CNBC's Mandy Drury Is Short

<p>CNBC anchor Mandy Drury, who is an Australian native and a former Great Barrier Reef lifeguard, <a href="http://www.cnbc.com/id/100899360?__source=yahoo%7Cfinance%7Cheadline%7Cheadline%7Cstory&amp;par=yahoo&amp;doc=100899360%7CForget%20SharkNado:%20How%20to">gave tips on how to not get eaten by a shark</a> in a new video posted on CNBC.com.</p>
<p>This is an important life hack, so pay attention.</p>
<p>Here they are: Don't wear "yummy yellow" and don't play with a dog, she says. </p>
<p>"Don't wear yummy yellow because <keyword id="6785521" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="sharks">sharks</keyword> have very bad vision, but they can spot yellow and orange. So we're always told don't wear yummy yellow. Don't play with a dog before going in the water because dogs have a much stronger smell and that smell rubs off on you and sharks can detect that much further away."</p>
<p>Drury says she likes to wear dark blue, green or black when it comes to her swimsuit.</p>

CNBC Anchor Mandy Drury's 'Star Trek' Dress

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The names of the 10 victims in the <keyword id="13948870" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="buffalo-mass-shooting" source="Orion">Buffalo mass shooting</keyword> have been released.</li><li>There were also three surviving victims, two of whom were treated and released from the hospital. </li></ul><p>The names and ages of the 10 victims of the Buffalo, New York, mass shooting have been released.</p><p>The victims were identified by police as 32-year-old Roberta A. Drury, 52-year-old Margus D. Morrison, 53-year-old Andre Mackneil, 55-year-old Aaron Salter Jr., 62-year-old Geraldine Talley, 65-year-old Celestine Chaney, 67-year-old Heyward Patterson, 72-year-old Katherine Massey, 77-year-old Pearl Young, and 86-year-old Ruth Whitfield, <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2022/05/16/buffalo-shooting-live-updates/">according to The Washington Post</a>.</p><p>The list includes a <a href="https://www.insider.com/buffalo-shooting-security-guard-hailed-as-hero-2022-5">retired police officer,</a> a <a href="https://www.insider.com/son-buffalo-shooting-victim-speaks-out-calls-incident-a-tragedy-2022-5">mother who was shopping for strawberry shortcakes</a>, and a civil rights leader who last year <a href="https://buffalonews.com/opinion/letters/letter-federal-legislation-must-address-gun-issue/article_e54506ce-be3b-11eb-83f4-038613ca28dd.html">wrote a letter to her local paper, the Buffalo News,</a> calling for stronger gun control policies.</p><p>There were also three surviving victims of the shooting, identified by <a href="https://twitter.com/ChrisHorvatits4/status/1525987822141952001">WIVB-TV reporter Chris Horvatits</a> as 20-year-old Zaire Goodman, 50-year-old Jennifer Warrington, and 55-year-old Christopher Braden.</p><p>Goodman and Warrington have been released from the hospital, Horvatits reported.</p><p>Police identified Saturday's shooting suspect as an 18-year-old white man. Officials said he traveled hours to reach the predominately Black community before opening fire inside the Tops grocery store.</p><p>Officials called the shooting a <a href="https://www.insider.com/upstate-new-york-tops-supermarket-mass-shooting-injuries-fatalities-police-2022-5">"racially motivated hate crime"</a> during a weekend press conference.</p><p>The shooting suspect was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. He has pleaded not guilty.</p><h2>Aaron Salter Jr., 55, of Lockport, New York</h2><p>A 30-year veteran of the Buffalo Police Department, identified by authorities as Aaron Salter Jr., was working as a security guard at Tops when the suspect opened fire in the store. </p><p>Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia told reporters Saturday that Salter opened fire on the suspect but because of the shooter's heavy body armor, none of Salter's bullets affected him. </p><p>"The suspect engaged our retired officer and he was ultimately shot and deceased at the scene," Gramaglia said. </p><p>Gramaglia added that Salter is "a hero in our eyes." </p><h2>Kat Massey, 72, of Buffalo</h2><p>Civil rights leader Kat Massey was also identified as one of the victims of the <keyword id="13938559" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="buffalo-shooting" source="Orion">Buffalo shooting</keyword>. Just last year, Massey penned a letter to her local newspaper calling for stricter gun laws. </p><p>"There needs to be extensive federal action/legislation to address all aspects of the issue," <a href="https://buffalonews.com/opinion/letters/letter-federal-legislation-must-address-gun-issue/article_e54506ce-be3b-11eb-83f4-038613ca28dd.html">Massey wrote to The Buffalo News</a>. </p><p>"Current pursued remedies mainly inspired by mass killings – namely, universal background checks and banning assault weapons – essentially exclude the sources of our city's gun problems. Illegal handguns, via out of state gun trafficking, are the primary culprits," she continued. </p><h2>Celestine "Stiney" Chaney, 65, of Buffalo</h2><p>Wayne Jones <a href="https://www.insider.com/son-buffalo-shooting-victim-speaks-out-calls-incident-a-tragedy-2022-5">told Insider</a> he always made it a point to join his mother on her trips to the supermarket, but on Saturday, he opted out because he was recovering from knee surgery.</p><p>Instead, his mother, Celestine "Stiney" Chaney, was joined by Jones' aunt. The pair were shopping for Jones' favorite treat — strawberry shortcakes — when a gunman opened fire in the grocery store. </p><p>"We went grocery shopping, that was what we did. As she got older, I'd take her grocery shopping," Jones told Insider. "It's ironic that the one time we didn't go together, there's a tragedy."</p><p>Jones' aunt was able to hide in a freezer during the shooting, but was split up from Chaney. </p><h2>Ruth Whitfield, 86, of Buffalo</h2><p>Whitfield was a mother of four and her husband's primary caretaker, according to <a href="https://buffalonews.com/news/local/tops-shooting-victim-ruth-whitfield-devoted-her-life-to-her-family/article_4c6a025c-d3f1-11ec-8335-d35776f83d6d.html">The Buffalo News.</a></p><p>"My mom was the consummate mom. My mother was a mother to the motherless. She was a blessing to all of us. She loved God and taught us to do the same thing," retired Buffalo Fire Commissioner Garnell W. Whitfield told the outlet. </p><p>Whitfield was on her way home from visiting her 88-year-old husband in a nursing home when she stopped at Tops to get something to eat, <a href="https://www.wgrz.com/article/news/crime/what-we-know-tops-shooting-victims-buffalo-mass-shooting/71-30ad7b83-6732-4780-8f0d-ce6d5f656752">WGRZ</a> reported. She was the oldest victim killed in the shooting.</p><p>Whitfield's son told reporters that his mother remained fervently devoted to her husband after he entered a nursing home eight years ago. </p><p>"She went there every day. She took care of our dad as she'd done her whole married life. She brought him clean clothes, clipped his nails, shaved him, cut his hair. She did everything," Garnell W. Whitfield said.</p><h2>Pearl Young, 77, of Buffalo</h2><p>Young, a native of Alabama, is remembered as a 'Godly woman,' her loved ones told <a href="https://www.al.com/news/birmingham/2022/05/buffalo-supermarket-shooting-77-year-old-alabama-native-killed-in-tops-massacre-was-a-godly-woman.html">AL.com.</a> Young worked as a substitute teacher and ran a food pantry in the Central Park neighborhood for 25 years, according to the outlet. </p><p id="M7E5F7J4HBFXLLV75KR5QB75ZU">"She was beautiful inside and out," Jacqueline Wright, Young's niece said. "This was devastating."</p><p>Young was a mother to three adult children and had several grandchildren. She moved to New York as a young woman and married a pastor there, AL.com reported. </p><p>She was grocery shopping on Saturday after getting lunch with her sister-in-law, according to the outlet. </p><h2>Roberta Drury, 32, of Buffalo </h2><p>Drury was a "bright light in the world, always laughing and smiling," according to a <a href="https://www.facebook.com/The-Dalmatia-Hotel-110382944603215">Facebook post</a> from The Dalmatia Hotel, a bar where she worked.</p><p>Originally from Syracuse, Drury moved to Buffalo to help her brother recover from a bone marrow transplant, her sister, Amanda Drury, told <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/us/victims-tops-grocery-store-shooting-buffalo-new-york-2022-05-15/">Reuters</a>.</p><p>"She was vibrant and outgoing, could talk to anyone," Amanda told the outlet.</p><h2>Heyward Patterson, 68, of Buffalo </h2><p>Patterson was a regular at Tops, his grandniece, Teniqua Clark, told <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/05/14/nyregion/victims-buffalo-shooting.html?name=styln-buffalo-shooting&amp;region=TOP_BANNER&amp;block=storyline_menu_recirc&amp;action=click&amp;pgtype=LegacyCollection&amp;variant=show&amp;is_new=false">The New York Times.</a> Patterson would drive people to and from the grocery store for less than the cost of a cab, Clark said.</p><p>Transporting community members at a discounted rate helped Clark support his three children, according to the outlet.</p><p>Patterson was helping someone load groceries into a car when he was killed, his niece said. "He didn't even have a chance to run," Clark told The Times.</p><p>Patterson served as a deacon at his church and worked in a soup kitchen, <a href="https://buffalonews.com/news/local/heyward-patterson-remembered-as-a-good-man-who-helped-because-he-wanted-to/article_bb08c4e6-d482-11ec-b625-9f2081a24a4c.html#tracking-source=home-top-story">the Buffalo News</a> reported. </p><p>"He would give the shirt off his back," Patterson's former wife, Tirzah Patterson told the outlet. "That's who he is. He wouldn't hurt anybody. Whatever he had, he'd give it to you. You ask, he'll give it. If he don't got it, he'll make a way to get it or send you to the person that can give it to you. He's going to be missed a lot."</p><h2>Andre Mackneil, 53, of Auburn, New York</h2><p>Mackneil, of Auburn, New York, was visiting family in Buffalo, according to <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2022/05/15/buffalo-shooting-victims-identified/9786195002/">USA Today.</a></p><p>Clarissa Alston-McCutcheon, a cousin of Mackneil, told the outlet that he was in the store picking up a surprise birthday cake for his grandson when the shooting took place. </p><p>"He never came out with the cake," Alston-McCutcheon said, describing Mackneil as "just a loving and caring guy – loved family, was always there for his family."</p><h2>Geraldine Talley, 62, of Buffalo</h2><p>Talley was beloved by her close-knit family. Talley was one of nine siblings, as well as "an amazing sister, mother, aunt," her sister, Kaye Chapman-Johnson, <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/US/shoppers-regulars-retired-police-officer-victims-buffalo-shooting/story?id=84731033">told ABC News</a>.</p><p>"Our sister, we had so many plans together, so many plans, and everything has just been stripped away from us," Chapman-Johnson told the outlet.</p><p>A longtime executive assistant, Talley also loved to make cheesecake, her niece, Kesha Chapman, told <a href="https://people.com/crime/buffalo-mass-shooting-10-dead-tops-friendly-markets-victims/">People</a>.</p><p>"She was always smiling. She didn't like confrontation. She wanted everything to be easy and full of love," Chapman said.</p><h2>Margus Morrison, 52, of Buffalo</h2><p>Morrison was a father of three and also had a stepdaughter. Sandra Demps, his stepdaughter, told <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2022/05/15/us/buffalo-shooting-victims-what-we-know/index.html">CNN</a> that Morrison was a "hero" who helped care for her disabled mother.</p><p>Demps told the outlet that Morrison and her mother had weekly movie nights and he was at the store on Saturday to buy snacks for their next one. Demps said her stepdad was a music lover who also collected sneakers.</p><p>Morrison also worked as a school bus monitor, taking care of children with special needs on the bus.</p><p>"Kids loved him on the bus. He loved the kids," Demps said. "It's a very big loss to the community."</p>

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><ul><li><strong>Journalists at the Trump-Kim summit in Singapore were given free USB-powered fans as a gift.</strong></li><li><strong>Security experts say that anyone who plugs it in is at risk of getting hacked.&#xa0;</strong></li></ul><p>Journalists covering the summit between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim-Jong Un in Singapore were given a fun gift bag that included&#xa0;a water bottle, a trial to The Straits Times newspaper, and a tourism guide to the island where it's taking place.</p><p>It also included a tiny fan that plugs into a mini-USB port or iPhone lightning port for power, according to tweets from the historic event.</p><p>It could be a nice gesture from the hosts. As Dutch journalist Harald Doornbos wrote in a tweet about the fan, "it is pretty hot here in Singapore," according to <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-43128073">a translation from the BBC</a>.&#xa0;</p><p>But security experts around the web warned that the fan might not just be a way to stay cool. It could be a trojan horse designed to steal data from any journalist who plugged the fan into their USB drive.</p><p>Anything that plugs into a USB port is potentially a way for an attacker to get malicious software onto your computer. It's how the notorious Stuxnet worm <a href="https://www.wired.com/2014/11/countdown-to-zero-day-stuxnet/">infected its targets,</a>&#xa0;and many big companies worried about information security forbid their employees from plugging anything into a USB port.&#xa0;&#xa0;</p><p>Twitter exploded with security experts telling journalists not to plug the fan in. It could install keylogger software, or hack their email, they warned:&#xa0;</p><p>North Korea has become a hacking superpower in recent years, <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/how-north-koreas-hackers-became-dangerously-good-1524150416">according to The Wall Street Journal</a>. The country has been linked to attacks like the "<a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-40297493">Wannacry</a>" ransomware. But North Korea has denied responsibility for the fan, <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-43128073">according to the BBC</a>.</p><p>Of course, the USB fan could just be that - a way to stay cool at a hot summit. <p>Growing up in Madison, Wisc., Ranku CEO Kim Taylor became a force to be reckoned with on the dance floor, the beams, and the ice.  As a girl, she loved dancing and she loved ice hockey. <span style="line-height: 1.5em; color: #222222; font-size: 15px;">By age of seven, that</span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> passion for dancing ultimately led to an interest in gymnastics. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">That mix of school and sports has been a theme throughout Taylor's life, right up to her current project: Ranku is a tech <keyword id="138263" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="startup">startup</keyword> that helps students discover and rank online college degree programs. It's backed</span> with $500,000 by <keyword id="219358" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Mark-Cuban">Mark Cuban</keyword>, the tech investor who is perhaps best-known as the owner of the Dallas Mavericks.</p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Taylor became a very competitive gymnast thanks to the help of her coach, Chellsie Marie Memmel. Memmel was a member of the U.S.'s 2008 Olympic women's gymnastics team. </span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em; color: #222222; font-size: 15px;">"I was a very serious gymnast," Taylor tells Business Insider. "That was my whole life. I also just really liked sports. </span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">I was kind of very well known (for the beam). No one could ever beat me at a handstand contest." </span></p>
<p>But since her brothers were ice hockey players, Taylor decided to take up ice hockey while continuing to excel at gymnastics. She joined her high school's boys hockey team as well as a private girls hockey team.</p>
<p>Also on that girls' team was Ranku co-founder Cecilia Retelle, <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">the now-former senior director of education policy at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. When their team went to the national championship, Retelle and Taylor bunked together and have been friends ever since. </span></p>
<h2>The college years and dancing in the NBA</h2>
<p>Once she entered college, Taylor snagged a spot as an NBA dancer for the Milwaukee Bucks. That year, the team ended up going to the eastern conference finals. </p>
<p>But that was her first and last year as an NBA dancer. That's because she realized she wanted to be a sports writer or broadcaster.</p>
<p>After her first year of college, Taylor stopped dancing for the NBA, and transferred from a small Jesuit school in Wisconsin to Arizona State University, to study journalism. </p>
<p>While at ASU, Taylor wrote for The Arizona Republic where she mostly covered football. Her coverage involved a lot of statistics, and that's when she fell in love with research. Research, she says, is most of what drives her online education startup today. </p>
<p>Given that she essentially grew up in the boys locker room both as an athlete and sports writer, Taylor says, it was good training for the male-dominated tech world.</p>
<p>After college, Taylor switched from the editorial side to advertising. Around 2008, Taylor was working for an online publisher in Chicago where she focused on online education. </p>
<p>At the time, Taylor says, for-profit institutions were exploding because newly unemployed people saw schools as a safe haven, an alternative to an unstable workforce.</p>
<p>"I knew it was a big industry, but no one in Chicago appreciated it," Taylor says. "So I started thinking that I should look at startups, but I knew nothing about startups."</p>
<p>So she came up with a checklist. Taylor wanted to join an early-stage startup with no revenue, and no capital.</p>
<p>"I wanted to run revenue," Taylor says. </p>
<p>And that's what she ultimately did.</p>
<h2>Starring on Bravo's "Start-Ups: Silicon Valley" reality TV show</h2>

<p>Taylor came to Silicon Valley as the fifth employee at a startup that builds Facebook ads for brands. </p>
<p>She joined contingent on fact that they would let her do things her way, she says.</p>
<p>"They didn't know how to make money and had zero contacts," Taylor says. </p>
<p>Within her first year at the company, Taylor demonstrated how to reach $1 million in revenue.</p>
<p>Along the way, Taylor found out about Bravo's new reality TV show "Start-Ups: Silicon Valley."</p>
<p>"It sounded like a complete joke," Taylor says. "I just wanted to see if I could get on it."</p>
<p>So she bypassed the standard application process and sent the producers a well-crafted email instead. <span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Two days later, she was invited to join the show.</span></p>
<p>The show received negative feedback from the moment the first episode aired. People criticized it for not depicting an accurate, authentic view of life in Silicon Valley.</p>
<p>A few episodes into the season, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/kim-taylor-bravo-startups-silicon-valley-quit-job-to-start-shonova-2012-11">we found out that Taylor had decided to leave the Facebook ads company</a> to start a new fashion startup called Shonova.</p>
<p>By the time she left, she was bringing in $3 million a month in revenue. She would've stayed, Taylor says, but the startup's executives wouldn't give her a VP title. </p>
<p>She told them, "If you don't give me my title or give me a raise, I'm out." As Taylor reflects back on what happened, she wonders if the CEO thought she was kidding. She wasn't. </p>
<p>"I think a lot of women get held back in their careers," Taylor says. "I was held back. They didn't want to give me a title. They didn't want to push me forward. I always knew I was capable of more."</p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">The show got canceled before the end of the first season, but Taylor has no regrets.  </span></p>
<p>"It was an amazing thing for me," Taylor says. "Anything is what you will make of it."</p>
<p>Though, she's not sure if she could say the same for some of the other cast members. She didn't specifically mention these examples, but the season featured <a href="http://www.mercurynews.com/ci_22172376/start-ups-silicon-valley-recap-booty-call-leads">plenty of drama</a>,  <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/startups-silicon-valley-half-million-dollars-2012-12" target="_blank">a strap-on sex toy</a>, and other bizarre moments involving some of the other cast members.</p>
<h2>From Silicon Valley to Silicon Alley</h2>

<p>Just a few weeks out from launching fashion startup Shonova, Taylor pulled the plug. Her real passion had always been in education, so she decided to pursue Ranku, the online education startup that she had first started thinking about back in Chicago.</p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Even though the application deadline had passed for the new Kaplan Education accelerator powered by TechStars in New York, the program</span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> said it would make an exception for her if she could get a team together. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Within two weeks, Taylor convinced Retelle, her childhood friend and former ice hockey teammate, to quit her lucrative job as the senior director of education policy at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to join Ranku as a co-founder. Taylor also brought on board an engineer and user interface designer, and convinced her brother to help out, too.</span></p>
<p>With a team intact, she received her term sheet for a $20,000 investment in Ranku. </p>
<p>Ranku wants to become a destination for people to find the best online degree program from top-notch universities. <span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">For Ranku, the "best" school isn't necessarily the one with the highest ranking on the "U.S. News and World Report" list. Instead, the best schools in Ranku's lists are the ones that give students great job outcomes.</span></p>
<p>The three-month accelerator program started this past June. A couple of days before Demo Day, where each startup pitches to an audience of investors, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/mark-cuban-leading-rankus-seed-round-2013-9" target="_blank">Ranku announced that Mark Cuban would be leading a $500,000 seed round in the startup</a>. </p>
<p>"Mark was coming to town to do press for Shark Tank," Taylor says. "He pinged me and asked how my startup was doing. I said, 'cranking' and he asked me to meet. I knew he wanted me to pitch."</p>
<p>Aiming to find a place to go where people wouldn't want to talk to Cuban, Taylor scheduled a meeting at her favorite Green Bay Packers bar (Cuban is a diehard Pittsburgh Steelers fan). </p>
<p>"No one bothered him," Taylor says. "No one said anything."</p>
<p>So she gave him the high-level pitch, but after a few minutes Cuban interrupts her.</p>
<p>"Kim, stop talking," he said. "I'm in." </p>
<p>Ranku <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/kim-taylors-startup-ranku-2013-6">launched just three months ago</a>, but it's already cash-flow positive. Going forward, Ranku wants to solve some of the biggest, most complicated issues in education and close the skills gap.</p>
<p>"It's something that needs to be solved in the private sector," Taylor says. "That's how I see it. We start here. This is the logical starting point for online education. New rules are being written. There are no rules about what makes a great versus a terrible online school. No one even understands if and why they're good. We want to champion idea of measuring the quality of schools by output."</p>
<p>It goes in line with <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/colleges-that-will-benefit-form-obamas-education-plan-2013-8">what President Barack Obama wants for our education system</a>, Taylor says. The only difference is that Taylor and her co-founder Retelle plan to have that done by next quarter.</p>
