Leading radio stations have reported a great year with revenue hikes and expect higher momentum in the coming years. Music Broadcast Limited, which hosts Radio City, has reported revenues of ₹87.02 crore in the first half of the financial year, along with a CAGR of 34%, while Motilal Oswal has reported that Entertainment Network India Limited, which hosts Radio Mirchi has reported a 36% YoY growth. “In the last 3 years our revenue CAGR has been 15% which is almost double than that of the industry. H1 was expected to be subdued due to lingering impact of GST and demonetization, but we are delighted to witness an upsurge in H2. We have delivered a margin of 33% despite investments in our new stations. As the economy recovers, we expect to keep up the momentum in the future too,” said Apurva Purohit, President Jagran Group &amp; Director, Music Broadcast Ltd. Most experts believe that 2017 was a bad year because of multiple reasons – effects of demonetization, real estate law, RERA, and the introduction of the Goods and Services Tax (GST). After a subdued 2017, where the radio industry grew at only 3%; in 2018 the industry at large grew at 9.5%. “Most of these effects reduced in 2018, but media continues to remain under pressure. The print and OOH business have faced more pressure. Radio and TV have done better,” said Prashant Panday, MD &amp; CEO, Entertainment Network India Limited (ENIL). Staying alive Despite the increasing popularity of OTT platforms, like Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hotstar, which is consuming a large part of the Indian consumers time, radio has managed to stay alive. Global giant Spotify too is all set to launch in India which could become a big hit with millennials because of its popularity abroad. As per a 2018 KPMG report, radio garnered 7.9% growth in ad revenues in FY 17-18. According to a <a href="http://businessfortnight.com/music-broadcast-runs-radio-city-eyes-acquisitions-kolkata-mp/">FICCI report</a>, the industry is expected to grow at a compounded annual growth rate of 16.1% between 2016 and 2021 and is projected to be a Rs.4780 crore industry by 2021. The industry believes that radio has transitioned from being a medium that is under threat of other rising media but instead is a part of the latter’s growth journey. “We believe radio as a medium, complements television where it improves the efficiency of a TV plan because of the cost effective reach it adds; and is also complementary to new age digital plans where radio can be used as an awareness building medium to direct traffic towards PVs and clicks on digital,” said Purohit. Advertising from radio too is a market that can’t be ignored. Global media network GroupM in its report – This Year, Next Year 2019 – stated that India is predicted to be the 10th fastest growing country on ad spends across the globe – where radio is headed to grow by 15%. “When the economy slows down, or major advertisers face stress, they turn more towards consumer offers, and hence towards radio. Radio makes print and TV work harder. Radio is the last medium consumed before a consumer enters a store, so it helps increase footfalls. In cars, 80% of all cars are tuned into radio,” said Panday. Mirchi in just Mumbai and Delhi, has a weekly listenership of 7 million people. <ul><li>The <keyword id="84486" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="All-INdia-radio">All India Radio</keyword> (AIR) will launch a radio programme focussed to train students in English. </li><li>The programme titled ‘Aao Angrezi Seekhein’ will be aired from 1 September at 11 am. </li><li> It will have 15 minutes learning sessions and will broadcast a total of 120 episodes. </li><li>According to a BBC survey, merely 10% of the total population in India is fluent in English.</li></ul>The All India Radio (AIR) will launch a radio programme to train students in English. The programme called ‘Aao Angrezi Seekhein’ (Come let's learn English) will be aired from 1 September at 11 am. The radio broadcast is initiated by the UN International Children's Fund (UNICEF), <keyword id="54028" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sarva-Shiksha-Abhiyan">Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan</keyword> (SSA), and the Uttar Pradesh government. It aims to enhance pronunciation and speaking skills of students, with 15 minute sessions. It will broadcast a total of 120 episodes. According to a<a href="http://www.sundayobserver.lk/2019/08/11/thoughts/english-language-cannot-be-taught-it-must-be-learnt"> BBC survey</a>, merely 10% of the total population in India is fluent in English. However, with the government stepping up efforts to reform education and extend it to minority sections, it is expected to rise four times by 2030. To start with, the programme will be launched from Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBV) for students of classes V to VIII. "Teachers and Block Education officers have been directed to ensure the availability of a radio and their proper functioning before September 1,” IANS reported citing Basic Education Department officials. Meanwhile, state governments have also asked shiksha adhikaris (education officers) to conduct quiz contests and essay writing competition every three months. <ul><li>In an attempt to combat <keyword id="2479020" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Fake-news">fake news</keyword> being spread via <keyword id="790242" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="WhatsApp">WhatsApp</keyword>, the messaging service has launched a <keyword id="1986556" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="radio-campaign">radio campaign</keyword> in <keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword>. </li><li>The campaign, currently being broadcast in <keyword id="6357660" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="hindi">Hindi</keyword>, is a 30-second clip explaining how users can verify whether or not a message is fraudulent. </li><li>WhatsApp also has plans of broadcasting the add in regional languages via government-run radio channels in the coming weeks. </li></ul>While there seems to have been some miscommunication between the Indian government and WhatsApp over whether or not messages can be traced back to their original sender, the messaging platform has taken to radio to address the problem of fake news. Broadcasting in Hindi, the 30-second educational campaign ends with the statement, ‘Mil kar mitaayein afwaahon ka bazaar’ (Let’s come together to eradicate the rumour mills). It informs users about how to check the authenticity of messages before forwarding them to other users and calling people to action. The radio broadcast is the next phase of the public awareness campaign that the messaging platform initiated with full-page advertisements in major Indian newspapers back in July. And, the ad isn’t specific to one city. The radio campaign will be airing across all 46 channels under <keyword id="84486" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="All-INdia-radio">All India Radio</keyword> (AIR). They plan on moving beyond Hindi to air the ad in regional languages via other government-run radio channels in the coming weeks. WhatsApp vs India WhatsApp hasn’t had the best run in India this year with the string of lynchings that were a result of people using the platform to spread <keyword id="535763" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Misinformation">misinformation</keyword>. The Indian government and the Facebook-owned messaging platform seemed to be at odds about what can be done to counter fake news, especially when it comes to tracking messages back to their owners. While the Indian government re-iterates time and again that the task shouldn’t be all that difficult to accomplish, the messaging service is stringent in its resolve that such a solution will impair the privacy of its users. WhatsApp’s <keyword id="569230" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="End-to-end-encryption">end-to-end encryption</keyword> is one of its most important features. It entails that the messages on the app can only be read by the people involved in the conversation, that they are the only ones with the key. According to the company, even they can’t spy on the messages being sent. That being said, they’re both on the same page when it comes to setting up a local office in the country with a local team that can be held accountable when things go wrong.  Initially, the idea of such <keyword id="4386230" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="global-news-channel">global news channel</keyword> was thought of in the time of the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/VVIP-helicopter-scam-hidden-facts/articleshow/51976339.cms">UPA government</a>, but was never initiated. 
 
"It couldn't happen earlier for whatever reason. But this is the right time to have a global media presence," Surya Prakash said.

Modi government contemplating a digital platform for India's voice

Teachers’ Day used to be a silent affair. The celebrations were confined to schools’ and colleges’ four-walls alone. People who used to be really excited about this day were senior secondary students as the day gave them a chance to imitate their favourite teacher for one day. But Teacher’s Day celebrations have taken a political turn as PM Modi decides to address students across the country. 
 The PM’s act of addressing students from class VI to XII through <keyword id="6408304" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="doordarshan">Doordarshan</keyword> and <keyword id="84486" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="All-INdia-radio">All India Radio</keyword> is under scrutiny, but what’s the entire hullabaloo all about? 
 
People are seeing this as another dictatorial move by the Modi-led government. But is it really so? Forcing the students of democratic India to listen to the PM’s speech surely comes across as an autocratic move. The government could have avoided this unnecessary controversy by being more flexible in its approach and making listening to the speech voluntary. 
 Listening to the <keyword id="71" type="POSITION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Prime-Minister">Prime Minister</keyword>’s address to the nation on national events like Independence Day is not mandatory, then why on Teachers’ Day? May be the government intends to influence these young minds that can be moulded quite easily at this tender age. 
 
Even the schools are going a step ahead to appease the Modi government. According to a report, Bal Bharati Public School in Noida has issued a circular stating that, “The school will remain closed (preparatory off) on September 5 for all classes. However, for classes III to XII, the key points of the Prime Minister’s address are to be noted and learnt for the school to evaluate the same (during the upcoming examination from Monday).” It further added that one question of two marks each will be asked in each of the five main papers. 
 
In South, especially TamilNadu, where Hindi is not understood so easily, teachers have been asked to interpret Prime Minister Modi’s speech in the native language. 
 
Are these events signalling the rise of a tyranny? Or would the PM prove the critics wrong by delivering an inspirational speech and choosing not to politicise this pious occasion. Let’s not be too judgemental and wait till the speech is delivered. Modi, after all, has the knack of proving his detractors wrong.

When he lays open his mind on his thoughts relating to drug abuse that seems to be affecting the nation’s future, the Prime Minister will surely strike a chord with scores of parents and youth whose lives have been disrupted by drugs. 
 
One look at the data relating to drugs, it becomes evident that the issue needs to be addressed in mainstream and not as a rehabilitating solution. Because, when drugs and narcotics enter the life of a youth, they not only ruin the life of one person but the entire family connected to that one life. 
 
Today, drugs seem to be surpassing all other reasons, which can lead to snuffing any chances of a fruitful future out of precious lives that could build a strong nation. Whether it is states like North East, or Punjab or terror-stricken Kashmir, drugs today account to more suicides than lives lost owing to social menaces like dowry, poverty, or deaths relating to economic reasons. 
 
Every day, India loses seven young lives – mostly men – owing to their addiction to narcotics. In the last decade or so, about a quarter of lakh people ended their lives owing to drug abuse in various parts of the country. Annually about 2,452 youths put an end to their lives owing to drugs. 
 
The number of suicides that have occurred with the definite cause of drug abuse has been on a steady rise. The curve is much sharper than ever before. From 2004 to 2013, the numbers of deaths relating to drug abuse have simply risen by 149%! 
 
According to the data put together by Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, the country has about 3.4 million victims of drug abuse. And, this is restricted to legally banned drugs since alcoholics cannot be brought under its ambit. But, if one considers alcohol also as a drug since it involves the necessary quality of addiction which qualifies to be a drug, the number will increase by an additional 11 million people in India. 
 
Though there are about 3.4 million drug users in India, the rehabilitation efforts have remained dismal with country having just 401 functional rehabilitation centres that function on a daily basis. 
 
Blame it on the lack of facilities, or lack of conviction on part of the drug abusers, only 0.3 million people out of the total number of drug abusers have registered themselves at any de-addiction centre in various states in the country. 
Most of them are from Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Orissa–with least mention of Punjab, Kashmir and North Eastern states–which have been sounding a warning bell since long, with more and more youths coming under the influence of drugs. Just Manipur makes it to the list here. 
When calculated in the ‘per capita’ category, most of the northeastern states easily make it to the list as the top states staring at bleak future as far as increased drug addiction is concerned. India is sandwiched between two infamous drug routes such as ‘Golden Crescent’ and ‘Golden Triangle’ in the Northeast where drugs make for a hassle-free transaction. 
 
Increased entry of drugs into Indian markets is another area of grave concern for the authorities as in the last four years alone, about a 100 million kilogram of drugs has been seized at different locations across the country. And, Punjab which was once known as the wheat bowl of India, today ranks second only to Mizoram! 
 India has been taking pride in the fact that by the end of this decade, the country may well have highest number of youths, with the country donning a bright-and-youthful look armed with highly-educated human resources making it a vibrant <keyword id="34412" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="economy">economy</keyword> with such valuable human resources. 
But with steady increase in the statistics of drug abusers which mainly comprise of youth who would be the face of the country taking it to higher levels with industrious achievements, drugs pose a major threat to any dreams India may nurse about standing tall as a country that marches towards focused development areas.

Thirty-nine years after Queen's cult song "Radio Ga Ga" rocked the airwaves, listeners agreed the best may still be around the corner for that much-loved and evolving with the times 'audio device'. Quite simply, the radio. It was sometime in the 1960s. Nemichand Barola was about 10. And remembers vividly tunes from Radio Ceylon playing from a radio in a paan shop in his hometown Ajmer adding to lazy afternoon vibes. Some six decades later, Barola, now a retired school principal, still prefers radio over television and turns to it for that odd melody from his younger days and also for the essential news broadcast from an All India Radio channel. "Radio doesn't disturb me when I am writing or doing any work, it is not possible with TV or mobile phones. I don't have to stop my work to listen to the radio," Barola told PTI. It's his connection from his yesterday to his present, the great societal leveller that binds cities to villages, rich to poor. Once a lifeline to keep in touch with music trends, cricket matches, and the news in distant corners of the country and still a mainstay for many. On World Radio Day on Monday, it is the simplicity, reach and accessibility of the medium that still connects the likes of Barola to the old-worldly charm of the radio in an age of innumerable news channels and music streaming services, say experts. "Radio is a very convenient and easy medium that can be accessed by anyone anywhere. You don't require internet connection, you don't require electricity to operate it. And you don't need to sit in front of it to listen," said <keyword id="5885814" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="jainendra-singh" source="Orion">Jainendra Singh</keyword>, retired broadcaster and additional director at All India Radio. The days of transistor sets are long over but the means of listening to the radio have increased with smartphones, audio platforms that customise playlists, FM radio in cars and devices such as Sony's music streaming 'box' Caravan'. In rural areas and economically marginalised sections, a large number of people rely on basic mobile phones that come with an in-built radio feature: a real gamechanger, according to Arti <keyword id="6001550" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="jaiman" source="Orion">Jaiman</keyword> of community radio station Gurgaon <keyword id="5314325" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ki-awaaz" source="Orion">Ki Awaaz</keyword>. "During the lockdown, when people were short on money to recharge their phones for the internet, they turned to their basic phones and listened to educational programmes free of charge on the radio," she said. While Barola's love for the radio comes from an era when the visual medium hadn't reached the masses, 25-year-old media professional Falak Afshan from Hyderabad says radio was her first love because of its refined mix of chaste Hindi and Urdu. "I started with All India Radio to improve my Hindi and Urdu, which eventually became second nature. Also, my father loved to listen to music on the radio, so be it Mehdi Hasan's ghazals or Usha Uthup's songs, something would always be playing," Afshan said. Listeners from two different eras, Barola and Afshan are but few of an increasing number of Indians who are connected by the undeniable charm of the radio. The enduring attraction of the radio is evident from the latest Economic Survey which noted that FM radio has flourished in the last few years. According to it, the number of private FM radio stations has increased from 243 in the quarter ending December 2015 to 388 in the quarter ending June 2022. Talking about why radio continues to be a strong advertising medium, Anupama Singh, Consultant – Content Management, Carat India, “Radio as a medium, at one end of the spectrum, works as the last mile reminder medium and at the other end, helps the marketers to reach the audiences in the media dark areas, where electricity/literacy can be a challenge. The privatisation of Radio in 2001 opened a lot of opportunities to the marketers- large and small. For large marketers, radio helps to build frequency and hyper-local targeting. For retailers, it is a cost-effective medium that helps them reach their audience with the least spillover.” So how has the medium been working on giving robust solutions to advertisers? Talking about the kind of solutions they have been working on providing, Narayanan said, “We never believed in offering vanilla solutions as radio offers opportunities to innovate and micro target at the city levels. With our RJs being influencers in their own way, we firmly believe that a good solution, coupled with its delivery are equally important.” She further ads that their approach has always been to offer integrated solutions comprising of multimedia platforms. “We are also collaborating with many of them in designing their creatives through audio and video, besides taking care of other communication needs. Integrated multimedia campaigns and on ground, digital podcast productions for the clients are something that we take up as customized projects,” explained Narayanan. Today, it is all about coming up with bigger and better solutions for advertisers, said Panday. “We used to house our digital products within Solutions in the past. We are now carving digital products out of Solutions. With our platform launch in international markets, we will start aggregating audiences on our own platform. This will give us unprecedented insights on our consumers, something that has been missing on FM radio and even external platforms. We will also finally have our own digital inventory to offer to advertisers. Therefore, a whole lot of action can be expected from Solutions and Digital. Together, we expect this to grow from one-third to half of our revenues in the near future. FM radio may grow at 6-8% in the years ahead, but Solutions and Digital can grow at 15-18% CAGR for many years to come,” he said. What the future looks like As a medium, Radio has a huge potential. However, with consumers wanting to access content according to their own convenience, one of the biggest challenges for traditional radio was the fact that it could bit be accessed on-demand. “However, to address this, the radio industry is now transforming themselves into an audio entertainment company by venturing into podcasts, videos through web radio, and social content for the modern generations who want content at their fingertips at all times. World Radio Day 2022: How the Radio industry is paving the way for its next phase of growth

New Delhi, Feb 12 () Trai on Wednesday urged the government to come out with a detailed policy framework for digital radio broadcasting, an area where the regulator had already given its recommendations, and said it is willing to offer further policy inputs on the issue, if needed. The policy on digital radio broadcasting should also be supplemented by a comprehensive road map for the roll-out of these services in a time-bound manner, Trai Chairman R S Sharma said. "In order to bring all stakeholders, radio broadcasters, transmission equipment manufactures and digital receiver manufacturers on one platform and encourage them to work collectively for developing the ecosystem for digital radio broadcasting, the government should come out with a detailed policy framework for digital radio broadcasting in India," he said. Sharma was addressing a joint workshop on 'Digital Radio Vision for India' organised by Xperi Corporation and India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA). Citing Trai's recommendations of February 2018 in this regard, Sharma said the regulator is also willing to provide any other policy inputs, if required. "But, I feel if we want to have digital radio broadcasting which is important from every perspective...from quality, coverage, utilisation of spectrum...we need to have policy and clear road map to ensure all our policy objectives...Digital India vision, disaster management, quality of service and affordability of service all these things can be realised," he said. Later on the sidelines, Sharma said the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) will release, in a week, its recommendation on reserve price for auction of FM Radio channels for tier-II and III towns, on which the government had sought the regulator's recommendations. "We are ready with the recommendations and we will release them in a week's time where we will provide (view on) all those left-out frequencies, slots in the existing tier 1/2 towns and there are other towns...tier-III largely and tier-II also, where we had not been able to auction earlier. For those towns also, we will give the recommendations relating to reserve prices," he said. Speaking at the event, Prasar Bharati CEO Shashi S Vempati said a test stream of digital HD radio on a pilot basis is already available. "I see the need for digital radio because of the sheer genre that we are expected to service...Having a single analogue frequency where I try to force-fit every possible genre of content, is not going to scale and work for me going forward. So, if we were to address different audience segments, I need ability to have digital radio," he said. Vempati said direct-to-mobile broadcasting is the way forward and that Prasar Bharati recently entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with IIT-Kanpur to explore this further. "Couple of weeks back, director of IIT-Kanpur made a presentation to Prasar Bharati board on the road map for how we can develop direct-to-mobile broadcasting where distinction between audio and video blurs...and it is one pipe and uses the broadcast spectrum, does not choke the telecom network and is available on every smartphone," he said. Stating that audience is increasingly consuming media and information on smartphones, he said it is important that broadcast signal in some mandatory form reaches every smartphone. "Perhaps, it could be future regulatory mandate that would come out. It would be important from disaster management and emergency information standpoint...That is the future direction which we could evolve in," he said. MBI HRS

The adoption of <keyword id="50691" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="digital" source="Orion">digital</keyword> radio technology can help the broadcast sector double its revenues to Rs 12,300 crore in five years riding on a robust mobile ecosystem, a new report showed on Thursday. The country has so far tested two technologies -- <keyword id="14635242" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="hd-radio-and" source="Orion">HD Radio and</keyword> <keyword id="10330418" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="digital-radio-mondiale" source="Orion">Digital Radio Mondiale</keyword> (DRM) -- for digital broadcasting in FM bands. According to a report by the <keyword id="7825659" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="india-cellular-and-electronics-association" source="Orion">India Cellular and Electronics Association</keyword> (ICEA) and EY, radio stations will go up from less than 300 today to over 1,100 without additional spectrum and mass adoption cannot happen without the support of a mobile ecosystem. "Digital broadcast radio has the ability to cater to segments of entry-level smartphones and several hundred million feature phone users to receive enhanced services in areas of health, education, emergency and weather which by complementing data networks decongest them," said Pankaj Mohindroo, Chairman, ICEA. "Communication usage with internet of things (IoT) devices are next steps envisaged in the pipeline too," he added. Digital radio broadcasting can be extremely beneficial for all the stakeholders in the sector -- broadcasters, listeners, advertisers and the regulators -- and can help the FM radio segment boost revenues. This comes at a time when the FM radio segment has been struggling to generate robust revenues over the past few years. "It would lead to more advertising inventory to sell with the ability to charge higher rates based on segmented audiences. Given that the digital radio system can provide listenership data, broadcasters can build trust and eventually grow revenues," the report noted. Cost optimisation is another major factor of these technologies for the broadcasters as their transmitters use significantly less power as compared to analogue radio transmitters, it added. "Digital radio can provide a much-needed boost to the <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>n radio segment.
