Indian hotel companies have shown resilience during the pandemic and now the markets are celebrating them

New Delhi, Nov 17 () Online travel firm MakeMyTrip is looking to add over 10,000 alternative accommodation properties in India in 2020, with the company expecting to achieve double-digit growth in the segment during the period.
 Currently, the company has 1,70,000 bookable properties in India and overseas in the alternative accommodation segment which includes villas, apartments, homestays, guesthouses and hostels, among others.
 "As travel growth continues to beat market estimates, we aim to add more than 10,000 alternative accommodation properties in India in the coming year. Additionally, we are bullish on achieving double-digit growth in the segment in the next 12 months," MakeMyTrip COO Vipul Prakash told .
 With a great market opportunity on one side and over 44 million customers on the platform on the other, MakeMyTrip is confident of encouraging a shift in driving consideration for the segment amongst leisure and corporate consumers travelling in India who are looking for more choices, he added.
 "At a time when customers, especially millennials, prefer experiential travel choices, alternative accommodations are offering quality yet economical, offbeat options and it is only set to grow more popular within Indian travellers," Prakash said.
 As a platform, MakeMyTrip's endeavour is to empower its customer with more and more choices so that they always find the best fit on their one-stop travel shop, he added.
 Currently, the company offers alternative accommodations across destinations including Goa, Coorg, Wayanad, Lonavala, Shimla, Darjeeling, Ooty, Alleppey and the metros.
 Overseas, the company offers such booking options in Dubai, Singapore, Bali, Kuala Lumpur, London, Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam, Melbourne, Sydney, Las Vegas, New York, Ho-Chi-Minh City and Hanoi, among others, it added.
 Out of 1,70,000 properties overall in the segment, the company has around 25,000 bookable properties in India.

Several self help groups, NGOs and local administration have joined hands to ensure that masks -- a very essential means of protection from the infection-- reach everyone in the country. The move has not only helped in protecting others but has also given livelihood opportunities to several women specially during the period of lockdown when most of them from the unorganised sectors have lost their jobs. In Kerala, over 300 women-led micro enterprises under the Kudumbashree – State Poverty Eradication Mission in Kerala -- have manufactured more than 14.50 lakh cloth masks, a representative from the Gram Panchayat of Veeyapuram said. Priced between Rs 10 and 15 depending on the layering in the mask, the micro enterprises have by that measure grossed a turnover of around Rs 2 crore through these units to meet the demand for masks and providing a reusable option in cloth, he said. The masks are being sought through bulk orders by government departments and essential service providers, he added. Child rights body Save the Children said they had provided support in setting up the apparel training centre in 2018 and women are beneficiaries. "These women were trained, provided material support and currently they are making masks. This unit is self sustainable and at this crisis time this is not only providing service to the community but this is also a livelihood support for the marginalised and BPL category women," said Anindit Roy Choudhury, Director Programmes, Save the Children. These masks are not only ensuring protection of people from coronavirus but also giving a means of livelihood for people like Mala. Mala has got Rs 8000 so far by for stitching masks under the initiative. She says she can stitch up to 200 masks every day. "Sale of the masks is a means of livelihood in this period of lockdown. Earlier, I was not contributing to my family but now I am able to support them financially," she told . In <keyword id="6354915" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="assam">Assam</keyword>'s Dibrugarh district, the masks are manufactured by Partner NGO of Save the Children, SEWA. The masks are being made as per request of the district administration. Till now 800 pieces which have been made will be distributed in the tea estate, Chaudhary said. As per SEWA's request the district administration issued a general order to shop owners to supply raw material to SEWA. "A worker can produce 40 to 50 masks per day. The main aim is to promote the use of masks amongst the common people and also to make the masks available for poor and vulnerable people," he said. In Damoh in Madhya Pradesh, around 156 women have been involved in production of masks and have made over 50,000 masks till now which are ready for distribution, a local administration official said. Sarita, who used to earlier work as a daily wager, is now stitching masks in Damoh. "This way, I can support my family till things return to normal. She says she knew basic training and it is helping her now," she said. In Bihar's Sitamarhi, women are making masks with support from the government and supplying it to primary health centres. "We are selling one mask for Rs 20. It is our way to ensure that these affordable masks reach every one," said Rashmi, a volunteer, involved in stitching these masks. In east Champaran district and Gaya too, Save the Children is involved in the production of masks. "In east Champaran district, our partners have received the approval from the government on helping spread the awareness on COVID-19 and on the importance of lockdown and physical distancing. The masks were also made and distributed on the basis of same approval," said Choudhury. In Gaya, an adolescent group of girls prepared the masks at a local level on the basis of specifications advised by the government and distributed in their community, he said. He said the materials were procured locally from local vendors. Due to non-availability of materials they couldn't make many masks. He said around 3500 masks were made in two days in Gaya and east Champaran. "The aim of this program is to orient and make aware children and communities on COVID-19 and its preventive measures. The focus is to mitigate the risk factors related to COVID-19 transmission," he added He said the move not only aims at providing immediate respite to communities through food (dry ration) baskets, hygiene and dignity kits, but also provide livelihood support to make sure that families can deal with the economic blow that the pandemic has brought on to them, said Choudhury. India is currently under the biggest lockdown with around 1.3 billion people asked to stay home in view of the coronavirus outbreak, which has claimed 273 lives and infected more than 8,000 people. In 2010, the pair left their adopted home of London to travel around the world, and they haven't stopped since. 
Last year, the couple took a <a href="http://globetrottergirls.com/2012/08/our-india-highlight-kerala-backwaters-cruise/" target="_blank">three-day houseboat river cruise in Kerala, India</a>, a region known for its sprawling river system and proximity to the Laccadive Sea.
After looking at seven boats in the major tourist city of Alleppey (also known as Alappuzha), and <a href="http://globetrottergirls.com/2012/08/how-to-book-a-houseboat-in-kerala/" target="_blank">bartering down the price to 7,000 rupees per night</a> (or $125), Dani and Jess set out with two friends to travel the lakes and streams of Kerala.
Their journey through the backwaters surpassed expectations. Superb daily meals, outstanding views of nature and the surrounding villages, and a leisurely boat ride made for a memorable experience. They even booked an extra night with their personal captain and crew to keep the experience going.

Over the course, it has weathered multiple storms ranging from significant supply increases to multiple bouts of economic uncertainty, both globally and regionally,” said Mandeep Lamba, managing director of Hotels at JLL India. 
 
He explained, “While the Bangalore hotel market today accounts for the largest share of branded economy hotel rooms in the country, Pune comes in a close second with nearly 1,050 branded economy rooms.” 
 Apart from Bangalore and Pune, if you plan to visit the backwaters of Kerala, then do check out the budget hotels in Alleppey. The summer is here and so is the time to take that one long vacation in the year. But with so many long weekends coming up every now and then, travelling can burn a hole in the pocket. However, with the budget segment ramping up its services, you may just want to consider them as well. 
	 “It is very encouraging to see that the number of people taking a holiday in the summer is increasing year-on-year. Taking a break on a regular basis is a fast emerging trend; be it a luxurious trip, a weekend getaway, a family trip or a pocket friendly outing. Our mobile bookings have also risen significantly, with over two-fifth of our traffic recorded from smart phones and tablets,” said <keyword id="332366" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sharat-Dhall">Sharat Dhall</keyword>, president of travel portal <keyword id="143718" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Yatra-com">Yatra.com</keyword>. 
	 
	He explained that the budget travellers, who accounted for a meager 7% last year, have risen to 26.7% this year. 
	 
	Sharing a similar sentiment, a travel agent, who did not wished to be named, added, “There are a lot of people who want to travel. But with frequent long weekend trips, money becomes a major problem. People are looking at affordable accommodation when they travel to a place. On an average, a traveler spends a minimum of Rs 2,000 to Rs 3,000 per day while travelling,” said a travel agent who requested anonymity. However, he noted that while more people are also considering <keyword id="507551" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="budget-hotels">budget hotels</keyword>, there is still apprehension amongst them as they are not sure of the quality of services that will be offered. 
	 
	According to market reports, the budget hotel segment is picking up in cities such as Bangalore and Pune. “Over the past decade, the Pune hotel sector has emerged a formidable competitor to other the hospitality markets in the country, growing from a negligible base of branded hotel rooms in 2005 into becoming one of India’s top five hotel markets in 2014. Over the course, it has weathered multiple storms ranging from significant supply increases to multiple bouts of economic uncertainty, both globally and regionally,” said Mandeep Lamba, managing director of Hotels at JLL India. 
	 
	He explained, “While the Bangalore hotel market today accounts for the largest share of branded economy hotel rooms in the country, Pune comes in a close second with nearly 1,050 branded economy rooms.” 
	 
	Apart from Bangalore and Pune, if you plan to visit the backwaters of Kerala, then do check out the budget hotels in Alleppey. According to Trip Advisor, Bamboo Lagoon Backwaters Front Resort is also one of the great budget hotel options in the city. Similarly, if you want to visit Havelock Islands in the Great Andamans, you will find several nice budget hotels at great prices that are sea facing and offers the calmness that you want away from the busy city life. 
	 
	While this may be the story down South, in the western region such as Sawai Madhopur, Jaipur, Udaipur or even the Great Rann of Kutchh, a traveler can find some great hotels at a reasonable price. 
	 
	Up in the hills, there are plenty of hotels that offer decent services. Dharmshala, Nanital, Manali, Mussoorie among other have slew of budget hotels that a person can pick from. In the east, places such as Gangtok, Darjeeling, Puri in Odisha too have many budget hotels that are known for offering good services at great prices. 
	 
	Interestingly, with Indians becoming avid travellers, budget hotels are realising that they have a large market to tap onto. Besides, firms such as OYO Rooms too have come up that are now upgrading the services offered to a customer in a budget hotel, thus revamping the tainted image of this segment of hotels.
