<ul class="summary-list"><li>Two top Black executives are leaving <keyword id="11893181" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="amazon" source="Orion">Amazon</keyword>, according to an internal email <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-executive-shake-up-retail-operations-herrington-boler-davis-bozeman-2022-6">Insider obtained</a>.</li><li>Alicia Boler-Davis, SVP of Global Customer Fulfillment, was the only Black person on Amazon's high-level "S-team." </li></ul>Two top employees are exiting Amazon amid a larger reorganization of its <keyword id="11893588" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="retail" source="Orion">retail</keyword> business — leaving the company with no Black executives in senior leadership, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-executive-shake-up-retail-operations-herrington-boler-davis-bozeman-2022-6">Insider reported Tuesday</a>. In an email <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-executive-shake-up-retail-operations-herrington-boler-davis-bozeman-2022-6">obtained</a> by Insider on Tuesday, Amazon's SVP of Global Delivery Services John Felton told employees that Alicia Boler-Davis, SVP of global customer fulfillment, and David Bozeman, VP of Amazon Transportation Services, were leaving the company. "I want to thank Alicia and Dave for their remarkable contributions to the company and our employees. They scaled our operations, launched new capabilities and programs, and demonstrated relentless passion to make our operations better each and every day," Felton wrote. Boler-Davis joined Amazon in 2019 <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-s-team-first-black-member-alicia-boler-davis-2020-8">but joined the "S-team" (senior team) in August 2020</a>. She was the first Black person and fourth female to join the group, which functioned as former CEO Jeff Bezos' key advisors. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-tweeted-a-statement-in-support-of-george-floyd-protestors-2020-5">Amazon</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jeff-bezos-amazon-outspoken-social-media-behavior-2020-6">Bezos</a> publicly expressed support for the Black Lives Matter movement in May and June 2020, though employees at the time <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/24/technology/amazon-racial-inequality.html">told the New York Times</a> they hoped for more systemic change within the company, especially at the higher ranks.Boler-Davis is an <a href="https://www.northwestern.edu/magazine/winter2016/feature/driving-gm-alicia-boler-davis-in-top-ranks-gm-leadership.html">engineer</a> by training and was at GM for almost 25 years, and left as <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-s-team-first-black-member-alicia-boler-davis-2020-8">head of global manufacturing</a>, working directly under the CEO. Boler-Davis' departure means <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-executive-shake-up-retail-operations-herrington-boler-davis-bozeman-2022-6">there are no longer</a> any Black executives on the S-team. Bozeman has been at Amazon since 2017 and previously worked at Caterpillar, and Harley-Davidson, according to his <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/david-bozeman-4140a9150/">LinkedIn</a>. He and Boler-Davis <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-executive-shake-up-retail-operations-herrington-boler-davis-bozeman-2022-6">were</a> some of the most senior Black executives at the company. Felton <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-executive-shake-up-retail-operations-herrington-boler-davis-bozeman-2022-6">wrote</a> the two employees were going to "explore new opportunities outside Amazon," but it's not certain what those are. Neither responded immediately to a LinkedIn message. Amazon <a href="https://affiliate.insider.com?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.aboutamazon.com%2Fnews%2Fworkplace%2Four-workforce-data">reported as of December 2021</a> its total US workforce is 53% men and 47% women and fairly diverse as far as race and ethnicity. However, Amazon's "senior leaders" level — aka, its top employees— are overwhelmingly white (66.4%) and male, (76%) per the report. With shareholder pressure, Amazon <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-conducts-racial-equity-audit-after-shareholder-pressure-2022-4">said in April</a> it was conducting a "racial equity audit" for its hourly workers specifically, led by former US Attorney General (and now private lawyer) Loretta Lynch.Amazon is in the middle of a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/inside-tech-amazon-executive-operations-shake-up-2022-6">personnel and operations shakeup</a>.On Tuesday, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy announced the new CEO of Worldwide Amazon Stores, aka its retail operations: <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-retail-ceo-doug-herrington-first-email-employees-read-memo-2022-6">Doug Herrington</a>, who will be in <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-dave-clark-replacement-doug-herrington-2022-6">charge</a> of things like physical stores, e-commerce, and delivery. Herrington <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-dave-clark-replacement-doug-herrington-2022-6">replaced</a> Dave Clark, who surprised the business world when he resigned in early June, after some struggles including opening too many new warehouses and over-hiring — Insider <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-consumer-ceo-dave-clark-resigns-missteps-2022-6">previously reported</a>.Amazon, by <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-executive-shake-up-retail-operations-herrington-boler-davis-bozeman-2022-6">Insider's count</a>, lost at least 50 employees at the vice president level or above in 2021. Following the announcement of Herrington's new role, Felton wrote in the email Tuesday plans to combine the groups in charge of last and middle mile into one Amazon Transportation team. An Amazon spokesperson pointed to an <a href="https://www.geekwire.com/2022/internal-memo-amazon-ceo-andy-jassy-on-senior-exec-departures-s-team-diversity/">email obtained by GeekWire</a> from Jassy to leadership, where he wrote, "Though we've made substantial progress in hiring Level 8 and Level 10 black leaders the last two years, it's not lost on any of us that we're losing two of our most senior black leaders... We have a lot of work left to do."

As part of the change, John Felton, Dave Treadwell, and Alicia Boler Davis have been added to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/inside-amazons-s-team-ceo-jeff-bezoss-top-lieutenants-2020-5">the S-team</a>. Felton currently leads global delivery services for Amazon, while Treadwell heads up Amazon's eCommerce Foundation.Boler Davis is Amazon's vice president of global customer fulfillment. She joined the company in 2019 after serving as head of global manufacturing at GM, where she reported directly to CEO Mary Barra. Boler Davis oversaw manufacturing for three years at GM — before that, she led the company's connected-car efforts, according to <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/gm-says-two-top-executives-to-leave-the-company-11551375683">The Wall Street Journal</a>. "While she was at General Motors, Alicia and I were introduced by a mutual friend and agreed to have lunch," Wilke said in an email to employees on Friday. "We hit it off right away. I was sure we shared the same instincts."Boler Davis is the fourth female executive to be added to the S-team and the first Black member. Short for senior team, the S-team has consisted of 22 leaders besides Bezos spread across different aspects of Amazon's business. <ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="11893181" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="amazon" source="Orion">Amazon</keyword> has announced a set of programs aimed at supporting working parents and <keyword id="12471097" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="caregivers" source="Orion">caregivers</keyword>.</li><li>They include new scheduling tools, early access to weekly pay, and up to 20 weeks of <keyword id="12326055" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="parental-leave" source="Orion">parental leave</keyword>.</li></ul>Amazon announced on Wednesday a new program for its front-line employees that is designed to offer <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/employers-not-doing-enough-for-working-parents-caregivers-labor-shortage-2021-10">better support for parents and caregivers</a>.The company's <a href="https://press.aboutamazon.com/news-releases/news-release-details/amazon-launches-familyflex-give-front-line-employees-flexibility">FamilyFlex benefits</a> expand access to a set of smaller programs that were previously available to select groups of workers."The pandemic has put a spotlight on, and even exacerbated, the challenges faced by <keyword id="11947276" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="families" source="Orion">families</keyword> who care for young children," Alicia Boler Davis, Amazon's Senior Vice President of Global Customer Fulfillment, said in a statement."Giving employees ways to balance work and home commitments is important to us, which is why we go beyond providing an average starting wage of $18 per hour and comprehensive benefits," she said.Amazon says the program was designed in response to employee feedback about <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/labor-shortage-better-benefits-blue-collar-jobs-2021-11">what workers need</a> in order to better manage their work and personal lives.New parents are eligible for up to 20 weeks of paid parental leave, and employees can share up to six weeks of paid leave with a partner whose employer doesn't provide it.As parents return from leave, the company's Ramp Back program allows them to work a reduced schedule for up to eight weeks as they adjust to their new responsibilities.More generally, employees can use the company's internal A to Z app to set customized work schedules to fit around things like daycare drop-off or after school activities. And if something unexpected comes up, they can use the app to swap shifts with a coworker."Women - and many parents in general - will not be able to return to the workforce and thrive there, without policies like flexible schedules and family support resources," Path Forward CEO Tami Forman said in a statement. Path Forward is a nonprofit dedicated to helping professionals return to the workforce."Programs like Amazon FamilyFlex are another step toward meaningful change as employees seek better balance between work and caregiving responsibilities," she added.Amazon also expanded access to its flexible payment program, which gives employees the option to access their earnings before their normal pay period, allowing them to avoid expensive short-term lending services.The announcement comes at a particularly challenging time not just for Amazon but for employers in general, many of whom are locked in <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/labor-shortage-sign-on-bonuses-dont-work-hiring-careers-2021-10">a pitched battle</a> to hire and retain workers.Prior reporting showed that Amazon suffers from an <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2021/06/15/us/amazon-workers.html">atypically high turnover rate</a> among its warehouse employees, indicating that the company's $18 starting wage may not be enough to get people to stick around.For other businesses, researchers have documented an <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/new-minumum-wage-amazon-salaries-worker-pay-labor-market-shortage-2021-5">Amazon effect on local wages</a> and a program like this is likely to add to that upward trend on employee compensation.

Get ready for a summer of air travel hell

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword>'s consumer chief, <keyword id="3315169" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Jeff-Wilke">Jeff Wilke</keyword>, is leaving the company in early 2021.</li><li>Wilke, who reports directly to Amazon CEO <keyword id="191583" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Jeff-Bezos">Jeff Bezos</keyword>, is one of the most powerful executives at the company, overseeing all of Amazon's consumer operations.</li><li>He will be replaced by Dave Clark, Amazon's senior vice president of worldwide operations.</li><li>Bezos praised Wilke in an email to employees: "Jeff's legacy and impact will live on long after he departs. He is simply one of those people without whom Amazon would be completely unrecognizable."</li></ul>Amazon's consumer boss, Jeff Wilke, is stepping down in early 2021.<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2020/08/21/amazons-consumer-boss-jeff-wilke-to-step-down-in-2021.html">CNBC was the first to spot</a> a <a href="https://www.sec.gov/ix?doc=/Archives/edgar/data/1018724/000119312520226520/d789139d8k.htm">regulatory filing</a> announcing that Wilke would retire from the company in the first quarter of next year.Wilke is one of the most powerful executives at Amazon, overseeing the company's global consumer <keyword id="6354851" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="retail">retail</keyword> business. Wilke, along with Amazon Web Services CEO Andy Jassy, reports directly to Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and is part of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/inside-amazons-s-team-ceo-jeff-bezoss-top-lieutenants-2020-5">his elite "S-team."</a> Wilke has long been considered <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2017/10/23/amazon-ceo-jeff-bezos-direct-reports.html">the second-most-important person</a> at the company, where he has worked for over 20 years."I don't have a new job, and am as happy with and proud of Amazon as ever," Wilke said in an email to employees. "I treasure the deep relationships we forged as we grew this company. From Jeff Bezos and my S-team colleagues to the hundreds and hundreds of leaders throughout Amazon who apply our Leadership Principles every single day. We worked hard. And we had a blast. So why leave? It's just time."The filing said Wilke would be replaced by <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-exec-dave-clark-is-obsessed-with-detail-2020-5">Dave Clark</a>, Amazon's senior vice president of worldwide operations. Based on Amazon's internal organizational chart, seen by Business insider, Clark's responsibilities now include: Compliance and product safety; marketing; physical stores (including Whole Foods); shipping and delivery; warehouse management and worker safety; robotics (including Kiva and drones); Prime membership; supply chain management; sustainability; and fresh food delivery.Clark's expanded role is a big show of support by Bezos and Amazon's leadership team, reflecting his rising stock within the upper ranks. He was promoted to SVP of worldwide operations in 2013, and was soon recruited to Bezos's secretive group of top advisors called the "S-team." The Georgia-native grew up in an entrepreneurial household. He learned how to drive a forklift when he was 12-years old to help his parent's business, and in high school, worked at a Publix supermarket. A music major at Auburn University, Clark got through school in part by working as the equipment and logistics person for the music department. He was so excited about his first job at Amazon that he flew to Seattle the day after graduating from University of Tennessee-Knoxville's MBA program.Clark is known for his tough management style and meticulous demands, according to <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-12-17/amazon-holiday-shopping-the-man-who-makes-it-happen">a recent report by Bloomberg</a>. His reputation of quickly firing underperforming warehouse workers has earned him the nickname "The Sniper," the report said. During last year's holiday season, for example, his team temporarily cut ties with FedEx, citing low performance. Amazon's spokesperson told Business Insider that the company is not aware of The Sniper nickname. Clark's biggest task this year is the rollout of Amazon's one-day delivery program. The company invested roughly $3 billion last year in shortening its standard delivery time from two days to one day, causing investor concerns around the hefty spending. Amazon now handles <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-package-delivery-business-growth-2019-12">more than half of all package deliveries</a>, and is <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/amazons-newest-ambitioncompeting-directly-with-ups-and-fedex-1474994758">rumored</a> to have ambitions to eventually compete with the services by FedEx and UPS. At Amazon's internal <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/full-transcript-leaked-amazon-november-2019-internal-all-hands-meeting-2019-12">all-hands meeting in December</a>, Clark said he's most excited about the changes new technologies like automation could bring in the transportation space."I think by the time you look out three to five years, the way our transportation infrastructure operates is going to be pretty radically different than the way traditional transportation infrastructure works," Clark said, according to a recording of the event obtained by Business Insider.<h1>'Customer obsession'</h1>Clark's long list of responsibilities makes his team one of the largest at Amazon - and a difficult one to manage. Teams under Clark have been subject to a number of controversies in recent years. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-unsafe-working-conditions-warehouses-fulfillment-centers-2019-11">Worker safety</a> at Amazon's warehouses and delivery services are perennial issues that surface almost every year. Some of the pilots that ship Amazon packages have also recently <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-air-pilots-protest-company-shareholder-meeting-for-new-contract-2019-5">staged public protests</a> over low wages and poor working conditions. Amazon's loose standards over product safety and compliance, meanwhile, have drawn <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/amazon-has-ceded-control-of-its-site-the-result-thousands-of-banned-unsafe-or-mislabeled-products-11566564990">increased press and regulatory scrutiny</a> in the past year. And last month, <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2020/01/26/amazon-employees-plan-mass-defiance-company-communications-policy-support-colleagues/">a group of employees criticized</a> the company's record on climate change and sustainability efforts.The growing number of robots in Amazon warehouses - now exceeding 200,000 worldwide - has caused some employees to worry about losing their jobs to automation. Clark addressed those concerns at a 2017 internal all-hands meeting, saying Amazon would need to continue hiring a lot of people "in the foreseeable future" across its fulfillment centers, customer service, and transportation network, in order to keep up growth."We're going to continue to drive efficiencies as we have since the very first day we started operations," Clark said, according to a recording of the event obtained by Business Insider. "But there's going to continue to be room for awesome employees doing great things for customers for many, many years to come." While Clark has a good sense of humor and is considered a personable leader, he rarely goes off-script during all-hands meetings, sticking to party line answers when responding to sensitive employee questions. In many cases, he simply repeats Bezos's famous business mantras, like customer obsession. Perhaps that's one reason why he's earned the trust of the company. Those executives who are so absorbed in Bezos's business philosophy and are able to recite them at will are internally called "Jeff Bots" for their loyalty and devotion to the company, according to Brad Stone's book, "The Everything Store."That characteristic was reflected in Clark's comment during the 2018 all-hands meeting, when an employee asked what warehouse workers should tell themselves every day before going to work."The mother of all leadership principles is customer obsession," Clark said, according to a recording of the meeting Business Insider has heard.
