Airbnb's Indian business has grown over 115% in a year

Beyond <keyword id="19916613" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Paris" source="keywords">Paris</keyword>, Indian travellers are also exploring other locations in <keyword id="19899242" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="France" source="keywords">France</keyword> such as Nice, Aubervilliers, Colombes, and Saint-Ouen-sur-Seine, Airbnb said in a statement, citing data for bookings made by Indian guests between January 1, 2023, and March 31, 2024, for stays in and around the host cities during the period of the Olympic Games Paris 2024. <br /><br /> These areas, including key Olympic venues like Colombes (field hockey) and Chateauroux (shooting events), along with cities hosting <keyword id="64" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="football" source="Orion">football</keyword> matches like Saint-Etienne, Lyon, Nantes, Nice, and <keyword id="65651" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bordeaux" source="Orion">Bordeaux</keyword>, are experiencing significant interest, it added. <br /><br /> Airbnb said travellers from over 160 countries and regions have already booked their stays on its platform during the sporting event. The <keyword id="4833237" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Paris-Olympics" source="Orion">Paris Olympics</keyword> will be held from July 26 to August 11, 2024. <br /><br /> As of March 31, 2024, nights booked during the dates of the Olympics are over five times higher than they were in the Paris region the same time a year ago, it added. Not just this, the platform for homestay has contributed over $920 million to India’s Gross Domestic Product and supported over 85,000 Indian jobs over 12 months ending March 2023. The GDP contribution and jobs supported in India has more than doubled since 2019, the year before the COVID-19 pandemic struck resulting in lockdowns and international border restrictions.<br /><br />The report also highlighted the powerful multiplier effect Airbnb guest spending has within local communities. In 2022-23, Airbnb guests spent a total of $815 million in India in areas like purchases on transportation, restaurants, retail stores, and retail stores. The spending has more than doubled from 2019 levels.<br /><br />In India, Airbnb’s presence was the highest in <keyword id="826" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="goa" source="Orion">Goa</keyword>, where Airbnb guests spending amounted to almost $190 million, this was followed by Bangalore and Delhi, Mumbai and Manali.<br /><br />It details the significant contribution made by Airbnb guests to domestic tourism across the nation. Indians booking Airbnb for international visits doubled in Q1 2023; UK, US & Europe top destinations

<ul><li>In August 2020, <keyword id="719382" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Airbnb">Airbnb</keyword> had confidentially filed the S1 document for an IPO, which marks the initial registration for a company planning to go public.</li><li>The 12-year old startup’s valuation has dropped from $31 billion to $18 billion as the COVID-19 crisis battered the global travel and tourism industry. </li><li>Chesky said the company is getting back on track with the markets recovering, and people opting for ‘longer stays’.</li></ul>For Airbnb, the US-based vacation rental startup, it's been a year of ups and downs. It started with talks of being the next tech company to file an IPO. Now, the travel and tourism industry is battered due to the coronavirus pandemic and its valuation has dropped from $31 billion to $18 billion. In August 2020, Airbnb had <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/airbnb-confidentially-filed-for-an-ipo/articleshow/77644745.cms">confidentially filed for an IPO</a>.<br /><br />Speaking during the Economic Times Global Business Summit, <keyword id="1757034" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Brian-Chesky">Brian Chesky</keyword>, CEO of Airbnb, said that while he’s not allowed to talk about the IPO, he said they will go ahead when the market’s ready. <br /><br />“Before the pandemic hit, we were working on the S1 (filing), we were intending to file it. Then obviously COVID-19 happened and the business dropped precipitously and we put the S1 on the shelf. And we dusted it off and filed it and I’ve said it, when the market’s ready for Airbnb, Airbnb will go public,” said Chesky.<br /><br />Airbnb was one of the worst-hit companies during the pandemic. According to <a href="https://www.wired.co.uk/article/airbnb-coronavirus-losses">reports</a>, the company’s revenues nosedived in March, and it lost over $1 billion in bookings. <br /><br />However, the company is getting back on track with the markets recovering, and people opting for ‘longer stays’, booking homes through Airbnb has been the more viable option, Chesky said. <br /><br /><div type="image" title="Airbnb spending." msid="78277984" hostid="261"></div><br /><strong>Airbnb in India<br /></strong><br />As of 2019, Airbnb had over 55,000 listings in India. In 2019, Airbnb had invested an undisclosed amount on its Indian rival OYO, although <a href="https://www.businesstoday.in/current/corporate/airbnb-in-talks-to-invest-100-200-million-in-oyo-report/story/329283.html">reports </a>had pegged the investment to be anywhere between $100-$200 million.  “I think to invest in the Indian market is to be making a long-term investment in what is and will be one of the largest economies in the world," he added.<br /><br />Talking about the Indian market, Chesky said that it is an important hub for Airbnb. The company had also recently promoted its India head Amanpreet Bajaj to also lead Southeast Asia, Hong Kong and Taiwan markets. <br /><br />“Through our office in India and our subsidiary, we have a large number of people that work in India.
