Public filings, however, show that Facebook is still actively preparing for a launch. Facebook's experiments with orbital technology are intended as a way to help provide internet access to parts of the world with poor connectivity. It's part of its mission to <a href="https://www.facebook.com/notes/mark-zuckerberg/bringing-the-world-closer-together/10154944663901634/">"bring the world closer together"</a> - or in more concrete terms, to expand the total potential market for its services and fuel its future growth and profits. The plans indicate that despite Facebook's years of bruising scandals, its bold, extraterrestrial ambitions remain undimmed. The satellite that's planned for launch is experimental, and only the first step in a broader project to create a network of satellites dedicated to providing people around the world with internet access. If successful, it could portend a future fleet of thousands of Facebook-owned satellites, to rival the likes of Elon Musk's SpaceX or OneWeb.<h2>Facebook has planned to go to space for years - but there have been delays</h2>Facebook's satellite plans have faced repeated hiccups. In September 2016, Facebook contracted with Elon Musk-helmed space firm SpaceX to launch a satellite, <a href="https://time.com/4476416/mark-zuckerberg-elon-musk-rocket-explosion-satellite/">but the rocket exploded on the launchpad before takeoff</a>. The company has also been working on efforts to build low-Earth-orbit (LEO) satellites - distinct from the failed <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amos-6">geosynchronous transfer orbit satellite</a> that exploded - since at least 2016, under the codename Athena, <a href="https://spectrum.ieee.org/tech-talk/aerospace/satellites/facebook-may-have-secret-plans-to-launch-a-internet-satellite">sleuthing from IEEE Spectrum in May 2018 found</a> and <a href="https://www.wired.com/story/facebook-confirms-its-working-on-new-internet-satellite/">emails obtained by Wired in July 2018 confirmed</a>. This Athena LEO project has been run through a shell company called PointView Tech LLC, disguising Facebook's involvement. <a href="https://apps.fcc.gov/els/GetAtt.html?id=231563&amp;x=">In an application submitted to the FCC in April 2018</a>, lawyers for PointView Tech said that Athena would test new communications tech to "determine whether such satellite communications can effectively provide broadband to unserved and underserved areas throughout the world." It was at that time aiming for a launch "in early 2019" - but that didn't happen. A spokesperson for Space Systems Loral, the company that built the satellite for Facebook, confirmed to Business Insider that the planned 2019 launch never took place.Facebook declined to provide information about launch plans and sent Business Insider the following statment:"While we have nothing to share about specific projects at this time, we believe satellite technology will be an important enabler of the next generation of broadband infrastructure, making it possible to bring broadband connectivity to rural regions where internet connectivity is lacking or non-existent."<h2>Documents indicate Facebook is still preparing to launch, and it could be as soon as March 2020</h2>Despite the various delays and setbacks, Facebook remains committed to the satellite project, as evidenced by <a href="https://apps.fcc.gov/els/GetAtt.html?id=243115&amp;x=.">documents that lawyers for PointView tech filed with the FCC in December 2019</a>. They show that Facebook was requesting to modify its "experimental authorization" license, to add <a href="https://apps.fcc.gov/els/GetAtt.html?id=243116&amp;x=.">additional Earth stations (in Norway and Antarctica)</a> for the satellite to communicate with, indicating that the firm is still making quiet preparations for an anticipated launch. So why the delay? The problem appears to be issues with Vega, the type of rocket intended to ferry Athena into space. Vega is developed by Arianespace, a French firm, and in July 2019 <a href="https://spacenews.com/arianespace-aims-to-return-vega-to-flight-in-early-2020-after-investigation-pins-july-failure-on-rockets-second-stage/">suffered a launch failure that caused $415 million worth of damage</a>. Vega rocket launches were put on hold for the rest of the year, but the company is now preparing again for launches in 2020.We don't know the Athena launch date for sure - but one seemingly likely possibility is that Facebook's satellite will launch on a proof-of-concept Small Spacecraft Mission Service (SSMS) flight that will include 42 different satellite payloads from varying companies.A spokesperson for Arianespace declined to share the full manifest for the rocket, but <a href="https://www.arianespace.com/press-release/spire-selects-arianespace/">other</a> <a href="https://www.arianespace.com/press-release/arianespace-to-launch-the-esail-satellite-for-exactearth-on-vegas-ssms-poc-flight/">confirmed</a> <a href="https://www.arianespace.com/press-release/arianespace-to-launch-the-esail-satellite-for-exactearth-on-vegas-ssms-poc-flight/">payloads</a> <a href="https://www.arianespace.com/press-release/arianespace-to-launch-the-first-striving-small-satellite-for-sitael-on-vegas-ssms-poc-flight/">for</a> <a href="https://www.arianespace.com/press-release/arianespace-and-d-orbit-sign-contract-to-launch-ion-cubesat-carrier-on-vega-ssms-poc-flight/">the</a> SSMS flight have similar low-Earth, sun-synchronous orbits to Athena of around 500km, and similar weights in the roughly 100kg range. The SSMS launch was also originally <a href="https://twitter.com/arianespaceceo/status/1002192020927066112">planned to launch in early 2019</a> but was delayed, like we know Facebook's Athena launch was. The Arianespace spokesperson said this delay was due to the issues Vega had that year, and it is now scheduled for a 2020 launch, which will have the same manifest as was planned for last year.In a press release issued in January 2020, Arianespace said that the SSMS Vega flight may launch "as early as March," and <a href="https://www.rocketlaunch.live/?filter=arianespace">an unofficial online calendar compiled by RocketLaunch.Live</a> has the launch date down as March 23, 2020. (It's not clear what the source of the site's info is, and an Arianespace spokesperson did not respond to a request for clarification on the launch date.)In short: Facebook could entering the final frontier in a little over a month.<h2>Facebook Connectivity is experimenting with a bunch of different options</h2>Facebook's Connectivity unit has explored numerous different ways to improve internet access, though not without some roadbumps.<a href="https://connectivity.fb.com/">Current (publcily disclosed) projects include</a> Terragraph, a service for providing internet in urban environments; Free Basics, a service to provide free, limited internet connectivity in some markets; and the Telecom Infra Project, a collaboration with hundreds of other organisations in the telecoms industry to develop new tech. One of its most high-profile effort was Aquila, a project to build huge, solar-powered drones that could beam wireless internet down to the ground, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/aquila-facebook-scraps-plans-build-its-own-internet-drones-2018-6">but it was marred by issues and Facebook ultimately ended its attempts to build the aircraft</a>. (<a href="https://connectivity.fb.com/high-altitude-connectivity/">It continues to work on high-altitude platform station (HAPS) tech</a>, which is fitted on such aircraft, however.)In 2016, Facebook wrote to the FCC about its Connectivity plans, spelling out this multi-strand approach: "Connecting the unconnected will require a wide variety of technical solutions. For example, in dense urban areas, wireless terrestrial systems can efficiently serve end users and support backhaul links. In less dense areas, such as rural areas, where broadband infrastructure must be deployed over wide areas, using high altitude solar-powered aircraft to provide backhaul-type links to terrestrial aggregation points may be part of the optimal solution.It added: "And, in remote, sparsely populated areas, where there are significant gaps in infrastructure and the economic barriers of installing that infrastructure are considerably higher, satellite services may provide the most efficient means to connect."<a href="http://sslmda.com/html/recent_launches.php"></a>For now, there's just one experimental Athena satellite, and it will have a working life of just two years. <a href="https://spectrum.ieee.org/tech-talk/aerospace/satellites/facebook-may-have-secret-plans-to-launch-a-internet-satellite">IEEE Spectrum pointed out in May 2018</a> that for it to be functionally useful for ordinary people's connectivity needs, it will need to launch thousands.Do you work at Facebook Got a tip? For me, I've taken to learning the ins and outs of my <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-fitness-tracker" target="_blank" rel="noopener">fitness trackers</a> and, more specifically, how I can truly put everything it offers to use. I've long worn a fitness tracker as a daily watch, using it to record my bike rides, hikes, or any other sort of outdoor physical activity. But what I found myself primarily using it for was to tell time — which doesn't do much for getting the most out of the wearable or myself. So, I decided to change that. But instead of just paying more attention to the stats they already churn out, I started at square one with both. This meant first entering my age, weight, and other fitness data into each watch's companion app to create my new profile.Now, as they track my workouts, steps, and flights of stairs climbed, the amassed data isn't just dumped into a general well of information — I instead have somewhat of an accurate representation of my daily activity. I've also taken to syncing my heart rate monitors, bike cadence sensors, and Wahoo Smart Trainer to the watches via Ant+ capability. But I understand these sport watches aren't designed strictly for tracking my workouts and to get the most out of them, I'd need to know them as well as they intended to know me. To do this, I decided to dig into what else they offer, including everything from sleep-tracking and offline map support to music compatibility and <a href="https://www.insider.com/best-personal-training-apps" target="_blank" rel="noopener">expert coaching</a>. <h2>Garmin</h2><div type="image" title="Garmin 945" height="900" width="1200" msid="75145613" hostid="261"></div><h3>An in-depth coaching platform </h3>For Garmin, the <a href="https://www.avantlink.com/click.php?tt=cl&amp;mi=10248&amp;pw=184534&amp;ctc=&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.rei.com%2Fproduct%2F159452%2Fgarmin-forerunner-945-gps-watcher-945-gps-watch" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Forerunner 945</a> is one of its top-of-the-line sport watches, intended for use for everything from marathon training to triathlons. What I learned when I spoke with Garmin product manager, Joe Heikes, is that the watch doubles as both a tracker and coach. Garmin offers three training plans developed by elite running coaches that can help me specifically prep for a 5k, 10k, or half-marathon. By using Garmin's own algorithms, the plan adapts to the training I complete and how I register I'm feeling after sessions. It then uses that to let me know my training status and the effect of my runs, how much rest I need, and when I can train again. This feature isn't just useful for race training but can be vitally important to casual runners, too. Understanding the way training affects you, as well as how much rest you need between sessions, is a crucial aspect of anyone's physical fitness — and Garmin wanted to be sure advanced features like this were available to both competing athletes and ordinary wearers. <h3>Prioritizing rest and relaxation </h3>I knew my fitness tracker would help me track my training but I didn't know it could also monitor my energy, sleep, and stress. Garmin's Body Battery rating scores me 0-100 each day using my heart rate and blood oxygen data that it collects via a back-of-the-watch sensor. This rating allows me to see if I'm getting enough rest, whether I should prioritize recovery, and how well I'm doing during each training session. Heart rate variability is a good indicator of stress level, too. If the watch detects my heart rate is higher than it should be, it directs me to breathing exercises to help me calm down. The watch uses sensors plus activity tracking to tell me how long a break I need to recover before my next workout. The blood oxygen sensor has other applications, too. When I'm adventuring at altitude, I can use it to make sure I'm not ascending too fast. And while Garmin doesn't have medical applications, low blood oxygen levels on the watch could be a nudge to check in with a doctor if I'm not feeling 100%. <h3>A world of maps on my wrist</h3>Another feature that's indispensable to me is the watch's compatibility with onboard maps. The Forerunner offers neighborhood street-level detailed maps, so if I miss a turn on my hike, walk, run or ride, I can figure out where I am. The watch even has a trackback feature that generates a retrace of my route so I can find my way back to a trailhead or cross-street. The mode also lets me choose a back-to-start option that shows me the shortest route home from my current position.<h3>Make use of the non-fitness features, too </h3>The <a href="https://www.avantlink.com/click.php?tt=cl&amp;mi=10248&amp;pw=184534&amp;ctc=&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.rei.com%2Fproduct%2F159452%2Fgarmin-forerunner-945-gps-watcher-945-gps-watch" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Forerunner 945</a> offers plenty of other features that aren't just fitness-related, too. A personal favorite is how it's able to store and stream up to 1000 songs straight to my Bluetooth earbuds. This means I can leave my phone at home and take a walk, run, or ride and decompress from the online sensory overload with music in my ears. The watch even syncs with Spotify, too. This allows you to load your credit card info into Garmin Connect for contactless payment via card readers at the grocery store. The service also lets you easily transfer funds.One of the things I'm often asked about when I head out to run or bike is to keep in contact should I need help. Thankfully, the 945 also has safety and tracking features. This lets me add up to three emergency contacts and if the watch thinks I've been in an accident, it automatically triggers an alert to them. After loading my favorite activities onto the watch from Suunto's app — there are 80 to choose from — I was able to track up to 120 hours of activity without a recharge. This means that I could venture out on a multi-day backpacking trip and not have to worry about a dead watch on the trek back home. Top 10 Unexplored Vacation Places In India

The theory that the plane was stolen or hijacked and then flown for 7 hours on either <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/investigators-think-the-missing-malaysia-jet-is-most-likely-in-southern-indian-ocean-2014-3">a bizarre suicide mission</a> or to a secret destination somewhere remains the prevailing hypothesis.
But given the level of planning and execution required to carry out this plan, as well as the lack of any obvious motives, other theories also have to be considered.
Yesterday, we described one such theory - a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/malaysia-plane-fire-2014-3">fire on the plane that overwhelmed and incapacitated the pilots</a>. This theory fits many of the facts, and it is a much simpler explanation than the "intentional commandeering" hypothesis. But this theory, too, doesn't fit all the facts, especially now that it is being reported that the plane's course changed before the co-pilot said "Good night" to Malaysia air traffic control - a routine call that made it sound as though everything was fine.
The smoke-in-the-cockpit theory also <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/did-missing-plane-fly-for-hours-after-deadly-fire-2014-3">isn't sitting well with some pilots we have talked to</a>, including one who has flown the same type of plane as the one that disappeared, the 777 - 200ER.
These pilots point out that "smoke in the cockpit" is one of the most common emergencies that pilots train for and that 777s are equipped with full-face oxygen masks that the pilots would have put on before they did anything else. They also say that, unless the pilots ignored their training, they would then have run through a checklist of tasks that would have included descending rapidly and making an emergency radio call.

And here's another, more detailed reaction that we received from a pilot who has flown the 777 (the pilot asked us to keep his employer and his name anonymous):
As a former B777 pilot, I find the "plausible" theory you published is not in line with the facts as they have been reported. I am a professional pilot with type ratings in the DC-9 (MD88, MD90), B757, 767 and 777 and I served as a Captain at a major US international airline. I feel I have some insight to add to the discussion about MH370.
First off, the idea that a wheel well fire could have burned unnoticed for over an hour after takeoff is not plausible. The B777 has wheel well overheat/fire detection systems that would have sounded an alarm for the cockpit crew soon after takeoff, were that an issue. Additionally, the cockpit is equipped with full-face O2 masks that provide a safe breathing atmosphere to every pilot. At the first sign of ANY smoke, the pilots are trained to drop everything and immediately, without hesitation, don those rapid-don masks that are designed to be easily donned with one hand and immedately secure themselves to the face. After that, the Captain will delegate duties... one pilot flies the plane and handles communications, while the other works the problem, using checklists designed to narrow the issue down and address it. 
While the pilot working the problem is busy, the pilot flying will turn the aircraft towards the nearest appropriate airport, begin a descent, and communicate with ATC and/or any airplanes in the area. While it is true that the checklists may, in the event of an electrical fire, have the pilots de-power certain systems or circuits, these steps are down the list; the pilots would have already declared the emergency and turned towards the nearest appropriate airport. 
I can think of no plausible reason why the crew never made any attempt to contact ATC during the event, except that whoever was in control of the cockpit did not wish to communicate.
In the case of MH370, a turn was made, but no descent was initiated at that time, nor was any communication with ATC made.
Additionally, the aircraft has been reported to have climbed to FL450, and descended to FL 250 later in the flight. If the flight crew had been incapacitated, this could not have occurred.
Finally, a fire that incapacitated everyone onboard would have, in every scenario I can logically come up with, destroyed the aircraft soon thereafter. I reference the Swissair Flight 111, an MD11 that crash off the coast of Halifax, Nova Scotia on September 2nd, 1998. From the time of initial cockpit indication of smoke until the crew was completely incapacitated was 14 minutes; the aircraft crash soon thereafter. In this incident, the crew had ample time to communicate with ATC, and was running checklists until the very end. Indeed, the crew elected to stay airborne and continue running checklists while dumping fuel, instead of landing immediately; this decision has been credited with the loss of all passengers and crew, and is exactly why landing immediately is the primary goal in an airborne fire.
For a fire to have been burning from the wheelwell for over an hour before detection is not within the realm of realistic possibilities, in my opinion.
While I agree that finding accurate information has been difficult with the Malaysian Government's recalcitrance and affection for misinformation, everything I've read points to a takeover event that was planned and executed by persons unknown. And while some of the facts can point toward the [smoke in the cockpit scenario], to believe that this scenario is correct in the face of all the information would indicate a gross negligence on the part of the Cockpit crew, and a refusal to follow basic emergency procedures. 
While we all have our own biases and hopes concerning this tragic event, as a pilot who flies in this theater of the world often, I am truly concerned at the Malaysian Government's reluctance to disseminate information, include other governments, or address their lax security procedures. Why were two passengers allowed to board the aircraft using stolen passports? Why did the first officer have a history of allowing passengers to ride in the cockpit of his aircraft while in flight? Where is the journalistic outcry for these obvious and dangerous breaches in security, and why aren't you, as a journalist, using your voice to call attention to it? Regardless of what is finally determined to be the proximate cause of this tragedy (which I readily admit could still be an accident) the big story should be that the Malaysian Government is putting the lives of its passengers in extreme danger by not enforcing universal rules for security and flight safety.
In a second email, this pilot expanded on how he is thinking about what might have happened:
I don't know what happened to MH370 any more than anyone else who wasn't aboard. But here's how my head works with this. I try to find the simplest, least complex explanation that works with ALL THE AVAILABLE FACTS/INFORMATION, and that doesn't need "added" leaps or assertions or events to have happened that we do not have any info about.

For instance, several things point to an "event," not an "accident." The lack of communication, the programmed turn, the climb to FL450 and descent to FL250, and the continuation of the aircraft's existence as a whole object, powered and uncrashed, for about 7+ hours after the disappearance.

The planes' ACARS and Transponder were physically shut off, by some accounts before the last radio communication from the crew. We know that the aircraft remained powered and in controlled flight for many hours after this point. The aircraft's route of flight in the FMS was changed by someone in the cockpit, as was it's altitude, both up and down. There was no "mayday" issued, and the aircraft did not answer repeated radio calls from ATC.

Let's look at a smoke or fire "accident." I do not believe, based on what we know now, that there was smoke or a fire. Why? Because there is no indication of fire, or smoke in the cockpit, during the time the aircraft was still in contact, and there is no indication of "fire" behavior in the aircraft's flight path. Additionally, normal emergency protocols train the crew to immediately don and wear full face O2 masks (the B777 is equipped with them), and designate one pilot to fly and talk to everyone (Aviate &amp; communicate) while the other pilot runs the checklist and fights the problem. The plane made a sharp left turn, towards land, soon after ATC communication was lost. This was shown to have been pre-programmed into the FMS by the pilots.

The "flying pilot's" job in an emergency such as this would be to point the airplane at the closest acceptable runway, announce to the world the nature of the emergency (ATC) and request help, and begin a descent so that at some point during the process, an attempt to vent the smoke from the cabin could be done.

Basically, none of this was done. This leads me to believe that there was no emergency of this type. For this type of emergency to be in play, it indicates that the cockpit crew would have had to willfully refused to follow their training and checklists to combat the emergency.

Airborne smoke and fire emergencies are extremely serious, and are trained for by every airline crew in the world. In the wake of SwissAir 111, which crashed off the coast of Nova Scotia, we know that a flight crew has a very limited period of time in which they must land the plane before disaster... only 14 minutes in the SwissAir tragedy... yet MH370 continued to fly for more than 7 hours after contact was lost. This is yet another clue that points away from an in flight physical, mechanical or other type of emergency.

There is evidence that Malaysia Air crews often allowed passengers onto the flight deck during flight, which is an indication both of lax safety and security procedures to my western way of thinking, but may be totally permissible at Malaysia Air. The FO had allowed some pretty girls to sit in the cockpit during a flight last year. His Captain did not protest. This anecdotal info could lend credence to the idea of hijackers gaining access to the flight deck after takeoff.

To my eye, a fire/smoke emergency does not fit what we currently know.

Neither does a missile, engine failure, structural failure, loss of pressurization or any other kind of "accidental" failure. This looks and sounds like a "planned event," not an "unforeseen emergency." Mistakes can occur, and the sad truth is that we don't know what we don't know… but until something comes to light that supports an "emergency" situation, the simplest and most logical explanation is that someone took control of that airplane and diverted it from it's planned course and destination.
