A <keyword id="6354904" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="tweet">tweet</keyword> started by Reditt that provoked a ‘back and forth’ between online retailers <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> and <keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword> got online <keyword id="6354632" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Social-media">social media</keyword> buzzing in India last week. Though Flipkart began its first tweet on a slightly edgy note, it ended the talk-back with grace. Flipkart‘s final tweet stopped with a promise to celebrate Amazon’s claim that ‘there’s bit of Amazon in every e-commerce company’. 
 No sooner had the banter ended, social media users in India went on a sharing and commenting spree about the exchange between two of India’s top online retailers. Consider the Twitter numbers. Flipkart’s tweet portraying the delivery package as a dustbin attracted 767 retweets and 356 favorites. Amazon’s response got 444 retweets and 315 favorites. Flipkart’s final ‘we’ll drink to that’ tweet had 100 RTs and 98 favorites. Numerous scraps on Facebook walls on the exchange too sprang up in no time. What’s more, the comments and opinions expressed on various social portals and sites by netizens stayed firmly in the approving charitable zone. In fact, most people seemed to have enjoyed the banter. Soon, the buzz on social media was picked up by mainstream media with the ToI and <keyword id="23268" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="outlook">Outlook</keyword> magazine running stories on the banter.

So are there lessons to be learnt from this exchange, at a time when social media dominates business and people’s lives? You bet. Here are the 5 key takeaways for business and brands from the Amazon-Flipkart tweet exchange – 
 
1. When social, go cordial: It’s good to remember what is social can also go viral. If and when it does, the content that goes around must be pleasant enough for people to form favorable impressions. Both Amazon and Flipkart using wit and grace in that order ensured they stayed firmly in the ‘likable’ zone. 
 
2. When social, keep it real: Business and brands must learn to cultivate a human face. It’s what makes them seem real to people, and also endears them to the public at large. One way to appear real is to talk (read, tweet) like a real person. If you look closely at the tweet exchanges between Reddit, Amazon, and Flipkart it seems like its people doing a back and forth with each other. The tweets don’t come across as <keyword id="6354839" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="marketing">marketing</keyword> messages; instead they show up as ‘real talk’ among ‘real people’, aka business firms. 
 
3. When in sight, time it right: On a web-enabled social platform, timing’s everything. You’ve heard how timing’s important in comedy; ditto on social media. When the gauntlet was thrown by Flipkart, Amazon reacted ‘real-time’, and that made all the difference. Waiting would have killed the story, and also the interest levels of netizens and social media users. 
 
4. If it’s a loss of face, withdraw with grace: Flipkart’s reference to a dustbin in its tweet was smartly countered by Amazon with its ‘there’s a bit of Amazon’ retort. How did Flipkart in turn react? It acknowledged the witty riposte and closed with a promise to ‘drink to that’. Now that’s both classy and graceful. The result was that nobody came out scarred. Though Amazon scored, Flipkart joined in with best wishes, and netizens lapped up the gesture. 
 
5. Social fun needn’t be zero-sum: Too many times businesses have believed rivalry to be a zero sum game. If one has to win, the other has to lose. Of course, Flipkart and Amazon are keen rivals, yet they’ve shown with this banter that it’s not always about winning at another’s expense. That it’s also about engaging a common audience that both firms target. In doing so, everyone emerges a winner. The audience is engaged, the category grows, and both firms benefit. 
There’s much business and brands can learn from what will now become part of e-commerce legend in India. Why only business, there’s much we can learn too.

<ul><li>The customer may bear the ultimate brunt of new regulations implemented by the Indian government on the e-commerce giants, <keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword> and <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword>. </li><li>One of the main perks of shopping online has been that items were generally more affordable, especially during the sales — which may not be the case anymore with the negation of deep discounts. </li><li>Products will no longer be ‘exclusive’ to any platform, potentially making it difficult for sellers to set up marketing budgets with the e-commerce companies. </li><li>There still may be one loophole that the companies can take advantage of, but the official statement is that they’re still evaluating what the new directives entail.</li></ul>E-commerce business have become a part our day-to-day lives. When you’re not in the mood to brave the holiday crowd — or maybe you’re just feeling lazy — online shopping offers an easy, not to mention efficient, reprieve. The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/indian-government-tightens-rules-e-tailers-like-flipkart-and-amazon-wont-be-allowed-to-sell-products-by-companies-they-back/articleshow/67266013.cms">new directives</a> issued by the Indian government aren’t just about how it’s going to affect Walmart’s bottom line after it’s expensive Flipkart acquisition or how either company is going to re-align its supply chain — it’s about how it’s going to affect your shopping experience come February 1, 2019, when the changes come into effect. Ultimately, it’s not the sellers or the e-commerce platforms that are going to bear the brunt. It’s going to be online shoppers, like you and me, who are now accustomed to deep discounts, who may end up paying the price — quite literally — at least in the short run. No more deep discounts Diwali, Holi and Christmas — even Republic Day and Independence Day — were joyous occasions with Flipkart (including its subsidiaries Jabong and Myntra) and Amazon offering huge discounts of up to 80%. Even the average rate of discounts leveled out is at somewhere around 60%. Those discounts may be not be around anymore. Until and unless the e-commerce giants can find a way around the new policy implemented by the Indian government, shopping online may not be as affordable. On the other hand, it’s also possible that a neutral marketplace could encourage more competition that could ultimately benefit the consumer. But online retail only accounts for 2.9% of all retail sales in India, so e-commerce penetration is pretty limited to begin with and not an immediate threat to traditional retail. No more ‘exclusive’ launches Initially you may think that it’s not a bad thing that products will be available on all platforms rather than just being a ‘Flipkart-exclusive’ or an ‘Amazon-exclusive’, but being exclusive is what played a big part in allowing products to bundle in special offers. For example, the ASUS Max Pro M2 is a ‘Flipkart exclusive’ phone and it’s able to offer Flipkart’s ‘Complete Mobile Protection’ at just ₹99, which is costs ₹999 otherwise. Being an exclusive vendor will Amazon and Flipkart has its own perks like asking for a commitment on their marketing budget allowing them price their product accordingly. That being said, the next Xiaomi or OnePlus launch is probably not going to be a Amazon or Flipkart ‘exclusive’. The business of affiliate companies So the main crux of the Indian government’s new policy is that ‘American companies are barred from selling products supplied by affiliate companies on their Indian shopping sites’. As a consumer, you’re hardly paying attention to the ownership of the company — if it talks like Amazon, walks like Amazon, then it’s probably Amazon. Unfortunately, that’s not quite the case. Under the law, these companies are barred from selling any products directly. That means they have to set up local companies to be able to sell all the products we see on the site — that includes everything from books, groceries to electronics — not just the Echo etc. Kishore Biyani, owner of the Future Group, <a href="https://www.ft.com/content/0c65e79e-0996-11e9-9fe8-acdb36967cfc">told local media</a> that a move like this would force the e-commerce companies to become ‘genuine marketplaces’. But, experts <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/26/technology/india-amazon-walmart-online-retail.html">argue</a> that it’s going to be the customer that’s ultimately going to suffer because traditional Indian sellers aren’t in a position to offer a customers an experience that’s at par with what e-commerce companies were able to accomplish. Some have even termed the new regulations as being ‘regressive’. But, there’s still a loophole. Flipkart and Amazon can still buy whatever they want to buy, and buy as much as they want to buy. Since they can’t sell to consumers — they can sell the products to their affiliates. Now, the affiliates can’t sell on the platform either — but they can sell to other companies, or directly to consumers in some way, at whatever price they want. The impact of the new regulations will only play out once the deadline of February 1, 2019 hits. As of now Amazon and Flipkart have stated that they’re still evaluating the new regulations. The Indian government seems to have a taken a turn from rolling out the red carpet for foreign investors, to pulling it out from under their feet — at the behest of protests put up by the local retailers. When talking about how Flipkart has a huge focus on the grocery segment, Kumar said, “We have a huge backing of our parent company which is best in grocery. Walmart’s business is 60-70% in food, so whenever Flipkart seeks the help, we can get the best practices.” However, Kumar is quick to add that, “Walmart really wants to ensure that the Flipkart DNA of entrepreneurial ability sustains. We call it the soft hug.” Amazon too calls itself ‘India’s Apni Dukaan’ Amazon founder Jeff Bezos had famously said, “Amazon is India’s apni dukaan’. Bezos’ gesture acknowledged India’s huge internet market where e-commerce still hasn’t seen its full potential, According to <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/business/india-business/amazon-india-gross-sales-to-hit-32bn-in-4-yrs-report/articleshow/70883574.cms">reports</a>, Amazon expects to have a 35% market share in India by 2023, with the Indian market making up for 4% of its total global sales. The number of online shoppers in India is expected to grow exponentially and both Amazon and Flipkart do not want the ‘outsider’ image to hamper their prospects. Flipkart wants to be an ‘Indian’ company even though Walmart owns it

But what is unbelievable is the vast margin they managed to achieve, setting them apart in a crowded e-commerce market. Amazon received 344 million hits while Flipkart and Myntra combined got 314 million visits in September. The third highest number of shoppers came to Snapdeal which got 87 million visits in the same month, according to a SimilarWeb report. Amazon and Flipkart individually had over twice the number of visits than that of Snapdeal, Club Factory, Shopclues, Tata Cliq and Paytm Mall combined, showed the data from the report.

 On an interesting note, Snapdeal scripted a comeback story as its numbers grew to current 87 million from 27 million visits in October 2017. “The growing volumes on Snapdeal are built on a sound and granular understanding of the importance of value in Bharat-focused e-commerce. Our ability to build scale along with favorable unit economics gives Snapdeal an immense competitive advantage,” said Kunal Bahl, CEO &amp; Co-founder, Snapdeal in a statement. Meanwhile, Amazon and Flipkart rode on the festive sale discounts that started in September. Flipkart’s Big Billion Day sale too started towards the end of September.

Amazon and one of its biggest competitor in India got into a funny Twitter spat 

New Delhi, Nov 20 () Trade associations observed "National Protest Day" on Wednesday and held protest dharnas against "unethical trade practices" of leading e-commerce firms like Amazon and Flipkart in over 700 cities across the country, CAIT said.
 The traders' body, which has been alleging that these e-commerce firms were adopting unethical trade practices and are openly violating the government's FDI policy, claimed the protests were attended by lakhs of traders.
 "The demonstrating traders said India's e-commerce market has been made highly toxic by Amazon and Flipkart with their unethical trade practices and open violation of the government's FDI policy," the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) said.
 According to the traders' body, the protestors demanded that the government impose an immediate ban on e-commerce portals of both Amazon and Flipkart.
 B C Bhartia, National President of CAIT said traders have no objection to Amazon and Flipkart conducting business in India, but like merchants, these e-commerce firms should also follow every provision of foreign direct investment (FDI) policy of the government and other tax laws.
 The traders' body demanded that Amazon and Flipkart be asked to shut their portals till the time these firms make their portals fully compliant with FDI policy and other laws.
 It has also sought a probe into the business model, accounts and inflow of foreign investment and its disbursal by both the companies. RSN DRR

Traders' body holds nation-wide protests; demands ban on Amazon, Flipkart

New Delhi, Dec 1 () Traders' body CAIT on Sunday lashed out at e-commerce majors Amazon and Flipkart, calling them "economic terrorists", and demanded that the government take action against them for alleged violation of FDI policy norms. 
 However, a Flipkart spokesperson vehemently denied the allegations and said the company operates through a marketplace model in India and is fully compliant with all the laws of the country, including all FDI regulations.
 "It is unfortunate that some fringe organisations with vested interests keep peddling their agenda," the Flipkart spokesperson said, adding that vested interests are against the entrepreneurial spirit that the government wants to kindle in the country to create jobs and support wealth and economic growth creators.
 A response could not be elicited from Amazon India. 
 The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) claimed that small retailers have suffered at the hands of Amazon, Flipkart and other e-commerce portals for the last one year, leading to decline in their business. 
 "These companies can easily be termed as economic terrorists and a major roadblock in making India a USD 5 trillion economy vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi," the traders' body said. 
 "We expect the government to take immediate action against Amazon and Flipkart and either they should follow the policy or wind up their business activities from India," it added. 
 Flipkart, on the other hand, said innovation and tech-driven digital commerce is central to India's dream of a USD 5 trillion dollar economy.
 It said e-commerce was enabling the success of MSMEs, kiranas, farmers and also creating new livelihood opportunities while supporting formalisation of the economy and bringing in more tax revenue to the exchequer. 
 "Over the last five years, we have created lakhs of new jobs through our deep investments in infrastructure and the seller ecosystem and have built several hundred path-breaking innovations through our technology and engineering team," the Flipkart spokesperson said. 
 CAIT alleged that an unholy cartel of e-commerce companies, brand owning companies and banks was involved in ensuring predatory pricing and deep discounting on e-commerce portals of Amazon and Flipkart, and demanded a comprehensive investigation against this nexus.

Earlier, sources told Reuters that Walmart may be able to strike the deal soon and was en route to spending $10-12 billion by the end of June for that. According to CNBC-TV18's report, Amazon has offered a breakup fee worth $2 billion to Flipkart. If successful, the deal would be the biggest Amazon has made in India so far. However, reports say that Flipkart had refused another offer made by Amazon two years ago. The company was trying to buy 51-55% of Flipkart at the time. While it is unclear how much Amazon's current bid is worth, it is expected to be on par with what Walmart is paying. Walmart had entered India back in 2007, through a joint venture with Bharti Enterprises. That's before Amazon made its entry into this market, Walmart's deal with Bharti was called off in 2013 when Amazon was well established in India. However, Walmart still owns 21 wholesale cash-and-carry supermarkets in India right now. Amazon, on the other hand, has been making waves in the country's <keyword id="35621" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="e-commerce">e-commerce</keyword> space, earning a significant market share.
