a> if patrons used one of the supermarkets to return something they bought on <a target="_blank" href="http://Amazon.com">Amazon.com</a>, for example. Prime Day, which results in a high volume of orders, is taking place July 16 and 17 this year.That rate represents the injuries that Amazon is legally required to report to the government. It's also already "more than double the industry average," the committee wrote."But this number does not tell the full story," the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.help.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/help_committee_amazon_interim_report.pdf">preliminary results</a> read. That represents an 8% increase from 2023, according to the data. The Flex drivers BI spoke with asked not to be named in this article, citing fear of having their accounts deactivated by Amazon.Prime Day has become a second holiday shopping season. This year, Amazon is promising new deals on its website every five minutes on July 16 and 17, while rival retailers like <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/walmart-plus-half-price-membership-promo-ahead-amazon-prime-day-2024-7">Walmart</a> and Target are hosting their own sales events.And, just like the holidays, all that extra buying requires more people to get purchases to you, the customer.Amazon relies on different kinds of workers to get you your orders. Amazon's delivery service partners, for instance, use Amazon-owned vans.Flex workers, meanwhile, are independent contractors who are paid per shift (or "block," as the workers call them) and use their own cars to work. On some deliveries, such as grocery orders from Whole Foods, they can earn tips.But like all independent contractors, Flex drivers can decide what kind of work they'd like to do. And for some, picking up dozens of packages and delivering them around busy cities or sprawling suburbs isn't worth the money.Earlier this month, on a Reddit page for Flex drivers, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.reddit.com/r/AmazonFlexDrivers/comments/1dwr37b/prime_day_what_should_i_expect_as_a_driver/">a poster</a> claiming to be a new driver for the program asked whether working during Prime Day meant better pay or more shifts to choose from.Some commenters pointed to a surge in new Flex drivers who joined the platform just before this year's Prime Day. In the past, lots of new drivers have meant that shifts with surge pricing — those for which Amazon pays drivers more — are rarer, the commenters said."Too many new drivers that drive down rates," one wrote.Another commenter offered practical advice for the new driver. "Bring TP just in case you have to pp and there's no bathroom/service," the commenter wrote, appearing to use an abbreviation for "toilet paper."Some <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-drivers-say-peeing-in-bottles-common-despite-company-denials-2021-3">Amazon delivery workers said they peed in bottles</a> as they faced pressure to complete their routes, BI reported in 2018."Amazon Flex delivery partners have the freedom to take breaks and run errands during their delivery window specified in-app," Branden Baribeau, an Amazon spokesperson, told BI. "We design delivery routes so that they are safe and can be comfortably completed within the estimated duration of the delivery block" using factors like distance and weather forecasts, he added.Baribeau told BI last week that Prime Day "gives individuals the opportunity to set their own schedule and be their own boss, while earning competitive pay."The Flex model has played a key role in expanding Amazon's delivery abilities, particularly when it comes to fast options like same-day delivery, said Dhruv Grewal, a professor of marketing at Babson College."This model gives them the ability to both increase speed and reduce the cost of both owning the merchandise, owning the infrastructure of warehousing and owning the distribution infrastructure of their own fleets or trucks," Grewal told BI.But one Flex driver in Washington state told BI that she's not planning to make any deliveries for Amazon this week.
